- Smoove, on 10/11/2007, -8/+184And Bush says we're only planning to be there until the Iraqis can get on their feet. Right.
- Fascist, on 10/11/2007, -4/+124WHY THE ***** IS THERE A POOL?
- Corrosionx, on 10/11/2007, -6/+119"Saddam is evil. He builds palaces for himself while his people starve."
Oh the irony. - Obligation, on 10/11/2007, -3/+108Why didn't they just use one of Saddam's palaces? That's what it ***** looks like.
- diggerydood, on 10/11/2007, -6/+110Now we know where the Katrina money went.
- EricCiccone, on 10/11/2007, -7/+85My girlfriend's dad helps coordinate the building of these embassy's, he said that this is by far the largest project he's ever been involved in and that the reason it's so big is that Bush wants to keep a military presence in the country so that "they" (Al Qaeda) don't attack us here. Pretty ***** eh?
- Detritus, on 10/11/2007, -4/+72The only thing outrageous about a "conservative" Administration blowing $592,000,000 when we haven't even repaired all the infrastructure damage we've caused... is the size of the embassy?
Holy ***** man, get your priorities straight. - obliviousfool, on 10/11/2007, -0/+56Once a mortar hits that swimming pool it's not gonna hold water anymore.
- jesuswuzanalien, on 10/11/2007, -1/+55The only thing this place is missing is the "Stay the Golf Course."
- KielKilla, on 10/11/2007, -3/+57If someone blow's it up. It just gives America a reason to send troops.
On other news: why do they need a huge pool? - tidu, on 10/11/2007, -3/+54"WHY THE ***** IS THERE A POOL?"
everytime I read this comment it gets funnier. It's an internet meme candidate (shouldn't have said that...) - Vision2098, on 10/11/2007, -4/+53In further news, I have no health insurance and thus simply cannot afford decent medical care.
Don't yet need it, thankfully, but my only protection is crossed fingers. - OneHine, on 10/11/2007, -6/+45Bush and his cronies are still in power because our "liberal" media is highly reluctant to follow stories that embarrass the government.
- Kerr, on 10/11/2007, -3/+42This is disgusting, its not like we can't use the money here in the US!
- OBKenobi, on 10/11/2007, -3/+40This is absolutely disgusting. They might as well have just built a giant ***** painted like an American flag in the middle of Baghdad.
I hope it is bombed off the face of the Earth if it is ever completed. But I don't think it will be completed. The contractors building will keep the $$$ anyway. That's what they've already done so far with countless failed construction projects in Iraq.
You didn't forget about the "reconstruction" did you? Seen any progress reports lately? I know Halliburton, Bechtel, et al, have already seen the profits. Google it, if you think you can deal with the truth.
This ***** country is being plundered by white collar Republican crooks! Do you realize how many BILLIONS they've embezzled? The spineless Democrats are, not surprisingly, unwilling to do anything about it. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+37Good to see our taxpayer money used wisely! ***** schools, healthcare, and welfare! We need this more than anything else!
/must I? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+36i wonder if the designs will include a 100 meter free standing statue of 'bush the conqueror' holding up a gesturing and benevolent hand towards the people of iraq? and maybe iraqi schoolchildren can memorize songs about 'glorious leader bush'?
i'm sure the iraqis who get blown up at markets everyday and live in squalor really appreciate this 'in your face' gesture by a conquering foreign army. it will foster warm feelings of good will towards the american people for generations to come.
/sarcasm - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+37@jcm267:
"Having a large embassy does not mean that we're going to keep a strong military presence there."
What ***** planet do you live on?
"maybe the Americans are serious about working with the Iraqis to build an economic powerhouse out of Iraq."
Or maybe they're just serious about ensuring a military presence there for a long time.
@robbh66:
"I absolutely love how the same Digg crowd and the same blog, thinkprogress, that used to harp all day long about how the government doesn't do enough to protect and entertain it's troops over in Iraq can turn around and bitch about how so much money is being spent to protect/entertain it's justice department employees"
Oh ***** rubbish! Entertain? Are you really trying to say that people complained the troops weren't being given Xboxes?
They were bitching because they didn't have body armor! - MtnXfreerider, on 10/11/2007, -11/+38How long until this is attacked/blown up? We probably should have gone cheap on it in case.. and if it lasted.. build a better one.
Mirror cause blog is slow.. http://chanforums.org/viewtopic.php?t=193 - sonaro, on 10/11/2007, -2/+26"UPDATE: The residence of the U.S. ambassador to Iraq will be 16,000 square feet. The deputy chief of mission in Iraq will have a “cozy cottage” measuring 9,500 square feet."
I did a quick search to get a visualization of what a 16,000 square foot residence would look like.
http://www.oregon.com/trips/portland_pittock_mansion.cfm - showpig, on 10/11/2007, -3/+27Another idiocy perpetrated upon the Iraqis and the American public by this so-called "administration". Why the ***** they're still in office completely eludes me.
- silverchrysalis, on 10/11/2007, -7/+30'cause its hot there?
- Elranzer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22"... is projected to cost $592 million... and operating costs totaling $1.2 billion a year."
And the Republicans call the DEMOCRATS the pork-barrel spenders... - Mast3rDigg3r, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22that is so ridiculous
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+223. You can't have beauty pageants without a $600 million pool.
2. So the Ambassador can go waterskiing.
The #1 reason:
1. Group waterboarding. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Cheney is the architect of a lot of Bush's foreign policy, buddy.
- SilverBack101, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Embassy? Yeah right. It's a nice little cozy Imperial Palace Compound.
- EntropyMan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17I'm so glad we tore town Saddam's extravagant palaces. This is much more utilitarian.
/snarcasm - anarchytv, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17There needs to be more naked greek statues around that pool er I mean atrium for gay shenanigans. Like a proper roman bathhouse. Sort of like a home away from home "Bohemian Grove". In that case, you need a big statue also of a pagan Owl. And some bushes around the place where old fat bureaucrats can take a leak in when they've consumed too much alcohol, free themselves of their encumbering business suits, and can't for the life of them find their way back to the bathroom and really don't give a ***** to try. Oh, wait, now you know why, THERE IS A FREAKING POOL!
- green1152, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18It's texas... In Iraq.
- nipplash, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17"Build them over there so we don't have to build them here"
- silverchrysalis, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18they should build it out of remnants from the war- bits of car doors and demolished buildings. an everlasting reminder of the mess we've created.
- ChLb, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17Wonder how most Americans would feel if China, Mexico, North Korea, Russia, or Iran were building massive palaces and bases on our soil?
Might they be upset?
Might they want to attack said countries? - Fire4Effect, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Thats going to be one expensive pile of rubble once the insurgence blows it up.
- Stonedonkey, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17So a "cozy" cottage is two-thirds the size of a 44-room mansion.
We are so *****. - holzp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14About time we rebuilt Babylon, this Armageddon thing was taking too long.
- TDR25, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13It's good to know where my tax dollars are going.
- MacintoshSauce, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14What a damn waste of money IMO! We have public schools falling apart and this idiot spends $592 million on a bloody embassy in the new American kingdom of Iraq.
- ichbinladen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11I'm hoping that will be Bush and Cheney's new permanent residence when America comes to its senses. (I can dream.)
- phillydrifter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11The Democrats and the republicans are both corrupt and spineless. i just love how everyone here loves to bash one or the other party.
All the more reason to bring in a 3rd party! and then a 4th party!
In the elections recently held in Iraq, there were over 100 candidates for each position, meaning if you got a trifling 2 or 3% of the vote, you won.
P.S. Over the course of decades, our government has slowly introduced laws that prevented any 3rd parties from being on the ballots, while Dems and Repubs were automatically registered to be on it.
That's not democracy. - herschelaz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11they could send a lot of kids to college for that amount of money
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11>>WHY THE ***** IS THERE A POOL?
So it can be closed. :p
Ohh man this was just too precious. - mrsammercer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13they don't report the reasons why the firings and the cover up are so ***** up. it seems blatantly obvious, but it's hard to swallow unless you get it spoon fed to you, that they may have actually fired these prosecutors to cover up their own voter fraud.
The media isn't the problem, it's the impotent congress that is scared to impeach. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12I take it to swim in the Pool you will need a bullet proof, life preserver ( giving a new meaning to Life Vest )............And could some explain where they are trucking the water in from ? Must be Canada cause the US and Iraq's water is barley bathable let alone drinkable !!
- garopedo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12@ smoove
Hah, yeah... that coming from someone who said that the United states would eliminate its debt by the time he was out of office ?... what did you expect. - kupa, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11I was going to comment on how tired I was of seeing this show up (yes, we all know about the insanely expensive and large "embassy") but this comment sums up my feelings nicely.
Not to mention it's one of the best comments I've seen in awhile, heh. - highlyirritable, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9So we're spending $592 million just so we can fly rescue missions to evacuate the remaining Americans when it falls to insurgents similar to Saigon?
- ScrabbyDoo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12American embarassy more like it
- orbanj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9so why do we need a pool again?
