On Alexander Hamilton's Federalist 84: What Are Rights?
inrethinking.blogspot.com — Hamilton discusses why there should be no Bill of Rights attached to the Constitution by outlining the many protections within the Constitution itself. This post spends time on the list he provides, focusing on the themes of security and equality within formal protections for rights. Part 2 details specific objections to a Bill of Rights.

- cashman57, on 04/01/2008, -0/+7Someone should send this to the three Senators. They talk like they never heard of this.
- ashok, on 04/01/2008, -0/+5Generally speaking, it is easier to pander to a faction and get votes with the concept of "rights," however abstract and useless the rights in question might be. People feel empowered and one need not address any actual, messy policy issues.

I'd laugh if it weren't so flippin' sad- ashok, on 04/01/2008, -0/+3Strictly speaking, does this stuff help with day-to-day governing, or is it more for those of us who want to understand how this is supposed to run?
I'm not saying the Federalist is irrelevant to the practice of government - it isn't. Just that I know if I were a politician, I wouldn't/couldn't be different from most others, I suspect.- KJeffV, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1"I wouldn't/couldn't be different fr/most others, I suspect."
...probably not AND get/stay elected!
