- uncleosbert, on 11/01/2009, -16/+263if we allow the government to function in secret, to enact policies for our protection that we trust without understanding, then we are no longer a democracy: we're an empire.
"If the President can simply use "secrecy" claims to block courts from ruling on whether he broke the law, then what checks or limits exist on the President's power to spy illegally on Americans or commit other crimes in a classified setting? By definition, there are none. That's what made this distortion of the "state secrets" privilege so dangerous when Bush used it, and it's what makes it so dangerous now" - rocknog, on 11/01/2009, -16/+224For the longest time, I've bitched about the fact that we have a two-party system. With ***** like this going on, though, it makes me realize I only wish we had a two-party system. What we have is a one-party system with two different names.
- hauntedchippy, on 11/02/2009, -47/+213Change you can be suckered into believing.
- PostalPenguin, on 11/02/2009, -15/+156The scariest part is that Obama has shown that he is not willing to give up Executive powers that Bush established for himself, despite their obvious violation of the principles of our nation. If Obama, a supposed agent for "change" is unwilling to do so, imagine what established politicians will do in the future. Certain administrations will come along, expand the government's powers and following Presidents will do nothing to reverse it. 1984 here we come!
- emjaysea, on 11/02/2009, -15/+145Even as I voted for him I said, I hope he's not just another American politician. But he is.
Sign me up for the revolution. - irvman21, on 11/02/2009, -23/+130This is my favorite example of something, which under the Bush administration was deemed immoral and a catastrophic offense against life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness by the media, but under Obama is completely ignored.
- prakash1234, on 11/02/2009, -11/+100we need a third party
- govsucks, on 11/02/2009, -6/+74Thank GOODNESS some Obama voters can admit their wrongs. I voted for Bush, and I can NEVER wash that ***** off. I am ashamed to this day that I voted for Bush. +1 digg for manning the ***** up.
- scamper22, on 11/02/2009, -31/+94Government knows best.
Who are you to be questioning it?
It knows what is best for your healthcare (you're okay with that).
It knows what is best for your children (you're okay with that).
It knows what is best for security.
Trust your Government. Trust Obama.
He came to make government cool again.
/s - CosmicSurfer, on 11/01/2009, -4/+60Who chooses to ignore it with his CONTINUED treatment of detainees in Gitmo, Bagram...Where he surveils his citizens on telephones and internet and where he ignores the war crimes committed in our name...
Sorry, Obama is better than McCain but he is NOT the "constitutional scholar" that follows that doctrine.
He is now complicit in the very same war crimes committed by Bush, Cheney and the rest of that administration as well as the Pentagon and the CIA by covering up and failing to prosecute; He is now guilty of continuing an illegal war; and he is guilty of spying on the citizenry.... - Doubledown, on 11/02/2009, -15/+70Continuing Bush Policies = Trust?
You people are slap-happy drunk on Obama - duke_nate, on 11/02/2009, -12/+65That sounds like Open and Transparent to me!
- RealmDown, on 11/02/2009, -4/+56That's what she said.
- Black6x, on 11/02/2009, -0/+47I've worked under three administrations. Two of them while I was in the Army. When I tell people that both parties are exactly the same when you strip their actions down to the base elements, they don't believe me.
- Moralogic, on 11/02/2009, -0/+45This isn't just a Obama and Bush thing, this is our political system problem. Any branch of the government could be helping the people hold the government officials accountable, but none of them want to be held accountable, so they are going to help each other evade such situations.
- daytona81, on 11/02/2009, -31/+76obama, you are a DOUCHE!
- TherealObadiah, on 11/02/2009, -29/+72Remember all that "Hope and Change" malarkey? Remember how Obama said he was going to set a "new tone" in Washington? Well...
....Bwahahahahahahaha...you got pwned!
And this report is from that right-wing rag, Salon!! - govsucks, on 11/02/2009, -8/+42How dare you point out the stupidity of social collectivism!
How DARE you point out the pandoras box that is the "common good".

Government will see to your health, your retirement, your education...but oh sweet baby jesus, don't read my EMAIL!
Now, run along, let the lemmings enjoy their servitude to the state. - rthakidn, on 11/02/2009, -9/+42You guys hated Bush because he did what he wanted, secretly or otherwise. Now Obama is doing the same thing and it's okay. Riiiiggght. Kids, the word for the day is hypocrite.
- detwiljp, on 11/02/2009, -16/+49Obama definitely was the better politician.... but thats all he was - a politician. Someone who manipulates the masses in order to carry out their own initiatives.
BO = BS - creekbaum2, on 11/02/2009, -4/+31The reality, this has been going on for decades (maybe not on quite this large of a scale, but I can tell you from personal experience the NSA doesn't drop calls of Americans like it is supposed to when monitoring the calls of internationals) and it isn't going to change even if deemed illegal, they'll just be more secretive about it.
- jjason1985, on 11/02/2009, -8/+33He got my vote once. He won't get it again.
- RegalBegal, on 11/02/2009, -9/+34Who is surprised? It's not like we voted in a new system in the Presidential Election, we just voted in a piece of an already corrupt puzzle.
- Doubledown, on 11/02/2009, -2/+25I'm forever grateful for people willing to stand up for their independence and freedom as a human being, no matter who you voted for in the past.
- nirvanix, on 11/02/2009, -9/+32Seems the face changed, not much else.
- mnocket, on 11/02/2009, -2/+24Hmmmm. I wonder why the NSA is building a $1.5B data center in Utah?
- jbmcb, on 11/02/2009, -2/+22Good thing we don't live in a democracy, then.
- donte, on 11/02/2009, -4/+22Lemme get this straight... so Obama going back on his campaign promises for transparency is the GOP's fault now?
- DukeOnkled, on 11/02/2009, -1/+19I think you're wrong. To find a good candidate you don't compare it to the next most popular party. You vote on your principles. If you can't find anybody or any party that you can back, it's your civic duty, if you think you're qualified enough, to run.
Ron ran (R) last year, and there were a lot of third parties out there. In fact, there were viable candidates on the campaign trail for both parties when the election was first starting (few compared to the actual number that ran, but there were good ones.) The problem is that people didn't vote on their principles. Instead, they voted on who CNN said was "electable." When you factor in that and actual election fraud, it's easy how this happened.
I blame the centrists. Not the ones who look at everything issue by issue, but the ones that want to find a compromise between the democrats and republicans on EVERY issue. The same ones that hold bipartisanship in a higher regard than sticking to principles or ethics. - methdwman3, on 11/02/2009, -3/+20I don't know what Obama has done in his time in office to make anyone think he wants to give more power back to the people.
- Kranden, on 11/02/2009, -5/+22Democracy is the worst form of government, Except all the others that have been tried.
- Elranzer, on 11/02/2009, -10/+27I don't trust Obama (anymore). And I voted for him.
- Elranzer, on 11/02/2009, -0/+16I won't be voting Republican in '10 or '12, though. I'm a registered Libertarian now and will be voting third party.
- rebrad, on 11/02/2009, -7/+23There's nothing in the street
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Is now the parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!
Yaaaaaaa
Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss - loudmouth11, on 11/02/2009, -6/+22Very true
- doctechnical, on 11/02/2009, -0/+15George Washington did. He could have been King of the United States, but he turned it down.
Somehow I doubt Obama would have made the same decision. But, the point is, it's been done. Which means it can be done again. We just have to find the right leaders. - Elranzer, on 11/02/2009, -0/+15I wish.
- dirtymerkin, on 11/02/2009, -3/+18"Thank you for placing this call. It will be patched through momentarily. Please know that this call may be monitored so that your government may serve you better."
Ring-ring. - SchmuckofNI, on 11/02/2009, -3/+17The true constitutional follower would have repealed the Patriot Act, gone back to sound money and get us out of useless wars. Hmm we did have someone like that run for president... What was his name I wonder...
- rthakidn, on 11/02/2009, -5/+19Sorry Irv, Under the Bush admin, the activities were unconstitutional. Now, it's hope and change.
- Ryuuken117, on 11/02/2009, -5/+19This just proves that politicians are the same rodents they've always been, equally stupid and greedy in either party.
- Moralogic, on 11/02/2009, -3/+16Yeah... the people have been bamboozled by the corporations is what I have started to realize.
- BasalCellBossk, on 11/02/2009, -18/+31If the GOP would have fielded a candidate with any credibility at all, people would not have voted for Obama. Face it.
I said it at the time: there was no choice. Electing old man McCain and Sarah Failin' was just not acceptable.
Blame the GOP. They can't field a candidate who is not ***** or dumb. Who will be their nominee next time? Jindal? LOL. Huckabee? No chance. Romney? You think a Mormon will win?
Blame the GOP for selling out to the crazies. There is no choice. - inactive, on 11/02/2009, -2/+15nobody ever gives up power willingly
- acknotSW, on 11/02/2009, -7/+19I voted for Obama to keep a Pentecostal from getting 1 heartbeat away from our "bring Jesus back now" weapons. I hope I won't have to vote for him next time, but you never know what can happen in few years. If it's Palin vs. Obama in 2012, I'll choose for the world to continue to exist until 2016 before I'll vote for a floor flopper.
If republicans ever want to become relevant again, they need to separate their politics from their religion and dump this family values *****. - mwilhelm, on 11/02/2009, -5/+17how bout NO parties?
Run on your merits as individuals. - rthakidn, on 11/02/2009, -7/+19Ghoul, you do realize that's a pretty lame excuse you're providing the administration. If Obama is "protecting" us now, why is it unreasonable to think Bush wasn't doing the same thing. Let me guess, "Bush was a no good dirty cowboy mother *****". Did you make the same excues for Bush? No. For lack of a better word, "evil" is as evil does.
- ygeoff419, on 11/02/2009, -7/+18So Obama...... about that second term
- uncleosbert, on 11/02/2009, -1/+12@ beratebirthers
the president is not elected to be king. there are constitutional bounds on his power for exactly this reason: so very popular presidents can't function above the law. we've seen this before.
