- mitthuman, on 05/17/2009, -0/+42I should probably be ashamed of this, but did anyone else pretty much skip through all of the military stuff and go straight to Dick Cheney and Star Trek?
- billraydrums, on 05/17/2009, -0/+39Q- "What's your reaction to Vice President Cheney's ongoing [criticism]? He's not quite twittering your administration [ laughter ] but he's coming fairly close. "
BO- "You know, Dick Cheney had a strong perspective about national security. It was tested in the early years of the Bush administration, and I think it resulted in a series of very bad decisions. I think what's interesting is that, in some ways, Dick Cheney actually lost these arguments inside the Bush administration.
And so he may have won early with Colin Powell and Condi Rice, but over the last two or three years of the Bush administration, I think there was a recognition among Republicans and Bush administration officials that these enhanced interrogation techniques that were being applied—that they had applied early on—were potentially counterproductive; that a posture of never talking to our enemies, of unilateral action, of framing national security only in terms of the application of force, often unilateral—that that wasn't producing.
And so it's interesting to me to see the vice president spending so much time trying to vindicate himself and relitigate the last eight years when, as I said, I think, actually, a lot of these arguments were settled even before we took over the White House."
Brilliant answer. - crunchdigg, on 05/17/2009, -0/+31"dating I think will be an issue because I have men with guns surrounding them at all times".
- Mithradates, on 05/17/2009, -6/+36My favourite line (and something Obama mentions a lot):
"I think one of the biggest mistakes that is made in Washington is this notion you have to dumb things down for the public."
That seems to be part of the reason for the changing of a lot of the Bush-era buzzwords - War on Terror being the most prominent example. Now it's an Overseas Contingency Operation, which is more accurate. - inactive, on 05/17/2009, -6/+31The guy pimped Star Trek.
Even though he's president, I wanna run out and vote for him right this second. - LaughingMan11, on 05/17/2009, -0/+24Obama is a Trek nerd. Wonderful!
- inactive, on 05/17/2009, -0/+16Lighten up, man. It wont hurt. I promise.
- snafflepaffle, on 05/17/2009, -0/+15OMG!!! Reruns started in 1972, so he must by lying! I bet he's a secret muslin too! And he was born in Kenya but there was a huge cover up so that he could be the future president of the US.
- snafflepaffle, on 05/17/2009, -0/+13This part struck me...
"I'm a night owl. My usual day [is]: I work out in the morning; I get to the office around 9, 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.; work till about 6:30 p.m.; have dinner with the family, hang out with the kids and put them to bed about 8:30 p.m. And then I'll probably read briefing papers or do paperwork or write stuff until about 11:30 p.m., and then I usually have about a half hour to read before I go to bed … about midnight, 12:30 a.m.—sometimes a little later."
Not to be an Obamaniac because I don't think everything he's doing is right, but this is a man who's working overtime to improve our country and the world. Didn't Bush have a "no work past 5PM" rule? - raz98, on 05/17/2009, -4/+14I like at the end the comment about Star Trek and it's meaning:
"...there was a little commentary and a little pop philosophy for a 10-year-old to absorb."
"A lot of U.N. stuff.
Yes, exactly, right". - QuimbyDogg, on 05/17/2009, -2/+12It is kinda nice to have a president that is open and willing to talk to the public. I thought this interview was actually really well done and helped give me some insight into some of his thinking and reasoning behind some of his more recent policies.
Criticizing him by saying he is only doing public interviews just shows ignorance on your part. I'm not sure what to tell you if you really think he hasn't done anything over these last hundred and some days. (maybe you should read a newspaper?)
Deploying troops to Afghanistan to help move along the real issue that arose from 9/11, issuing a statement about end of federal raids to states with legalized medicinal marijuana, and the declassification of tons of bush administration documents which showed the torture of detainees ---- just to name a few off the top of my head. - slundal, on 05/17/2009, -0/+9If you rent an apratment don't you say "Your apartment" in stead of "My landlords apratment which I rent." when you talk about were you live?
The house belongs to the president of the United States, whoever that may be. - BlakeEM, on 05/17/2009, -4/+13He renamed it but changed little else, it was a PR stunt. If they wanted to be more accurate they would call it for what it was, a huge mistake... and fix it as opposed to continuing down the same path.
- mehan, on 05/17/2009, -0/+8"Obama on Dick" - sounds kinky.
- relaxeder, on 05/17/2009, -0/+8Sure is hyperbole around here...
- inactive, on 05/17/2009, -0/+7Get Ken Starr on this immediately.
- DBreeze, on 05/17/2009, -0/+6Yeah, for some reason I can't imagine Obama taking a vacation.
- inactive, on 05/17/2009, -0/+6I had to stop and read some of the other answers. The thoughtfulness and articulation of this man compared to his predecessor is still pretty exhilarating regardless of what he's saying, and is a pleasure to read. And he wasn't my first choice for president, for those about to say fan boy.
- unradical, on 05/17/2009, -2/+8Well, I think he's trying to live up to one of his campaign promises of going out to the American people and getting an idea of what their current needs are. Sure, he could distance himself from the public, but is that really beneficial in the long run? I think if your only gauge about the status of this country comes from advisers and the media, things could go sour fairly quickly.
- inactive, on 05/17/2009, -2/+8LOL you poor bitter little man.
I guess you can always hope that Obama will give you something a little bit better to whine about over the next four years than that tired old *****. :D - akchrs, on 05/17/2009, -1/+6I read this once.
"But let’s face it: “Overseas Contingency Operation" does not exactly roll off the tongue. Just as “The artist formerly known as Prince” was always still “Prince," the "war" will probably always be the "war." - BossKey, on 05/17/2009, -0/+5I sure hope you've never said "come over to my place" when you were renting.
- weeFred, on 05/17/2009, -0/+5It's called democracy, he's communicating with the population and getting feedback, explaining his actions, talking through problems. This is what the US has been missing the last 8 years, Bush's policy was "***** you, I'll decide what we're doing". The thing is it's also far more effective than what Bush done. He's managed to get Pakistan to finally act against the militants in their country - something which Bush spent years and billions of dollars trying to do and failed.
- norman619, on 05/17/2009, -0/+4That's how I first read it. I had to read it 2 more times just to be sure. LOL
- MischiefGirl, on 05/18/2009, -0/+4Like chevy said above, I don't think you can ignore the fact that Bush took more vacations than any other president.
- chevyorange, on 05/17/2009, -0/+4But W also was on vacation every other week. The President should work a bit harder than anyone else. Its an important job.
- ltethe, on 05/17/2009, -1/+5To be fair, Bush was known as an early bird. His administration was usually up and working a good 2 hours before Obama's administration did.
I'm a big fan of Obama, but Bush's strict division of work and relaxation makes as much sense to me as Obama's night owlishness and mixing of work and play. My lifestyle is more Obamaish, but there are certain benefits to working like Bush as well.
Certainly I wonder if it'd be better for my health. - MofS, on 08/13/2009, -0/+3it was already known he was a trekkie, skip to 1:50 in this vid:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/30771796#3 ... - mst3kcrow, on 05/17/2009, -0/+3"I think there was a recognition among Republicans and Bush administration officials that these enhanced interrogation techniques that were being applied—that they had applied early on—were potentially counterproductive."
It was still going on well into the end of the Bush administration. That's his reaction to torture: "potentially counterproductive"? Nothing about how it's completely contrary to the Geneva Conventions and pretty ***** up? - srv0, on 05/17/2009, -1/+4Star Trek questions are on page four, for those who wish to skip the politics.
- m3arvk, on 05/17/2009, -3/+6Most of those were softball questions. Can we get some media with balls again?
- BossKey, on 05/17/2009, -0/+3I sure hope you've never said "come over to my place" when you were living in the home your parents owned.
- treytravis, on 05/17/2009, -2/+5haha this is great. Obama's a trekkie :D
- cadebbie, on 05/17/2009, -0/+2Dick Cheney. The first name says it all. No other comment needed.
- RetiredMidn, on 05/17/2009, -1/+3How is "Overseas Contingency Operation" more accurate? "Overseas" is self-evident, and "Operation" is practically redundant. How is "contingency" descriptive?
OCO would be equally descriptive of the Berlin Airlift or NATO training during the Cold War. - Kumah, on 05/17/2009, -0/+2By no history, you mean, if we leave out all the times they invaded other countries?
- ltethe, on 05/17/2009, -0/+2My bad, I am a sheeple, cause I don't understand your enlightened tongue.
By that, I mean I only understand english, not poor grammar and jibber jabber. - angrykeyboarder, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2I'm glad I'm the first to bring this up, because I found it quite funny:
"...dating I think will be an issue because I have men with guns surrounding them [daughters Sasha and Malia] at all times [laughter], which I'm perfectly happy with, but they may feel differently about it." - chevyorange, on 05/17/2009, -0/+2Republicans don't understand humor. Obviously he was beaming with pride when he said, "my house" meaning, obviously the right house. You know, when you criticize every stupid, human mistake - it takes away any caché you might have about anything important. Jeez, lighten up.
- chevyorange, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2I haven't blocked someone in a long time on Digg. It may not be fair of me but I'm sick of sycophants today. Goodbye, DerangedPenguin.
- kd1s, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1Ah, Afghanistan. They handed the Russians their own asses back in the 1980's. Did the Bush administration think we could do the job?
Granted, in the 1980's CIA was supplying the Mujahadeen with all sorts of nifty new weapons to fight the Russians. - fmaxwell, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1Here we go again -- more references to Obama being black. Were you raped by a black man or something -- because you bring up Obama's race in just about every political discussion you participate in?
- inactive, on 05/17/2009, -3/+4Don't you have a family to go take care of instead of wasting your time on the internet?
What you say? Your family is doing well, and you only Digg when you have a second to spare?
Ok then! - inactive, on 05/17/2009, -5/+6Obama says a war with Iran is still on the table. Wow. Why is the US allowed nukes, despite doing nothing but starting wars for the past 50 years? Why is Iran not allowed nukes, despite having no history of invading other countries?
- GOOFOFFJW, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1I think the ideal is that the US and other countries would scrap the nukes they have as well. Whether that will actually happen is something to debate, but I think it's pretty clear that the US is unlikely to start nuking other countries anyway.
Iran is another story entirely, and if they were a clearly stable country I think there would be less fuss over what they were doing. - Rothbardosaurus, on 05/19/2009, -0/+1Al Qaeda was created by the CIA.
- teichenauer, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1The UN quote was not surprising folks. Liberals have their own lens though which they view TV and movies as do the rest of us.
Of course there is the conservative take on Star Trek...
http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/the-dowd-conundrum-wh ... - falconear, on 05/18/2009, -0/+1Umm, didn't skip it, but read through it kind of impatiently. So I guess that makes me the kid that WILL eat his greens to get to dessert, but isn't too happy about. :)
- angrykeyboarder, on 05/18/2009, -0/+1It's just a ***** movie. I'd rather read about the Politics and his family.
- fmaxwell, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1Yet again, you have to bring his race into this. Yes, Obama is black. Yes, we know that you hate black people. Anyone who looks at your posting history can see that. I've lost count of how many times you've dragged Obama's race into political discussions that have nothing to do with race. Just stop posting. Now.
