- MiddleAmerica, on 09/06/2009, -31/+800The fake outrage continues...
Where was that supposed outrage & passion over the last 8 years? - 1badarsemuther, on 09/06/2009, -21/+600And the dumbing down of America continues...
- tcbishop12, on 09/06/2009, -23/+535It takes a different planet from the one on which I live to find “persisting and succeeding in school” to be socialist ideology.
- ColeChampagne, on 09/07/2009, -13/+485Wasn't W in a school talking to little kids on 9/11?
just sayin... - 9ballsnap, on 09/07/2009, -25/+420I can't wait to see the speech. But I'm afraid that right after I watch it, I am going to become a racist/fascist/socialist/communist instantly. So I better not watch it and instead start photoshopping Obama to look like Hitler, Crying out about "Death Panels" and painting on walls with my own feces like the rest of the wing nut far right conservatives are...
- inactive, on 09/07/2009, -24/+357Honestly, all this wildly and weirdly directed outrage over Obama from the radical Right is due to the fact that #1) he's black and they can't actually discuss this factor in public, and #2) they honestly cannot find anything more serious to complain about.
- Heavenfall, on 09/07/2009, -19/+302Hardly a surprise, seeing as how the GOP has some of their strongest support from the least educated.
- Joe_rigby, on 09/07/2009, -15/+267He's black. Get over it.
- rblancarte, on 09/07/2009, -7/+191I get that these guys are the party of "NO" now, but seriously, this is getting ridiculous. If the left says anything it must be wrong. Obama could come out in support for the sun rising, and the neo-cons would be in support of eternal darkness for that. And then when pointed out that electrical bills would go up along with the fact that it would kill just about all plant life, the spin would be crazy.
- Parsrebel, on 09/07/2009, -13/+197"Obama wasn't elected to get you your own pony"
Then why the ***** are you people constantly bitching about how he's a socialist or communist when you just said that he's not?
And you know what the saddest part is? I actually did hope he was a closeted leftist, a socialist. But he's not, and everyday it becomes more clear that he's not. Except for morons like you and the teabaggers, the birthers, and all the other idiots - Pillar007, on 09/07/2009, -7/+183I must admit, as a Canadian watching the events surrounding this unfold have been rather...confusing. Don't get me wrong, we have lots of partisanship up here with one party criticizing the other for pretty much anything they do, but I don't think any politicians here would be foolish enough to criticize another for encouraging kids to stay in school, because if they did they would be an instant laughing stock, criticized by the media and citizens alike.
- CraigReed, on 09/07/2009, -9/+173Reagan also preached "the importance of tax cuts" to school kids at one stage.
Republicans don't seem to care about facts, who can blame them they're dwindling base will buy anything as long as a republican is saying it. - insanebrain, on 09/07/2009, -10/+165What's wrong with a socialist ?
- inactive, on 09/07/2009, -4/+128The quintessential representative of the “Right”.
This is the GOP in action.
Ignorant, hostile and self righteous...
Doesn’t know it, doesn’t care.
lol...nice... - Mujokan, on 09/07/2009, -10/+131This was a completely stupid issue for the Republicans to burn their little remaining credibility on.
- dalittle, on 09/07/2009, -8/+128You cannot manipulate people easily if they are educated. The GOP understands this.

- tradderjohn, on 09/07/2009, -8/+118If Ronald Wilson Reagan were to say it. Rush and the rest of the party of Lincoln would be bowing saying we're not worthy
- sputnikv, on 09/07/2009, -5/+102tell us we have to breathe and half of the us' political spectrum will die
- Beakers, on 09/07/2009, -2/+94I remember when I was at school we had a police officer come around and tell us all how we can help look after our school and environment in general.
Then once we had a fireman come around and he told us how fire is dangerous and what we can do to help the fire folk.
Everyone that’s moaning about your president giving a speech to children is just ***** stupid. - teebird, on 09/07/2009, -3/+94Yes, and GHW Bush did an address to schoolkids in 1991 and don't forget the Reagan's "Just Say No" campaign. There was some fuss raised among legislators about all these addresses to schoolkids, but there was none of the public hysteria we're seeing over the Obama speech.
- rocknog, on 09/07/2009, -11/+101One does have to wonder why the Republicans are spending so much effort on screaming about Obama rather than building up their own party. If the Democrats are so bad, fine, give us an alternative. Actually, it reminds me a lot of the screaming the Dems did about Bush during his presidency. 2004 should've been an easy election, but the Dems lost, primarily because they had no real message outside "Bush is evil."
As it currently stands, it looks to me as if the Republicans are already planning their concession strategy for when they fail to come back in the next election. It'll be all "Well of course we can't win, what with Obama brainwashing the people and indoctrinating our children!" - damage78, on 09/07/2009, -1/+83Don't watch it.
- picturesnstuff, on 09/07/2009, -1/+81I dunno either. I think in classic US cable news style, a word has been made to mean something amazingly polarized. Socialist seems to mean the same as communist now.
It's just another 'Liberal', 'Pro-life', 'Pro-choice', 'Democrat' type word. If you asked someone who'd never watched the news if they were pro-life, *everyone* would say yes. If you asked them if they were pro-choice, *everyone* would say yes. It's just a nice easy way of pigeon-holing groups of people. - kapil, on 09/07/2009, -9/+86Why did you remove the name of the school administrator who wrote that letter and his/her number? Unmask the *****! As public officials, they're not entitled to privacy!
- Heiminator, on 09/07/2009, -3/+76@ptheroux:i really doubt that you know what the hitler youth was....
seriously, comparing obamas politics to the nazi regime is insulting on so many levels - mochaman, on 09/07/2009, -1/+73Don't forget he won too!
- DeadBabySoup, on 09/07/2009, -10/+80A lot of people believe Obama has no right speaking to the schools saying that his only responsibilities belong to the executive branch and being commander in chief of our military, but why is it so wrong for our president to communicate to his own people? Because they're just kids who can't vote and people are worried that he'll change their perspective on politics? I don't really know what the deal is. JFK made an address to the schools during his presidency, so did reagan and bush sr. I think it's a step towards rebuilding America, considering the financial state we're in. A president's job is to lead his/her country and thats why Obama was elected, because he's a suitable leader. We need someone to tell our kids whats going on in the world and not hide them from it, and we need them to take pride in being an American..........As far as comparing Obama to Hitler and referring to the Hitler Youth, you should go die, shame on you, a lot of people died or lives were forever changed by that regime and your smacking them in the face by taking that "label of evil" and branding anyone who disagrees with you. That goes for people comparing Bush to Hitler as well.
- eugenetabisco, on 09/07/2009, -3/+73Stay ignorant, ptheroux!
- yaosio, on 09/07/2009, -5/+74Public education is paid by the government, that's socialism. allah ackbar
- pulse768, on 09/07/2009, -4/+71What happened to respecting the office of the President? If these people don't like the man, at least honor his position; he's working for you, for me, and for every other citizen in this country. Parents and schools, let the children hear what he has to say, even you don't like the man. I was no fan of Bush, but he was the damn President. I listened to him even when I thought he was wrong (which was most of the time). Do the same for Obama, please.
- coopersanborn, on 09/07/2009, -0/+66Guess who's coming to dinner.
- rocknog, on 09/07/2009, -10/+75Wait, people thought he was a closeted lefty? I never really had him pegged as anything but a moderate. Which, truth be told, I do wish he were more leftist, and he's actually leaned a bit farther to the right than even I was expecting, but I really thought a moderate was what we needed. I figured after Bush, too dramatic a change might be damaging (I mean, we can't just, say, pull out of Iraq overnight, for example), plus I make it a rule never to fully trust my own political beliefs (I just think it's dangerous and I fully acknowledge that I'm not perfect and that I might be wrong on some things). Plus, I figured, hey, we're gonna need the Republicans to help us out here, and having a moderate might be seen as a strong concession and might make them more willing to cooperate.
Boy, was I ever wrong on that last part. Hell, they're attacking him at every turn, even going so far as to criticize him for instances when he carries on Bush's policies, which makes no ***** sense to me as they're the ones who voted for Bush. Long story short, I always expected Obama to be a moderate, so his presidency thus far hasn't come as a surprise, it's the Republican reaction that's a surprise to me. - Gregatron5000, on 09/07/2009, -1/+65Socialism is an economic system. It's not a particularly good one, but there's nothing inherently immoral about it. The thing is, Obama isn't really a socialist.
- teebird, on 09/07/2009, -9/+72The Lew Rockwell essay just repeats a tired and shopworn argument that can be refuted by any half-smart undergraduate Poli Sci student : "I don't see that in the Constitution, therefore it's unconstitutional."
To support that conclusion, you have to ignore the fact that the Constitution gives the president the power to propose new laws (ArticleII, section 3), and to appoint public officers, including those "whose appointments are not herein otherwise provided for, and which shall be established by law" (ArticleII, section2). In other words, the Constitution leaves room for departments of government that didn't then yet exist and created and procedures for those departments and their officers to be proposed, created, appointed and, if necessary, for the enabling legislation to be challenged in the courts. - theoccupation, on 09/07/2009, -10/+72AHHHHH socialism!!!! They are worse than pedophies!!!! Kill them, burn them, off with their heads!!! The sky is falling!!! I'm a stupid American who falls for this *****!! AAHHHHHH!!! what am I to do!!>?!>!>!>!>!?!?>!>!eleven
- eugenetabisco, on 09/07/2009, -5/+65The basic right is being missed here -- The President is being censored before he even speaks. There are sure signs to see that this is conservative propaganda aimed at getting people to not listen to the president at all -- because if they allowed the President to speak, and what he said was crazy or off-beat, they'd have more ammunition in the way of video to prove a point. But there is no point to prove. So they create an uproar over nothing and get lesser brains to say "I'm not going to watch and I don't want my child exposed to whatever it is he's going to say."
Fox is not airing it. Instead they will take things out of context and spread lies about it and fake outrage. That's what they do. - inactive, on 09/07/2009, -5/+63A certain portion of the country has gone insane...we can only hope its temporary and that it doesn't lead to war here.
- rocknog, on 09/07/2009, -5/+62@BridgeTroll
I wouldn't go into a hissy fit if it were Bush saying that. Though I disagreed with Bush on many, many issues, I still respected the fact that he was president. You're making a big fuss over nothing. Sounds like a projection of your own immaturity to me. But hey, your name is BridgeTroll, so clearly your statement wasn't meant to be a legitimate argument anyway. - m0n0kr0m3, on 09/07/2009, -6/+60I love that the it's mostly the same people who blamed Clinton for everything that happened for 3 years after Bush was elected that are doing most of the complaining. All you'd here from these guys is give him a chance. ***** hypocrites is what they are. We aren't even to the point where Bush got his blank check to do whatever he wanted (9/11) in the Obama presidency. People should lighten up a tad. I don't expect Obama to fix everything, but let's be aware that he didn't ***** everything up in the first place.
- appleofdischord, on 09/07/2009, -0/+53inorite?
gotta keep them negros away from your womens! - theonlywizdum, on 09/07/2009, -4/+56There are no "historic parallels" associated with it. Just idiots that are reading too much into a simple question. Heres an example. Obama tells the kids to stay in school and work hard. Q: "How can you help Obama?" A: By staying in school and working hard.
He is having a hard time addressing this because he is based in REALITY. - WasabiBomb, on 09/07/2009, -4/+54Wrong, actually.
He made the speech in a classroom, true. But it was broadcast to schools across the country.
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements ...
By the way, Reagan ALSO spoke to schools nationwide. - WasabiBomb, on 09/07/2009, -4/+53Actually- no, he didn't. That was from the Department of Education, not from the President.
- DJPlayer, on 09/07/2009, -14/+62Real letter from local public school:
Dear Parents:
President Obama is scheduled to deliver a speech to our nation’s school-aged children on Tuesday, September 8, at 11:00 a.m. Central Time. In addition, the President’s staff, in conjunction with the United States Department of Education, has prepared pre- and post- speech lesson guides for teachers to complete with their students. Schools across the country have been asked to participate in this event.
We have made the decision to not show the speech, at this time, to our students. Because the speech will be live, we will have no opportunity to preview its contents to assure that the message is motivational and informative rather than political in nature. Previewing materials is the practice we use with any of our instructional materials and we believe it is appropriate to apply this standard to this speech, as well. We will be recording the speech so it can be used at a later time if it is determined to have instructional value for our students. If after reviewing the speech it is determined to be about motivation and doing well in school, staff members will be given the option of showing this speech to their students. If this is the case, you would have the right to opt out your child from viewing the speech.
This decision should in no way be viewed as disrespectful to the President nor does it diminish in our minds the importance of receiving information from the President. However, we have a responsibility to assure that what is presented to our students is of educational significance and will not allow for political information to be delivered without having a chance for children to understand both sides of an issue.
If you have any questions, please call me at xxx-xxxx x108.
Sincerely,
XXX X. XXXXXXX - IIAmusedII, on 09/07/2009, -19/+65Hey, republicans, if you don't like it, please get the ***** out of our country. Leave. No one is holding a gun to your head and making you stay here. The majority doesn't like you anyway. Get out and go find somewhere else to live if you can't handle the idea of the President making a speech to schoolchildren. You obviously hate America, so get out now.
I hope Obama turns your kids against you. I hope the speech makes them become socialist, communist, athiest, homosexual, environmentalistic, and whatever else scares you. - KillerMoth, on 09/07/2009, -1/+46Exactly, these people don't actually need a reason to criticize Obama. It's all based on their gut, logic and reason has nothing to do with it.
- KibblesnBitts, on 09/07/2009, -4/+48I've been traveling for the past few days and have been out of the news cycle.....is there really controversy going around because Obama wants to make a live televised speech to schoolchildren? ***** this.
- eugenetabisco, on 09/07/2009, -2/+46@ptheroux -- perhaps you should stop reading propaganda websites aimed at using Jedi mind tricks to convince those with lesser discerning abilities that the left is evil.
http://www.factcheck.org/2009/03/mandatory-public- ...
You will find that this bill -- a very bipartisan piece of legislation, btw -- says nothing of the sort. But as long as you go to conservative sites aimed at fanning the flames of McCarthyism you will believe that Obama is the new Hitler.
Don't feel stupid, there are many like you. But try not to BE stupid. - robschumacher, on 09/07/2009, -4/+47@WhiteHatTrick
Bush confusion. Bush the First was the one who spoke in a school (and had it taped/rebroadcast to all schools). Bush the Second is the one who read "My Pet Goat" while terrorists attacked the United States.
Hope that cleared it up for you... -
