- anonymousbosch1, on 08/13/2008, -3/+17I think that was photoshopped. Just sayin' is all.
- davidwasman, on 08/13/2008, -9/+23Hmm...
Open a questionable PHP page at 100+ kb?
or
Open the safe image that was intended at maybe 25kb?
Feel free to fill some corporate schlubs pockets with your clicks. I'd rather keep digg from doing that. - yojiffyskippy, on 08/13/2008, -5/+18Was it too soon?...... I didn't know you Grandfather but I'm sure (unlike you) he probably had some balls and wouldn't be "offended" by a picture. In fact, if he's anything like the Marines that I served with, he'd probably see the irony and maybe even some humor in this picture.
- MavRevMatt, on 08/13/2008, -4/+17Agreed. I really do not like wikiupload and it being used like this on Digg constantly.

- Gbobrt4, on 08/13/2008, -3/+13You put your right foot in,
You put your right foot out;
You put your right foot in,
And you shake it all about.
You do the Hokey-Pokey,
And you turn yourself around.
(and then what he said) - Gnar04, on 08/13/2008, -2/+12imagine how we couldve have truly changed the world for the better with all that wasted money...

this one isn't that big of a mystery - iizh, on 08/13/2008, -0/+7It's probably secretly run by Taco Bell. "Think outside the bun" taken to a new level. :O
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -8/+14Kinda hard to believe since it is just a volcanic island in the middle of the Pacific!
- crweaks23, on 08/13/2008, -0/+6All for the cheap price of our economy (just over half a trillion dollars... pocket change, really), foreign ownership of our country (China), and human life! WHAT A DEAL!
Well, to be fair, even though he didn't exactly "finish off" Al Queda or the Taliban (see Pakistan), I'll give you Saddam, even though the vacuum left behind has created an entire state of "sectarian violence"... aka civil war. But you can call it a democracy if it helps you sleep at night. - pgoetz, on 08/13/2008, -0/+6troll, troll, troll, troll...
- arjie, on 08/13/2008, -1/+7Bush won. That's exactly what this image is saying.
- p51d007, on 08/13/2008, -12/+17Since my grandfather isn't here, I'll attempt to speak for him.
This cartoon is in poor taste. I understand that it is suppose to be "funny", or attempting to prove a political point, but since my grandfather WAS THERE with the 5th Marine division on Iwo Jima, then I think he would have the right to complain. My grandfather was one of the "lucky" ones who survived the assault on Iwo Jima. He was wounded, and two of his buddies were killed when a Japanese motar went off near him. He lost the hearing in one of his ears, and the sight of his dead buddies forever changed him. In years following WW2, my mother said that you could never approach him from behind and tap him on the shoulder unannounced, for fear of him spinning around and swinging at you. Also, my mom remembers hearing her mother wake him up in the middle of the night saying "John, John, wake up, you are having another nightmare". You see, after the war, vets were not "deprogrammed" or evaluated to see if they had PTSD or anything that would bother them. What they did & saw in the service to our country caused a lot of them pain. Pain that they would suffer for the rest of their lives. In my grandfathers case, he became introverted, started chain smoking, which most likely precipitated his early death in the mid 70's from cancer. Thankfully, he is finally at peace.
The original men that raised (the "famous" photo, since there were two flag raising photos), were
Mike Strank, died on Iwo Jima, Harlon Block, died on Iwo Jima, Franklin Sousley, died on Iwo Jima,
Ira Hayes survived the war, but was haunted for the rest of his life, died in the 50's after a night of drinking and was reported to have been crying over his "dead buddies" before he died.
Rene Gagnon survived, but pretty much kept to himself, not wanting to draw attention to himself. He died in 1979. John "doc" Bradley, who's son wrote "Flag of our Fathers", came back after the war, tried to forget about the terrible things he saw, never brought up "war stories" at the family dinner table, had his family trained that if anyone called, or came to the door to ask him about Iwo Jima, or raising the flag were to say "he's gone on a fishing trip for the next few weeks". He avoided discussion of his war record saying only that the real heros were the men who gave their lives for their country. After his death in 1994, his widow finally was allowed to tell the stories to their children, and show him the medals and awards for his service to the United States.
So you see, since a majority of the vets who are still alive probably don't use the internet, or even if they do, never get around to going to Digg.com and look at the most likely a photoshopped picture (because I doubt if true Marines would do this), allow me the honor of attempting to speak for them by saying I think they would find such a photograph offensive.
God bless them, and their service to our country, and may the ones still alive sleep in peace at night,
the ones that have passed away after the war be at peace finally, and for the ones that made the ultimate sacrifice thank you and god bless.
Semper Fidelis - humanerror, on 08/13/2008, -1/+6Ignorant, stupid, uneducated, lazy, and brainwashed!? How dare you sir!
We are not uneducated. - bixby1, on 08/13/2008, -4/+8 i like the 'every time you click your paying someone' rant. guess what buddy? - every front page story gets paid and so does (ur gonna *****) DIGG. it's called a democracy. i think ur looking for china. head east for socialism.
- redlantern64, on 08/13/2008, -4/+8As much as I agree w/ you, I can't in good faith counsel Muslims to laugh off a cartoon of Mohammad, yet allow myself to get bent out of shape when someone attacks one of America's treasured icons. The inherent right of a cartoonist (or any other artist) to make a statement on their view of the world MUST be preserved, whether I agree with that view or not.
- kinggimped, on 08/13/2008, -0/+4But... but the banner said "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED".
- Moronnoodle, on 08/13/2008, -2/+6Its a South African Newspaper - Die Burger = The Citizen. Its Afrikaans (a form of Dutch). http://www.dieburger.com/
- laubscher, on 08/13/2008, -4/+7"Die Burger" is the name of the South African newspaper running the ad. Roughly translated, it means "The Citizen".
- richmomz, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3Costing TAXPAYERS trillions... no bid contractors like Halliburton are doing just fine thank you very much. There's another digg story this week about how contractors have ripped us off for billions of dollars.
So in sum: taxpayers pay with their weath, soldiers and iraqi's pay with their blood, and the corporations reap the benefits. - teekay87, on 08/13/2008, -1/+4how long will this joke play for...
- humanerror, on 08/13/2008, -4/+7Old, but always diggworthy.
In fact I wish this would get promoted to the front page after every single huffingtonpost story about how "barack obama kisses a baby!!", to help the digg mob remember what they're voting for.
At this point McCain should just declare Obama as his VP, and Obama declare McCain as his VP. Then the huffingtonpost and foxnews people can argue over which one will get the bigger office in the white house. - donkz, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3Fail to see fake Fail.
- passedoutghost, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3I don't know why people are digging you down. I didn't know that Die Burger was "The Citizen" in Afrikaans.
- Pedobear, on 08/13/2008, -4/+7You sir, are an idiot.
- SpookyET, on 08/13/2008, -10/+12American capitalism: Socialise the losses; privatise the gains.
American population: Too stupid, too ignorant, too lazy, too uneducated, too brainwashed to notice it. - jeremyduffy, on 08/13/2008, -6/+8Huh. So this is a German newspaper ad. I guess our clever plan of keeping our apparent motivations for the war secret haven't worked.
- dizzythegreat, on 08/13/2008, -1/+31. Bush did not win the election. Either time. Check the facts.
2. Bush invaded a country which has never hurt attacked the U.S. in any way.
3. The Taliban is stronger, richer, and more powerful since we went into the Mideast than they've been in years. They were not in Iraq until we were.
4. Bush has not established a Democracy, he has started an anarchic three-way civil war.
What you have to realize is that "terror" is not ONE HUGE faction. It's dozens of small nomadic tribes that don't have any nationalism or patriotism of any kind--they're just irrationally emotionally attached to their beliefs (like a lot of Christians, for that matter).
People in the Mideast don't have a concept of forming ONE nation for the greater good, their culture is tribal. They don't yet know how to form an effective democracy. Not our kind, anyway.
The Mideast war is an utter, utter failure. - DesdinovaEL, on 08/13/2008, -4/+6I don't get what this has to do with anything.
-abc - Abomonog, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2If you haven't heard, the U.S. is selling the oil off to whatever oil company bids highest for it. The oil will not go to Iraq and nor will the profits. Last I heard (about 6 months ago) most of the oil fields were still burning away.
This 5+ years after the initial attack. We haven't rebuilt anything. We have only stolen what belongs to Iraq. - nobody7, on 08/13/2008, -4/+6That pic should be the new Iraqi flag
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMZN2BDCjPE - kinggimped, on 08/13/2008, -1/+3Oh, do pipe down. I'm sure your grandfather was fighting for freedom of speech, amongst other things.
It's a new take on a recognisable image. There's a level of parallelism here. Cry harder and try not to take every single thing at face value. - PDF84, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2Fear the Barackocalypse
- donkz, on 08/13/2008, -1/+2This picture has nothing to do with Iwo Jima besides having photographic resemblance. Nice 600 words emotional write-up though.
- Phinster, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1Could you just explain to the uninitiated why it's so bad? Never noticed anything particularly offensive about Wikiupload.
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+11) photoshop out the newspaper
2) use as wallpaper
3) ?
4) moral profit - inactive, on 08/13/2008, -2/+3Yeah, we are shipping millions of barrels a day from Iraq directly to our reserves.
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -1/+2guys... did you even read this? two of his friends died. ***** you.
dugg up for truth. sorry for the losses in your family, and their friends - tyme, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1Fail. Because I wanted to be cool and say Fail too, since everyone else was doing it.
- PDF84, on 08/13/2008, -1/+2Fail. You fail to see that I got the point, but disagreed.
- Blydchyld, on 08/13/2008, -1/+2The picture is commenting upon the waste of Human life and the betrayal of our government.
Asshat. - norbiu, on 08/13/2008, -1/+2It took you 5 minutes to figure that out?
- richmomz, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1If the OP were wrong most of Washington would have been thrown in the street during the last election.
- yojiffyskippy, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1You see, there's this very famous picture ...... aw never mind!
