McCain and a Southern Baptist Perspective
onthewriteside.org — Apparently I'm not alone when it comes to my reluctant embrace of Sen. John McCain. Quotes from this week's gathering of the Southern Baptist Convention show that I'm very much in like-company.

- alanhlake, on 06/10/2008, -2/+6Are Southern Baptists pragmatists or will they vote according to Biblical principle? We will find out this year. If they vote pragmatically, it will be because they don't trust the Lord their God.

- twanablevins, on 06/10/2008, -2/+5I wanna know why none of the Presidential Candidates are talking about the invasion of ILLEGAL ALIENS in our country.
ILLEGAL ALIENS are not anything except ILLEGAL ALIENS!!!
In the last 18 months 4000 Americans have been murdered by ILLEGAL ALIENS on our border with Mexico. That's more than we lost on 9/11.
LETS FORCE THIS ISSUE WITH THESE CANDIDATES AND NOT ACCEPT A SHORT SOUND-BITE. BUT DEMAND RESPONSIBILITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY. - IconoclastStill, on 06/11/2008, -3/+4Well, as you note in the blog . . . there are evangelicals who will vote for Juan because the thought of an obblehead Administration is such an anathema to them. And it is true, again conservatives of all persuasions (fiscal, foreign policy, social policy) face the distasteful decision between voting for a liberal RINO or one of the very far left dimocraps - someone 75% negative vs. something 99.999999% negative - with the alternative of casting some sort of protest vote which likely will do little good in either the short or long term. Although I consider voting for Juan with as much pleasurable expectation as I would regard a winter crossing of the North Atlantic in a garbage scow without Dramamine, I suspect in the end the two SCOTUS seats and the idea of hamas guiding our foreign policy will force me to go with McAmnesty.
- Qong, on 06/11/2008, -0/+2You didn't give any reason for your reluctancy to vote for McCain, maybe I missed something? The only thing that was mentioned was his backing away from Haggee.
I'm not quite sure how Southern Baptist's feel, so that's probably why I missed the reasoning behind it; but I was looking for some actual insight as to why exactly you were reluctant to vote for him. - onthewriteside, on 06/12/2008, -0/+1I tried to keep my specific reasons out of it and address the issue from a general SBC perspective as a whole and simply note that I was reluctant and not alone in my church.
