- torifile, on 10/12/2007, -11/+115And this is the reason the US shouldn't be messing in international politics. Our leaders have no sense of history or cultural understanding. Why did Iraq need an iron-fisted despot to keep it from falling apart? If you can't answer this question, Mr. Lott (or any other leader), with a historically sound reason, you shouldn't be there.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+67Questions that should have been asked BEFORE we got involved. Retarded fake answers like "they hate our freedom" gained us absolutely nothing.
"Hey, by the way George, why do those people hate each other? George?"
"Pretty birdy!" - sparks2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40Uhhh... for the same reason protestants and catholics killed each other or any other two groups of religious beliefs.... is it that hard to grasp? It's a political issue based on a religious difference...
- econoar, on 10/12/2007, -9/+42*****?

- Sell, on 10/12/2007, -10/+42What?
- JonnyTrombone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31It reminds me of something... Oh, right: Protestants and Catholics. Wierd.
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Something like...if you follow, make sure your leaders are good, as you will be treated the same as them.
If you follow an idiot, you are an idiot, and will be treated as such.
The saying is Arab btw, not swahili. - drowningfish, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31Sorry Mr. Lott and friends but the World is not as simple as one where everything is clearly defined via Black and White / Good and Evil standards.
The World of Absolutes seem to only exist in the self-absorbed minds of the radical conservatives on both sides. - Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25@cliffzdude: Lott is being an idiot. Why did the French slaughter themselves in the French Revolution? Why did the Americans do the same? How did they tell the difference? They all look the same to me...
- Genthree, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20God, as if Mississippi didn't already have a bad enough reputation.

You're an idiot. - oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19This isn't the first time that lott's shown his ignorance.
- karn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Haha comments like this crack me up.
Sometimes I have a problem telling white people apart. Does that make me racist? - tdogg241, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14The only reason this is a non-event is because it's the exact kind of ***** a rational person would expect Lott to say. There is no way to spin this to make him look like an ok guy.
- humanaut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Is anyone surprised that (INSERT OLD RICH WHITE MAN HERE) is racist? It's kinda part of the job description,
Republicans, lol. - john2kx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14or the 2nd, as hard as that is to believe.
- bilbus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Well Sunnis and Sheits each believe that Ramadan is of diff days ....
if you believed Christmas was 3 days later then me ... i would gun your ass down to. I want my presents damn it - deesnutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Trent Lott and George Allen in 2008.
America needs a change!
Let's bring back slavery. Vote Republican.
And remember ...
It ain't right,
if it isn't white. - KF6BBL, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@SirCharge
The fact that a member of government is dumbing down the issue to say that they all look the same is as retarded as you giving him a pass.
If I said to you that "it is hard for me to understand what is wrong with you", that makes the presumption that there is something wrong with you.
If I said that "you people all look alike" and was talking about black people here, imagine the crap I would take for that.
The basic concept that people with different opinions must look different works together with the thought that people that look different from me have a different opinion than mine.
There is a word for it...umm, thinking.... got it - Racism! - humann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8excellent point. it's hard to pick out the republicans--until they open their mouths. they look very similar to humans up to that point.
- theuber1337, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Maybe because the Iraqi's didn't do anything to us?
Maybe because we went in there and disrupted the balance of things for no good reason?
Maybe because in reality they were better off with Saddam, because with him the terrorists couldn't use Iraq as a foothold. But now they hold an area the size of Alabama in Iraq.
Maybe because you can't spell? - hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Quick! Somebody find a Sunni or Shiite that looks remarkably lke Trent Lott. Just about everyone looks remarkably like everyone else to some extent... Sheesh.
And what's up with the notion of killing a person based on how they look? That's the real question. - jbohlinger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Hell, I am an American and they look the same to me.
- martalli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I guess you don't know that Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on January 7th. We're a long way from understanding the Sunni Shia difference when we are overlooking differnces within the Christian religion.
- beni, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I prefer my gods cherry flavored with sprinkles.
- badken, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9"Lott was simply making a point that the groups who have been basically at war since the sun first rose over humanity are far more similar than they are different."
This is precisely the problem with the statement (and most of our political leaders' understanding of the region). They are similar *in appearance only*. In the ways that matter in their culture, they are vastly different. That we fail to grasp this simple truth is the reason we should not be trying to run things in the region. - KF6BBL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7In other new today, Osama Bin Laden released a taped comment today.
“It’s hard for Muslims, all of us, including me, to understand what ’s wrong with these people,” Osama Bin Laden said. “Why do they hate each other? Why do Republicans kill Democrats? How do they tell the difference? They all look the same to me." - Nevarius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Think it has more to do with exposure. If you only seen one black guy in your entire life you will most likely think they all look the same. On the other hand if you grew up with and socialized with black people (any race really, just using it as a example) you can tell the difference. Probably one of the reasons cities tend to be more for democrats and little town, USA tends to be more for republicans. In the city there's diversity of race and culture, thus the people tend to be more understanding of differences. In little town everyone is usually the same etc which anything different ,be it cultural or color, can bring a clash. Granted this isn't absolute. There's opened mined people in the country and closed mined people in the city.
The question is "should we allow such closed mined, out of touch with the public(and its diversity) people anywhere near leadership roles in our country - ctsamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5We don't want to give him the benefit of the doubt?
It could be a vastly profound statement.
We are all humans...we are ALL the same! Why can't we get along?!
Then again its Lott....never mind. - YossarianDent, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"mean as spit"...
Finally got the Innertube in Texas, did we? - gnuzi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8the subject "Why Do Sunnis Kill Shiites?" is too wrong...i feel sad... :(
there are three groups in iraq...one are the kurds...they dont like fighting...they just want to get as many advantage as they can from this war...and there are shiites (shi'a)...who are allies with the United States Of A'Holes against what they call terrorists...and there are sunnis which most of them are the resistance (called terrorists because they resist the occupation)...
now the subject asks why sunnis kill shi'as...it should be why shi'as kill sunnis...no not just killing...they torture first...they use drills and such horrible tools which u have never seen not even in the scariest movies...
lastest big thing they have done to sunnis is (BELIEVE THIS...I HAVE THE SOURCE IN ARABIC...LOOK DOWN) is kidnapping some sunni's 3 year old son and torturing him then burning him then cooking in an oven and putting him on a plate with salad...like a kabab...then putting it infront of the family's house...
those shi'as kill sunnis just because they are sunnis...one of their group say that if u spill a sunni's blood on a shi'as grave...all his/her sins will be cleared...
about exploding civilians...my personal thought (and also this is what the resistance say) is that it is done by those who want to make the resistance look bad...
these things might be new to some/most of you...it is just because of ur fcuked up media...i watched the american version of cnn/abc and some others...it is totaly fcuked up...they show things really differently...wait till jazeera international starts and then see the other sides openion (if not the truth)...
FACT:
shi'as religon is closer to christianity than it is to sunni/islam...

- Salmonized, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7another point: the Iraqis are probably asking the same question about democrats and republicans...they look the same to them...
- thepeacemaker, on 10/12/2007, -13/+17There is a saying in Swahili that roughly translates to: "If such are the priests, God bless the congregation" ...and give them the common sense to vote right this time.
- humanaut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I do, now :)
- benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6This makes me think of that episode of family guy, or maybe it was american dad.
"All I'm saying is put an israeli next to a palestinean and I cant tell the difference"
The subtext there is that we're all human and theyre just being ***** killing over an ideal that isnt necessarily even correct - Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12@cliffzdude -- Well, the thing is, it's easy to see how the press could take the "They all look the same to me" comment out of context and spin it so that Lott appears to be a racist. In context, Lott is making a valid point about the ignorance and ethnocentrism of most Americans, including himself.
I don't claim to know the whole Sunni/Shiite history. It's not a topic I studied. But I expect my elected representatives, who are waging a war in this area, to know a great deal more about it than I do. That's my problem with Lott's comments. It's not the racism, it's the pride he takes in his ignorance -- and the way he uses it to identify with the electorate. - patience, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You would think that after the trouble he got into after the Storm Thurmond issue, this guy would have a 30 second delay on his remarks...
Another reason why we shouldn't be over there...As Thailand and Ukraine showed, people can take care of a leader if they grow tired of him...Afghanistan should be the focus and not Iraq - DIGGerPhelpsND, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Here is a link to actual CNN article http://www.cnn.com/POLITICS/blogs/politicalticker/2006/09/lott-bush-barely-mentioned-iraq-in.html
Think Progress is just a little too partial for me. - sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3These politicians all look the same to me.
- unitethenations, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Partial is also appropriate - it can imply bias. But, you are probably right.
- martalli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Do you mean partisan?
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It makes perfect sense to me. It's only OK to kill people that look different than you. /sarcasm
- HanSolo69, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6AMEERRIIIICAA ***** YEAHHH!!!!!
- SIDSI, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Not as silly and unnecessary as killing people because of imaginary weapons of mass destruction.
- ddcrandall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Man. We need some people that actually realize that everything in the world isn't exactly like it is here. "They look alike, why are they killing each other?" He must have failed American history classes in school...or at leas the ones relating to the Civil War...
This man really needs an editor to follow him around and hit him when he starts saying stupid or racist things. - cviebrock, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Arabs, Swahilis ... they all look the same to me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4gnu:
>jews have a day where they need to use a blood of non jew...it is not important to be an arab blood...it can be any non jew baby blood...but those kind of parties are secret...it is not wise to make it public...
My friend always invites me over to his place for his big Christian baby feast. He says that the best babies are Christian babies, but only if they're cooked properly. Also he controls the banks, Hollywood, and all the press. I never forget to mention to him that he's inferior.
(Yes you idiots, this is sarcasm!) - pawchikapawpaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3dugg because it made me laugh.
also, because it reminded me of other faux pas, like hillary's plantation comment ("You know what I'm talking about...") and that dem congressman with the Indian to 7-11 comment and that repub congressman's comment about the taxi drivers and arabs. -
