- Churchill2004, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Excellent article.
- PeppermintPig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It is well written, story-like, without the negative connotations of drawing a subject out for too long. Me likey.
A contention...
FTA: "Paul’s doggedness in advancing the causes of individual responsibility and limited government could intimidate almost anyone who clings to the label “conservative” or “libertarian.”"
Intimidate? For the best conservatives and truest of libertarians, what Ron says and does should evoke inspiration, and that ever-rare 'positive feeling' towards politicians. Anybody in awe of what the man says is getting a good kick in the pants, though, hopefully motivating a positive reaction to the arguments he makes.
Observation
FTA:
"While Paul considers himself a staunch free trader, he opposed CAFTA and deplored its predecessor, NAFTA. Paul explains, “I was on the side of the protectionists, and I’m not a protectionist. It’s not true free trade. It’s special-interest trade. It’s managed trade. … I didn’t like the trade deal because it was another level of government and a loss of sovereignty.”"
It would have been better to start the paragraph with 'Because' rather than 'While', as it suggests Ron holds a contrary position. It's only contrary to the status quo in Washington, as those who support these WTO activities under the guise of 'free trade' are the ones who are contrary and misleading. Interesting that Buchanan says what he does, only to see Ron clarify his position.
Contention #2
FTA: "When questioned by Reason about what he’d say to libertarians who disagree with him, Paul was brusque: “If they don’t agree, they’d have to be anarchists, and I’m not. — I do believe in a responsibility to protect our borders, rather than worrying about the border between North and South Korea or Iraq and Syria, and I think that’s a reasonable position.”"
By that token, I assume Ron also appreciates the liberty to secede. If we are to believe he is a Libertarian, it's really stretching the limits for him to constrict away from Liberty like this. The best argument that could be made is that citizens deserve protection from foreign entities, and the US should not allow its citizens to infringe upon those foreign entities. That's about as reasoned a position one could take without adhering to Libertarianism in a more principled fashion. Anarchism has its own quirks from the standpoint that it's not a complete ideological template and many individuals of different stripes self-identify with Anarchy in some way.
FTA:
"“You just can’t turn one switch and solve every problem. You have to build coalitions. I’d put a lot of pressure on Congress to live up to their responsibilities.” He does know what he can do on day one of the Paul presidency. His first act would be to begin cleaning up the mess we’ve made in the Middle East: “What you could do in ten minutes to send a signal to the world that things were going to be different is tell the Navy to turn around and leave the shores of Iraq. We have two aircraft carriers there, another arriving, and seven ships that just moved into the Persian Gulf. I would just tell them to turn around and leave. Tell the region that this isn’t my approach, and I’m willing to talk. I think that would immediately raise our standing in the world tremendously.”"
An excellent first step, I believe. - Hortnon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Pat Buchanan supporting Ron Paul is a bad thing. Buchanan is a horrible person.
- PizzaGod, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Good Article. Very well researched. Even told things I didn't know and I have been a Ron Paul fan for years.
- vigilant53, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Great Article. Ron Paul is the last, best hope for our Republic. May we all work hard to get him elected and may God smile from heaven with pleasure and bless our efforts.
- silvertip, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Article's not there anymore.
