- NorthMass, on 05/18/2009, -3/+11Libertarians are the true conservatives. And there were a lot more libertarians at the tea parties than people are admitting. Remember, libertarians came up with the idea for tea parties in 2007. Neocons like Hannity tried to poison the image of tea parties once they became popular, but they failed for the most part.
- shankari46, on 05/18/2009, -2/+10Republicans like war, torture, spying on Americans, guns, big banks, big corporations, and lots of bribes. These are not exactly popular talking points right now. The Libertarians ought to trash the Republican party. At least they believe in peace and little/ low spending on defense.
- emazur, on 05/17/2009, -1/+7I wish 2/3 who showed up were libertarians, but IMO it was probably more like 2/3 of people who opposed the bailouts and/or Obama and/or Bush's legacy. The estimated 1/3 "red meat Palin republicans"? It's a bit odd for them to show up - Palin wanted a bailout: http://www.usnews.com/blogs/capital-commerce/2008/ ... Sarah Palin: Unfortunately, that is the road that America may find itself on. Not necessarily this, as it's been proposed, has to pass or we're gonna find ourselves in another Great Depression. But there has to be action taken, bipartisan effort—Congress not pointing fingers at this point at...one another, but finding the solution to this, taking action and being serious about the reforms on Wall Street that are needed.

:Phil Valentine knew what he was doing when he began his radio call-in show Thursday afternoon.
“You can’t even put in a nutshell what this movement is about,” Valentine intoned, referencing the anti-government, anti-spending tea parties held last month. “It is an anger. It is a simmering frustration with the direction of this government, and people are hopping mad.”
*Somewhat lengthy, but a good read. I like how it talked about the ingenuity and creativeness of the movement. - galeninjapan, on 05/18/2009, -3/+4Libertarians are not anarchists.
- inactive, on 05/18/2009, -3/+4Reading your comments hurts my brain. You write at an 8th grade level.
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 05/18/2009, -2/+2Try as they may to define it as such, the tea parties were not a libertarian movement. Rick Santelli and Michelle Malkin are not libertarians.
- PWoT, on 05/18/2009, -3/+3How many Libertarian presidents have we had? Senators? Congressmen? Governors? Hell, how many Libertarian mayors and city councilmen have we had?
That party exists purely on talk radio and on blogs. They have zero power, because they can't get enough votes to get elected Dog Catcher.
Prove me wrong.
- 3tcp, on 05/18/2009, -1/+1libertarian =/= Libertarian Party
- lanemik, on 05/19/2009, -1/+1What does it equal?
- inactive, on 05/18/2009, -3/+2Hey, professor:
You should pick up the book, "Anarchy, State and Utopia" written by Robert Nozick. It is a great piece of work and might open your eyes to the concepts of libertarian philosophy.
Minimal state is necessary in our society. however, an overly oppressive state can not be justified.
Libertarians get a bad rap because they're not understood and the majority of the issues they associate with are espoused by those who don't understand the philosophical structure behind it. (understandably so)
Even if you know where you stand politically, the reading is fascinating and complex. If you take the time, I think you will find that libertarians believe in a human's capacity to live at peace and prosper with one another.
However, I am Smith's "impartial spectator" and not capable of creating ideology strong enough to persuade your "man in the breast." I only ask that you consider the real school of libertarianism and not the watered down, shock laden version. - ProfessorSYM, on 05/18/2009, -4/+3A Libertarian is someone who only wants to be involved in government to the extent that they can dismantle it.
- ProfessorSYM, on 05/18/2009, -4/+2Could have fooled me, although it really sounds like they are more akin to utopians.
- rwsmart, on 05/18/2009, -5/+3You know, if the GOP could find a leader with more charisma than your average hermit crab, they could be successful no matter what label you put on them. Libertarian, Space Ninja, Party-of-Ultra-Cool (the PoUC). Whatever! It's the leader that makes the difference.
- lanemik, on 05/18/2009, -4/+1Oh you kooky, kooky libertarians.
- NoLibertarians, on 05/18/2009, -17/+5If the GOP lets the Libertarians mold their party they are in deep *****. Libertarians are the do nothing type leaders. In short indecisive and afraid to make a decision. The #1 issue is national defense in the party. .Libertarians have no defense policy other than to pray a lot. They make themselves look even more foolish with these tea parties. Then there is the earth shattering fact that that faction of the party includes Ron Paul, and we all know about his reputation. The party will be fine, this isn't the first time either party lost an election and had to regroup.
