- Insightful, on 10/10/2007, -0/+52Again with "the administration claims the Office of the Vice President is not part of the Executive Office of the President."
Either you are or you are not - you cannot claim exec privilege when it suits you. But that is beside the point of the obfuscation: there can be no doubt that VP is part of exec office of the President.
Time for a showdown Leahy. - satanatnmtedu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27It still doesn't matter. The system is of checks and balances. The job of the Congress is to check and balance the power of the Executive branch. Cheney is part of the Executive branch with a courtesy and honorary title of President of the Senate.
- swrostmore, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20In this same press briefing, Leahy pointed out that Cheney is again claiming (in a letter this morning) that he's not in the executive branch, to avoid complying with the subpoenas. Leahy also points out that Whitehouse.gov lists the Office of the Vice President under the executive branch. Idk if this is all in the video.

let the jackasses know whats up - Napoleone, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17This is not politics as usual. This is a constitutional crisis. Richard Cheney is a traitor to the Constitution and has failed his oath of office. Not only should he be impeached, he should be put on trial for his crimes. Alberto Gonzales should be impeached and tried. George W. Bush should be impeached and tried for crimes against the Constitution and the American people, and tried for crimes against humanity in bringing about the death of more than half a million people and for allowing torture in our names.
Any congressman or congresswoman who fails to take on the criminality of this administration head on with EVERY tool our Constitution provides them with, i.e., hearings, subpoenas, the purse AND impeachment, is not merely performing a dereliction of duty, they are acting as an accomplice to the crimes of this administration. - LordBalderdash, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17the guy shot a lawyer in the face with a shotgun and didn't get into any trouble. at this point he is fully convinced that he is above the law.
- MrKrinkleDude, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Leahy better watch out. If he doesn't, I guarantee that he will soon win himself a one-way ticket to GITMO. If anyone protests that, Bush and Cheney will be forced to nullify Congress a little sooner than they've planned.
- swrostmore, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15Leahy knows exactly what he's doing - which is, waiting for the Senate to get back in session, and then calling a vote of the Senate Judiciary Committee on whether or not to proceed with contempt charges. Leahy is ready to rock and roll, he's the last person you need to be heckling. I'd try contacting other members of the Judiciary Committee, specifically the ones with a (R) after their name. http://specter.senate.gov/ http://hatch.senate.gov/ http://grassley.senate.gov/ http://kyl.senate.gov/ http://sessions.senate.gov/ http://lgraham.senate.gov/ http://cornyn.senate.gov/ http://brownback.senate.gov/ http://coburn.senate.gov/

Cheney: "These are not the droids you are looking for."

They are the clear majority. - mwolfzorn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10"Each House may determine the rules of its proceedings, punish its members for disorderly behavior, and, with the concurrence of two thirds, expel a member."
http://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/constitution.articlei.html
Why doesn't the Senate with a 2/3rds vote expel Cheney from the Senate since he isn't a member of the executive branch and is obviously a member of the Senate. Then it will be clear after he still has a job he is a member of the executive branch... - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+14Wait.. GOP led Congress?? Did I miss something here?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Cheney: "Who do you $^&* think you are? I don't want to hear any more of this subpoena crap or I'll rip off your heads and crap down your necks."
Congress: whimper ... "Sorry, sir"
Cheney: "Damn right. I'll teach you to know who runs this household. You kids are grounded for the next 18 months. Leahy, bend over." (pulls his belt off) When you pay rent, you get to make decisions. Until then, *I* run this house." (whap! Whap! Whap!)
Leahy: "I won't do it again, Dad!"
--- the foregoing was a GOP fantasy brought to you by Exxon Mobil Masterpiece Theatre, Halliburton, and Blackwater. Keeping America safe, for over 6 years. So do as we say. - swrostmore, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11I'd say RTFA, but the relevant text is IN THE ***** ARTICLE DESCRIPTION: "In fact, the 109th Congress was about to issue subpoenas..."
- broohaha, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8And don't forget that the lawyer publicly APOLOGIZED to the vice president.
- kreneskyp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7trolls are out in force today
- ren1999, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I must remind you all that Germany was taken over by an organization not directly connected with the post war government. They were the Nazis. We have a lot of defense contractors from America replacing our military everywhere. Beware. Watch for the signs. Cheney has literally placed himself above the law by saying he isn't a part of the government. Bring him before the courts.
- broohaha, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Yeah, you did. Here's the relevant text:
"Well, you know, a lot of these questions were asked by the former chairman a couple years ago, and we haven’t gotten an answer.
"In fact, we were about to issue subpoenas then and one of the senators came to our meeting and said that the vice president had met with the Republican senators and told them they were not allowed to issue subpoenas."
So, he's referring to what happened two years ago when they, in a GOP-led Congress, tried to subpoena the White House. - shupy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8And people wonder why Republicans who want a political future are distancing themselves from the Whitehouse. The voters are watching. Just whining about democrats is not gonna save you. You have to stand up and work for the folks that elected you. If that means doing the right thing and issuing a subpoena, then do it. You may be a Republican, but that doesn't mean you should be a Bush/Cheney lapdog. You still have a job to do.
- youareretarded, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7So a team of senators took this information about not subpoenaing cheney and didn't bother to question it?
I think its obvious where these senators allegiance lies and its not with the american people! - relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -2/+7You mean the Executive Branch that Cheney claims he's not part of?

You can give your real address. As a US citizen, Leahy is YOUR elected representative no matter which state elected him, and he works for all of us. - nakani, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Dear Senator Leahy,
I am beyond frustrated with the current administration's utter contempt for civil liberties and adhering to the system of checks and balances our country was founded on. However, it is only the inaction of good men that allows crimes such as these to continue. I know you are trying to hold the president accountable, but you need to step it up and prove to your constituents that congress will not wait indefinitely and meekly refute obvious lies such as claims that the Vice President is not a part of the executive branch. If the administration does not budge, you must move for impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney to send a clear message to our government that they MUST represent us. They cannot simply do whatever they want, squander our taxdollars, and flush our country's beautiful legacy down the drain. If you do not do this, you are failing this country and the people who fought and died for freedom and liberty in the American Revolution and beyond. Thank you.
Sincerely,

- bizchris, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Why not, they already tried the anthrax route...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001_anthrax_attacks
Two more anthrax letters, bearing the same Trenton postmark, were dated October 9, three weeks after the first mailing. The letters were addressed to two Democratic Senators, Tom Daschle of South Dakota and Patrick Leahy of Vermont. The Daschle letter was opened by an aide on October 15, and the government mail service was shut down. The unopened Leahy letter was discovered in an impounded mail bag on November 16. The Leahy letter had been misdirected to the State Department mail annex in Sterling, Virginia, due to a misread zip code; a postal worker there, David Hose, contracted inhalation anthrax. - UnstableMind, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Change "popular" to "Main Stream".
