- onemanfilmcrew, on 10/10/2007, -1/+158It's sad when the best example of a journalist in the country is a comedian.
- iDragonFly, on 10/10/2007, -5/+110Jon Stewart would make a very fine statesman.
He manages to make his point without pulling an O'Reilly.
Can you imagine how much more productive and (may I say) pleasant these threads would be if we (yes, I include myself) could all follow his example?
Oh well, I can dream, right? - 3lijah, on 10/10/2007, -3/+44John Stewart is one of the few people in the world who can talk respectively and calmly to someone he disagrees with completely and someone he does not respect whatsoever.
People in here are talking about how Stewart should have been meaner to Kristol, and how Stewart pussied out have probably never seen an actual debate. This is how politicians should be talking to each other. - BrapAllgood, on 10/10/2007, -0/+40Well, if he IS a pussy, then it's a good thing there was a big douche handy....
- gdog05, on 10/10/2007, -1/+38That's too bad, Billy Kristol has fallen so far since City Slickers. :P
- exomni, on 10/10/2007, -0/+31John Stewart is actually a very classy, intelligent, and respectable man.
Not to mention damn funny. - Bhima, on 10/10/2007, -2/+33I don't agree with much of what Bill Kristol says... but you got to credit him, at least he knows what the daily show is all about.
I got a good laugh out of that. - InsomniaSlim, on 10/10/2007, -1/+31He had to be civil... otherwise people would claim he was biased. I thought his calm, pointed questioning exposed more of Kristol's Krap than pounding on him. Besides, he wants Kristol to come back on the show.
I hate it when Bill O'Reilly "grills" people. It's retarded half the time and you end up wondering why someone would go on in the first place. - IrishJoe, on 10/10/2007, -4/+29So Bush doesn't think Jon Stewart is a pussy. But Gen. Patreus does. Oh, well.
- evilregis, on 10/10/2007, -3/+27That's ridiculous. John Stewart doesn't do hard interviews. He'd have a similar interview with Hitler. John's an entertainer not a hard-hitting investigative journalist.
- Wargalas, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25If more people here on Digg had conversations like that one, I think we'd have a much more constructive place instead of "ZOMG, BUSH IZ TEH SATAN!" and "UR A FAG!"
- g30ff, on 10/10/2007, -3/+24***** you, *****!
:) - Bajeda, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21"any other news program" - The Daily Show is a comedy program, not a news show.
- InsomniaSlim, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19You obviously haven't seen his interviews on Charlie Rose or on PBS. He often has very good ideas based on what he has read or gleaned from experts he has interviewed himself. I often find myself more interested in his serious side, and wonder how much he has to "throttle back."
- svenathon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20A news satire on Comedy Central that runs after Mind of Mencia does not qualify as Mainstream Media, Stewart works hard to emphasize that
- moosetoga, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Can't get too down on Digg for this... civility is pretty rare Web-wide.
- lordmutt, on 10/10/2007, -10/+26Bill your an idiot, the US people didn't vote the Democrats in to slap the president on the wrist and "Have a proper strategy for Iraq" but to "GET OUT!!!" of Iraq
- Synn, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18Nobody cares if you buried this story, so no need to tell us.
- g30ff, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16They're friends. I thought it was a great interview. Kristol is clearly a very intelligent (and very wrong) guy. Jon made his points but gave Kristol a chance to speak and respond. The interview was humorous rather than being painfully embarrassing the way it would have been if he'd just attacked Kristol the whole time. Too many journalists seem to have trouble finding a middle ground between sycophant and attack dog, but neither of these traits are much help in exploring the issues. They would do well to take a lesson from this interview.
- exomni, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15I assume "pulling an O'Reilly" means "being an incoherant ***** nazi jackass *****".
And to oldhick, we need intelligent people in entertainment willing to talk about things, even if it's only to make cheap jokes about it. I certainly respect Jon Stewart twisting things to make them funny over O'Reilly twisting things because he's ***** feces. - Pilot85, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Also to be fair, Stewart is not a politician. His JOB IS TO BE FUNNY. That's why he felt like he could vent on crossfire - it wasn't his job to make people laugh there, and he had a point to make. Here, his own butt is on the line if the show stops being funny and becomes another preachy political talk show. So yeah, he may have pussed out, but it was his prerogative to do so. Stop trying to make him fill shoes he doesn't want.
- MrBone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11He's the host of a satiric "news" show, What exactly did you expect? Just shows how screwed you are if you think this is real news and hardcore onsite reporting....
- brianbennett, on 10/10/2007, -10/+21Every time Stewart has a conservative guest on his show, I can rest assured I'll find the obligatory "Jon Stewart PWNS whoever" story the next day, even though there were good arguments on both sides.
- matador3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12I can't believe there are people on here defending Bill Kristol. I don't care how edjumicated or respectified he is; He has been completely wrong about EVERYTHING! He has no credibility. I'm really at a loss.
http://www.thenation.com/blogs/capitalgames?bid=3&pid=153112 - GabrielS, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Right on. Why aren't the Democrats stopping this war then? They can cut the funds for the war right now. Why aren't they?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12I don't think it's watched by more people than the big 3's nightly news. I'm pretty sure that Fox News' O'Reilly Factor and Hannity and Colmes gets significantly more viewers per night than TDS does, too.
- Wargalas, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13Are you sure about that? Can you reasonably state that you can speak for the rest of America? Or could it be that people were tired of the corruption? There's a ton of reasons why Republicans lost control of Congress in 2006, and Iraq wasn't the only reason.
- profOblivion, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Exactly the point that he made on that famous episode of Crossfire.
- robisfunky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8 Agreed.... There's something about the relative anonymity of posters that really makes civility a rare commodity. I am guilty of it myself. It's like if everyone else inm the room is shouting, you feel like the only way you can be heard is to shout also. Makes for a very noisy place.
- browwiw, on 10/10/2007, -6/+14Jon would make a far better soldier than you would, you Chicken Hawk College Republican *****.
- hlcno, on 10/10/2007, -11/+19I hate that guy more then Bush. He's such a piece of ***** scum bag. He should be put out in the town square and hung. You hear how excited he gets when Jon talks about going to war with Iran.. these neocons need to just die.
- profOblivion, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8That's what we like to call "civilized discourse". You know, where people argue for and against positions on issues, without passing judgment on the people themselves.
- multitude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Hah - he says that the surge is going better than it was in January. 200+ people died yesterday in bombings! Time to get out and quit lying so that the neocons can get richer.
- stg3095, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Yes, because if you disagree with someone you should wish them dead.
"He should be put out in the town square and hung."
".. these neocons need to just die." - deathweaver108, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8you ask people to come on a show and explain their point of view, ask them a hard question or two, and be respectful. This is what Stewart does and is why he gets so many different people from all walks of life.
It wouldn't be much of a show if he just set every one of his guests on fire and made them look like a fool for having their beliefs. - Terr01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Someone else who says "pull an O'Reilly"? Dugg up :P
- hierophantus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7If that's the standard, then what are O'Reilly's awesome "solutions" to all the problems he bitches about at high volume day in and day out? Or does your criticism only apply to people you disagree with politically?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6So my country can be free! (so my country can be free..)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9I think you're a pussy wingnut.
- evilregis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I'm Ron Burgandy?
- PhillipL, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6News anchors actually just have to be in tune with the teleprompter they have no clue what the hell is going on. They just read. Stay Classy.
- evilregis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Brain power?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Sadly it is, that's what you get when the press are all corporate sycophants.
And Bill Kristol a smart man? Give me a break. That idiot has been wrong about every single aspect of the Iraq war, but that doesn't tell him (or you) anything, on to the next 'frischer frölicher Krieg' just like the Germans in WWI. - Daedalos, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7What does "conservative" mean? What are you "conserving?"
- MacEnvy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7onemanfilmcrew clearly said "journalist", not "news anchor". There is a big difference.
Stewart is hands down the best "news" anchor on TV today. The fact that his show occasionally steps into the bounds of journalism as well is great. What's sad is that he does a better job of it than the people who are actually SUPPOSED to be journalists. - MacEnvy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7"Friends" is putting it a bit strongly. Way, way too strongly in fact. It appears that Jon holds Kristol at least partially responsible for the administration's foreign policy failures over the last 7 years.
Don't forget, Bill Kristol is the founder and chairman of PNAC, the most evil organization in the world (more or less). - yutt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6John Gabriel's Greater Internet ***** Theory?
http://www.penny-arcade.com/images/2004/20040319h.jpg - Obsidian743, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6My thoughts exactly. I thought it was a well balanced "discussion". It's not like Jon tore into the guy and embarrassed the conservatives like most here would like.
- MacEnvy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6All that tells us is that there isn't enough news content on the other shows.
- lovek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I love when people say they don't take Stewart seriously "anymore." He wasn't supposed to be taken seriously in the first place! He earned the respect that got him taken seriously.
And now you don't take him seriously because he's on Comedy Central?
That logic just... blows my mind. -
