Jimmy Carter, Barack Obama, and a Failing Foreign Policy
thecandidacy.com — Obama said he would talk directly with Iran and Syria and got hammered for it by the status quo (aka the Washington Consensus). I say go for it. Meet face to face …get on Air Force One and have tea in Tehran…eat Kimchi in North Korea…smoke a stogie in Havana. Break the cycle. Shake things up.

In that speech he tells us he would have troops in Iraq when he is president and would also devote more resources in Afghanistan and war with Pakistan.
If the Bush foreign policy is a failure then Obamaplan is lunacy.
With all of the lies he has told so far and the promises he has broken and his penchant for disarming Americans coupled with his total lack of any experience in foreign policy shows he is no different than the other two Senators. - jontalisman, on 04/28/2008, -4/+4Reminding people of Jimmy Carter when you want them to support Obama doesn't seem like a good idea to me. But hey, do your thing 'cause it's only going to help Hillary!
- RHMiller, on 04/28/2008, -1/+2I'm not Obama's campaign manager (thank God). He can sell himself. I do agree with you though, there are certain names that Dems do not want to be associated with...like Carter and Dukakis.
- redcolumbine, on 04/28/2008, -3/+8"The Bush administration’s black and white, cut and dry “with us or against us” foreign policy is crippling and makes us look silly. Why? Because we arrogantly declare that we will not even speak with some states (and pseudo-states) unless they meet preconditions. This is self-defeating for two reasons. First, these preconditions will never be met because it’s like asking foreign leaders to castrate themselves in front of their own constituents – not gonna happen. Second, we criticize some states for committing human rights violations that often pale in comparison to those of our closest allies. Did we hope nobody would notice the double-standard?"
- bringmeupmusic, on 04/28/2008, -3/+2You know, I fear the democratic party fighting between Hillary and Obama will only hurt the party in the end. Come November when the true decision must be made I hope it doesn't cause McCain to win. I wish the united could stand together, but I feel the divided cause too big a rift.
- bringmeupmusic, on 04/28/2008, -3/+4In response to cashman...I read the speech at the link you supplied and I disagree with your sentiment. "By refusing to end the war in Iraq, President Bush is giving the terrorists what they really want, and what the Congress voted to give them in 2002: a U.S. occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences."
- cashman57, on 04/28/2008, -1/+2Yet every time the subject of funding the Iraq use of force came up he voted for the funding. If I was against chevies I would not go buy one, would you?
I am glad you read the speech, most people who dugg me down didn't even bother.
Obama made some very specific promises as to what will happen if he's president and peace wasn't one of them.
He will indeed make things worse as will any globalist warmonger. What sets him apart is his total lack of eadership skills and if you are going to command the best military force on the planet you should be able to lead. His simplistic and naive foreign policy statements coupled with his penchant for war will only bring disaster and depression.

- lgfaphile, on 04/28/2008, -3/+7Does the name Neville Chamberlain ring any bells with Diggers?
- cquinnd, on 04/29/2008, -2/+3Opening a dialogue is not appeasement. Especially when the current powers that be have not even gone so far as to open a dialogue.
- lgfaphile, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3When you are dealing with tyrants like the Iranian President, talking doesn't work. They will happily take whatever concessions are offered, and then resume the demands and threats. Don't ignore history.
- bosssmiley, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2Engagement != appeasement.
- jontalisman, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2You've got to be kidding! Most diggers are barely old enough to have learned to wipe their butt properly.

- RHMiller, on 04/28/2008, -3/+3Thanks for the comment, Igfaphile. Direct communication doesn't mean a foot massage and table games. It just means direct negotiations. Chamberlain failed because he was a pussy, not because he agreed to talk.
- joniknows, on 04/29/2008, -2/+3I don't believe Obama has a clue of what he's doing. I don't believe any of the candidates do. So now what?
