Is Obama a Sell-Out? Amy Goodman of DemocracyNow! responds
democracynow.org — AI was on a panel at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado this week when Newsweek ’s Jonathan Alter asked me, “Is Obama a sellout?” The question isn’t whether he is a sellout or not—it’s about what demands are made by grass-roots social movements of those who would represent them. The question is, who are these candidates responding to,answering to?

Frederick Douglass: “Power concedes nothing without a demand.” Now, let's DO something about it! - yellowcakewalk, on 07/03/2008, -2/+33Someone denied my assertion yesterday that Obama voted to extend the PATRIOT Act. Obama voted YEA on H.R. 3199 on Mar 2, 2006.

- mecanofan, on 07/03/2008, -2/+17I knew this was coming. It was just a matter of time. He gets the nomination that he can change positions.
- yellowcakewalk, on 07/03/2008, -2/+12Don't expect the occupation of the middle east to end anytime soon. George the panhandler on Wisconsin Avenue has more change than Obama.
- yellowcakewalk, on 07/03/2008, -3/+24Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) promised primary voters a swift withdrawal from Iraq, in clear language still on his website: “Obama will immediately begin to remove our troops from Iraq. He will remove one to two combat brigades each month and have all of our combat brigades out of Iraq within 16 months.”
Not anymore. Heading into the holiday weekend, Obama and his advisers repudiated that pledge, saying he is reevaluating his plan and will incorporate advice from commanders on the ground when he visits Iraq later this month.

Obama = The Status Quo Candidate- SaraLiberty, on 08/16/2008, -0/+11Like the commanders are going to say "let's end the war Barack!" and 'bring the troops home', right...Obama is 2-faced to extremes. He knows they are going to request more of our tax money to keep the war fraud and killing massacre-for-profit going. He knows they will encourage his support to further the war so he will in turn carry out the plan, business as usual. No war means they don't have jobs. Like they're going to cut off their taxpayer funded employment checks? Stop the endless profiteering by defense industries, military industrial complex and central banking system? Sure.. It's all bull *****. Obama= another soundbite parroting slick talker empty suit who tells you what you want to hear, then does about face come action time. He's a neo-con wannabe. "Neocon lite"...
Mr. Obama has pledged "unshakable support" for Israel, an overseas country which commits terrorists acts and is in direct, illegal violation of countless UN violations, a prosperous nation with billions of dollars in military equipment, nuclear weapons and submarines supplied by USA. They receive 5 billion dollars per year (accounted for..) of our tax money from the US government in "foreign aid."..Israels government is pressuring the USA for hostile corporate takeover (war) on Iran with Syria next. That's where this war ***** is coming from. Don't kid yourself. It has nothing to do with "WMD" those are the same lies we were marketed with IRAQ, remember? They want to (ab)use our military blood and money to go fight their wars for them. They buy our politicians to get what they want, regardless of the will of the American people. They buy our sold out senate and congress to vote in favor of their self-serving political agenda. They buy our presidents and 'elected officials. Why can't we "vote" on that *****? Why don't the American people have any say in this "war" garbage. Real issues which affect our future and livelihood. We have no say in the matter whatsoever. If voting really changed things, it would be illegal. The entire system is rigged against us.
Our "representatives" no longer represent us, they represent "special interests" who bribe them. And ultra-wealthy lobbies who dictate American foreign policy in the middle east and buy them out with "political favors." America has the best politicians money can buy. Unfortunately, few Americans can afford to own one.
The current crop of sold out puppets-on-strings scurry to bow to AIPACs every request, demand and order without a single protest, without ANY input from us, the American citizens, we the people. Think about that.
Obama is a loyal, allegiant and obedient servant of AIPAC, a questionable lobby which has no place in our government, no place buying and selling politicians of a free country for their own self-serving interests. What kind of B.S. is that? That's not what America is about. America wasn't founded to prop up, fund and support known terrorism-committing nations at American citizens expense, lives and tax money. Why doesn't Obama run for prime minister of Israel then? If he is so concerned about supporting their wars, pledging them his "unshakable support" and patronizing their governments policy & needs over Americas and the American people. What a farce. Who does he work for, anyway?
Obama works for AIPACs best interests, not Americas or the American peoples best interest. He will scamper to do whatever they request of him. Including war on Iran (another scam). Obama isn't fighting to protect Americas Constitution. He isn't pledging "unshakable support" of our Bill of Rights and making this country a better place by rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure, roads, bridges and buildings across the nation. He isn't pledging to build factories in America to create jobs and industry as was done centuries ago in this country. Why bother with that? AIPAC comes first. Their agenda is his 1st priority. He isn't working to defend and protect our privacy rights and American freedoms guaranteed under the Constitution. He instead votes to legislate them away, sell us out under false pretense of "doing the right thing" for who, exactly? As he flashes his charismatic smile and waves his hand. He is OWNED by greater masters. And will only carry out their murderous, war profiteering agenda at our expense. Over 1.5 million Iraq civilians murdered on lies. Over 4 million displaced, homeless refugees - the biggest refugee problem in recent history. Over 4000 US troops and service people slaughtered. Countless more permanently maimed, butchered, PTSD'd and limbless for life. Compliments of PNAC schemer war fetishist lies. For what?
This fraudulent hostile corporate takeover (war) will go down as one of the biggest mistakes in history. May the PNAC profiteers one day have their own Nuremberg Trials for their crimes against humanity and the world. Obama will only continue to support their war, not end it. Think he's doing to cutoff the massive profit being generated anytime soon? LOL!! Get real. He'd be 'suicided.' His masters would never permit such an irrational, controversial decision. He doesn't decide *****. He is only a puppet on strings, a face, a presence to dangle in front of the idiot American consumers of a controlled, treasonous television & print media. A fall guy. He runs nothing. His employers are much greater masters than 'we the people' our purpose is for cannon fodder and taxes, to throw a bone come voting time so we can feel we "have influence." The politicians exist to give you the idea you have freedom of choice. You don't You have OWNERS. They own your political puppets and government. Are you ready for the change candidate?- GovernmentSp00k, on 07/04/2008, -0/+8I like what you have to say there, Ms. SOGL. Well expressed! It got me thinking about a few things. Which is always a good thing ; )
As you are aware, John McCain and Hillary Clinton are also loyal servants of AIPAC and the pressure for continued war in the Middle East. All top-tier candidates are. They prefer not to openly advertise this fact.
You'd think if this influential lobby was beneficial to our country and way of life, they would be openly taking about its existence, praising and promoting like it's the second coming. But they prefer you know as little as possible to avoid having to answer uncomfortable questions which pertain to their direct involvement. Keep it under wraps, if you will. To avoid open discussion. We are on a need to know basis. Most of what we need to know, they don't tell us!
Barack Obama isn't the only one groveling at AIPACs feet pledging devoted, unshakable support for their agenda. The current crop of presidential hopeful lobbyist groupie candidates will bow to whatever their well connected financiers desire. With no input from the American public, as you mentioned previously. They instead prefer we be kept out of the loop completely. Is this what representative Democracy in the U.S.A. has become?
Who are the politicians going to listen to, a wealthy, powerful and intimidating foreign lobby with deep connections to the administration that offers them millions in bribes, monetary payoffs and political favors? Or us average common folk American citizens living from paycheck to paycheck with barely enough extra spending money to put gas in our cars to go to work each day to put food on the table. You do the math.
How can America claim to be Democratic, free and of the people when we have a clandestine CFR which operates outside of the Constitution and well financed foreign lobby's across the globe who buy our politicians and decide the fate of our nation and future behind closed doors? - relic180, on 07/04/2008, -0/+4@GovernmentSp00k
Technically speaking, according to the administration and the major corporate party representatives, we are on a "need to not know" basis.
And America can claim to be Democratic because our 'bought and paid for' elected representatives and our corporate media say so, and most of us are too stupid or too lazy to question it.

- kirkultra, on 07/03/2008, -5/+10That's why we've got to vote for Cynthia McKinney.
- caferrell, on 07/04/2008, -0/+6If we want to reclaim our country, we may vote for McKinney, Baldwin, Nader or Barr.
I suggest Barr because I am a conservative (a real conservative)
If you believe that government can be free from the control of the powerful interests, then vote for Ms. McKinney or Mr. Nader, but DON'T VOTE FOR OBAMA OR MCCAIN- mystcnurse, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1No matter WHAT!!!!
I agree. The only way to vote is 3rd party. It doesn't matter which of the other two get in, things will stay as they are... actually, they are going to get a lot worse! Anyone who is uneducated, disempowered and/or brainwashed enough to vote for either McInsane or Obama needs to stay home and watch their favorite reality show. Please.

- sherrife, on 07/03/2008, -2/+10The forces involved in the american political framework - late-stage capitalism as expressed through corporations and special interest lobby groups - are far too strong to be overcome by one individual, even if that person WAS genuinely left-wing.
As the last line of the article said, nothing is going to change in this world unless we make it happen from below. - yellowcakewalk, on 07/04/2008, -1/+8And again, where does he stand on granting immunity to telecoms that engaged in illegal spying on citizens?
- relic180, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3He supports them, and will probably make use of their illegal spying services once he's in office.
- brad3378, on 07/04/2008, -2/+1Obama stands for change.
- goodnrg, on 07/04/2008, -3/+1It does damage to the article when she portrays Obama's statement "I’ve always been a proponent of free trade" as some sort of flip-flop. He has always been a proponent of well-negotiated agreements that respect labor and environmental laws and has said so publicly many times. This is not incompatible with his saying he has a problem with a specific agreement, NAFTA. If the author wants to write a story about an apparent move to the center, that's one thing, but don't distort the facts.
- relic180, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5Well, I didn't find it out of context, as I found this statement: "sometimes things get heated... I've always been a proponent... etc" to be a qualifier if you will. A way to take the edge off of his direct verbal opposition to NAFTA so that the stage is set later on for him to compromise (see, support) for the continued progression of the agreement.
He's already shown that his 'fight for the little guy' rhetoric does not match up with his 'cater to the corporate overlord' behavior. Why would this issue be any different?- mystcnurse, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1I mean, the free trade highway is coming. How can Obama get around THAT?
