- alenox, on 10/26/2008, -0/+13I'm starting to like this Frank Rich guy... someone who can criticize the MSM and put the race issue into proper perspective.
- DavidTrom, on 10/26/2008, -0/+11This is my favorite quote on this article:
"The dirty little secret of such divisive politicians ........ their cynical conviction that Real Americans are a benighted bunch of easily manipulated bigots" - stackolee, on 10/26/2008, -0/+9This is a novel concept for the election cycle, that the majority race in America might have a shred of decency come November 4th. Ever since Obama gained momentum--back in January, though it seems longer--every facet of the media, from mainstream to local radio spoke of those portions of white America who could only say either "Black, bad!" or "Beer me", and would lumber about their polling place like Romero zombies.
- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -0/+6Hey, dontcha know Republicans are color blind?
- ThsGuyRightHere, on 10/26/2008, -0/+5One of the points in TFA is that the right seems to have lost sight of what exactly constitutes "real America". You can see evidence of this disconnect when they talk try to cast Obama as a socialist or a communist, invoking the fear America felt during the cold war.
guess what? that's a period that came and went 20 years ago. There's a huge chunk of the voting population that can't remember the cold war, and doesn't even associate "socialist" with the USSR and communists.
What the MCCain camp doesn't realize is that Americans will not longer be bullied by fear. I'm not afraid of socialists or commies. But I am afraid of four more years of Republican leadership. - ThsGuyRightHere, on 10/26/2008, -0/+2No kidding... if there were a candidate whose ideology aligned with mine 100%, and who had no skeletons in his closet and was clearly qualified, but who employed tactics like McCain and the Republican party, appealing to fear and divisveness... that would turn me off from them in a heartbeat.
- publiclurker, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2Yup, everything is white and !white.
- dBass, on 10/26/2008, -0/+2Well done (again) Frank!
So much has changed in America (and the world) for the better. The catalysts include, decades of desegregation, higher education available to more people of color and of modest means, the Internets, the Youtubes, and the complete failure of deficit spending and trickle-down economic fraud, to name a few.
Frank Rick mentions how the McSame camp didn't learn anything from that scumbag Allen or HRC. One of the key lessons McCain missed was how the Google and the Youtubes helped to sink HRC, with her tall tales of dodging sniper fire as she hit the LZ in the war zone.
Obama and intellectually curious voters have leveraged these technologies marvelously to shed light on McCain/Palin's deep, dark smears and lies.
Things are different now. - algaeturd, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2I think we learned a long time ago that you can't judge an entire race by the actions of a few. Race IS an issue in this election, particularly in the south. Who knows if it's enough of an issue to make it a game changer, but suggesting that it's not an issue is as bad as suggesting that race is the ONLY issue here.
You have to see people for who they are individually. There are some who make no bones about it...they'll proudly tell you that they would never vote for a black presidential candidate. But hopefully, for every uneducated fool, there is at least one educated American that can see the truth beyond the color. - cowguin, on 10/26/2008, -5/+1what is this Lost?
