- Hetman, on 12/31/2008, -6/+106To quote Bill Maher. 40% of Neocons want Palin to run for president next term. 100% of liberals also want palin to run for president the next term.
- muckemuck, on 12/31/2008, -24/+81 .. Change.
Their hand is already being seen in the appointments to the Obama cabinet. - ThsGuyRightHere, on 12/31/2008, -14/+69Sorry but I don't think anyone on the left would touch these cats with a ten foot pole.
- Nekura20x6, on 12/31/2008, -6/+56The extreme right is destroying the GOP. I think a lot of people will be better served if they split into two different parties.
- wunksta, on 12/31/2008, -3/+48bring back fiscal conservatism
- vbullinger, on 12/31/2008, -7/+43Neocons, indeed, did come from the left. Congressman Ron Paul explains everything beautifully here:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4156174553 ...
Even if you don't like Ron Paul, listen to that video (a speech he gave in front of Congress) if you don't like neoconservatives. He gives all the background information you'd ever need to understand neoconservatives, where they originated, what they're all about, who they are, etc. - richmomz, on 12/31/2008, -17/+48The neocons (actually just a sub branch of the Counsel on Foreign Relations) has firm control over both parties. They aren't going anywhere.
- d0ctaew, on 12/31/2008, -9/+40listen to Ron Paul more?
- apothekari, on 12/31/2008, -25/+54Amen, Don't you goddamn DARE to try to make these ***** Liberals after the fact!
ANYONE who spoke against these evil bastards were shouted down and called TRAITORS and worse by YOU!!
You couldn't embrace them tight enough!
Now that the Republican party lies on its stomach , with a sticky back, a sore ass, all the money gone off the dresser, and a stiff breeze blowing thru the open window beside the bed, You Bastards want to call RAPE!
Well tough, you were ready to throw us in Guantanamo in the name of patriotism, ready to Insult us at every ***** turn by questioning our love of this country.
You spat on us, called us ignorant, liars or worse, terrorists.
And now you want to make those resposible for the mess we're now in,The people you couldn't wait to vote for DEMOCRATS?!!
***** you and the horse you rode in on!
I will NEVER forget who these people were, so don't EVEN try! - oldhick, on 12/31/2008, -0/+25People don't know what that means today. They think its lower taxes.
- deathcannon, on 12/31/2008, -3/+27I hope they just go away.
- Ne007, on 12/31/2008, -2/+24they are stealthy, have lots of inside ties and power. they can put people where they want them and have people on both sides in order to assure their agenda. they are not truly repubs or democrats. they are anti-american infiltrators bent on global government and bringing down national sovereignty. They have their eyes on the prize in every country on the planet.
- GreyFlcn, on 12/31/2008, -0/+22You have to dig pretty far back for a fiscally conservative Republican....

http://greyfalcon.net/doonsbury.png - inactive, on 12/31/2008, -9/+28Otiose?! The dude uses a word like OTIOSE in the first line of his article?
Anyhoo, the neocons won't go away any time soon. They truly believe they are on a mission from God, and that there is a "purpose" to their "mission.
But hopefully more people now realize how destructive they are in thought and deed. - DanOnTheMoon, on 12/31/2008, -0/+19There are clear perils from isolationism and imperialism. Non-interventionism, I believe, would do many nations - America included - a world of good.
- michaelpinto, on 12/31/2008, -17/+35Imperialism is neither left or right wing and it wasn't something seen in the US until the Spanish-American War which was promoted by yellow journalism (think Fox News) in 1898. However there is a real danger is isolationism — which is part of what created World War II when the US left the Treaty of Nations (like what the UN bashers want us to do today). America needs to come home to an FDR mindset which helped free so many colonies after World War II — yet remain engaged in the world stage.
- inactive, on 12/31/2008, -3/+21They appear to be good at tricking people. Don't be too trustworthy of those who seem to be so. That is how they got the GOP.
- vbullinger, on 12/31/2008, -1/+19I think the problem is this false left/right paradigm. It's not just left/right, we have to think about statism/freedom.
Neocons are statists. _Sometimes_, liberals are statists, too. Dennis Kucinich, on the other hand, actually pushes for SMALLER government than neocons. Yet, Kucinich is far more liberal than Obama, for example.
Neocons are not liberals, never have been. They are statists. They don't care in which party they need to reside, as there are plenty of neocons that are "Democrats," too. I remember when Tucker called Hillary a neocon. Very accurate.
Here's a really nice website explaining this statism/freedom part of the picture: http://www.politicalcompass.org/uselection2008. Clearly shows how more left Kucinich is than the moderates that got much more attention. - Imagist, on 12/31/2008, -0/+18I wouldn't say they are incompetent. They achieved a remarkable number of their goals. It's just that those goals sucked.
- dickeywayne, on 12/31/2008, -2/+19I joined the Republican Party because I support limited government, balanced budgets, and Constitutional freedoms.
I left the Republican Party for the exact same reasons. - tattertech, on 12/31/2008, -3/+19And the vast majority of people that identify themselves as liberals in this country don't fit the classical liberal definition either.
- TrevorNoble, on 01/01/2009, -1/+17In January 2005, when asked by Meet the Press's Tim Russert whether he would have voted to authorize the war-"knowing that there are no weapons of mass destruction"-Emanuel answered yes. (He didn't take office until after the vote.) "I still believe that getting rid of Saddam Hussein was the right thing to do, okay?" he added.
He's an interventionist who believes might makes right. Seems neoconservativish to me - vbullinger, on 12/31/2008, -2/+17How so, Imagist? Restoring the Constitutionally mandated bimetallism? That's currency backed by gold and silver (don't forget the "and silver" part) for those not wanting to look it up. When we had our currency backed by both, our dollar held completely stable, with only the most minor of fluctuations.
When we went to JUST the gold standard, the dollar started to slip downward, as gold is scarce and easy to horde.
When we dropped the gold standard, the dollar fell precipitously, and it has been doing so for decades.
He's just saying restore the Constitution, everywhere. And, economically, that means bimetallism. - WhiteHatTrick, on 12/31/2008, -3/+18Why would anyone want to go back to the time when we actually had free markets and corporations didn't run our government?
- DanOnTheMoon, on 12/31/2008, -9/+24Rahm Emmanuel.
- vbullinger, on 12/31/2008, -5/+20We were not isolationists in WWII.
We gave aid to one side and put sanctions on the other. Both of those actions are war crimes. I'm not talking about aid as in Band-Aids and Neosporin, I'm talking about guns and money. We crippled Japan's economy. They attacked us out of desperation.
As congressman Charles Lindbergh pointed out in this speech - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_F48oaOskI - FDR's administration was breaking its back to get into the war.
I agreed with your first sentence, whole-heartedly. But we've been interventionists, constantly, since then.
I sure as Hell do not want an FDR mindset at all. - DanOnTheMoon, on 12/31/2008, -2/+16Well, they were Authoritarians posing as 'Liberals', anyhow. They surely weren't Voltaire or Bastiat - style classical liberals.

BURIED - DanOnTheMoon, on 12/31/2008, -1/+15Oh, you know fiscal conservatives are all conspiracy theorists and live in their parents' basements until they're 35. /s
- Ne007, on 12/31/2008, -1/+15Neocons are not far right fiscally. They only pretend to be far right socially for the vote and only talk about cutting taxes....nothing otherwise.
They would sell their mothers for war money. - mdbsat, on 12/31/2008, -0/+12SO true. I am scared of people that think Palin would be a good leader. Honestly, scared.
- oldhick, on 12/31/2008, -0/+12Quite true. Pretending they're not well organized, intelligent, and well funded will guarantee their return. They are a formidable bunch.
- vbullinger, on 12/31/2008, -5/+17Ron Paul doesn't advocate the "fair tax" system. John McCain and Mike Huckabee did that.
Ron Paul says "End the IRS, income tax and Federal Reserve and replace them with nothing."
More like "do wonders for the middle class." - tattertech, on 12/31/2008, -3/+14You mean increased government spending and reduced taxes isn't fiscal conservatism!?
- Maddoktor2, on 12/31/2008, -6/+17The GOP can keep their neocon standardbearers and follow them right into oblivion.
- natmaster, on 01/01/2009, -0/+11Freedom of speech is so old fashion. So is Habeas Corpus. Who would want to restore the government to a time when these were the law?
- Klamath9, on 12/31/2008, -0/+11Wait, are you saying it's not fiscally conservative to lower taxes and then borrow more from the Chinese?
That's crazy talk! - buckrogers1965, on 12/31/2008, -1/+11They call themselves neocons.
I have heard Kristol refer to himself as a "Neocon" in a speech before a college audience and he wrote a book called "The Neoconservative Imagination."
If a group calls themselves by a name, it is generally acceptable to also use that name that they have for themselves. - inactive, on 12/31/2008, -5/+14By letting us keep the money we earn?
- TrevorNoble, on 12/31/2008, -7/+16Supporting the Iraq war and being in the Israeli army (extreme Zionist) does.
- DanOnTheMoon, on 12/31/2008, -5/+14Ahh, 'Shut the ***** up' - intarwebzese for 'I'm out of arguments'.
- OMGscience, on 12/31/2008, -0/+9The far sides of both parties are threats to what America is meant to be. ANYONE who wants to control the way you think and live is a threat.
- inactive, on 12/31/2008, -0/+9GW is hardly more competent than Palin, and yet 50% of the voters (more or less) thought he should lead. Twice. The time to be scared about such things began long ago.
- fant0m, on 12/31/2008, -9/+18that was kinda dramatic.
im just saying. - alexforcefive, on 12/31/2008, -5/+13But just for the record, liberalism is not what americans think it is. Liberal basically means "free from government intervention", i.e. small government i.e. what republicans stand for. There is also social liberalism, which is tolerance of different sexualities/lifestyles etc, which is mostly seen on the left wing.
There are also different branches or periods of (political or economic) liberalism, ranging from classical liberalism, through new liberalism, to NEO-liberalism which is what republicans from reagan onwards have called themselves. Et cetera. I could go on for days, but you guys might want to look it up.
Next time I hear someone complaining about the damn liberals with their universal healthcare and their social security, I am going to throw a giant hissy fit. - Jlaugh, on 12/31/2008, -0/+8@fugazied
They never stopped drinking Coca Cola, the company just spun it off as Fanta cola. Business is business after all. - wunksta, on 12/31/2008, -1/+9http://www.csmonitor.com/specials/neocon/neocon101 ...
- gernblansted, on 12/31/2008, -5/+13Except that Neocons have almost nothing in common with modern Liberals. I'd like to see war mongering profiteering constitution disrespecting Necons get anywhere with Liberals of today. I can just see them waving their fists calling for more war at a peace rally, or calling for regulating organized labor to maximize corporate profits at a union meeting.
- ltethe, on 01/01/2009, -1/+9Dugg for an insightful article with strong historical perspective. It's as insightful and interesting as the comments here are not.
