- Wreckage, on 06/02/2009, -24/+141Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms should be the name of a store, not a government agency.
- enevitable, on 06/02/2009, -21/+107I used to be semi-anti gun, but that was primarily because I just didn't know the facts. Turns out that as handgun supply goes up, property crimes go down. Also my favorite one:
71% of gunshot victims had previous arrest records.
64% had been convicted of a crime.
Each had an average of 11 prior arrests.
63% of victims have criminal histories and 73% of the time they know their assailant (twice as often as victims without criminal histories)
So it turns out that guns primarily kill criminals, and increasing the supply of them deters crime. I could go on with hundreds of statistics like that, but its much easier for you guys to read them all here: http://www.gunfacts.info/.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngsKzdKNAmo - rightwingkiller, on 06/01/2009, -17/+82I can attest to the truth in this article.
I teach a basic handgun safety class in MA and the wait time to get into a class and the increased size of classes is amazing. The people taking these classes, required for first time handgun owners applying for their license, are people who never thought of owning a gun a year ago.
A simple poll shows many to have voted for Obama and most today are women.
Most are genuinely surprised at how hard it is to get a license to own a gun of any type. I like that because they are learning to question the lies told by the media. - yerdaddy, on 06/02/2009, -13/+65USA doesn't have any problems with guns until politicians start talking about guns.
- smacksaw, on 06/01/2009, -13/+48As Hon. Justice Potter Stewart once said about defining what pornography is "I'll know it when I see it", the same goes for common-sense legislation for any issue - guns included. Such as guns in bars. There's not a lot of examples in life I can think of where being totally absolute on something isn't scarily crazy.
You read the article and see people taking the leadership position in the gun community and NRA to control themselves. Now the same NRA supporters are backing the exact opposite behaviour, guns in bars? And I'll tell you why - people are incapable of regulating themselves these days. They want everything.
I don't know if the anti-gun people started it or the NRA started it, but when you have two polar opposites preaching "no guns, ever" and "I can do whatever I want with my gun, period", the people that lose are regular folk in the middle. There's no common-sense if you're absolutely for or against something. That's a lack of common-sense. That's dogmatic, like religion. Owning a gun is not a religion, nor is trying to get rid of them. People who don't like guns should urge those who possess them to get back to common-sense self-regulation as opposed to the frothing bloggers of examiner.com who are Sean Hannity-esque FUD preachers of the worst kind.
We're not going to be getting compromise laws from two sides who are incapable of compromise. We're getting outright bans like in IL/Chicago that are asinine. - OttoGaines, on 06/02/2009, -4/+37apparently there is a zombie outbreak coming and people are stocking up
- TheInformer, on 06/02/2009, -27/+60A question:
When the citizens don't have guns any more and only the Imperial Federal Government does, do you think the Government is going to give up their guns?
I didn't think so. - therealweenis, on 06/02/2009, -1/+31I lost all my guns in a tragic boating accident.
- stix213, on 06/02/2009, -2/+26You forgot his support for an ammo tax... where if he can't stop you from owning the gun in the first place, then he can keep you from shooting it.
- Rell812, on 06/02/2009, -8/+32The ammo shortages are artificial, because all the good ole boys think Obama is going to ban guns, so they go out and buy bullets and primers by the boxfull. Just ask anyone who is into hand-loading if they can get a hold of a box of primers...if they say yes chances are they have hundreds of dollars worth sitting around in their garage to fight off the impending government crackdown.
- rizzo2008, on 06/02/2009, -6/+30Obama
Do you support state legislation to:
a. ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns? Yes.
b. ban assault weapons? Yes.
c. mandatory waiting periods and background checks? Yes. - dkitch, on 06/02/2009, -5/+23Moderate-Lefty here, probably going to purchase a gun within the next year or so. My reasons: 1) target practice = stress relief; 2) personal protection; 3) the upcoming zombie wars
- stix213, on 06/02/2009, -0/+18Turn off your aim bot
- jjesusfreak01, on 06/02/2009, -8/+26Statistically, people with concealed carry permits are the least likely of any category of gun owners to ever commit a crime using the firearm. Also, its very likely most of the crime committed in bars with guns is by people concealing them without a permit.
- montany, on 06/02/2009, -1/+18"Reports" of ammo shortages? Christ have you even gone out to buy ammo lately? Good luck.
- scamper22, on 06/02/2009, -2/+18the best argument against gun control... is the same one people use against the war on drugs.
It's impossible to implement.
Let's put it this way. If Israel cannot stop the Palestinians from making home made rockets... what makes you think you can stop people from making guns?
Making a gun is not all that hard. You could get rid of all gun companies and some gang will just start making guns in metal workshops in the country just like gangs make cocaine. - Mike17102, on 06/02/2009, -2/+18I am glad I dont need a permit or a class to exercise my right to own a gun. We require a background check, thats it.
- stix213, on 06/02/2009, -0/+16And limiting everything to the point where you have to ask the gov if you can brush your teeth now sounds better right?
Just as ridiculous as your statement. - BlakeEM, on 06/02/2009, -3/+18@homercles337
You don't need to make them up because they are obvious. Why would someone with intention to commit a crime do it with a gun that is fully traceable and registered to their self.
Most people with these tend to be ex military/law enforcement and seeing as you need to pass at least a basic background check for concealed to carry it's less likely that these people would have committed past crimes. - diggydougie, on 06/02/2009, -1/+16Fear of losing your gun rights is the best way to sell guns.
- rizzo2008, on 06/02/2009, -1/+16Libertarian/classical conservatism...
Legalize both and keep them that way - pcpimpster, on 06/02/2009, -6/+20Fear... pays well.
- TonyLocNE, on 06/02/2009, -3/+17@Rell812 No.... that's not correct. You can still buy ammo during a gun ban, so why would you waste money now buying ammo and not more guns? Stix213 is actually right a ban is not the reason...
The reality of the situation is that Obama had campaigned on a 500% tax for all ammunition sales. This tax comes in the form of a pseudo-weapons ban, as a 500% tax increase on ammo sales will greatly reduce gun use and ownership. This tax increase would have a far greater chance of passing in Congress than the reauthorization to AWB of '94 would have.
So that is actually the reason we are currently facing ammunition shortages, and frankly, I wish people would stop with this panic buying because they're the ones driving prices through the roof as it is... I miss the days when I could buy a 1000 round case for $80. You know how much that same case is going for nowadays? $350-400+.
So, to all you arfcommer mag whores and ammo fort enthusiasts: QUIT ***** PANIC BUYING!!! - GaltShrugged, on 06/02/2009, -5/+19Every time I get a gun, it just automatically points at someone's head.
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -1/+14Why not just allow both? More freedoms > Less freedoms
- lamakui, on 06/02/2009, -5/+18you're a d-bag.
and not because of your comment, just the fact that you actually made your screen name "insightful".
tool. - rizzo2008, on 06/02/2009, -11/+23those are ordinance not arms
nice try - stix213, on 06/02/2009, -6/+18Hard left: Restricting the lawful ownership of guns will also mean criminals will follow that law too, and not take advantage that breaking that law means they are the only ones with the guns now.

- DarkShroud, on 06/02/2009, -0/+12A coffee can of home made Thermite can easily take that tank out.
- cawpin, on 06/02/2009, -0/+11"No one is arguing against common sense regulations for handguns or rifles."
*****, I am. The reason is that "common sense" to the gun grabbers is me having to register and have a license to own a firearm. When I have to register to use my 1st Amendment right, I'll register to use the 2nd. - alamedaman, on 06/02/2009, -33/+44COLD DEAD HANDS
- cawpin, on 06/02/2009, -2/+12"More gun violence = more reason to own guns. "
That's funny because gun crimes have been falling for the last 20 years. In the same time, gun ownership and concealed carry have gone up. - rgersmrk, on 06/02/2009, -22/+32I get a good laugh at all these paranoid folks buying guns now. They should have been buying guns when the Department of Homeland Security was formed or when we saw our govt fail the people in New Orleans during Katrina under the Bush Administration.
It's just silly nonsense now. - vanguardanon, on 06/02/2009, -0/+10Exactly but I'm about 3 years ahead of you. If you follow my path, you'll get a scoped rifle too because shooting them is at least as much fun as shooting the pistol.
On topic, I'm glad gun ownership is on the rise because now the democrats don't want to harm gun owners. America would be better if the political parties would stay away from issues America doesn't back them on. If the dems can stop banning guns, maybe the republicans will stop gay bashing next. - Mike17102, on 06/02/2009, -2/+12Bush was never anti-gun, Obama is.
- sturmgiest, on 06/02/2009, -2/+12extra steps mean nothing, the people that shouldnt have the guns will go to their nearest drug dealer, the people that should have to deal with extra *****.
you must be from california - bipolarruledout, on 06/02/2009, -7/+17You can have your guns when I can have my drugs....which ironically would reduce the need for guns.

- Mship, on 06/02/2009, -4/+14That is the one thing I love about the whole "we have to have guns to stop the government". I think people forget that the people in the military are not imperial storm troopers, they are american citizens with families and loved ones. I highly doubt that most of the people in the military would shoot citizens in this country just because they got an order from whoever.
- MrFunStuff, on 06/02/2009, -0/+10@MshipMship
Banning guns is unconstitutional even in state law. - scamper22, on 06/02/2009, -5/+15Right:
pro-gun: people can be responsible, guns don't kill people; people kill people
anti-drug: people cannot be responsible for their own behavior, drugs ruin people's lives
left:
anti-gun: guns kill people, people cannot be responsible with them. We can win the war on guns by banning them
pro-drug: people can use drugs and can get treatment. The war is drugs cannot be won by banning them - akchrs, on 06/02/2009, -2/+12"I can attest to the truth in this article."
So can I. Since Obama's inauguration I bought an XD-45, XD-40M, and a Rugar 10-22. - nikov, on 06/02/2009, -1/+10Reminds me of the shirt that read "Alcohol, tobacco, and firearms...who's bringing the chips?"
- poesprogeny, on 06/02/2009, -1/+10I am a very pro-gun person, and I am a true originalist when it comes to the Constitution (capital C), however, I see the logic and the benefits of compromise. But, compromise requires both sides to give up something. Except for the wave of states instituting CCW laws the last 15 years or so, the history of "compromise" in the gun issue has been ban after ban after ban. The 1934 Firearms Act, Tighter restrictions in 68, Import bans during the first Bush, and then an all out ban on whatever they could in 1994--and that's just the Federal Govt. Look at states or cities where you can't even own a handgun, or you have to keep it locked and unloaded while the burglar's entering your house.
My idea of compromise? You don't want me to have a machine gun, OK, then let me have a CCW permit for my handgun that's good through the entire country. You don't want civilians to have suppressors? All right, let adults in college and teachers and principles in schools who have been trained and possess a CCW permit to carry on school grounds. To me, those are compromises. Until now, it's just been take, take, take from with anti's.
What amazes me most is that groups that advocate for minorities and the economically impoverished are absolutely against Voter Identification because it would cost too much, or it would impose a hardship to go through the steps of getting the form filled out and approved. Yet, those same groups of people are disenfranchised in the same manner when it comes to states and cities that require exorbitant fees, permits, ID's and renewals of those documents every 3-5 years. So, based on the logic with voting ID's, the poor are disproportionately affected the same way when it comes to owning and carrying firearms in a legal fashion.
Why aren't their rights being protected when this particular issue is one the table? - trogdor1289, on 06/02/2009, -5/+14I happen to know you're right but this is Digg. People want sources here especially if you aren't following the leftist line.
- ell0bo, on 06/02/2009, -0/+9Where I grew up i always had access to guns... we used to go out shooting most after noons with friends, I got my first bolt action at the age of 12. However, I was taught to respect my rifle, and when I accidentally turned, pointing it at my step father, I got a back hand that made me remember from then on never to point a gun at someone.
