- jackelsmack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5So let me get this straight, everyone recognizes that the planet is warming faster than ever before and we are are facing a catastrophe... the denialist argument is now what exactly? That it's an incredible coincidence? That we just happened to industrialize every country on the planet during the same period? That we should avoid taking action because we're screwed either way?
Here's my question to them: Can you imagine ANY evidence that could convince you that human activity affects the planet? If not then you're operating on blind faith in the benevolence of pollution. If your convictions don't require evidence and you've simply chosen what to believe, what is it that convinced you to choose the pollution-doesn't-affect-the-planet belief? Why not take it on faith that releasing 6 billion metric tons of carbon gas each year is having a negative effect instead?
Those questions are rhetorical of course. The source of their faith is the belief that human civilization is god-like; especially Western, industrialized, Americanized civilization. A god-like civilization couldn't possibly be producing planetary toxins that endanger our future. Thus, pollution is not harmful. - marxfriedrice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Baby's on fire. Better throw her in the water.
- neave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The argument in this video was whether an increase in CO2 drives an increase in temperature (as is argued by most scientists) or whether the increase in CO2 lags behind an increase in temperature (meaning temperature increases naturally and CO2 is a by-product, and humans aren't to blame).
The fact is more CO2 does mean higher temperatures, but not because of CO2 (and other greenhouse gases) alone. More CO2 means swings in temperature are much more likely. It lags behind temperature increase because it acts as a catalyst, stirring up more warming once it has already started. The climate is on a warm swing just as we pump billions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, adding momentum to the swing in temperature increase, amplifying and accelerating the increase in temperature. That's why there's a lag.
That's a simplified explanation, there's a more detailed explanation here: http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2004/12/co2-in-ice-cores/ - pegagus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0There is no evidence that levels of C02 affect the warming of the planet, the fact is that it changes constantly throughout the planets lifecycle. But humoring the gullable and the sheep out there that believe what ever the government tells them, the following will explain the major contributors of C02.
As said above the oceans are the greatest contributor, due to the trillions of algae/ plankton that produce 15 times of what all the human produce. Next is the decaying matter and dead animals that produce almost the same as the oceans. So thats 30 times more than what we produce.
The next is trees, many believe that trees suck up C02 and prodcue oxygen for life, but this is WRONG, growing trees do do this but mature trees actually stop this and produce more C02 than oxygen. Maybe we should cut down all mature trees to save the planet.
Next animals which includes us humans just releasing greenhouse gases produce way more than all the factories cars etc.
Also volcanoes, it is estimated that 1 eruption from a large volcane releases what we produce in 6 months. Of course there are other things that produce C02. So humans maybe produce about a hundreth of the planets C02 do you still think by turning your TV to standby or using energy saving lightbulbs makes any difference?
The fact is the theory of Global warming due to C02 outputs from humans is just a political policy that is used to TAX people, they employ their own scientists to give credit to there arguments, and select the only ones that agree with them to show to the public.
When will the world stop believing exactly what is told to them, without any evidence and make up their own minds. The government lies that is fact! - Mekun, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4The ocean is the biggest maker of c02, humans are a single digit percent of c02 makers. c02 follows warming trends not proceeds it, as the oceans warm the oceans produce more c02. Al Gore says c02 is warming the oceans which is backwards. Why find real facts when you can make up your own to fit your enviro religon.
