- xexx, on 07/13/2009, -22/+61Yes, a few higher taxes please, as long as it's spent on America and not Iraq.
- RonPauls, on 07/12/2009, -10/+41It was startling a long time before government owned the autos...
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -27/+56Somehow how the Europeans have a VAT, and I seem to recall they're doing alright, with a higher satisfaction index than the U.S.
Bury me, you know it's true though! :-) - pin0chet, on 07/13/2009, -5/+27or we could do neither and simply SPEND LESS
- pin0chet, on 07/13/2009, -6/+27According to the Congressional Budget Office, President Obama's proposed budget will increase the national debt by $9.3 TRILLION over the next decade: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29791927/
According to CBS News, President Bush increased the national debt by $4.1 TRILLION during his 8 years in office.
http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2008/09/29/couricandc ... - Barackalypse, on 07/13/2009, -20/+40Every President and Congress in my lifetime has run deficits. Bush was the worst, until Obama.
- Striker101, on 07/12/2009, -33/+51"A VAT is levied at every stage of production. Like the cap-and-trade carbon regime now being constructed, a VAT is a liberal politician's delight: It taxes everything, but opaquely.
Before he became an economic adviser in the Obama White House, where wit can be dangerous, Larry Summers said: Liberals oppose a VAT because it is regressive and conservatives oppose it because it is a money machine, but a VAT might come when liberals realize it is a money machine and conservatives realize it is regressive."
Obamanomics has come to desperation to pay for the collectivism onboard and ahead. Refusing to pay a VAT could be trickier than just not filing income taxes. Such taxes get attached to goods which people must buy to survive; e.g. it's difficult to escape the store without paying sales taxes. The Rulers have made businesses their unpaid tax collectors for many years now. The hole just keeps getting deeper. We must stop paying them if we want to make them disappear. - Hobobob, on 07/13/2009, -1/+15Technically Cap and Trade is a tax. It is not an example of direct taxation and it hasn't passed the senate yet but it is a tax.
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -9/+22Wrong.
Deficit spending is deficit spending. You don't recover from deficit spending by doing more of it. - inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+13Let me be a voice of reason here. LESS SPENDING!
- realeskimopimp, on 07/13/2009, -10/+22The top richest top 5% of the US have over half the nation's wealth.
Yes, more taxes. The middle class is shrinking. - onlysoma, on 07/13/2009, -10/+22Why did economic policy go bad after domestic auto companies were bought and not after a $4000/second war was waged for 6 years or so?
Also, how come no one ever mentions raising the corporate tax rate to match the personal tax rate or least bridge the gap a bit? - ehaugan, on 07/13/2009, -10/+22I've never been hired by a poor person...
- ZenMojo, on 07/13/2009, -3/+15Ever occur to you that the really rich Americans throw off the curve without having any added satisfaction value for their money?
Just saying. - ZenMojo, on 07/13/2009, -5/+16Did he just namedrop India? Has he SEEN India?
- llopez1223, on 07/13/2009, -17/+28I'm not always a big fan of George Will, but he wrote a great article.
- realeskimopimp, on 07/13/2009, -16/+26Higher taxes? How about higher bankruptcy if we do not fix the fundamental problems in our economy.
2001 - 51% of all Bankruptcies caused in part by Medical bills.
2008 - 62% of all Bankruptcies caused in part by Medical bills.

http://www.law.harvard.edu/news/2005/02/03_bankrup ... - SouthsideIrish, on 07/13/2009, -1/+11So, the only tax you pay is income tax? Yeah, right. What about other taxes like the tobacco tax, gas tax, and all of the other taxes. I would think that you are the one who is the idiot.
- pin0chet, on 07/13/2009, -7/+17Where do you think that money would go if it wasn't taxed by the government? For the most part, it would be invested by private risk-taking citizens and firms in the American economy. Instead, that money will be spent by politicians whose incentive is to pander to the populace, not create wealth and innovation.
- pin0chet, on 07/13/2009, -14/+24Europeans may have higher satisfaction on average than Americans, but they're poorer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_ ...
Only one major European nation has higher average per capita purchasing power than the U.S., , Norway, and it's not even a member of the European Union. - BearKill, on 07/13/2009, -5/+15LOL...you are not only stupid, but walking blind without a cane. The horrendous spending of Obama will result in massive taxes on everybody. Stop watching Oprah and Ellen and start paying attention to the real news.
- RonPauls, on 07/13/2009, -3/+13....because of big government policies which hinder social mobility
- ftc08, on 07/13/2009, -21/+30Despite what Obama is doing, most of this is still on Bush. If it wasn't for his catastrophic failure we wouldn't have to be doing all of this 'recovery' stuff.
When you're cleaning your house you have to deal with the fact that it always gets worse before it gets better. There will be more of a mess in transition than when it cleans up. Same policy applies here. We're going to see more chaos before it cleans up.
In the mean time, it'll take higher taxes. More government spending (to fix the broken system), and things that people won't always agree with. - pin0chet, on 07/13/2009, -0/+9in most states, property that isn't fixed to land, such as jewelry, electronics, boats, and cars is not subject to taxation except at the point of sale.
- lilamae, on 07/13/2009, -2/+10Corporations don't pay taxes. If the corporate tax rate is increased, that is passed along to the consumer, too. Guess who will be the consumer? Right. You. If you can no longer afford to consume because of the rise in the cororate tax rate, the corporation will go out of business and the jobs will be lost. Tax revenues will decrease and the tax rates will be raised. So don't worry. Someone will feel the pain. You. No job. No income. No money. But, hey, maybe the government will feed you--if you vote the right way.
- thecoolestguy, on 07/13/2009, -4/+12So how is taxing people to pay the medical costs going to reduce the expenses people have?
Taxation/government-spending is just shifting around money. It doesn't make people wealthier or better-off. - RonPauls, on 07/13/2009, -3/+11the court economists like krugman are the biggest hacks
instructors of the science of human action, the austrian economists, have always been opposed by the big government and big corporate interests - durruticolumn, on 09/18/2009, -2/+10
Germany? Unless they want advanced stem cell procedures. Then they go to the China. - Unreal030, on 07/13/2009, -0/+7"Who gives a ***** if 9% is hurting?"
Because a lot of those 9% are part of the percent that gives you a ***** job so your not in the lowest tax bracket. America isn't special, after a certain point they will simply leave and go somewhere else. Hence all the off shoring and outsourcing you moochers are always complaining about. I am sure things will be better off alright, everyone will be covered in the healthcare department but the economy will be even *****. - topgigmedia, on 07/13/2009, -6/+13Yeah but at least if they get sick they are covered.
- jayjayjoni, on 07/13/2009, -14/+21I'd rather everyone be poorer but healthier and happier :)
- Arsenard, on 07/12/2009, -31/+38True words!!
- drmangrum, on 07/13/2009, -1/+8It gets really irritating when someone comes and gives legitimate criticism and people like you label them a "partisan hack," but when an author publishes something makes Obamas ***** smell like roses you eat it up.
Sorry, YOU'RE the partisan hack. - radu79, on 07/13/2009, -3/+10At least McCain admited not understanding it, but Obama thinks he does, and look at the mess he got us in.
- alamedaman, on 07/13/2009, -0/+7death and taxes
- bacon_skoda, on 07/13/2009, -6/+13McCain said he does not understand economics.
Shall I Let you run NASA? - Barackalypse, on 07/13/2009, -5/+12Bush isn't my messiah, I voted against him three times (the two times he was running and then when Obama ran with the same ideas).
- thecoolestguy, on 07/13/2009, -7/+14And then there will be fewer rich people. The higher the tax on something, the less incentive there is to do it. The more you tax wealth, the less there will be.
- topgigmedia, on 07/13/2009, -1/+7Guess you aren't a home owner. My assessed value by the county is 50K higher than the market value.
- RonPauls, on 07/13/2009, -3/+9government spending = government taxes (either direct or federal reserve borrowing)
That means everything that government spends it gains through taxation of some form, because government doesn't have money of its own.
Hence, taxes increased massively during Bush admin.
If big government worked, we would be doing just fine right now. - shiftkgb, on 07/13/2009, -0/+6Yeah ***** those 30 million people, right?
- IDuggg, on 07/13/2009, -13/+19Increasing taxes on households making more than 250k will only increases taxes on 3% of the population.... And the tax increase is only on the money above 250k, this article is full of *****.
- Sharky35, on 07/13/2009, -3/+9From my POV... you ARE rich.
- durruticolumn, on 09/18/2009, -0/+6
You must be joking.
"High-speed rail in the United States currently consists of one so-called "high-speed" rail line, Amtrak's Acela Express service, which runs the Northeast Corridor"
"In contrast to Shanghai's Maglev airport train which averages 156 mph over a 30 km track or the even faster French TGV which routinely averages speeds of 173 mph, Amtrak's Acela Express averages a speed of 63 mph between Boston and New York City, and a brisker 79 mph between New York City and Washington, D.C." - ZenMojo, on 07/13/2009, -2/+8But that's also anti-American.
- Barackalypse, on 07/13/2009, -13/+19This is why I have been converting my financial instruments into physical goods for the last 6 months. Good luck taxing physical items I already own.
- osok, on 07/13/2009, -1/+7Canada has long worried about being taken over by the USA, but i see now, USA is the new Canada.. enjoy being taxed to death.. aint socialism great!
- Dustin00, on 07/13/2009, -15/+21Ooooh.. ahhhh... more economic policy from a political hack.
I'm sticking with the scientists, not the ideologues. - ryrocker, on 07/13/2009, -0/+6what would be constructive would be to the lessen government's spending and reduce its influence...
that cost no money -
