  • Siegfriedson, on 05/18/2008, -0/+2It has only been a very recent phenomenon in the development of America that to be "American" means that you are not necessarily white. "American" nowadays means you are an "American citizen", which means the Federal government recognizes you as an "official" inhabitant of the territory that it controls. It has not ethnic overtones. It used to be, however, that to be "American" meant you were a descendant of one of more European nations and that you had assimilated into American culture and accepted American values. The invasion of Third World immigrants has destroyed America's identity.
