I do hope he lives to be 100, though, so that he can have plenty of time to see how future historians assess what he's done.

- StaticThunder, on 01/08/2009, -5/+20Disclaimer: I agree with most of your post, but it still doesn't diminish how HORRIBLE a President Bush has been.
But our very vocal enemies bombed military targets in foreign waters or on foreign soils? Nobody could have seen THAT coming. The Cole bombing (not Kohl) was an embarassment for the military, yes - that a couple guys in a rubber dinghy were able to do substantial damage to one of our finest war ships.
Now how about ignoring repeated national security warnings about a hijacking plot that would ultimately be successfully carried out on our own soil, using our own planes, and we couldn't even get the best fighter jets in the world over our national assets in Washington DC in time to stop them because somebody thought we were running a training exercise and somebody else was too busy reading 'The Pet Goat'. - chronically420, on 01/09/2009, -9/+23let me guess. you get your information from pundits over exaggerating republican talking points...
- Bowie, on 01/09/2009, -8/+22Republicans: DERRR, HE KEPT US SAFE FROM TERR! WE HAVN'T BEEN 'TACKED SINCE 9-1-1!
Everyone Else: ....Yeah, he kept our country safe.. With the exception of that whole 9/11 thing, that happened on his watch... And was warned about...repeatedly..
Republicans: ..... (*blink*).... YER A TERRIST!!! - homercles337, on 01/09/2009, -0/+13Man, someone at the onion had a damn time machine to write that thing!
- pintomp3, on 01/09/2009, -5/+18In 20 years Bush will be held up as a hero after the Republicans rewrite history like they did with Reagan.
- rhodydog, on 01/09/2009, -2/+15And the Roman Empire fell because?
Wait for it......utterly incompetent leadership, overstretch in unnecessary wars and totally wasteful adventures (think British Empire too), misspent investments (or lack of in things that actually matter), coupled with the rich and upper classes thinking more about themselves than the empire (or country in our case). Ring any bells? - spookyttws, on 01/09/2009, -3/+15So much for the argument that Republicans are the "fiscally conservative" party.
- StaticThunder, on 01/08/2009, -3/+15It doesn't matter if we knew they were planning for 50 years in advance. Bush had the memo, on his desk, every month leading up to the attacks "terrorists planning domestic hijackings this Fall" and "possible use of domestic airplanes as weapons" and he did nothing about it. If Clinton had the same memo, and he did nothing on his term, that still doesn't excuse Bush for being completely asleep and taken by surprise when, what the CIA had been saying all along, finally happened.
It may not be fair, but he has the misfortune of being the one at ground zero, so to speak, when it happened. We hardly reward Clinton for all the virtual terrorist attacks he may have prevented, how can we penalize him when for all we know, had he been in office in 2001 (in Bizarro world), he would have dismantled the al-qaida cell that was planning the attacks. I have no way of knowing whether Clinton might have stopped it, what I know is that Bush had the opportunity and didn't.
We have no idea what WOULD have happened, what we know is that Bush did nothing. - Rixar13, on 01/09/2009, -5/+17George W. Bush Jr. is the worst President in US History and no Karl Rove spin will ever change that fact. What a Disaster....
- Frou, on 01/09/2009, -4/+15He has control over an entire administration that has sound policies in all areas. He also has the support of his people, and hopefully therefore congress. Will he be the messiah? Probably not. Will we be in a better place in 4 years? Yes, we will be.
- uncleosbert, on 01/08/2009, -2/+12@ moonkeeper
there is no reason to assume that anything could have been done under bush or clinton. however, the fact that 9-11 happened on bush's watch is pretty significant. i don't know how he can claim that they have kept us safe when that single fact speaks volumes. if it really takes ten years to plan these things out, then we have a very compelling reason to believe that bush has not materially increased our security at all.
at the same time, he has been eviscerating the constitution's separation of powers with this strong executive garbage. i think that's the biggest sin of this administration... they not only failed to protect us, they lied about their ability to protect us and tried to silence those who would say otherwise.
http://www.amconmag.com/article/2008/jan/28/00012/ - inactive, on 01/09/2009, -6/+16No, no...I would have to say you are, indeed, a douchebag.
- BossKey, on 01/09/2009, -5/+15By god, you're right. It's unfair to blame the situation on the incoming president since the economy and political situation were already imploding by the time of the election. I'm with you: It won't be fair to blame today's economic and political ills on Obama, when it is primarily the fault of the previous administration...
- Moonkeeper, on 01/08/2009, -13/+22Bush inherited peace and prosperity? What about the USS Kohl and the bombing of the embassies? What about the stock market dropping 30% BEFORE he took office? What about Greenspan's rate cut (based on economic news) prior to Bush taking office? Finally, since when is debt-based expansion considered prosperity?
Disclaimer: I preferred President Clinton over President Bush - Bowie, on 01/09/2009, -3/+11If the shoe fits, throw it.
Been thinking about starting a Facebook group, where i'll give anybody $500 per shoe thrown at Bush between now and when he leaves. - rhodydog, on 01/09/2009, -2/+10Bush was and is an imbecile how ever you look at it, and anyone who still supports him is cut from the same cloth.
- algaeturd, on 01/09/2009, -1/+9I'm so embarrassed to be American after these past 8 years. I know none of it is my fault, but to be a part of a nation who REALLY thought Bush would work for America...it's disgusting.
And still, some of them prance around as if nothing is wrong and they're not at least partly to blame.
I think the saddest part is that republicans don't see that this country is practically destroyed compared to how it was back in the Clinton years even.
They walk around saying, 'what? you think there's something wrong with America?"
I do. And the rest of the world does. We're disgusting. We can't even take care of the health of our fellow citizens when they need it. Tip of the iceberg. The number of problems wrong with this country runs deep and to every corner of the nation.
Yes, the economy is bad but in line with the rest of the ***** that's fallen, it all blends together into one giant toilet constructed and architected by Bush & Co. and those dumb enough to put them into power.
***** disgusting. - haydesigner, on 01/09/2009, -3/+10@skotski: "Oh yeah, I'm sure the whole world will change then..."

- freebird09, on 01/09/2009, -1/+8For the love of whatever you may worship, the guy HASN'T TAKEN OFFICE! There is no basis, for attacking the policies he is stating in an effort to place blame for our current problems or to divert attention away from the last EIGHT YEARS. I hear so much ***** from the right about how Obama's policies will worsen a bad situation yet they conveniently leave out why we are in this situation in the first place.
Yes, I agree this is a fairly biased article, but it provides indisputable numbers nonetheless. However, I'd be open to a similar counterargument but you were too busy, like most right wingers (I know there are a lot of intelligent conservatives but you would never guess from the media [same with liberals too]) tossing insults and accusations in an attempt to divert attention away from GW.
/an independent - dsmx, on 01/09/2009, -0/+6Not really someone at the onion new that bush was an idiot and whenever an idiot gets in charge very often the worse possible things that can happen, happen.
- pintomp3, on 01/09/2009, -2/+8Reagan increased the national debt more than any president until W, same goes for number of vacation days taken. Reagan supported segregation in the US and apartheid in South Africa. He sold weapons to terrorists in order to fund death squads in Central America. He escalated the war on drugs which led to the US having the highest percentage of it's citizens incarcerated. He lead a war on the poor. He took partisanship to new heights with his commandment "Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican". Perhaps you have forgotten all this.

Not so great, really. - rivasj, on 01/09/2009, -3/+8Under Bush...the rich got richer and the poor got the bill. I don't think this is going to change under any administration....EVER.
- theutopian, on 01/09/2009, -2/+7The goal was to make government inept and useless so they could justify dismantling 'big government' and outsourcing it to private contractors.
The only ones ineffective were the people put in place to run this country. When you put a bunch of idiotic, unqualified, ideologue political appointees in charge of the Federal Government, this is what happens.
Obama has already changed things by appointing QUALIFIED people to run the government departments. - ichbinladen, on 01/09/2009, -3/+7Great, can we send his family the bill after the damage is assessed?
- anarcurt, on 01/09/2009, -1/+5Well rumor is that Angelina Jolie will be Dagny Taggart in the movie version of Atlas Shrugged which is heading into production and should be done by 2011!
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0480239/ - anonymiau, on 01/09/2009, -2/+6***** hell: LOOK AT THE NUMBERS!
How hard can it ***** be if you know elementary math?
http://www.mypolls.us/republican.national.debt.jpg
HERE. I did all the work for you. This is a simple colorful graph from the Department of the Treasury that even you might understand. Look how the debt is getting alot smaller under Clinton. Now see how it's getting bigger under all republican presidents and really ***** gargantuan under W?
Bush had eight years to demand an increase in interest rates and say no new money. Instead, he's been spending your tax dollars like a madman, printing them up until they're worthless because he needs to finance two imperialistic wars based on lies because Israel demanded it.
And you obviously love to take it up the ass. - Sleeper4amoment, on 01/09/2009, -1/+5It is hard to understand how a compliation of stats as listed in the article does not point to the fact that it was his intention to run this Union into the ground. I think he accomplished much of his objectives.
He has weakened us in our ability to have any security. We have an embellished threat from those guys over there that hate our freedoms and a secret but very real threat from our shadow government attempting and being quite successful at ending the very freedoms that our manufactured enemy hates us for having.
This newer crop of politicians hear the call for change but it is the old guard that controls the process of our legislature. I would love to see some competition of philosophies for leadership positions. Let the public ring in to their Reps and inform them of the ethics and honor that has been lacking by some senior party members when it came to appling pressure for other members to get on board and pass both versions of "The Patriot Act" & "The Military Commissions Act". These Acts resemble Acts that were introduced in 1930's Germany that enabled Hitler to gain the position that lead to the rise of the Third Reight.
Any thourough accountability for the show that was put on over the last 8 years would sully a number of the power players in both parties. We must demand that a truly independent investigation starts in the period leading up to 9/11/2001 probably even prior to the campaign for the 2000 election. We must identify the Treason and hold all players accountable. - Bowie, on 01/09/2009, -1/+5That's assuming the leader has respect to begin with... which Bush doesn't. He's lost every shred of credibility in his own country and abroad.
Would you show Hitler/Stalin/Mussolini respect when they visited? Honestly? - Gndoab, on 01/09/2009, -3/+6But European cities have existed for thousands of years. They were built to be compact and accessible via foot and horse. American cities (with the exception of those built in the original colonies, New York, DC, Philly, Annapolis, etc) aren't built like that, and public transportation doesn't work well with them. What is the point of having a fantastic rail network if once you get to your destination you have to have a car to get around anyways?
It works well on the east coast, with the acela bullet train going between DC and Boston. It doesn't work well anywhere else in the country. (it's even profitable on the east coast!) - kuzotz, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3lets be realistic. Almost every American city had some form of public transportation that included rail lines. When a few companies bought them up they tore them out, and designed the cities around the automobile.
This was the dumbest move ever done, and we continue to be the only developed nation that is behind on technology.
Hell Argentina is building a highspeed rail line.
We don't have a high speed rail line, and Amtrak is becoming less and less reliable, hell even certain stations are shutting down. - CaptainHampt0n, on 01/09/2009, -4/+7No doubt Bush was not a good president, but idk what kind of imaginary United States Salon is talking about that was full of "Peace and Prosperity" prior to Bush.
- draculthemad, on 01/09/2009, -2/+5Comparatively, it was.
No war involving 90% of our armed forces being committed on foreign soil.
No Mortgage/Financial/Everythingincludingkitchensinkmakers crisis.
Bush has failed across the board. They used to point at the economy as their saving grace, but the crap started to leak out from under the carpet before they could run out on it. - AriaStar, on 01/09/2009, -3/+6***** BUSH!
- mrukz, on 01/09/2009, -3/+6The article mentions the number of US military deaths but I wish it also mentioned the number of civilian deaths in Iraq and Afganistan. We will have to pay for these too, whether we like it or not. But I guess the attitude of the writer is that of many other Americans: "It is not our responsibility when brown man dies." Sorry if I offend anyone but it just bothers me how everybody in US happily omits Iraqis and Afganis in the death count.
- Atario, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3It's one thing if you spend the money on things that will benefit us. That would be an investment. Instead, he threw it all down the rathole of screwing with Iraq.
