Fox: ‘There’s Just as many Convoy Attacks in U.S. as Iraq"
thinkprogress.org — Fox News host Brian Kilmeade presented his sunshine-filled vision of Iraq, declaring that “the Green Zone could come down in 6 months” and praising a new hotel to be built in Baghdad. His view was so optimistic he declared that there were “just as many convoy attacks” in the streets of America as there are now in Iraq

It's sad when rightards claim the source is bad because the facts don't match their fantasies.
- AeonTorpor, on 07/23/2008, -1/+17Good god, this is unreal. there's something like 4000 us troops dead and the stats are like 25 Iraqi to US soldiers killed.
100,000 + Iraqis dead.
Our government used the sentiments of 3000-ish dead in 2001 to drum up this BS to kill 100,000 + people in a completely unrelated country and 4000 of ours just to do it.
How are they (the lot of them) not tried for crimes against humanity?!- gsnedders, on 07/23/2008, -0/+5Look at how France got treated when speaking against the Iraqi war before it happened. Americans don't seem to be able to take anything apart from being told their perfect.

An African.
A barrel of oil.
To the reason why they are not arrested and tried for crimes against humanity, GWB removed the US from the UN Treaty on Human Rights.
Just to be sure he then passed legislation which meant should a US citizen be arrested under the treaty the US armed forces must rescue them.
Seems to be a great get out of jail free card. - jabberwolf, on 07/23/2008, -4/+3Yeah because the USA should be tried for Iraqis killing each other.

- PhilLesh69, on 07/23/2008, -0/+39Just the other day, I was going to starbucks to get a cup of coffee, so I obviously saddled up my entire crew of 5 humvees, with 5 guys in each vehicle, we did our comms check, did our weapons check, locked and loaded, and left our suburban compound on our coffee acquisition mission.
Wouldn't you know it, halfway to starbucks, in front of the Whole Foods Store, we were ambushed by a faction of the organic party, and they tore up our convoy.
Luckily, we had great fire discipline, and we all sped through the ambush and there were no casualties.
We also successfully completed Operation Latte, and returned to our suburban home without further resistance from the insurgents. We aren't sure how many civilians were killed, but all I care about is that we got back alive, and enjoyed our lattes in the comfort of our McMansions.
I'm a little worried about tomorrow's mission. We have to go buy some stuff at Crate and Barrel. Everyone knows that part of town is filled with furniture and nick-nack zealots. Luckily we just got in a whole fleet of up-armored humvees.- bizkit00, on 07/23/2008, -0/+20wow, you use satire against the suburbanization of american society while using ironic parody against false news. i dont think people know what to make of it. i'll give you a green thumb.

- dave11980, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4The GOP hasn't adopted any of the religious rights views. They have manipulated the religious right with fear to gain their votes yet do little to actually support their views. They do just enough to get the votes and not a thing further. - anasek, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4Not a well worded analogy by Mr.Kilmeade. Good news is that US deaths in Iraq are at their lowest point ever in the war, 9 deaths this month. There are double that in Afghanistan, 18.

- NorthMass, on 07/23/2008, -6/+10FOX news is horrible, but how come people act like its only FOX that is corrupt? How come CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC all get a pass but FOX doesn't? They all are corrupt, FOX is just more blatantly obvious and arrogant about it.
- PhilLesh69, on 07/23/2008, -0/+8Because we all know that all media outlets are biased and owned by 6 major corporations.
The problem is that people who watch Fox News actually buy into their propoganda. They've had the "fair and balanced" line pounded into their heads, so they actually believe that the rest of us are just not informed, or want to destroy america because we refuse to believe all of this *****.
The bottom line is that the people who watch Fox News are seeking justification for their support of the neocons. People who watch the other news outlets at least understand that it is all just propoganda.- NorthMass, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3The people who watch MSNBC, CNN, and other stations don't understand it is all just propoganda. This is evidenced by the lack of votes for 3rd party candidates. FOX just has more viewers than the other stations and is more arrogant and obvious in its bias so people seemingly give the other stations a free pass.
- PhilLesh69, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3NorthMass, I liked Ron Paul for his positions, too.
But, what 3rd party do you think will win until a majority of people stop buying into the two party system?
You are putting your cart before your horse.
Until the two party system is fully and completely exposed, you cannot expect to be effective in voting for a third party. - NorthMass, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1PhilLesh69, thank you for giving Ron Paul admiration. Ron Paul is everything that is right with America. Now with the 3rd parties, right now the Libertarians have a good chance of winning it all this year. But they are just as likely to get 8% of the vote as winning it, let me explain my reasoning. If Bob Barr can get into the debates this year he can win, he is at 6% right now nationally and needs to get to 10% by September to get into the Youtube debate. He has a real chance of approaching 10% by then. If he can get into that debate he would make Obama/Mccain look stupid and his numbers would soar overnight just like Perot in 1992 when he took the lead after the first debate. If Barr fails to get into the debate, he can still pull a solid 7-10% of the vote which is still a huge milestone for the Libertarians. Overall we need people to stop voting for the lesser of two evils. I am sure that millions of people know of Nader or Barr for example and want to vote for him but won't because he "can't win". But they could win if people stopped voting for the lesser of two evils, which is still evil. And even if Barr doesn't get into the debates this year and it is clear he has no better than a one in a million shot to become president, I will still vote for him because he is by far the best candidate in my opinion and I would be throwing my vote away voting for Obama/Mccain who I think are terrible candidates. Nader would be my second choice. Lets say if Barr gets 9% the media and politicians will realize people are waking up to new philosophies that they know work better than theirs, so they will have to clean up their act. More and more people will find 3rd parties to vote for as the economy collapses, and people will be demanding answers, and they will be realizing that the current Republicans and Democrats are pathetic and just won't care at this point of the lesser of two evils argument, they will be desperate for a new voice. The economy will collapse within a few years, we are $50 trillion in debt and most people don't realize it because the media doesn't tell people. People will get pissed when we collapse into a severe recession or a depression and then is when I think the 3rd parties start winning, unless Barr wins in 2008. If the economy collapse happens before the elections, I also think that would give Barr a chance to win it all.
- PhilLesh69, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1NorthMass,
It would be nice if your predictions turn out, but don't be overly optimistic.
The two parties are very well entrenched and have a massive amount of power. Not to mention that since they both operate within the corporate/government revolving door system, the media (being almost wholly owned by 6 very large corporations) will always leave out 3rd parties and will present the facade of the legitimacy of a two party system.
Too many people just believe whatever the media tells them, the average mainstream person doesn't have the intellectual curiosity or the motivation to investigate and learn about the world on their own terms, they simply consume whatever is fed to them. And it has gotten worse for many who stick to only the news sources they feel agree with their polarized political views.
These things need to change before the two party system can be exposed for what it is -- a duopoly. It's too bad nobody has ever attempted to apply the Sherman Anti-Trust Act to our political parties.
(there are even people who will argue that for the sake of stability, America should only ever have two parties, because of some nonsense about anarchy. Talk about being under the influence of an ideological belief system. Any citizen who cares about his own self interest and the best interests of his country should desire a more open political system, only corporations and special interests should desire a closed system.) - NorthMass, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2The thing is though, that I think the economy is about to totally collapse, and when that happens people will be desperately looking for answers. They will be demanding answers for once in their lives, and at that time I cannot see the BS go on anymore. If the politicians keep ***** up the economy after the economy collapses then I think people will take action for once by voting them out of office in droves, and the politicians know that. They are playing a dangerous game right now, for the last few decades people haven't realized that they have been getting screwed because their lives have been good, but they could of been so much better. Unless the politicians want to tear apart our economy so they can have a reason to bring on the N.A.U., I think they are heading for disaster. If they bring on this proposed N.A.U., then the American people will probably call them heroes for "fixing" the problem they created, while in the process destroying the United States of America.
- PhilLesh69, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1NorthMass, the last sentence of your comment is probably the most likely scenario.
We, as a "people" in the collective sense, have been conditioned to accept all kinds of things. One of those things we've been conditioned to accept is that whenever there is a crisis, we should rely on those that caused the crisis to fix things.
I'm not sure if our economy is going to collapse. I've been expecting it for over a year and a half, but so far it has managed to maintain weak vital signs instead of just giving up the ghost.
However, if it does collapse, you can be sure that the only solution that will be offered to us is the NAU and the eventual "global integration of financial, government and social systems".
Ever heard of "rope a dope"?
"Rope-a-dope is also commonly used to describe strategies in areas other than boxing, where one party purposely puts itself in what appears to be a losing position, and then becomes the eventual victor." - PhilLesh69, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1NorthMass,

I especially like his comment around 3:15, and especially at 3:57 about fingerprinting mortgage brokers.
The thing that scared me the most was at 4:30, where he mentions that the bill allows the IRS to track all credit card purchases.
See how they use a crisis to slip in some form of government control over the actions of the citizens?
Really. They are going to use the mortgage crisis to enact a law that even further monitors citizen's financial activities?
Why? Do they care if I buy a certain brand of hair gel, or a certain brand of soda, or if I buy vegetables or if I buy frozen dinners? What book might I buy that could piss them off?
None of that ***** is their business. A terrorist is not going to buy the book "If you hate the american government, this book is going to show you how to bring them down", and beside, all the credit card processing network really knows is the merchant you buy from, and the amount you charged through them. It doesn't actually itemize the purchase. I know, I used to process credit card charges using ICVerify. I knew what actual products were purchased, and my merchant account provider only knew the total amount of each processed transaction to deposit into my account.
This is a backdoor to track taxable income.
Yeah IRS!

" - rexblade, on 07/23/2008, -0/+4That and the whole thing has been a scam since it started. They would short supply shipments and then when the mistake was noticed on the invoices instead of sending what was left off they would write up a whole new invoice so basically we were double billed. And not to mention "no bid contracts" and stupid rules like only a halliburton piece of ***** trailer was allowed on bases for the bargain price of 10k. Rumsfeld supposedly made about 11million off that.

"Denial (also called abnegation) is a defense mechanism postulated by Sigmund Freud, in which a person is faced with a fact that is too uncomfortable to accept and rejects it instead, insisting that it is not true despite what may be overwhelming evidence. [1] The subject may deny the reality of the unpleasant fact altogether (simple denial), admit the fact but deny its seriousness (minimisation) or admit both the fact and seriousness but deny responsibility (transference). The concept of denial is particularly important to the study of addiction. The theory of denial was first researched seriously by Anna Freud. She classified denial as a mechanism of the immature mind, because it conflicts with the ability to learn from and cope with reality."

- rz8472, on 07/23/2008, -2/+9Actually I have watched CCTV (Chinese State Run Television) extensively and I can say unequivocally that it is better than FOX.
First off, it covers international news, while FOX seems preoccupied with junk celebrity news and is very Americocentric. Secondly, CCTV will simply ignore stories that will paint the Communist government in a bad light. FOX News will attack the person who broke the story and his/her immediate family.

Al Qaeda has always been opportunist. Why would they stay and fight losing battles with a massive occupying force when they can drive across Iran and live in peace in Pakistan, raiding across the border into Afghanistan at their whim? Most of the "bad" Iraqis (al-Sadr etc) have realized by now that if they just hang back and wait we will overspend ourselves into defeat and they can just take over when we eventually leave. They aren't just congressional. They aren't just presidential or executive. Just about every agency head, from Homeland Security to Interior, or Veteran's Administration, they all have these well armed motorcades. It is a badge of honor and a status symbol. I even went to J Gilberts down the street from my home on night a year and a half ago, and there were 5 chevy blazers, 3 gold badged uniformed secret service police cars, 2 metropolitan police department squad cars (DC cops, in Mclean VA), and a limousine. When I got into the restaurant, I asked the bartender what was going on, and it was Alberto Gonzales. He was having dinner with some friends.
It's a status symbol to have a motorcade around DC.
Plus, they also shut down streets for a half an hour before the motorcades even get moving. I've watched from the front of my building at 15th St and H St NW as all traffic gets stopped, backing up hundreds or thousands of cars, so someone nobody has ever heard of can get his little parade of power through the streets of Washington DC.- thecatcantalk, on 07/23/2008, -1/+2Christ wept. Homicides in America are a rare occurrence that's worthy of being reported on. When enough people are killed as a daily occurrence, such as in Iraq, you only really report the worst of the deaths.
Compared to my country, the USA's homicide rate is insane, but there is no possible way you could equate it to an open war zone.

- any1particular, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1Fox News Bias
"I challenge anybody to show me an example of bias in Fox News Channel."--Rupert Murdoch (Salon, 3/1/01)
Years ago, Republican party chair Rich Bond explained that conservatives' frequent denunciations of "liberal bias" in the media were part of "a strategy" (Washington Post, 8/20/92). Comparing journalists to referees in a sports match, Bond explained: "If you watch any great coach, what they try to do is 'work the refs.' Maybe the ref will cut you a little slack next time."
But when Fox News Channel, Rupert Murdoch's 24-hour cable network, debuted in 1996, a curious thing happened: Instead of denouncing it, conservative politicians and activists lavished praise on the network. "If it hadn't been for Fox, I don't know what I'd have done for the news," Trent Lott gushed after the Florida election recount (Washington Post, 2/5/01). George W. Bush extolled Fox News Channel anchor Tony Snow--a former speechwriter for Bush's father--and his "impressive transition to journalism" in a specially taped April 2001 tribute to Snow's Sunday-morning show on its five-year anniversary (Washington Post, 5/7/01). The right-wing Heritage Foundation had to warn its staffers not to watch so much Fox News on their computers, because it was causing the think tank's system to crash.
When it comes to Fox News Channel, conservatives don't feel the need to "work the ref." The ref is already on their side. Since its 1996 launch, Fox has become a central hub of the conservative movement's well-oiled media machine. Together with the GOP organization and its satellite think tanks and advocacy groups, this network of fiercely partisan outlets--such as the Washington Times, the Wall Street Journal editorial page and conservative talk-radio shows like Rush Limbaugh's--forms a highly effective right-wing echo chamber where GOP-friendly news stories can be promoted, repeated and amplified. Fox knows how to play this game better than anyone.
