- Zacktopia, on 12/09/2009, -2/+9Are there any other countries on the planet that "must unpick their ethnic myths" (whatever that is)?
No?
Nobody must unpick anything. Identities are what they are. Jewish identity is one of the oldest on the planet. Ironically, Arab Palestinian identity is one of the newest, and appears to be a very much failed experiment. - wpi97, on 12/23/2009, -2/+8"If American Jews stopped associating their fate with Israel..."
You mean like the German Jews, who only associated their fate with the Faterland, right? - wpi97, on 12/23/2009, -2/+8"There are many precedents: the Greek, Armenian, Ukrainian and Irish diasporas have all played an unhealthy role in perpetuating ethnic exclusivism and nationalist prejudice in the countries of their forebears."
And all this time I thought it was the persecution, the pogroms, and genocide that have "played an unhealthy role in perpetuating ethnic exclusivism and nationalist prejudice".
Who knew that the "Christian tax" that the Greeks living in the Ottoman Empire had to pay, the serfdom and the forced conversion of Ukrainians to Catholicism, the Armenian genocide of 1915, and the "Irish need not apply" signs had nothing to do with ethnic exlusivism and nationalist prejudice? - tzvika613, on 12/23/2009, -2/+7“Zionism’s detractor have often pointed to the problem of ‘dual loyalty’ unique to Jews living outside Israel. American Jews, for example, have been prone to charges of this kind. Now, however, the extension of the term ‘diaspora’; to minorities other than Jews living outside their homeland has resolved the problem of dual loyalty once and for all: The modern, democratic, multi-cultural state not only acknowledges dual allegiances, but encourages them: You can be African-American, Italian-American, or Irish-American, just as you can be Jewish-American, Jewish-British, Jewish-French, and even Jewish-Zionist.
“For Israel, the most significant development in this context is the European Council’ legal recognition of the relationship between states and their kin who live outside their borders. In the past, Israel was portrayed as an ‘ethnic democracy’ or ‘ethnocracy’ because of the responsibility is assumed for the welfare and interests of the Jewish people around the world. Yet the Venice Commission has now not only accepted the right of countries to maintain a connection with their diasporas, but has even confirmed the legitimacy of the principle of repatriation.” Amnon Rubenstein (New Essays On Zionism, Hazony, Hazony, Oren, eds. [Zionism: A Deviant Nationalism?]) (From Azure, Winter, 2004)

It' funny how every now and then anti-Zionists make the case for Zionism all on their own. - tzvika613, on 12/23/2009, -2/+5With a little wordplay with what mrukz selected becomes - "If American Jews stopped associating their fate with Israel and used their charitable cheques for better purposes, something similar might happen in the Middle East."
into
"If Arabs and Muslims throughout the world stopped associating their fate with Palestine and used their charitable cheques for better purposes, something similar might happen in the Middle East."
The wordplay applies to everything in his FTA. But, basically, who is an outsider to define a groups national identity and interests ? Kind of presumptuous, no ? - mrukz, on 12/23/2009, -8/+2FTA:
We could thus hope, in time, to establish a natural distinction between people who happen to be Jews but are citizens of other countries; and people who are Israeli citizens and happen to be Jews. This could prove very helpful. There are many precedents: the Greek, Armenian, Ukrainian and Irish diasporas have all played an unhealthy role in perpetuating ethnic exclusivism and nationalist prejudice in the countries of their forebears. The civil war in Northern Ireland came to an end in part because an American president instructed the Irish emigrant community in the US to stop sending arms and cash to the Provisional IRA. If American Jews stopped associating their fate with Israel and used their charitable cheques for better purposes, something similar might happen in the Middle East.
