- KuntaKinte, on 10/12/2007, -8/+72FOX: "they don't allow us to see the heroes who died in iraq"....."now onto the news, will paris find her chihuahua"?
- aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -6/+66Let's clarify. The pilot is not a hero. He died, either because of a mistake or an accident, we don't know which yet. That does not make you a hero. A firefighter running into a burning building is risking his life for others. That is a hero. The word hero is so overused it lacks all meaning in our society.
- appleann1, on 10/12/2007, -18/+57Suddenly Fox is credible?
- EntropyMan, on 10/12/2007, -13/+39What's most astonishing is that the commentator hasn't yet been canned for speaking the truth.
Of course, now that it's Pelosi's war to lose, I'm sure it's also her fault that we don't honor the fallen heroes of Iraq.
/sarcasm - smoothmedia, on 10/12/2007, -13/+28credible? no.
but at least some of their anchors show signs of being human - EntropyMan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19@6thReplicant,
That's exactly what I mean. He's "on the left" compared to the rest of Fox. But that's not what "on the left" means to the rest of the world. For most of the world, his comments are simply normal and intelligent. You really should try reading some foreign newspapers sometime to see what "the left" is really about. We get only two viewpoints in America: green and greener (and I don't mean that in the Green Party sense of the word). - FRANKeB, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18"Hundreds upon hundreds of soldiers"? Doesn't he mean THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS?
- lived666, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Define "on the left." Do you mean, the Fox News camera is situated to his right?
Alot of people on the Right think anyone that does not agree with them is on the left. Shepard Smith is not on the left he is somewhere in the middle. His show is mainly just reporting the news and not news analysis. It is the only thing worth watching on FOX News. - appleann1, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19entropyman,
Either you really don't watch Fox, or just don't watch Shep Smith's show. He's been on for years, very much on the left, and says this sort of thing often. - roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12why is aliengods being dugg down?
He's perfectly correct. Calling him a hero is wrong, and it cheapens the word. If he's a hero, so is every other pilot in the world, because thats essentially all he is. The Blue Angles essentially picks the best pilots right out of flight school in the military, the average age for a Blue Angles Pilot to start is mid-late 20s, and early 30s. No active Blue Angles pilot has seen or will see combat...
They are essentially recruiters guys....thats their purpose is to make the navy and marines look good, and make more people want to join... - shawnfassett, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17When you are so wrong...you get to be right sometimes.
- wyrlor, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Seriously, the media is not liberal, especially not most of the US media.
- roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Dont you know, anyone is credible when they say what you want them to...its when they disagree with you that they are lying, conniving bastards.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -3/+9The mainstream media in this country isn't inherently liberal.
The Republican party has just ***** up so badly that its embarassing to give them or their respective outlets any positive editorial anymore. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6America does not and has never had the right to tell a nation like Iraq what their government should be. The excuses and blame shifting from the right wing don't matter. The invasion is illegal and it will not stand. The Iraqis are correct to resist an occupying army.
I do think it's sad that more poor Americans are going to have to die before the right wing finally admits defeat and slinks away for twenty years. But dying because you were foolish enough to enlist in the US military doesn't make you a hero. - eurotrash007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Thankfully we're in Iraq fighting the country and individuals that supported those 19 hijackers. Oh wait...
- wyrlor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Appleann1, you should know that he's not "on the left". Both, the republicans AND the democrats would be considered as conservative, right-wing parties in Europe. Yes, the so called democrats aren't even somewhere in between, they're quite on the right.
- peeinian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5He clipped a pine tree, somebody please explain how that makes him a "hero."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Even in American politics, Shepard Smith is not "on the left".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What does 9-11 have to do with Iraq?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Shep and Geraldo have both shown signs of being human from time to time.
- weekapaug81, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I love how groupthink zombies obsess with Right and Left, and then get offended when someone points out that they aren't in fact opposites.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -2/+6The fact is our mission there is lost, whatever it was.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't digg many "thinkprogress"; but maybe Fox news will get a little more coverage once in a while.
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Go to the Iraq page on Yahoo Photos. There are multiple photographs of soldiers' funerals. The difference is that these photographs could only be taken with the approval of the families. Maybe, just maybe, a soldier's family does not want their photograph used as propoganda. Don't you think its common courtesy to ask first?
- Kokichi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Liviu Librescu was a true hero.
- caution, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This goes to show you that network talent is clueless.
Per DoD policy, any media coverage of any funeral, even ones in Arlington or other national cemeteries is up to the family. This is something that the Casualty Assistance Officer and funeral director discuss with the family while planning the funeral. The line reporters who cover military stuff know this.
There have been many open-media OIF/OEF funerals, but they don't make national news. - jtako, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@aliengoods & @Silentnite85
Quote from the report,
"This is a scene we are not accustomed to see during war times. They don’t allow us to see the victims — uh, heroes who died for us in Iraq. We don’t get to see their caskets come back. It’s a wonderful honor to be able to pay tribute to this man in this way. Wouldn’t it be nice if we were able to do this with the hundreds upon hundreds who have died for us in Iraq?"
The report does not say that the pilot was a hero it references those fighting in Iraq as heroes. - Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Didn't you realize Aliengods? Anyone thats a victim of anything nowadays is also a hero ... just because.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8NEWS FLASH:
Fox News Channel personality Shepard Smith is a LEFT-LEANING MODERATE.
Yes, he has a southern accent. Yes, he is on Fox News Channel. But he is not a conservative and never has been.
Watch the Fox Report some time, which is the show he hosts. It's actually the only watchable program on Fox News Channel, and coincidentally one of their highest-rated programs. Quite a paradox. - creepermclurker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Offering the "Liberal Media" talking point BS undermines anything else you might have to say.
You would do well to drop it. - LucidDr34m3r, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I'm liberal. I hate the war. Don't exaggerate. Three to four thousand. Still a tragedy, but "THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS" makes it sound like Americans are getting slaughtered. If you want to talk about thousands upon thousands, you should talk about Iraqis.
- appleann1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2JP is the only one who has made any sense here and immediately got dugg down. So much for exchanging ideas.
"Smith joined Fox News as a general assignment reporter for the New York bureau in 1996. He was later promoted to senior correspondent for the channel."
You wonder why he hasn't been fired? He's been with Fox for 11 yrs, and has been repeatedly PROMOTED. - creepermclurker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Wrong.
Shep Smith is not "on the left" any way you might try to frame it. - BohicaTwentyTwo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You are a disgusting person.
/no sarcasm - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"This is a matter of respect for the soldiers and their families."
And ...
Iraq has WMD.
No one anticipated the breach of the levees. - mb3581, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I was watching FN yesterday when that segment aired. What he said was that is was an honor to be able to view the flag draped coffin of one of our military men. The media, or anyone else for that matter, is not allowed to film or even take pictures of the soldiers coffins who died in combat. I was recently in DC and went to Arlington Cemetary, they asked us not to photograph any funeral processions. This is a matter of respect for the soldiers and their families.
- socialidiocy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But please don't forget all of the reasons that we were given to start the war originally...WMDs, then terrorists...the tide has changed so often. If the U.S. really cared about the people of Iraq being free, we should have done more in '91.
- kaiser44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@JUNKIE07, I will not defend fox but why would a sociology class spend 1 1/2 hours on them.
Did they do the same with the other networks? - nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8"70% of the country isn't democratic. If it were, then Republicans wouldn't be 7-3 in the last 10 presidential elections"
Presidential elections are typically more about the person running than their party. Personality and charisma matter a lot more than whether you have an R or a D next to your name in Gubernatorial and Presidential elections. How else can you explain Tony Knowles and Arnold?
Also, Shepard Smith isn't a liberal. He's very independent when it comes to almost everything political, basing his decisions on what he thinks is best, not on party policy. He holds some liberal views, some conservative. He does, however, believe it is his responsibility to report news from a conservative perspective to balance national news. This is why a lot of other news reporters don't like him. He flat out says "yes, Fox has a conservative bias, but there's nothing wrong with that." I personally like the guy . . . he has a sense of humor that is rare to see on the news. When you get tired of angry, screaming talking heads like O'Reily and Olbermann, it's refreshing to hear someone who doesn't take himself too seriously and doesn't think politics is the only news worth talking about. - davewashere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Shepard Smith is a moderate with some left leanings. He also has temper that makes him entertaining at times. Besides the infamous Florida recount assault incident, he's also become blown up at guests on his show. I remember somebody tried to compare James Frey to Hunter S. Thompson once, and Shep seemed to be personally offended by the comparison. You would have thought HST was his father.
- DTJunkie07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IDK why, but I think it had more to do with my professors itch to open our eyes to how ***** up they are and how corrupt FOX News has become. And no we only watched videos on fox specifically..but i see where your going with that last statement.
- DigitalOmnivore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@nixonrichard
Even if presidential elections were not about party, if the country were 70% democrat, republicans wouldn't have won 7 of the last 10.
But elections are about the party, and issues. Yes, Arnold won California, by being a liberal Republican and his superstardom helped out, but don't overlook the fact that californians wanted someone to fix their economy/social benefit system, which is why they elected a Republican.
Shepard Smith has called himself a liberal before. Who are you kidding? - stevebor1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2War-times? He was a stunt pilot.
- jbinner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@roosterjm2k2
they don't come right from flight school, check your facts.
http://www.blueangels.navy.mil/off_06.htm
"Kevin joined the Blue Angels in September 2005. He has accumulated more than 2,500 flight hours and 200 carrier arrested landings. His decorations include the Air Medal, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, and various personal and unit awards."
this was NOT pilot error. I am sure it will come down to loss of power from the engines, etc. - sysoprock, on 10/12/2007, -10/+11Sounds like Fox is beginning to smell the change in the air.
No matter what their political lean might be their bottom line is ratings and if 70% of the country disagrees with what they are saying they will probably change their tune.
Fox News 2009: Colmes & Hannity? - DTJunkie07, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is a funny story for me to be reading right now because i just now got back from sociology class where i watched a 1 and a half hour video on how ***** up fox news channel really is. And O'Reily can suck my ***** *****. He is the most pathological liar I have ever seen...not that he has anything to do with this article...I just don't like him.
- blimpmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@roosterjm2k2
"No active Blue Angles pilot has seen or will see combat..."
Think again junior. From Maj. Nathan Miller's bio on the Blue Angels website:
"Nate deployed twice aboard USS Constellation (CV 64) in March 2001 and in November 2002, flying combat missions
in support of Operations Southern Watch and Iraqi Freedom. While with VMFA-323, he served Naval Air Training and Operation Procedures Standardization (NATOPS) officer, safety as the officer, aviation life support systems officer, powerline division officer and administrative officer. While there, Nate contributed to the “Death Rattlers” receiving the 2003 Robert M. Hanson Award as the Marine Corps Aviation Association’s Fighter Attack Squadron of the Year."
From Commander Kevin Mannix bio:
"He remained on deployment through March 1991 until the completion of Operation Desert Storm. Kevin flew 20 combat missions in Operation Desert Storm, including the Night One Strike on Baghdad."
Every Blue Angels pilot is combat trained. They just happen to be chosen to be on a demonstration team. After they leave the Blue Angels, if they remain in the service, they will go back to being combat pilots.
You could look it up yourself: http://www.blueangels.navy.mil/ - spudmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -14/+15No not credible at all, but they are outstanding in their hypocrisy on this particular subject.
