- chrisdena, on 06/29/2008, -0/+0I find it ironic that Broder, or any other journalist, would criticize politicians for dumbing down policy. I hate to be in the position of defending politicians, but the shallow professionalism of journalists -- who are the ultimate filters of political messages -- require politicians to stoop to dumbing down in order to maintain some control over their message. Otherwise, the media will dumb it down for them in a desperate effort to gin up drama. That's the ultimate hope of the Internet in the political environment -- that politicians and government leaders can fully explain themselves without having to cut complicated policy matters into 8-second soundbites for the evening news, and the public can respond with equal depth, directly, without the intervention and editing of the self-perceived gatekeepers in the media.
