- Insightful, on 09/13/2009, -2/+22California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spent $10 billions in 2008, a tenth of our State's operating fund. At the same time, the State is cutting education, law enforcement, furloghing workers, shuttind down courts, etc. because politicians do not want to look weak in letting out people who are in prison for non-violent crimes, who are too old, etc.
Bill Whalen knows nothing about CA budget and prison system. His claim to fame? Speech writer for 1992 Bush Quayle election campaign.
Buried for inaccuracy. - jokerslayer, on 09/13/2009, -1/+18There were seriously four words in your entire post. You couldn't just read it in your head and see that you used the wrong word?
- Blinker1315, on 09/12/2009, -2/+16I don't think California will be the only state where crime is a big issue in 2010. Here in Maryland, notorious for its murder rate, which is mostly gang and hard-drug related, thefts and break-ins are on the rise.
- sporkman, on 09/13/2009, -5/+15Wow, I'm amazed, no right-wing nut in here blaming it on Obama!

- LouisCipher777, on 09/13/2009, -2/+9wait... wait... wait...
it left when? - igeoffi, on 09/13/2009, -5/+11Whoever wins, Democrat or Republican, we're all going to get screwed over one way or another. It's the almost same thing every time.
- tmyprod, on 09/13/2009, -1/+6...tics.
When you're copy-and-pasting headlines, make sure you get the whole thing. - ryanonfire, on 09/13/2009, -0/+4Left for dead!? I love that game!
- heynow21, on 09/13/2009, -0/+4It's because those damn bureaucrats in Annapolis, the corrupt, numbers driven police hierarchy, and crumbling school system all leading to a sense of hopelessness among your state's bottom dwellers.
Man I miss The Wire. - inactive, on 09/13/2009, -0/+4Well one thing we could start doing, put every illegal immigrant on a bus or plane and ship their ass back to where they came from, let their host nations deal with them.
- inactive, on 09/13/2009, -0/+4I'm amazed no one is here blaming the for-profit prison system as an excuse for thugs raping and pillaging.
- dknybbrz, on 09/13/2009, -0/+3Have to agree with you there, if there was more enforcement maybe so many wouldn't be so quick to slip in and continue committing crimes.
- rushiku, on 09/13/2009, -0/+3Oh, politcs! And here I thought Californiapoli was a tasty Italian dessert, though I did think crime was an odd choice for a seasoning.
- mrpither, on 09/18/2009, -0/+2In California's $$$ prison system (spending 2-3 times per prisoner more than Florida does), the cost of sending them back home is likely much cheaper than incarcerating them for more than a few months/weeks.
- rebrad, on 09/13/2009, -1/+3Socialism cost and the elites don't pay it.
- dknybbrz, on 09/13/2009, -0/+2I agree with what you're getting at but don't you mean let their country of origin deal with them? We are their (unwilling) host nation.
- ZenMojo, on 09/13/2009, -3/+51. Turn prisons over to investment in the private sector.
2. Lobby to close schools in the public sector.
3. Make desperate people.
4. Build bigger prisons.
5. Profit. - Truedirt, on 09/12/2009, -11/+13Boy, did it ever left?
- thinkb4utype, on 09/13/2009, -2/+3I was glad to get out of Maryland after O'Madley took over. He's done nothing but raise taxes. Ehrlich left the state with a surplus, but the damnocrats spent it as fast as they could. When Michael Steel ran for congress, the Baltimore Sun and the Washington Post endorsed Bartlett instead. Bartlett ran for the house endorsing term limits, stays past the 2 terms he promised, and grooms his son to take over his seat, what a hypocrite.
What a messed up state Maryland is and it's because of the damnocrats. - MidnightTide, on 09/13/2009, -5/+6Illegal immigrants? Umm....when they are caught doing something wrong why not ship em back to their own country? Why should we pay for them?.....and if prisons are so expensive, just make some tent cities in the middle of the desert (and if some of em die, who cares)
- thinkb4utype, on 09/13/2009, -0/+1I mixed up Carden and Bartlett. They're both crooks.
- samsmartjr, on 09/14/2009, -0/+1Are you ready to pay for the taxes to fund such a thing?
- samsmartjr, on 09/14/2009, -0/+1The for-profit prison system doesn't lead to thugs raping and pillaging.
However, it leads to the imprisonment of offenders of less serious crimes, such as drugs and prostitution, to hard time. They go to jail and, because they're an ex-convict, have a tough time finding a legit job with decent pay. So what are they forced to do to make money just to survive? Commit crimes, causing the cycle all over again. - absurdist, on 09/13/2009, -3/+3More of Murdoch's WSJ op-ed paranoid asshattery. Who diggs these things up, anyway?
- rizzono, on 09/13/2009, -6/+4The problem is all these judges that are too lenient on criminals, especially repeat offenders and slap on the wrist punishments and fines that mostly can be based on who your lawyer is. Look at countries like Singapore which have strict laws that don't play around and virtually no crime. We need to get back actually punishing criminals and protecting the innocent and not the other way around.
- TheEighth, on 09/13/2009, -6/+1As the greatest living political mastermind of our time, I can tell you that all facets of political discussion (crime especially) are well within my domain.
