- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23I've been shot at quite a bit in the service of our country and one thing I can tell you is there is absolutely nobody in a firefight that isn't looking for the best way out. Unfortunately it is usually winning or running.
If I'm not armed -- I'm gonna be a rabbit too. And I have decorations for valor. There is a difference between brave and stupid. - mchamberlin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18In the absence of any facts at this early juncture, or even if all the facts had somehow been revealed, this might be the single most offensive thing I have ever read. Questioning the "manhood" of the Va Tech students and, indeed, American men everywhere under what had to be terrifying circumstances that, I am guessing, were not the kinds of circumstances these kids dealt with on a daily basis, is cowardly and insensitive, to say the least. There are AT LEAST 30 families out there with dead sons, daughters, friends, brothers and sisters. THIS is your observation about what happened and how it might have been prevented?
How many of us who are NOT in Iraq or Afghanistan confront armed shooters as a matter of course in our daily lives?
Who the hell is Nathaniel Blake and where does he get the nerve? - jackelsmack, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16"If the students had guns ... they wouldn't be dead now"
Umm... you realize that police would've shot anyone they saw holding or carrying a gun, don't you?
The only people who would bring a loaded gun to Engineering class every day are wackos. - oceanmoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Um, guns, bullets, shooting. Which part of this do people not get? Heroic to run at the guy and get shot? Um, did I miss something?
Let the students be and grieve. Those who escaped may feel "survivor guilt" for some time to come. Don't make it worse with this kind of baseless condemnation. - xekko, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15I live in Europe and this kind of approach just baffles me. How do we solve gun crime in America? Give everyone a gun!
I think this is what's inherently wrong with the US. Every problem can be solved through force and every person can buy a military-grade gun no matter their state of mind or intentions. We have gun crime in Europe, but in nowhere near the scale in the states. I can't even begin to comprehend living in a country accepts those kind of laws. - lukas42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11see also:
Derbyshire: Blaming the Victims ... Because They're Total Wusses
http://digg.com/political_opinion/Derbyshire_Blaming_the_Victims_Because_They_re_Total_Wusses - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@capon nuts: I'm not a democrat. And I damn sure wouldn't hang out to get shot up. I'd like to think that I'd be as brave as the holocost survivor that sacrificed his life to save a couple of his students. Fight back -- possibly but honestly, I'd bookin' out the door too.
Your comment is stupid and dangerous. Don't turn this into a right to carry argument. It is the wrong time. Show some consideration for the victims and their families. Get into the gun debate in a week or two - not now. - tast01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah, lets blame the victims... Honestly you should be the one ashamed of yourself!
- kniwshmdcknit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5OK, can we bury this? We don't need another Ann Coulter.
- wheresmyreagan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Two men were walking in the woods when they saw a bear charging at them. One man sat down and started putting on his running shoes. The other man asked "Why are you putting on shoes, you can't outrun a bear?"
"I know", said the first man, "but I don't have to outrun the bear. I just have to outrun you." - jimbecile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5it's just so typical of this whole crowd. "why, it's easy- just (beat up the gunman/establish a democracy/eliminate taxes) and you're done! licketty-split! why isn't everyone as smart as me?"
- Ruckgesicht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Mr. Blake should go become an hero to serve as an example then.
- chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well, they are engineering students, nerds aren't really meant for fighting
Under stress I probably would of ran or hid, but if I had a moment to think, I would of thrown something heavy and hard at him
Like my bag, weighs 7 kg on a heavy day, mostly books
At my Uni we have like wooden sticks to pull down black boards, I'm sure our lecturers would have used that - jackelsmack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, looks like this story is been 'disappeared', since I can't find it anywhere in the list of Upcoming Stories. Congratulations too all of Blake's apologists who were able to prevent the public from seeing what popular conservative writers actually write about (see also John Derbyshire)
- nomonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Are some of these people actually stupid enough to believe that letting people carry guns will REDUCE the number of murders?
(Well, I was asking "Are some of these people actually stupid enough to believe we can achieve stability in Iraq by invading" five years ago, so I guess I know the answer.)
We tried the "let everyone carry" approach, you know, a HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS AGO. Until every marshal and sheriff in the wild west realized that taking them away was going to help.
Crazy thing... turns out that when people have guns all the time they tend to shoot other people with them. Go figure.
If people actually think there would be fewer massacres with more guns... they are complete morons.
You can argue you have a right to bear arms... but claiming it will stop things like this is just stupid. - KuntaKinte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2people say this ***** because they want their names in the headlines, it was probably more of a publicity stunt to get himself attention
- lived666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What would you have done if you were in a similar situation to the students at Virginia Tech?
- PATSCRU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah, talking out of your sphincter is always a guarantee to get in the headlines...just ask imus.
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Excellent point. Even the NRA should have a hard time pegging lawmen like Wyatt Earp as bleeding-heart care-bear liberals.
- hawkeye17, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Where is the humanity in the Right Wing of this country?? Events like what happened in VT bring the scum out of the woodwork. Remember these names people so you can ignore their ignorant rants in the future. There is a callous disregard for human life that is running rampant throughout the Right Wing of this country.
- Nudar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't digg me down without a reason. The title of the article is placing the blame on conservatives. How would you like it if everything Hillary Clinton was prefaced by "Liberal says ...."
- Nudar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Read my statement, hawkeye. This has nothing to do with conservatives. This is just one jackass.
- TheWedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How wonderful it is to find out that your cousin is the "second worst person in the world."
Damn conservative side of the family... - lnf69, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@Sabata
Saying that guns do not equal violence is not exactly accurate.
I cannot think of any way to use a gun that would not be considered a violent act, except maybe not using the gun at all. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Don't ***** say conservative when you mean neoconservative! Apples and Avacados!
- pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3someone shoot Nathaniel Blake in the chest 3 times and see how much of a "hero" he is.
- Nudar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Just because the moron who said this might have some conservative political views is no reason to throw conservative in the topic title. 99.99999999% of conservatives think what this guy said is beyond stupid.
- Sabata, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3I dont know why he's getting dugg down, his point is perfectly valid. And about gun control; When does control stop? Gun !=Violence, it's a tool and as a tool, it has it's purposes, conversely, there are other means to produce violence. I mean, I remember reading a digg article about UK girls beating up a kid with sticks and *****, or that samurai sword incident, *****, ban sticks and swords then. While you're at it, ban cars and alcohol, they cause raging violence. There is no middle ground, it's either ban them all or ban nothing.
- siszam, on 10/12/2007, -18/+8If the students had guns to defend themselves they wouldn't be dead now. Instead they were helpless and defenseless just like the gun control nuts wanted them to be. When you're unarmed all you can do is stand and die or run.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2Sure, when faced with a life threating situation, just bend over, kiss your ass good bye, while patting
yourself on the back as a good democrat.
Yes I know, how dare I demand I be able to take responsibility for protecting my own life.
I should just cower like some chicken at slaughter, like all you gutless idealogicals that have no clue
about the real world other than what you are told.
The shame is on you!
