- vroom101, on 10/11/2007, -20/+633You know something, let's not have ANY prayers in the U.S. House of Representatives or in the U.S. Senate! The United States of America does not need a debate over whose prayer, what prayer, which prayer is appropriate in the people's house, i.e., The United States Congress!
The wise founders of the United States of America deliberately built this country's foundation with religious-neutral bricks, cemented together with a rich mixture of sweat, blood, and tears that had origins in Old World religious wars and persecution; and the forefathers determined that "It. Won't. Happen. In. America." These 20th and 21st century persistent and determined efforts by far too many U.S. citizens to turn U.S. religious-neutral-politics into combustible politico-religio-politics need stop. Now. Period. - Bawk, on 10/11/2007, -34/+513That's absolutely disgusting. People like that are the plague that is destroying this country.
- toolegittoquit, on 10/11/2007, -38/+322Why the hell are they even saying prayers in the senate. I want senators that are capable of getting stuff done without divine intervention.
Seriously enough with religion already. We're just animals descended from other animals. We're not special, no one is listening to prayers. - HeatherH88, on 10/11/2007, -13/+281You, church, go to the corner.
You, state, go to the other corner.
Now I want you both to think about what you've done. - qwickone, on 10/11/2007, -3/+154"I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ" - Gandhi
He definitely hit the nail on the head with that one. - iBenzin, on 10/11/2007, -17/+140This country, is not what our founding fathers... expected of us.
- frisbeeman, on 10/11/2007, -7/+111Dear Religious Nuts,
Stop being such gigantic douchenozzles.
Sincerely,
Everyone Else - rhabd0mancer, on 10/11/2007, -11/+113I'm actually a bit surprised that these loony nutjobs are allowed into the Senate building.
Operation Save America is loosely affiliated with a known terrorist organization, the "Army of God." - Rsardinia, on 10/11/2007, -17/+109Ok, now this wouldn't even be an issue if there was this thing called "Separation of Church and State" which we are supposed to uphold in the constitution. Why are there even prayors at the Senate's invocation in the first place? Just go to work and do your job, pray at home if you like, but why have a mass prayor at your job? It's your job. Its reasons like this that religious nut jobs (like bush) cancel legislation for things like Stem Cell research. Separation my ass.
- yergi, on 10/11/2007, -7/+85If those people are Christian, then I am not.
- KnytFyre, on 10/11/2007, -4/+80I concur. This country was founded on the belief of religious freedom, but certain groups have taken that to mean, Christian freedom. I should preface that I am a Christian. But I find it appalling how badly so many so-called Christians treat other religions. According to the bible, when Jesus was in his ministry, he went out to see the people that did not share his views. He did not judge them on it, He simply shared his viewpoints. This is supposed to be the model that Christians (meaning Christ like) follow. If, as a nation, we could just start seeing past our differences, and stop thinking we have the right to force others to believe as we do, we'd be much better off.
- jmkiii, on 10/11/2007, -10/+65Who, the Christian Reich?
- reed311, on 10/11/2007, -8/+62The religion of tolerance strikes again.
- qwickone, on 10/11/2007, -6/+50What status quo is that? I thought the status quo here was religious tolerance?
- iamdeirdre, on 10/11/2007, -1/+41I love this quote from the comments section:
----------------------
Er, isn’t freedom of religion one of the founding principles of the U.S.?

The Founding Fathers would not have approved of some robe wearing foreigner speaking in front of Congress.
Comment by THE KING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! — July 12, 2007 @ 5:49 pm
-----------------------------------------
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Jesus a "robe wearing foreigner"? What's wrong with people? - greensauce, on 10/11/2007, -4/+43I thought
"Ratified unanimously in 1797 by the Senate, Article 11 states: 'As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion' "
WTF are these people doing there anyway?
http://www.stephenjaygould.org/ctrl/treaty_tripoli.html - ed3839, on 10/11/2007, -15/+52My first thought was "Oh, those *****... Insane how much the bastard-step-children religions of Judaism (Christians and Muslims) hate anyone who is not one of them...." (Jews don't care.. they're sure everyone else is screwed anyway, just for not being of the Chosen people).
Then my second thought was "Why the ***** is there a prayer in the Senate?!" - tsf5000, on 10/11/2007, -5/+42Christians doing something stupid and behaving in a completely hypocritical way? Surely this must be a first.
- RanIntoTheDevil, on 10/11/2007, -13/+48First of all, it seems some people in the government need to read the Constitution. They might find a little thing about Separation of Church and State. Second, since it seems our representatives are unfamiliar with the document they are trying to uphold, people should at least allow prayer from every religion. Whoever these people were sicken me, such disrespect and intolerance is not Christian! Anyone with a a slight knowledge of the bible knows this. Christianity is about, well...Christ. Stop obsessing over those obsolete laws and rules in the old testament and start living the way Jesus preached! For those "Christians" who don't understand what exactly Jesus preached, it is peace, love of all(that means ALL as in Gays and other people who disagree with you), and tolerance. I am an agnostic, but I can clearly see that these people are not Christian!
- stubear, on 10/11/2007, -6/+40That "Christian" holiday in December you allude to was originally a pagan holiday that celebrated the Winter Solstice. Personally I celebrate family and friends, not some invisible man in the sky.
- Lewie, on 10/11/2007, -6/+39Actually, many (if not most) of the Founding Fathers were Atheist and Deist. We didn't start putting "God" in our government until the 1950's during McCarthyism and the Red Scare.
And don't you think the Christian domination of Senate Prayers violates the First Amendment? If you want to pray, go to church. Leave it out of my government. - weizbox, on 10/11/2007, -3/+30Why is ANY prayer being said in the Senate? It's ***** up to begin with...
- judgeFire, on 10/11/2007, -1/+26"Grammer", hee hee.
- blorc, on 10/11/2007, -12/+37Yergi is right. These are people aren't really Christians, or they're at the very least seriously misguided ones.
Please don't let these people influence your perception of who an actual Christian is. - Terr01, on 10/11/2007, -5/+29Well, it was good for a laugh at the AmeriTaliban.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+25I agree with the parent comment. I'm a Christian and this disgusts me. We've had Muslims, Jews, Russian and Greek Orthodox and many other religions open congressional sessions with prayer and it was fine. There should be nothing wrong with Hindus doing it, too.
The sad part is: if these idiots were in one of the sessions where one of the other religions led off, they'd have probably had the same reaction. I think this was just an instance of a bunch of idiot wingnuts being in the session at the wrong time.
Nevertheless...it's a sad display. These people are not the kind of Christians I grew up around. - JAVandiver, on 10/11/2007, -10/+33I really wish that everyone would be tolerant of everyone else's spiritual beliefs. There are so many people of every creed who have a blatant disrespect for everyone else who espouses any belief other than their own. I think it benefits everyone to demonstrate our diversity by highlighting others cultures. For everyone who does not believe in a higher power, what does it really hurt you to have a chaplain of some form of another bless our country? Give it a rest! That means the all of you fanatical Christians, Muslims, Atheists, etc.!
- NSMike, on 10/11/2007, -3/+26I was going to say, this amounts to the same type of dangerous mindset as extremist Muslim terrorists.
- BrainInAJar, on 10/11/2007, -2/+24most of the founding fathers were deists, not christians. a lot of them had quite a bit of distaste for christianity.
perhaps you should actually read history books rather than listening to your pastor every now and again, ken? - warchant, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23this why people have a bad image of what christians are. it pisses me off when i always have to explain to people that most christians are not like this.
as a fairly conservative christian...this kind of crap absolutely disgusts me!
what were they expecting to do with this? win people to christianity? absolutely idiots! - AgentEntropy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20I'm surprised you say that's a lonely thing to say. If we are just animals that means we are surrounded by a community of life of which we are definitely a part. It means we aren't separate from this world in anyway. We are as much a part of this world as any other animal or any other form of life. To me that's a very sacred and comforting thought; and I know I'm not alone in that.
- t1andonlywall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21Actually, if you read the constitution you will find that nowhere in it are the words "Seperation of Church and State". That stems from a letter Thomas Jefferson wrote to the churches assuring them that they will be able to practice their religion without any hassling from the government.
Now, as I'm a Hindu, I'm utterly appalled at the misbehavior of these "morons". If the US is coming to this state of agression and singlemindedness, I may have to move out of here to a place where all cultures are accepted and not hated upon. Hinduism is a religion of peace and acceptance, which is quite similar to many ideals that Christianity expresses. If two different religions are preaching the same thing, why shouldn't a Hindu, or a Muslim, of a Jewish person, or a person of any other religious affiliation offer the prayer to commence the meeting.
Its preposterous. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+24Save America from what?? the US was NOT founded on Christianity. Jesus did not walk across the ocean to discover America. What do they put in the water over there?
- DeadBabySoup, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22I'm starting to get really afraid for the world...i think we're going to destroy eachother in the near future, it looks bad. But when i see ***** like this, i look foward to getting what we all deserve, which is our destruction. Then maybe a smarter race will come along and have our history as "what not to do"
- kinerry, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Apparently you don't know what the establishment clause is?
- willcoll, on 10/11/2007, -5/+24*****. I'm christian and Im offended by their disrespectful outbursts.
- spyd3rweb, on 10/11/2007, -4/+23prayer in schools = crusades, witch burnings, and Inquisitions.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+23im with posted #2 - no prayer is better than any prayer.
- crobinso, on 10/11/2007, -4/+21Damn super righteous, non-tolerant, crazy christian fundamentalists.........
- MemeWarrior, on 10/11/2007, -5/+22No, I don't have a problem spending money that says "In God we Trust" on it because it doesn't say In the Judeo-Christian God we trust. Christians do not have a monopoly on the word God. It always amuses me when the willfully ignorant, such as your self, try to 'enlighten' others.
- Gaki, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18This is not a FACT, is it an OPINION ... and a poorly educated one at that.
What is killing America is not that they have "strayed" from the path, but that they spend a LOT more than they make, eat too much, exercise too little and use so many resources that they have turned a country that was the motherlode of resources in 1800 into a vacuum, sucking resources from around the world to feed the gluttony. MAN made this problem and MAN will have to find a way to stop it. - Cannfodd3r, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Actually, hate to break it to you, but that holiday in December pre-dates Christianity. But yeah, I do enjoy my day off for the Winter Solstice currently known as Christmas.
- lateralus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18You do realize Jesus Christ was not born in the Winter season don't you? Even Christian scholars agree that he was likely born near April/May.
The whole Tree celebration is a Pagan tradition that was, well, hijacked. - Aesculapius, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19WWJD? Definitely not that.
Way to follow His example! - kinerry, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19I think it's MORE egotistical to claim that someone is with NO proof
- jimmoses, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Tolerance is an admirable rule of thumb, but it doesn't always work. Should you be tolerant of other people's intolerance of you? I think & hope they are a minority, but there are those who think you should burn in hell for not accepting their beliefs, and lobby to pass laws to support that view... should you tolerate that? Hell no!
- jsbarone, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17I completely agree with you, Vroom. If you feel like believing in a religion---*FINE*, but don't bring involve it in a supposedly religion-neutral realm like politics.
- jimmoses, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15"I'm actually a bit surprised that these loony nutjobs are allowed into the Senate building."
Are you kidding? Nutjobs are attracted to politics like flies to a turd. Like DA said, "Anyone capable of getting himself made president should on no account be allowed to do the job". - krebcycle, on 10/11/2007, -5/+19Personally I don't think we need any kind of prayer in the Senate. I think interrupting any public prayer in the senate is perfectly tolerable, be it Hindu or Christian. The great ghost in the sky doesn't need any self-esteem help on the government dime folks.
- Drahkar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Only if you are a Intolerant Christian. At least that's what aitf311 seems to be indicating.
