- davidmesaaz, on 05/23/2008, -1/+5The flipside of this is Castro is blaming the poverty of his country on the embargo and not on the failed idelogy that is communism. If we eliminate the embargo he will have to either ditch communism for a Chinese style reform or retreat back into communism. Castro came to power saying that global trade was expliotive and but after he assumed power he said the reason why we are poor is that the US doesn't trade with us. What is it is Cuba's poverty due to a lack of trade or because of it?

Every Leftard on Digg who calls for the lifting of the embargo should read this article. - aki009, on 05/24/2008, -0/+2Caferrell, your theory seems to imply that the open trade practiced by West Germany to East Germany should have caused a collapse of the East German dictatorship under Honecker (and his predecessors). However, the East German response was to restrict such offers of trade, including the movement of money, people and goods. Nothing changed, and only the looming collapse of the Soviet Union sunk the East German state.
Simply because one offers trade with the ulterior motive of debasing the power structure of a dictator doesn't mean that the dictator would fail to mold the interaction to his benefit. There is also the part about the Soviet Union arming Cuba, providing it with generous amounts of effectively free oil, and employing many forms of close "cooperation" between the ruling systems in both countries.
I also recommend that you read about my background before making comments about anyone feeding me on any topic, including this one. Right now you are the one sounding like someone who is merely regurgitating conclusions that you did not make yourself. - Qong, on 05/23/2008, -2/+4Quality comments there, moolaismyfriend...
P.S. You're retarded. - aki009, on 05/23/2008, -2/+4Buried for ignoring the reality of realpolitik and this thing called the Cold War.
- inactive, on 05/23/2008, -2/+2Castro would never have survived if there had been open exchange and trade with the United States.
THAT is realpolitik.
We would have peacefully dislodged Cuba from the Soviet sphere of influence.
Don't eat everything that they feed feed you aki009, some of it comes out of the hind end of a bull. - inactive, on 05/23/2008, -3/+3My friend, the embargo was the justification that Castro used to xplain the curtailment of civil liberties and the lack of consumer goods and even food in Cuba. Our perpetual antagonism was his excuse for jailing dissidents.
The embargo has bee an enormous failure, because it has been the reason that the Communist regime of the Castro brothers has stayed in power for 50 years.
If we had opened up to trade and tourism with Cuba, Castro wouldn't have lasted past 1970.
