- aguynamedben, on 10/12/2007, -10/+355for the record... "Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), which is not affiliated with any national Baptist organization"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+253Yeah, they're a fringe fundamentalist group that's been protesting Iraq war vet funerals. They're a bunch of nutjobs.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+219Their site is built with FrontPage. I'm sure someone here can hack it.
- Cossa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+178~PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU HATE THE WBC AS MUCH AS I DO...I THINK THIS IS THE BEST "SOLUTION" TO THEIR EVIL WAYS~
The catch here is that even this Digg article "supports" the WBC by giving them even more negative publicity (which of course, they thrive on).
I was contemplating the best approach to fight these vile, evil, people...and what I discovered is, there is a really great organization out there, already doing it. They're called the Patriot Guard Riders. And what they do is (upon request), they bring American flags, and their motorcycles---in large numbers, to a soldier's funeral or wherever the WBC happens to be spewing their filthy evil rhetoric. Then, they circle the (usually few) WBC members and sing patriotic songs, hide them with their flags, and fire up their motorcycles. Effectively voiding out the very presence of Phelps and the gang.
If you (like me) absolutely HATE the WBC...then we should support these people. I registered on their website (which I think has 70,000+ members). I don't own a motorcycle, but I would support the "Riders" in any way possible. I think they're doing a great thing.
Most importantly...we should STOP providing the WBC with even more publicity. They love the negative attention (obviously).
http://www.patriotguard.org/ - WarpFox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+143They arent nuts. It's about money. The church is 98% of his own family. They piss people off and then make beaucoup dollars on the assault lawsuits.
Kinda like scientology. - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -13/+150The next time some nutjob decides he wants to kill a bunch of people and then himself, I wish he'd head over to Westboro to do it instead of killing decent people.
- eggo, on 10/12/2007, -29/+152Diggers like to bitch and moan about Freedom of speech, freedom of religion. I guess that all goes out the window when we you disagree with the speech, huh? ***** hypocrites.
"I disagree with what you say, but I will defend, until death, your right to say it."
-Voltaire
Popular Speech doesn't need protection. - eclipse492, on 10/12/2007, -2/+105Just adding to what's above. the digg effect should take a new meaning on these clowns. Dont hate christianity or other churches. westboro is a damn cult.
- jspegele, on 10/12/2007, -2/+88"Cho Seung-Hui . . . was sent by God to punish those he killed . . . Cho is also in hell for violating God’s commandment to not kill."
WTF, do these people really believe their own *****? - pjkli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+87"In the wake of the tragic Amish school house shooting, members of Westboro Baptist Church planned on picketing the funerals of the five girls killed in the shooting. Their signs were going to call the girls "whores" and that they are "burning in hell". In an attempt to stop them, news radio personality/host Mike Gallagher attempted to dissuade them. After first rejecting a monetary offer, Gallagher offered them an hour of unrestricted airtime on his show. WBC accepted, and the picket was called off.[33] On October 5, 2006, members of WBC were "hosts" of the Mike Gallagher's radio show, with Gallagher giving periodic warnings to viewers that they (the members of WBC) did not represent the views of him or the station."
Taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westboro_Baptist_Church
I think Mike Gallagher should get a medal for what he did for the Amish families. I also think that somebody else like hime should stand up to phelps and his followers. I think this has Waco written all over it. - eclipse492, on 10/12/2007, -7/+85Also, sorry about the typo on WESTBORO.. submitted in a hurry.
- aloser, on 10/12/2007, -7/+83They have a right to say whatever they want.. but harassment of mourning families is not the same as free speech.
- ja1217, on 10/12/2007, -2/+74@kevin45
No need to hack the site. GoDaddy has already suspended their account (godhatesamerica.com) :) - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -2/+73Short of burning their organization to the ground and lopping off their heads, what are we supposed to do that's an effective means of control? Any sort of attention that we give them will empower them and put a spotlight on them.
What we need to do is ignore them, because they're ***** sociopaths. The best you could hope for is to call CPS on them for the way they might be brainwashing their children. Maybe that will keep their organization from growing into an orgy of hate-mongering. - shieldsmw, on 10/12/2007, -16/+85I've been meaning to learn how to hack websites. I finally have the motivation I need.
- EatingPie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+62Without a SPECIFIC protest in mind, the suggestion to "take on the westboro baptist church" is too open-ended, and I think somewhat irresponsible. Anything confrontational or in-person would be an absolutely terrible idea for tons of reasons.
Are there valid suggestions? A mass e-mailing? An anti-westboro site? Letters of support and condolenses to the troops' families who've had to deal with these people?
-Pie - emildew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+55There was a group whose URL I can't find now who constructed enormous angel wings and would go stand in front of the line of Westboro protestors so that the families at funerals couldn't see them or their hateful signs.
I love LOVE that.
@eggers: "Diggers like to bitch and moan about Freedom of speech, freedom of religion. I guess that all goes out the window when we you disagree with the speech, huh?"
What, because we openly disagree? I didn't see where anyone was calling for that speech to made illegal. Countering with one's own opinion and being completely void of respect for a bigoted and hateful opinion doesn't mean one is against free speech.
Free means free of government regulation, not free of consequences. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+55http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westboro_Baptist_Church
Read quick before its edited......... - liminaldust, on 10/12/2007, -3/+45if you guys haven't watched the documentary on them, do yourself a favor and find it somewhere like youtube, anywhere
you'll be disgusted but also having a hell of a laugh as people throw stuff and swear at them from their cars - dn11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+40"Diggers like to bitch and moan about Freedom of speech, freedom of religion. I guess that all goes out the window when we you disagree with the speech, huh? ***** hypocrites".
No you've got it wrong - free speech goes both ways. They have been free to say what they want for years - and everyone in this country is free to respond to them. - TankRamp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39In response to people concerned about free speech:
Free speech allows them to protest whatever they want for whatever reasons they want. Free speech also allows us to counter-protest. - jobenly, on 10/12/2007, -16/+50"The next time some nutjob decides he wants to kill a bunch of people and then himself, I wish he'd head over to Westboro to do it instead of killing decent people."
I don't think anyone thinks WBC is anything short of despicable, but murder is a bit much, isn't it? You know, there are kids that go to that church. - jspegele, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36@eggo and ronpaul
This is hardly about their freedom of speech. I doubt that most of us what care what their message was if all they were doing was speaking their message, but when they began protesting the funerals of soldiers killed in the line of duty and now protesting the funerals of the MURDERED Va Tech students, they crossed a line. - Gryffydd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28@ABadInAlbany
Did it ever occur to you that a site running the FrontPage extensions would be exactly what you're describing? - converge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Truly disgusting.
- Sippi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22How about diggers start their own protest praising/mourning the VT students at the same spot and time as these nutjobs. If there are enough people we can drown out the 15-20 of these idiots.
- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22I think in this case, it's less of the religion and more of the people protesting. Crap on a crust, they're just so...stupid.
- cheezedaze, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25If there are enough Diggers in the Va area, they should stage a fake funeral of a Homosexual male - publicize the hell out of it - and get tons of people to go to this "fake" funeral to draw these protesters away so real funerals can take place in peace. I'm not sure if it could be done, but it would be worth a shot.
- Pilot85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20So... God sent Cho Seung-Hui to do his work, and then cast him to hell for murdering??
Yeah, that makes about as much sense as anything else coming outta Westboro.
*****. - aspec, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22These people are already getting threated and shot at. I'm not sure what you all think you're going to do, but there is nothing scarier than someone that believes they are doing right by god.
- BrewBeau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19This isn't about free speech. The WBC appearing on talk shows is free speech. But them showing up at a funeral is like them standing out on the street in the middle of the night screaming and waking everyone up. It's a public disturbance.
- Scaryclouds, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24Religion isn't the problem, these people are. If we had no religion, then they would likely find some other tool to spread their hate. The only reason why people believe religion leads to nut jobs more than other things is because so much of the world is religious.
Lets not forget that Hitler and Stalin either did not practice any major religion or were atheists. So a person can be sadistic no matter what their religious views. - huckmank, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Agreed. They're voices in the wilderness. Let's keep them there.
- DivisibleByZero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18In Tech's case, I think it'd be pretty cool if the Corps of Cadets did what the Patriot Guard usually does. Would be a more meaningful symbol if Hokies were giving the support, and would blend in much better than a bunch of motorcycles.
- trilobite, on 10/12/2007, -8/+24Personally I think we should all ignore them. They appear to be like children who act up because they crave attention. The best way to address this is by not rising to the bait.
- Pokez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I dunno, that kinda sounds like one of those parents in restaurants that do nothing as their child screams, cries, throws things, etc.. Whereas in a private situation yes, ignoring them is okay but in a public setting they need to be taught how to behave, or they need to be removed from the situation in order to prevent them from disturbing others.
I think it applies here, if these guys are just setting up camp in washington and whatnot let them have at it and pay them no attention. But here, they are disrupting the friends and family of those who were slain at VT. Unfortunately these children are adults who cant just be smacked on the hand or taken out of the room. Something else needs to be done, they have no right disrupting funerals. - ja1217, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15ahhhh, stupid edit time.
According to Wikipedia, GoDaddy had suspended their account for reasons of "spam and abuse". However the site seems to be back up. - thatsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Westboro Baptist Church

It's about an hour drive for me. - matth1jd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11From the article: "Cho Seung-Hui, the Virginia Tech student responsible for the killings who took his own life after the shootings, was sent by God to punish those he killed, and America as a whole, for moral decline, said Phelps-Roper, while adding that she believes Cho is also in hell for violating God’s commandment to not kill.
'He is in hell,' Phelps-Roper said. 'But he was also fulfilling the word of God.'"
Wow am I confused - so he was doing God's will but God sent him to hell for it? Earlier in the article is this quote:
"Shirley Phelps-Roper, said the Virginia Tech teachers and students who died on Monday brought their fate upon themselves by not being true Christians.
'The evidence is they were not Christian. God does not do that to his servants,' Phelps-Roper said. 'You don’t need to look any further for evidence those people are in hell.'"
Nice logic... - unicronband, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13www.godhatesfredphelps.com anyone?
- LesterKing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Wow, you're completely insane.
- nilicule, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11From their website:
The question has already arisen, “Will the Patriot Guard Riders attend services if invited?”
Some of the victims in this tragedy were members of the Virginia Tech ROTC program. If we are invited by their families, as an organization we will accept these missions and do whatever we can. However, some of the victims were not involved in the military. For those, the Patriot Guard Riders – as an organization – will not be involved. - PopcornDave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@dclowd9901
Perhaps the best defense is a good offense. I'm sure that the Harley riders that show up at military funerals to drown these ***** out would be more than happy to help out once again. And as an added benefit, maybe someone could parade up and down on the street where the church is in a devil suit. You can't ban somebody from walking on the sidewalk can you? - phatt-matt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10They are not a fundamentalist group. Fundamentalism refers to groups that adhere to the most basic or fundamental doctrines of a religion. This is a cult.
- rekrapt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Did you not take your meds today?
- Jackosx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10These people don't give out a telephone number, i wonder why...
http://www.godhatesfags.com/main/contact.html - korbink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9We had them show up here in Pasco, WA and they effectively blocked out the WBC. The local support here was huge as well, we even had firetrucks with their ladders extended which held up the biggest American Flag I've ever seen in person, which was conveniently placed to block out the protestors.
- Egoist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The title of this article in the RSS feed is, "Calling on all diggers. Time to take on the wetb". I thought this was going to be an article about illegal immigration.
- Baptista, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The last time WBC was on Digg everyone downloaded the largest file that we could find on their server. If anything we can at least cost them some $$$ on bandwidth.
- Valence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9No, no, no, no, no ... Don't give these people any more publicity, don't give them more attention. They THRIVE on this, they believe they deserve negative attention from the surrounding immoral cultural and they, more or less, will remain mostly unaffected by any attempt to legally fight them. Just ignore them, for everyone's sake, completely ignore them -- it's the one thing they can't cope with.
Besides, what are you going to legally do? Even if you did manage to silence these people, there will be some other groupd of whacked crackpots waiting to speak up. The US has freedom of speech. Let them exercise their rights, let's all respect their rights, even if you disagree with them, and also exercise your own right to completely, utterly ignore them. -
