- mariska, on 10/10/2007, -10/+82Boy they really are running scared. I had no idea how weak some of these republicans are. Only three have the courage to speak without a script - Paul, McCain, and Thompson? That is so sad. If you can't speak with an unscripted, unrehearsed answer, maybe you shouldn't be leading our country.
- rhabd0mancer, on 10/10/2007, -12/+51Sounds like the republicans are a bunch of pussies.
Of course we already knew that. - roguetrick, on 10/10/2007, -6/+41A true fox viewer, pulling numbers out of nowhere!
- Acewrap, on 10/10/2007, -9/+39It's different because Fox is the propaganda wing of the republican party. YouTube is normal citizens asking questions.
- cougar618, on 10/10/2007, -7/+33Fox shot itself in the foot when they repeatedly painted the picture of Obama being related to Osama, and doing similar things to the other canidates. CNN doesn't make guilani out to be a terrorist, they don't run 30 minute peices slandering Romney's belief, and they don't try to link Ron Paul to Bush.
Thats how CNN is different than Fox. IMHO, CNN isn't the greatest news source in the US, but its nowhere near the worst. - adrianpn, on 10/10/2007, -22/+48They're scared because one of the first comments Anderson is going to say is "Well we received an overwhelming amount of videos for Ron Paul....about 60%" lol Ron Paul is the true Republican Front Runner. Mainstream media just doesn't know it yet.
- nixr, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26“I think the presidency ought to be held at a higher level than having to answer questions from a snowman,” - Mitt Romney
He says "snowman" but what he means is "real person". - Stochio, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22I have never made a video or posted anything to youTube in the past. My first video will be made for the Republican youTube debate. I've already got a great question planned.
- edstate, on 10/10/2007, -6/+23Am I the only one that thought this format was ***** silly? ...I guess so. That said, I like the idea of citizen-contributed questions. And I think the Rep candidates should've been honest about why they didn't want to do it, as opposed to the 'ol "I've got other plans" excuse.
- Depthfunction, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18I think CNN should hold the debate, and if only three candidates show up, then those three candidates will get a lot of airtime, and it will only make the candidates who skip look like they have something to hide.
- TGMD, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Me too:
What the *****!? - johnhummel, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Brit Hume. Most fair anchor in all of news.
I hate to be contradictory, but what the hell have you been smoking? The Democrats could have appeared on Fox news, the cable channel that asks if Democrats are Traitors? or Did Obama attend an extemist Madrassa?
Or, they could have said "You know, we *don't* want to be on the Republican Propoganda channel". Which is pretty much what they did. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -9/+21Too bad the candidates didn't just go out and say "we dont want to be a part of this cheap gimmick". I sure as hell wouldn't want anything to do with a youtube debate after seeing the Democrat one.
- Chunken, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16It's very different. If you don't think there is a difference between average Americans and Hardcore Republicans then you have problems. The reason the Dem's won't go on Fox is because Fox will be hostile towards the candidates.
It would go something like this:
Fox: The economy is starting to crumble because people are scared that a democrat will win. Why don't you guys just quit and let the good party win?
Any Candidate: What? That doesn't make sense...
Fox: SHUT UP!! CUT HIS MIC! CUT HIS MIC! I'm sorry but I'm not going to let you slander the republican party like that.
Fox: OK next question, so you guys think we should cut and run and let the terrorists win? You think we should invite them to the US to blow more people up?
Any Candidate: No that's not what were saying we....
Fox: You SHUT UP!!! Remove him from this debate!!!!! I'm sorry but this is a civilized debate we don't want to hear your crazy conspiracy theories. - PaulLev, on 10/10/2007, -8/+19How is this different? Should be obvious: Fox was just another debate. CNN/YouTube is a radically new form of debating.
- Chordonblue, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12At least one of them did. I believe Guliani said something about being asked questions by a snowman is hardly the right format for a presidential candidate. while I enjoyed most of the YouTube debate I have to agree that that was a little over the top.
- patricklynch, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12While I agree that the format is silly, there were some good questions at the Democratic debate. The only real problem I have is that there aren't followups and that a candidate isn't nailed to a wall for trying to dodge a question.
- Wonkanobi, on 10/10/2007, -8/+17It's completely different. The Dems don't want to give creedence to the ***** journalism that is Fox News. Faux News gives 'em an unfair shake all the time, so why the hell should they just bend over again and take it at Faux New's request? It's like the shady car mechanic screwing you over and then asking that you come back in and help shoot a commercial for their shop.
- Synn, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13You're right...WE are electing a president so WE should be able to ask them questions. It's ridiculous that the people who do the voting have the least interaction with the candidates.
- duckfigg, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11the current president can't speak even WITH a script..........
- jmpeagle, on 10/10/2007, -12/+21the question is...how will the Democrats manage to screw themselves over this time?
- utsav007, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12I cannot believe Mitt Romney cannot see past the snowman and hear his perfectly good question. Where is his sense of humor? And, more importantly, how might he deal with environmental issues?
- TheRedNewt, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Seriously? This could have been accomplished with email questions or any other form of communication. The YouTube portion added a "silliness" factor, which even made some of the Democratic candidates annoyed. I'm not sure the Democrats would do it again knowing what kind of questions would be aired. Sure, there were a couple important question, but the focus has been on the distractions the format presented like the snowman. People are focused more on the gimmick part of his video than the question.
I hope I just missed your sarcasm. - Pake, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12"Are you black enough?" isn't really a question that creates debating.
- niner9, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12Republicans blowing off young voters again.
YouTube 2007 = MTV 1992
Back then Bill Clinton went on MTV (which was the most popular media for the young voter back then) for an open forum with an auditorium full of young voters. George Bush Sr. did not. I think there is a quote from him out there somewhere saying that he didn't need to go on MTV. The Result.... Clinton crushed him. - TheRedNewt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8That's a sure fire way to win an election: appeal only to the partisan members of your party.
- Pake, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Very true. Half of the questions had the potential to be good, but the other half were just retarded. What type of question is "Are you black enough?"
- dagamer34, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12I want a Democrat vs. Republican free-for-all with a bunch of character assasination attacks. That would make for good political theater. Not to mention, candidates would have to respond to each other because dodging personal attacks on national TV looks pathetic.
Also, I hate candidates who take the high road. As if they don't all secretly covet beating all the other candidates for the nomination and also the White House. Here's lookin at you Edwards. You were just mad that no one thinks your a threat! - Botanicus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I dont think its 'calling a bluff' but since the last Digg report i saw said 2 people had signed on for it... and now we have 3, it shows to me that the GoP isnt ENTIRELY afraid of youtube as digg likes to claim.
- dsanonline, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11Personally I thought the CNN Youtube debate was a huge milestone. It was the first time something like that has ever been done. Yes, it had it's kinks. However as with everything new, it doesn't always turn out quite as good as it was originally hoped. CNN/Youtube will eventually 'perfect' the format and it'll end well.
You need to realize that my generation is now old enough to vote. As such, this election is OUR election. My generation strongly believes there is something seriously wrong with this country. From the laws to the way the Government has been functioning. A major overhaul is needed and it's great to see CNN/Youtube working to support this.
Up until now... when have the Presidential candidates actually answered questions from the people? When was the last time they were prodded with questions without having a pre-scripted answer? We, the people... we elect our President. They have a responsibility to answer to us. To take our criticism. To answer our questions. They represent us. They do what WE, the PEOPLE, say. Not what they want to. I think that's a place where the older generations failed. They didn't make that CLEAR. The older generations (baby boomer generation included) screwed this country up and allowed the Government to get away with too much. Now that we're cleaning up the mess and changing how politics are handled... you dare call it a waste of time? Die, already. FFS.
I look forward to the Republican YouTube debate. They can't escape it. Oh yes, they're trying to. However if they don't do it... they're definitely going to lose the election. And this wont be the only time you see this. I guarantee that this will type of thing will be used in every election from here on out. It won't be long before you start seeing these things for members of Congress and the Senate. Because WE the PEOPLE elect them to. They are there to do WHAT WE SAY because this is a democracy. As long as 51% of the people in this country supports something... the Government has absolutely no say. Those of you that believe I am wrong as complete idiots in my opinion and should leave this country. Or at least have your voting rights stripped away. - Chunken, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I don't like either party, but I'm smart enough to know that Fox News is a propaganda network for the republican party. They are more biased than any other channel on tv.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Not that I'm a fan of the Dems, but at least they said straight out that they didn't want to take part in Faox News *****. Mutt and Julie-Annie, are pussy footing around and making up ***** excuses. Scheduling conflicts with TWO MONTHS advance notice??? *****.
- Pake, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Republicans don't tend to watch CNN, ABC, or MSNBC, but they still go on them
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -9/+14Why should the candidates be expected to attend this three ring circus of a debate? I would've been embarassed if I was any one of those Democratic candidates at the Youtube debate.
- siszam, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Bull. I'm in my forties and I use youtube daily. There are many people much older than me who do. Don't just make things up. The people running for president are suppose to be by the people, for the people. That is why they should show up any and every time the people ask them to. They want our approval. Not the other way around. They are suppose to do what we tell them. You've been under Bush so long you've forgotten that haven't you?
- tomesnyder, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6If the younger generation turns out for the '08 election it will be a refreshing change. We'll see.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Brit Hume is a very fair anchor. UCLA actually did a study of dozens of different news outlets, and found that "Special Report with Brit Hume" was one of the fairest.
- lokai, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Hmm. Possibly this YouTube debate would encourage the younger generation to get more involved in what is going on with their country's future? Perhaps some of them might have good questions to ask, and a lot of them might actually learn something? Just stabbing in the dark here; this could be a good thing... It shouldn't be knocked until it has been tried.
- tomesnyder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Seriously, how do you think a Clinton-Paul election would turn out?
- ATHEISTinHELL, on 10/10/2007, -7/+11These debates are *****. They ask them crappy ass questions. I mean how presidential is it to raise your after a question is asked? Or how the are only given 30 seconds to respond. How can you address the real problems with stupid rules like that? Granted the Youtube one is a little different. I know most of the videos would be towards Ron Paul (given him the attention he deserves) but they will probably filtered out by CNN.
- scampercom, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5"Debate"? You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. I have yet to see any debate. Sit them around a table and let them go at it with no interruptions, talking over each other, raising their voices -- I'd love to see that: some passion, some truth.
Or just ask candidates questions and let them blather on for 60 seconds. I guess that's easier. They're all bought and paid for anyway. (Well, except for two of them.) - archlich, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7New fangled computers gosh darnit. They should have sent questions via telegraph!
- villainousT, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7It's pretty pathetic that these guys would so blatantly sidestep this debate because they know they'd look like fools. I think it's even more telling of the atmosphere of politics in this country today. Politicians care less and less about their constituents and they feel they can do whatever the hell they please and we'll just have to deal with it. I hope 2008 can usher in a new era for America, but maybe I'm just being naive.
- FredoBerfil, on 10/10/2007, -7/+11"Flipper" Romney and Ghoul-iani are cowards.
My guess is Romney doesn't want to face direct questioning from a Youtube audience because he has trouble remembering what his actual position is on the issues on a week-by-week basis, and outside a scripted format he'd completely forget. Guliani doesn't want to do it because he'd probably have to face questions that he can't credibly answer by cawing "9-11, 9-11" over and over again. - iplayyouandme, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I voted for Perot and I was a democrat. He got votes from both parties.
- jasonkolb, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Me three. I think people are really going to be shocked when they see the amount and intensity of support behind Ron Paul. I see the situation coming to a head because I don't think anyone besides the People want to see Paul elected, which could lead to an interesting situation come voting time.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6If they want to learn, they can learn. If they need politics dumbed down even more than it already is with this cheap gimmick, then maybe they shouldn't be voting anyways.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5LOL!
- jedikv, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Questions are not hand picked or pre-determined in a town hall debate.
- FredoBerfil, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Ohhhh.... but it's *undignified.* Can't have that.
