CAIR Can Not Be Allowed to Control American Speech
mobyrebuttal.blogspot.com — CAIR's (Council of American Islamic Relations)last three "action alerts" all concern radio talk show host Michael Savage and a push to get him taken off the air. Whether you love Savage or hate him, this can not go unnoticed. This group with blatant and documented terror ties can not cloak the blatant goal to squash free speech........>>

- MadKennyP, on 11/11/2007, -9/+8Is it OK for the Parents Television Council to do similar letter writing campaigns if they don't agree with the "morals" of a television broadcast? Perhaps the PTC should also be addressed. Their blatant goal to squash free speech cannot go unnoticed.
- thotpoizn, on 11/11/2007, -0/+12I think it's more than a little ironic that CAIR would play the "hate speech" card. You know damned well that if there were a story with the line: "Even the rocks and the trees will say, 'Hey white man, there is a black man hiding behind me! Come and kill him!'" - such a book would be banned from every library, bookstores would refuse to carry it, those which did carry would get picketed and protested, etc. But replace "white man" with muslim and "black man" with jew, and it becomes part of The Hadith, taught along with the Koran as an important part of the muslim tradition. My problem with this religion is not that all muslims are militant extremists, I know that's simply not true. No, my problem is that by any sane interpretation of their holy writings and teachings, every *devout* muslim must be. That fact seems lost on a lot of people who don't bother to actually study these teachings for themselves, and instead rely on their favorite sound bites to interpret for them. Don't believe the hype, people - not from muslim apologists who would insist that Islam is all peace and love and light, not from Mike Savage or others who would demonize them - hell, not even from me. Look into it for yourself, and make up your own mind; the Koran and The Hadith are readily available for your perusal.

- ashok, on 11/12/2007, -1/+13I think Savage's rant was over the top, way over the top. I can see myself being a Muslim and being scared because of that - that's more than hate speech, that's perilously close to being a call to attack Muslims. I hate CAIR and wish they would go away, but Savage's rant might not be defensible even in a time of war. That Iraqi army working with our troops now and the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan - those guys are Muslim too: I can't imagine that they're dying helping us fight the Taliban and al-Qaeda so we can say bad things about the Quran.
That having been said, I'm voting this up and voting commentators up because free speech and well-thought out speech go hand-in-hand, and I know this thread will be civil and thoughtful and excellent.- readwriteblue, on 11/12/2007, -0/+10While there is life there can be hope..
- Iconoclast25, on 11/11/2007, -1/+7While I concur Savage can - and did in this instance - go past the limits of civil discourse, any reservations I have are tempered by two factors. First, the target: CAIR **has** been linked to terrorist enabling organizations if not the front line actors themselves, just as Savage states. I'd be a LOT more sympathetic if the ones complaining were actively denouncing the jihadis. The problem is . . . "moderate" islamic figures seem more inclined to claim islam to be "the religion of peace" than to do or say much about the crazies. My reading of the forces fighting with us in the Middle East is that they are primarily nationalists and not overly fond of the foreign-born terrorists trying to take over their nations.
The second reason is the underlying justification of the jihadis which, again, "moderate" muslims do not disavow, i.e., that as infidels we have three choices: convert, submit to a second class existence only slightly better than slavery or die. Sorry, I prefer option 4: fight back and win.
Basically, I don't see much evidence of "moderation" nor much evidence supporting the claim of islam being a "religion of peace," so I can't really disagree with the underlying substance of Savage's comments although his wording is, as usual, almost as extreme as those he condemns.
- BECoole, on 11/12/2007, -2/+8CAIR doesn't need to control our speech. Arab oil money is doing quite well with that.
- lgfaphile, on 11/19/2007, -1/+8CAIR is one of a host of front groups for radical Islam, which has learned the language of victimhood rather rapidly. They understand very well how to use the democratic West against itself.
- cathode, on 12/01/2007, -0/+3What the heck happened to free speech? This concept of "hate speech" is moronic and is an attempt at Orwellian thought control. You can never stop people from hating - it's human nature (not the best part, admittedly.) Why should anyone be forced to like something... especially something as evil and as despicable as CAIR.
Go Michael.
