- Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+69I'm not surprised, but I'm appalled.
Destroying the transparency of government and whipping government science organizations like the NOAA and EPA to toe the party line on science issues (e.g. if you got NOAA's homepage you'll find that they claim global warming is known to be a natural event caused entirely by influx of solar radiation, and when was the last time you heard the EPA take a fight with the government or big business?) may be less sexy than gutting the constitution, but I fear it's longer lasting.
Even if the next president is a democrat, are the democrats really going to say "let's reinstate the independence of science organizations which frequently annoy the government, and let's make government more transparent again so people can see if we do anything wrong!"? I doubt it.
I worry that the Bush administration has done irreparable harm to the US. He's intentionally poisoning the well just to protect his own ass.
OK, now I agree with the people who say Bush is the worst president ever. If I could swap Bush for any other president, including Nixon, I would. - InetRoadkill, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40It's not fair to use the comment made by Hillary (and many other congressmen on both sides of the fence) about Saddam's alleged WMDs as some of proof that we needed to go to war. I'm no fan of Hillary, but to be fair, she made that comment based on information provided to congress by the whitehouse. Congress does not enjoy the same level of access to intelligence data that the whitehouse does. The whitehouse only provides what information it sees fit to release. In this case, the information was all one-sided, manipulated, and cherry picked. Conflicting intelligence was deliberately omitted to make the case for war look stronger than it really was.
When you only provide partial data to promote your position while actively hiding data that refutes your position, you're committing a "Lie through omission." Bush lied by purposely omitting data that showed just how weak his cause for war really was. - cdlavalle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36These are the known unknowns. This makes me wonder about the unknown unknowns.
- CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30This is bad news for everyone.
- evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Newsflash - not everyone who complains about Bush stealing American freedoms, needlessly walking American soldiers into the grinder, and generally doing his best to run a once-great nation-state into the ground is a liberal.

Woops. - esaun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21* In March 2006, the Department of Health and Human Services took down a six-year-old Web site devoted to substance abuse and treatment information for gays and lesbians, after members of the conservative Family Research Council complained.
This stuff still happens? Are we serious? I mean, I'm all about being conservative, but not when it hinders public information. - evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21You're laboring under the assumption that the reported election results were representative of the actual voting that occurred.
- MalaysianMafia, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22breaking news! the Bush administration is corrupt! sound the alarms!
...
duh. - hehe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19"I worry that the Bush administration has done irreparable harm to the US"
I also worry that the Bush administration is taking us to a point beyond no return. However, an outraged country can work together to undo some of what he's done. It's important that what Bush has done become common knowledge, and that we elect legislatures and future presidents that can undo some of his rule changes...maybe even release his presidential records. - TheWhyOfFry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15"* In March 2006, the Department of Health and Human Services took down a six-year-old Web site devoted to substance abuse and treatment information for gays and lesbians, after members of the conservative Family Research Council complained."
Compassion at it's finest! Go, culture of life, go! - sirloin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12please post the rebutals
while i do agree that sometimes there are good reasons for discontinuing things, I really would like to get the balanced perspective. So if you could find a reason for these changes, I am quite sure many on digg would appreciate it.
Especially the one that classified attacks on americans in iraq, that really bothers me..
ANd ps it isnt just the libs wearing bush bashing colored glasses... you really should check the polls, unless you think conservatives only comprise 30% of the country. Conservatives everywhere are running from bush like the plague.
Instead of saying it has been debunked.. how about prove it... link.
I could easily say it has been proven that bush and condi are having an affair... would any of you belive me without proof? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Don't be a dumbass. They're good reasons to classify information but this administration has been known to shut down any dissenters. Most Environmental, global warming, sex-education etc. research has been shut down or de-funded by this administration alone due to politics and not sound science or even good policy. For a non liberal issue; How long was the report on China's Military Buildup or Monetary Manipulation delayed? Months to years! This does not include some reports that was doctored or 'classified' for their own political reasons.
- InetRoadkill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12The Family Research Council makes the Taliban look rational. That's one group that needs to die in a fire.
- pbailey, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Well, you guys keep voting for him, what does that say ? He would have been turfed in any other country in the world after his first four disastrous years. I remember the day he was re-elected. I was in shock that the American people could actually be that blind.
Sorry, but its true. - DyDx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'm pretty sure there is ample evidence that the Administration knew full-well their reasons for invading Iraq were flimsy at best...
In fact, read this: http://www.inthesetimes.com/site/main/article/they_knew_0802/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9How is this good for the Dems?
This actually might go the other way for them. If the Democrats can hang onto a majority in Congress and manage to take the Presidency in '08, I had better see them issue declassiffications, policy changes and rollbacks in executive powers, or I'll condemn them in the same breath I condemn this administration. I believe the lasting damage this administration has done to the governmental structures of this country is much more subtle than you seem to believe and it will be felt for generations.
Democrats better step to the plate. If they can't find someone strong enough to become president and voluntarily weaken the executive branch, I won't be satisfied. We need a new Cincinnatus. - zeero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8we didn't vote for him (not everyone on here).. his win came from hacked voting machines and skewed poll results.
- charlief, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10You have to wonder why these documents are being classified. What the Bush administration is doing right now is (most likely) illegal and classifying those reports to ensure their security...not ours. It's unfortunate that things turned this way over the past few years and makes me fearful for the future. Is Bush going to declare marshal law and try to be supreme ruler and attempt to "rule" for more years than his term is given? I myself can't say but I can say I do hope things do turn around for the better. So far, we're not looking into a bright future and I think that better decisions needs to be made. Otherwise things are going to turn out darker than we anticipated.
- jaycliche, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"Bush is a moron with stupid staff that make countless blunders and he gets re-elected. "
I don't think they are blunders...more like plunders. - drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11@thcobbs
There is no way you read the same article as us. I'm starting to buy into this intelligent design thing just because it seems reasonable to think that God would of produced a bunch of ignorant morons for the intellectual and himself to laugh at. - cherrick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9That's because he ran his platform on religious fundamentalism, not public policy.
- LividBlivet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Because if the Family Research Council complains it MUST be important.
Asswipes the lot of them. - AdamalNZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Clinton runs the country well, but gets a BJ and he's threatened to be impeached and kicked out, Bush is a moron with stupid staff that make countless blunders and he gets re-elected.
His decisions seem to affect the rest of the world in a negative way. I'll be glad when his term is up. - schlurp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8They don't want to limit government. Government spending has grown at insane rates during the Bush admin. They just throw all the money at the oil, car and defense industry and religious nuts instead of social programs or research. Then when they are done with government they or their families get repaid bigtime for all the no-bid contracts they were handing out - guess how Cheney made his fortune for instance.
They piss away trillions of taxpayer dollars and get hundredthousands of completely innocent people killed to get a few dozen millions in their own pockets.
The scale of corruption in the US is truly mindboggling. Even more mindboggling is the number of brainwashed sheep that defend these criminals with a ridiculous amount of passion. I mean Bush is a spoiled brat with an alcohol damaged brain who got everything he ever "achieved" in his life (school, university, firm, governor, president - everything) stuffed up his ass with a golden spoon by his family money and connections. How some nitwits defend him like he is the greatest human being ever is just beyond me, even taking into consideration that basically all of the US media is just a giant right-wing brainwashing machine. - Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@ton0r -- America is a bad representation of Bush voters, in case you haven't read his approval ratings.
- dime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6He who controls the present, controls the past.
He who controls the past, controls the future. - Cytos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This should worry everyone, liberal or conservative. Withholding information is nothing new, I'm sure most governments have a go at it, but this looks a lot more systematic and worrying. Burying information and about environment, current attacks on US soldiers in Iraq doesn't seem like it could benefit *any* voters. Digg Digg
- IslandDog, on 10/12/2007, -18/+23"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including Al Qaeda members, though there is apparently no evidence of his involvement in the terrible events of September 11, 2001. It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons. Should he succeed in that endeavor, he could alter the political and security landscape of the Middle East, which as we know all too well affects American security."

I think it's cool that you looked into some of the allegations. One thing I wanted to point out though is are we SURE that those numbers have been published at all? I'm sure we'd all like to see them. The reason I ask is because the website for the National Counter-terrorism Center is down, and only a Google cache is showing up.

I have to wonder if the added bureaucracy was just an effort to obscure the data. Could you please comment? - CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You laugh, but its true. There have been stupid presidents before (literally stupid), but they weren't perceived this way becuase they were surrounded by a very intelligent staff. Clinton on the other hand was a Rhodes Scholar, which is probably why he was about to talk his way out of anything (bush can barely speak english becuase he's such a jackass).

on the other hand, you have to be careful, because sometimes even when Georgie says something, that doesn't mean its NOT true... - tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8"Well, you guys keep voting for him,"
Digg is a bad representation of 'Bush Voters', incase you havent noticed. - spinchange, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Given the track record, a healthly dose of skepticism is in order.

How much do you want to bet that the National Counterterrorism Agency isn't required by law to report to Congress? I'll bet that the law that requires the State Department to report also lays out what kind of statistics Congress wants to see... Is anything putting requirements on the NCA report?
10 bucks says no, because they're a brand new agency, aren't they... - SelfAbortion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know that's English you're speaking, and the words - they are arranged in patterns that look like sentences. Yet all attempts to derive meaning from them are futile.

Posting a rough draft of how to build a nuke was probably an honest mistake and I think most people understand that. Just because people are mad that it was posted doesnt excuse the fact that this administration is methodically restricting helpful information that happens to threatens the Bush agenda.
You tell me which of these agencies has ever produced an iota of a national security threat.
And tell me what good it does to restrict these agencies from collecting data pertaining to its department and publicizing it.
Census Bureau
Bureau of Labor Statistics
Department of Education
National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration
Environmental Protection Agency
The U.S. Forest Service
Department of Health and Human Services - JohnnyZito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow, that list of agencies that haven't handed in reports or the reporting has been cut...
That's scary.
Why are we paying for all of that if we can't tell whether or not it works?
We need a publicly elected brain trust to advise the president. Not know-nothings with kinkos printed banners for every puff piece event. - SelfAbortion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You're a grade A moron
