- Nydas, on 10/11/2007, -21/+879My respect for Bruce just shot up a ton. Not that i had a lack of respect for him to begin with, i just like him that much more now.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/11/2007, -15/+498Oh yeah, and I bet Willis uses more than one square of toilet paper, too...
- theragu40, on 10/11/2007, -13/+387First we learn that he's one of us, then that he's not afraid to curse on national TV, and now this? I knew I liked Pulp Fiction for a reason!
- m00dc0ntr0l, on 10/11/2007, -17/+236So wait, should I not be listening to him now?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -42/+227is Bruce Willis saying "Have you heard anything useful come out of an actor's mouth lately?" ironic?
- Xandrake, on 10/11/2007, -17/+166 "Have you heard anything useful come out of an actor's mouth lately?"
I just did. - thcobbs, on 10/11/2007, -10/+132@frost
They are only digging him because they AGREE. Not because he is famous. - TRScheel, on 10/11/2007, -22/+113@nachobusiness
Probably because its true... when someone says something pro-republican they are attacked left and right, but when someone says something pro-democrat, they are praised (unless its entirely ridiculous, which goes without saying for both sides).
I just wish this whole country would stop being red or blue. You can be for some democrat ideals, and for some republican ideals, you dont have to be ENTIRELY for one side or the other, but it'd be hard to believe in our current environment. - Junkyarddawg, on 10/11/2007, -4/+90You're surely not suggesting it's... ironic to have a celebrity give his public political opinion on celebrities giving their political opinions in public, are you?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -12/+98My problem with Hollywood is what Susan Sarandon mentioned, "I don't get why people who disagree with me won't see my movies. That's stupid."
Well, DUH. If you piss people off, and they know they keep you in a high-profile lifestyle, the only way that those of us who don't have that pedestal to spout from will protest your views and thoughts through the only means many of us have. We don't watch your movies.
I believe that Celebrities are citizens too, however, like most rich people - I also believe that they have a skewed view of reality. There are so many that appear to be humanitarian, but their bleeding hearts cry often from the tops of their Beverly Hills mansions. - bytor4232, on 10/11/2007, -3/+68http://duggmirror.com/political_opinion/Bruce_Willis_Tells_Hollywood_To_Shut_Up/

--Chris Farley on SNL - Aggaman, on 10/11/2007, -10/+63Ronald Reagan was an actor.
/just saying - Spr0k3t, on 10/11/2007, -9/+62Jack Bauer once thought he was god... then Bruce Willis told him to shut the ***** up.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/11/2007, -16/+67"Ronald Reagan was an actor."
Ronald Reagan EARNED his position of authority, by being elected president of the Screen Actors Guild, then by being elected governor of California twice, and by being elected President twice. He didn't just spout off a bunch of political rhetoric and then run for cover like so many of these Hollywood-types do.
I would challenge Sheryl Crow and Barbara Streisand to run for political office, and see just how out of touch they really are with both common sense and mainstream America. - Carnivale, on 10/11/2007, -4/+54At least one celebrity can admit that their opinions should not be flashed on MSNBC/CNN/FOX as if they have some importance to the issue being discussed.
- OzvS, on 10/11/2007, -5/+41SuperMoses, are you being obtuse on purpose? Willis isn't saying that actors don't have the right to an opinion, after all everyone has that right. Don't you agree?
The point is we pay too much attention to the opinions of celebrities and many people take their word as gospel. This isn't right, and should not be the case, but celebrities are obviously entitled to their opinions like the rest of us, however wrong or misguided they may be on occasion. - catalysis, on 10/11/2007, -8/+43@SuperMoses
Why not just be happy that his opinion has been swayed? Why ridicule him for making the right choice now? You can change your mind about something without being a hypocrite. All you do with that attitude is make people reluctant to agree with you on anything. - BOFH2, on 10/11/2007, -9/+42I had someone tell me that celebs know more about the world because they travel more then the average person. I said sure they do, but they stay in $1000+ a night hotels and resorts or when on location in posh trailers with satellite dishes and catering. The photo ops you get to see are staged so that they can look like they love the world.
Thanks for saying it Bruce. - ratbear, on 10/11/2007, -12/+44If Bruce Willis, Richard Dawkins, and Joe Rogan got together, it would be like some unholy triumverate, with an instant army of 1,000,000 nerds ready to do their evil bidding.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -10/+41Bruce Willis got it right.
Being a rich and famous actor does not make you a fountain of wisdom.
Some years ago a Hollywood brat-packer went to Moscow where he saw acres and acres of monuments to the "Great Patriotic War"- Russia's contribution to the WWII. He said, "I didn't know that there was a war here."
Shocking ignorance from a Hollywood elite. - AJH16, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32I love the part about people not believing it was him on the forums he talked on.
- omatsei, on 10/11/2007, -4/+32@Junkyarddawg: And yet, I hear celebrities' opinions so much more than I hear the average Joe opinions... maybe it's because every time they open their mouth, it ends up on E! or CNN. Maybe they should stop and think "Gee, I have an opinion, but maybe my millions of fans don't give a ***** about it and only want to hear me talk about the movies I'm in"? If it goes for Tom Cruise and Scientology, then it goes for every other actor and their political views.
- Haroshia, on 10/11/2007, -8/+36"Now that I have your attention by saying something politically charged, be sure to see 'Live Free or Die Hard' coming soon to a theater near you"
- PepeGSay, on 10/11/2007, -4/+30pottersquash:
You and the rest of the people are making very poor straw man arguements. Bruce Willis says "Don't listen to actors opinions, they are just actors." I think we all, except maybe yourself, have the intelligence to realize he is speaking broadly about things outside acting. I would expect Bruce to be very informed about his own peers and the quality of their commentary on things outside acting. His statements are in fact not ironic. They are statements about one of the things actors are informed about, namely themselves and each other. - Vic333, on 10/11/2007, -1/+26If Sheryl Crow wants to use her finger to wipe her ass, that's her prerogative. I'm just not going to buy any used guitars from her.
- ophilye, on 10/11/2007, -10/+34Not to say he doesn't have a point.... but think of it this way:
We are paying entertainers WAY too ***** much. It has been said over & over again: if we paid teachers as much as we paid our entertainers (sports heroes, singers, actors, etc), then this country would not be on the permanent Stupid list.
So... if we are going to adore them & pay them too much, then the least they can do is give back to the community in SOME way. Not in the Lohan / Hilton / Spears kinda' way, but more opening schools, promoting the environment... SOMETHING that actually helps the community (and no, not politically either..) - TheProtested, on 10/11/2007, -7/+31no.
- atockcir, on 10/11/2007, -2/+24Reminds me of Dave Chapelle's bit about MTV calling Ja Rule for his thoughts on 9/11.
Help me Ja Rule! - ubuwalker31, on 10/11/2007, -8/+29People listen to what actors have to say because they are masters of communicating with the masses on an emotional and visceral level. The reason why any educated person should take whatever an actor says with a few grains of salt about politics or science or anything outside their field...is that these topics are outside their field of expertise!!! However, an actor, backed by experts in the field, who is trying to help spread the word about an issue, can be a powerful and credible tool for a group. Like any other source of information, you have to judge the validity and message of the source.
- montescue, on 10/11/2007, -6/+25Bruce seems to be a master at viral marketing.
- giggity22, on 10/11/2007, -4/+22I don't think anyone makes the argument that celebrities don't have freedom of speech rights. What most people object to is the arrogance they display when they use their publicity, gained from acting, to speak about political topics - something that is not in their domain of expertise. Compounding this is the fact that rich Hollywood celebrities have just about nothing in common with the average American, making their statements about things that affect us much more so than themselves all the more ridiculous. Celebrities should be more responsible and not misuse their fame to further their own agenda. (Unless of course that agenda has something to do with acting, which would be appropriate) Having a right to spread uninformed opinions through publicity does not make it the right thing to do.
- moisie, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20I'm just glad the Universe didn't explode/implode from the paradox.
- apophisitis, on 10/11/2007, -4/+21I believe the word you were looking for is, "don't".
- Aggaman, on 10/11/2007, -24/+40"Ronald Reagan EARNED his position of authority, by being elected president of the Screen Actors Guild, then by being elected governor of California twice, and by being elected President twice. He didn't just spout off a bunch of political rhetoric and then run for cover like so many of these Hollywood-types do."
If Reagan had not been a well-known actor, he would never have made it into proper politics. It's a mark of the decline of politics that we now have politicians who are media coached. Reagan was simply used to being in front of a camera, and so had an advantage. And Reagan was himself a master at presenting political rhetoric. Other than that, he was, as associates said, an "amiable dunce".
But it really doesn't matter who says something. We should look at what is said, not at who is saying it. Even Hitler had some good ideas. They don't suddenly become bad ideas just because Hitler said them. If people have to shut up because they are actors, where does it stop? Does Cindy Sheehan have to shut up because she is a housewife? Soon, everyone but approved people will be expected to keep quiet.
And it's no good saying that actors should restrain themselves. Why the ***** should they? If the media deems what you say newsworthy, that's not your fault. Obviously someone wants to listen to what Celebrity X has to say about the war in Iraq, or it wouldn't be reported at all. Frankly, I would prefer to see celebrities political opinions dominate the news rather than things like Paris Hilton getting plowed from behind while talking on a cell phone, or Britney shaving the wrong end of herself.
A lot of people who have the public ear don't make much sense. Not to speak ill of the dead, but Jerry Falwell made a career out of talking what I consider to be ***** about politics when he was essentially a preacher. Should he have had to restrain himself? Of course not. It's up to people to decide whether they agree with left wing celebrities or the Falwells of this world. We are grown ups and are perfectly able to filter out what we consider to be silly without requiring people to restrain themselves from expressing their views. - Junkyarddawg, on 10/11/2007, -22/+38No, opinions doesn't matter more if they come from a celebrity.
However, neither do they mean less. There is still freedom of speech in the US, well, mostly, anyway, and that includes the right for celebs to voice their opinion. - airship, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19Bruce Willis: "There are hundreds - thousands - of actors who are just as good as I am, and probably better."
How refreshingly modest, coming from an actor. And how true. - mlw72z, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18At least those guys chose to do something about it by going into politics. There's also Sonny Bono and Fred Grandy. I find it ironic that most of the celebrities who choose to hold office are republicans.
- daridave, on 10/11/2007, -9/+22"Maaaaaaaaatt Daaaaaaaaaaamon"
is pretty much what I think of hollywood actors.
Bruce Willis owns. I kind of also liked him when I heard he wasn'teven supposed to be in Grindhouse, but decided he wanted to appear in there just cuz he tought the movie was badass. That's saying a lot. - jdstorer2, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16@apophisitis: +1 for using a obscure firefly quote!
- KamikazeeDriver, on 10/11/2007, -8/+21"Have you heard anything useful come out of an actor's mouth lately?"
Yes i have, what bruce willis said in that article! - ripflash, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15I agree with him and will not listen to anything he says. :)
- Neuski, on 10/11/2007, -11/+22Who cares what he said. He has a Mac!
- NYC10004, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15Doesn't matter if he's Bruce Willis or Sponge Bob... He makes a good point.
- Spuy767, on 10/11/2007, -7/+18Bruce has always been one of the most grounded of celebrities. Something that he said regarding religion, a while back, something to the effect of, "Religion was an important thing 500 years ago when we didn't know what made the sun rise and set, or made the weather change. . ." struck me as particularly profound coming from someone who s in a world of people who are generally as ***** up as Tom Cruise.
- lordsandwich, on 10/11/2007, -13/+24Oh please, does no one remember how the guy has spoken out in the past?
From Wikipedia:
"Willis was one of few Hollywood celebrities to publicly support the Iraq War in 2003. He has endorsed every Republican presidential candidate except Bob Dole in 1996..."
"Willis has attempted to play down his status as one of Hollywood's most outspoken Republicans, although he continues to vocally support the Iraq war and gun ownership."
"Willis signed his name on an ad in the Los Angeles Times in support of Israel, along with Nicole Kidman and numerous other Hollywood elites."
***** hypocrite. The man needs to put up AND shut up. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17Amen.
But don't stop at actors. Why do politicians think their opinions are worth more than anybody elses? Like the politicians who take a stance on abortion - they aren't moral leaders. Or the politicians who make definitive statements about evolution or climate change - they aren't scientists. Politicians should STFU about anything that isn't politics.
Same goes for TV "journalists" who think their opinions are worth a damn. I don't give a flying frick what Bill O'Reilly thinks about anything. Journalists should report the facts and keep their opinions to themselves. They aren't experts in anything except journalism, but they think because the camera is pointed on them that somehow their opinion is worth something.
Everybody needs to STFU. It's not just Hollywood that has a problem with ego. - webXL, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13Perhaps politically minded actors on the right just put their money (careers) where their mouths are, more often than those on the left. People like Barbara Streisand don't want all the baggage and risk of a political career, even though they have mountains of money.
