Bob Barr and the Bias of Our Media
dailykos.com — In Bob Barr, there is no clearer example of how the right wing agenda leads the traditional national media around by the nose than in the presidential polling of 2008. He is absent from the network reporting of polls. He is absent from national discussions. He is absent from visual graphics.

- tajitj, on 07/16/2008, -1/+7Very true. The media seemed to be really pushing Nader in 200.
Every time a poll comes out and they do not have Barr or Nader on it, the media is being totally dishonest. They talk day and night a about how big Obamas lead is, or how polls are changing. Almost every poll I have seen, about 10% to 15% apparently say no to those 2. Are they undecided, voting for Barr, voting for Nader, McKinney, Baldwin.
http://www.bobbarr2008.com/ - sluki1, on 07/17/2008, -1/+6The media do nothing to "change" our current two-party debacle of a political system. I'm saying this and I'm a news anchor. The difference is, I go looking for news about independent candidates and include it while talking about the other two same-old-story, choke-hold on the government, lame parties. I just don't believe political seats should go to whichever side of the same coin can outspend others to buy it. We SHOULD have other choices and no one should ever hear that they're throwing away a vote on someone outside the Demublican pantheon.
- Alshia, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Thank you for your perspective, can you as a news anchor, use your authority to report on Bob Barr?
- titlemikedotws, on 07/17/2008, -0/+7Thank God we have the Internet to educate the masses. It's hard to get 15% of the poll, the amount needed in order to get into the debates, if the poll doesn't even include your name. When someone gets polled I'm sure many people say Bob Barr. How can the polling Co. say that is an undecided vote. We need to email MSM and let them know how we feel.
- heymisspenny, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4It's up to us, the People to make this happen. And even the biggest nihilist must admit that if we make a big enough scene or rally enough support, we DO get the attention. Yes, even these days. Just look at how the amnesty bill got thrown out last year. TWICE. A grassroots uprising protest from the people.
But we have to do it ourselves. We have to take the steps to band together and reach the other people. Write a letter or call the news if you want, but meanwhile stop watching it. Let their ratings drop. Change the channel. Encourage others to do the same.
The MSM isn't going to do it themselves if we don't REALLY give them a reason. If we don't show we mean business.
They won't just bite the hand that feeds them. - Alshia, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3You could also join a Bob Barr meet up group, if you want to get involved. You could also just continuing reading articles and posting comments spreading Bob Barr's message of freedom. Keep up the good work y'all. The truth will set us free, we just have to be determined to sift through all of the biased information that the media sends or way. I agree Miss Penny I can't barely bare to watch the news anymore.
- jdwebster52, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1The "Major" news outlets do not seem to be able to report good news; and Editors are now supposed to produce more copy with fewer reporters. Both work to the dis-advantage of anyone other than a Republicrat or Democan. The media is stuck on "either/or" and has no time to produce thorough reports. If you have a chance to ask a reporter a question (go to news conferences) bring up Bob Barr and ask "Why is there no coverage?" or "Has your Editor/Newspaper/Station decided to restrict the news presented?" Be confrontational in a non-menacing way and the reporters will usually tell you they are not contacted by the LP or Bob Barr Campaign. Once you provide the reporters with information they usually run it almost verbatim.
- Bridges16, on 07/19/2008, -0/+3Dear friend,
I urgently need your help.
I'm in Charleston, West Virginia attempting to get Bob Barr on the ballot. When I arrived early Wednesday morning, I didn't think it would be possible, but I had to give it a shot.
We're headed toward 48 state ballot access. Only West Virginia and Oklahoma are problems. However, there is hope in Oklahoma as we have just filed a lawsuit to get Bob Barr and Wayne Root on the ballot there.
If we win that case, only West Virginia will stand in our way of 50 state ballot access - an apex of achievement for a third-party candidate and something the media cannot ignore.
But here's my problem.
There is no active Libertarian Party in West Virginia and a very limited pool of volunteers.
I have had to bring in out-of-state petitioners from across the nation to get this drive done.
So far I have 13 petitioners on the ground and another nine on their way.
I didn't think we would have the manpower to get the drive done, but now I think it's a possibility. I have enough petitioners in the state and on their way to collect enough signatures by our August 1st deadline.
But I won't have the money to finish the drive if I don't raise $43,000 by close of business on Monday.
Russ Verney, our campaign manager, wrote to me this morning and instructed me to shut down the drive if I cannot raise the funds by COB Monday.
So far this month, we're raised less than $100,000. We're even off pace from our June fundraising totals.
The campaign cannot afford this ballot drive as I write this. We would have to choose between basic campaign operations or the possibility of 50 state ballot access.
Russ has to make a tough call on this drive but he did give me 96 hours to raise the funds to continue the effort.
I ask that you keep this drive alive by helping me raise $43,000 by close of business on Monday.
Please make an emergency donation to fund the West Virginia ballot access drive right now. Please give generously by clicking here.
My friend, I've only been in this state for a few days and we need to be on the ballot here.
When I arrived in West Virginia it was 2:30 in the morning. I pulled into a hotel parking lot and a restaurant owner and one of her patrons were standing outside smoking a cigarette.
They didn't look too happy.
As it turns out, just a few weeks earlier the county had banned smoking in all "enclosed workplaces" including bars and restaurants.
I'm not a smoker, but it's the property owner's decision to allow or disallow smoking on their premises - it is not a county bureaucrats' decision.
When I explained libertarian philosophy to them and told them about our candidate Bob Barr, their eyes lit up.
They did not know that there is an alternative to the two-party system. They didn't know that there is a party that respects an individual's rights and personal decisions.
Since then, I've talked to many more folks in this state and the same holds true. We need to give West Virginians a better choice and the only way to do that is to get Bob Barr on the ballot.
Please donate today and help me keep this drive alive. I have two weeks left to pull it off and I sincerely need your support.
A gift of $50, $100, $250 or more would be a significant help. If you can't give $50, give $5 or $10. Every dollar gets us one step closer to getting a pro-liberty candidate on the ballot in what could be our final ballot access hurdle.
Thank you for all that you do.
In Liberty,
Shane Cory
Deputy Campaign Manager
Bob Barr 2008 - cruiseliner, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2It amazes me that so many have bought in hook, line and sinker that the choices are McCain and Obama.
The news shows all consider Barr a footnote in an already decided election to put Obama in office. Barr is to be the little guy running to wave the flag for a cause.
The nation is in dangerous waters and requires a skilled navigator that will change the course.
Barr isn't a spoiler for McCain, McCain is a spoiler for Bob Barr.
How do you say? McCain is unelectable. His back bone is his military history, however the men and women fighting in Iraq see John McCain as wrong and Obama as correct!
McCain will take us further into debt than Bush did as Nero fiddles or as America sits at home watching Idol.
The shellac of Barack has worn thin as the initial hope that the integrity he would bring has gone. Shifting on promises and positions place him back in the just another politician category.
His strong point is looking good in a suit and reading a speech extremely well. Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings would be envious.
A strong hand combined with reason, though not attractive, is needed.
You do not spend what you do not have. You ease regulation and let the great minds and investors throw everything they have into many multiple sources of energy.
You employ the people of this country to work as a revitalized nation building energy sources, you purchase the goods now being made here and transported at lowered costs.
Its all a cycle that begins with You!
What is your vote worth?
