- rynsa, on 12/25/2008, -33/+374Maher is a man slightly ahead of his time, I'm afraid. His message is right on, but not politically viable in the United States. This realization, of course, will bring me no comfort when the Christo-fascists finally pull the trigger on their apocalyptic wetdreams.
Come on, you thinkers! Now is the time to prove me wrong!! Please... seriously... - rainx5, on 12/25/2008, -46/+303"Religion must die for mankind to live."
True. - rainx5, on 12/25/2008, -15/+205Any person who puts the concern of a non-human entity above the concern of other people is an enemy of humanity.
- fackjoley, on 12/25/2008, -56/+234Dugg because Bill Maher is a genius.
- wjappe, on 12/25/2008, -26/+155Great! Bill is right on, I can't believe that people would waste their lives believing in fairy tales, and perhaps be the cause of killing us all.
- maja742, on 12/25/2008, -5/+127happy winter solstice everyone
- zjbird, on 12/25/2008, -10/+102Bill Maher is the only one ballsy enough to make a video as powerful as this. I thank the almighty Spaghetti Monster for placing him here as his right-noodle man.
- Murdats, on 12/25/2008, -4/+94you can hate someone but still want them to have freedom of speech, there is a difference between wishing someone would shut up and wishing they had less rights.
- doublefelix, on 12/25/2008, -8/+95Bumper Sticker: In case of rapture, this car will be unmanned. It will then recklessly careen into children at a school crossing -- killing all of them.
- Kruez, on 12/25/2008, -4/+76I just saw this movie last night. I thought it was very interesting how they pointed out how much of the back story of Jesus Christ exactly paralleled that of the much older stories of the Egyptian god Horus (some similarities listed at http://greensboring.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=6 ... ). I'd never heard of this before, but if it's true I can't see how any Christian could look at the notion of Jesus Christ the same ever again. It's basically a mish-mash of paganism and Judaism.
- Swivelstick, on 12/25/2008, -7/+80I think you all missed the point of the movie it wasn't about changing a persons perspective but to get those with a similar perspective more pro-active in the political scene which if I'm not mistaken was the reason for the graphs.
- Murdats, on 12/25/2008, -10/+77you are right, a lot of people just haven't questioned their indoctrination, that is how a lot of athiests are born, they ask themselves why and realise that it's all stupid
- JoshuaH, on 12/25/2008, -5/+67Just in time for Christmas.
- samyoungguitar, on 12/25/2008, -3/+65I'm just sad that rational thought is considered genius.

- inactive, on 12/25/2008, -7/+62I love this movie because his goal is NOT to reach out to believers or convert them, but rather his goal is to convince the non-religious people of this country ( a larger minority than blacks, jews or gays, all of whom have their own powerful political lobbies) to rise up and be heard, and change the course of history - because if we don't, this planet and our species will be history due to the religious.
- iSeven, on 12/25/2008, -12/+65yup. And how funny that this was submitted on CHRISTmas. Yea, while growing up I became more and more confused about religion. My parents and oldest sister is catholic, my other sister is atheist. And after trying Christianity out, I became even more confused.
Thanks to a reading from the bible about a christian guy who kept praying to his "god". Because some other guy complained to the king that the christian guy was praying to the WRONG God, they sent him into the lions den. The king said "if you think you God is THE God, then he'll save from death. So good luck!" Next then you know, the christian lived. Then the king said "my bad. ok we'll send in the complainers in the lions den WITH their wives and kids." Then THEY died.
After that reading, I was like, well damn. Let those complainers die, not the wives and kids. But I didn't want to speak up in front of other Christians in the room and question "their God."
Religion is weird. - wjappe, on 12/25/2008, -19/+70I really wish they would grow up, Bill says it so clearly and as he says we may be running out of time. We cannot afford to embrace these fantasy’s anymore. In self fulfilling prophesies of our doom.
- Thinbev, on 12/25/2008, -28/+75Very well spoken video. This is why I'm a deist. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deism
We should honestly give an entire country to those suicidal nut cases and let them kill each other off like flies... Leaving all of us normal people who want to continue living in peace and harmony. - SanTe, on 12/25/2008, -4/+51"There's no way in hell (har har) that anyone religious is going to have their mind changed by this film."
That wasn't the film's intent. The purpose was to rally atheists into no longer tolerating ***** insane religious superstition as accepted "fact" that our society should be based upon. Of course Maher was showing how idiotic religious people are. And just in case you didn't get what he was doing, he came right out and explained the entire point in the closing scene of the film, and you still didn't get it. - charm803, on 12/25/2008, -3/+44May Sauce be Upon Him.
RAmen. - inactive, on 12/25/2008, -41/+81Not every one that believes in god is a nut job.
- TheOneTrueGod, on 12/25/2008, -1/+40People who believe in Santa Claus are not a problem. People who believe that Santa is an authority that wants them to do things affecting the community/world around you, however, *are* a problem.
- 47f0, on 12/25/2008, -3/+41Kick, you're kind of missing the big picture here. I don't give a rip if you believe in invisible six-foot talking rabbits. Do not think for a second though, that I will lie down and accept you hijacking the schools, and rewriting the Constitution to resemble Leviticus.
Oh, and Anti-religion would be antitheism, a direct opposition to theism. The prefix "A", simply means without. Christopher Hitchens, for example, is an antitheist. I am fine with individual, private delusions, so I am an atheist. - wjappe, on 12/25/2008, -2/+39Unless I'm mistaken, unfortunately we are outnumbered.
- paradigmxx, on 12/25/2008, -4/+39When I saw this scene in theatres, I was absolutely stunned - followed by major excitement.
Never heard such truer words. - megamod, on 12/25/2008, -18/+52That's some deep [nuclear] *****
- inactive, on 12/25/2008, -0/+32What the ***** are you talking about?
- mediaphile, on 12/25/2008, -32/+64I usually like Maher's stuff, and I'm definitely on his side of the divide on this issue. Having said that, I thought this movie was ridiculously heavy handed, lacked any shred of cleverness, and really was just preaching to the choir. I'm a film student, and my documentary class went to see this film at a theater in San Francisco (just to give you an idea of the political environment of where I'm coming from). After the film, we all discussed it and broke it down, and the basic consensus of our group was that the film failed on most levels. There was only one of us in the entire group that was actively religious, but none of us liked the film. It just didn't really have a point except to lampoon the people in the film, and religious people in general. There's no way in hell (har har) that anyone religious is going to have their mind changed by this film. It's not serving any point. So it's pretty much just an opportunity for pissed off atheists to have a laugh at all the exaggeratedly stupid people they chose to interview in the film.
I think the film could have greatly benefited from a large dose of sophistication. But that was sorely lacking in everything from Maher's interviews to the cliche trick editing.
My point is, Maher is not slightly ahead of his time. He's not ahead of his time at all. There are far more intelligent atheists than Bill Maher. And it's not about political viability. He's simply just as reactionary and blunt as the next guy. Atheism as a concept gained nothing from this film. - ProfessorRiffs, on 12/25/2008, -5/+34Tip-toeing around the subject has obviously proved to be pretty damn futile. Sometimes a man just has to break ***** down like it is.
- Elderon, on 12/25/2008, -2/+30When this movie came out I saw lots and lots of comments from religious people saying how he was so awful and atheist were horrible people trying to force their views on the poor religious people... *****! You don't see atheist churches on every street corner telling people they are gonna burn for eternity unless they pray to an invisible person. You don't see an atheist lobby forcing what they want down the throats of everyone else. How many atheists have you seen become suicide bombers? How many crusades or inquisitions did atheists start?
The fact is that atheists all need to stand up to keep from being trampled in this country. We're not forcing our views down anyone's throat, but this country is becoming increasingly religious and it's not a good thing. I'm terrified that being religious seems to be almost a requirement to become a politician. I don't want some quack that believes in fairy tales running the country with the power to end the world. NO I would rather have an atheist who uses logic and reason and who doesn't believe in the "end times"
I'll probably be buried but I don't mind. Just shows I struck a nerve. - charm803, on 12/25/2008, -5/+32You should watch http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com/
It literally breaks it down piece by piece on all the beginnings of Egyptian lore and how similar it is toChristianity, among others.
After you watch it, do your research and you will see just what a crock the religion thing is. - TheSum, on 12/25/2008, -3/+30If Bill is correct and there is no god then being fanatic for a cause is a human condition. Which means once religion is finally removed from society humans will find something else to fight about. Most of us probably have seen this take place as the Operating System wars where people 'believe" in their OS as the only true OS. This is exhibited by fairly intellectual people.

- Andrewticus, on 12/25/2008, -2/+27He didn't represent the extremist view alone. He even addressed the "non-extremist" view, describing them as mafia wives. It's clear that you weren't critical in your review.
He never said religion was the source of violence, but rather, people use it as a tool to control others, and thus, propagates and justifies various violent acts. So yes, religion is the problem.
What the ***** does DMT have to do with God? Believe it or not, hallucinations aren't considered solid proof for the existence of a god. Furthermore, Bill isn't an anti-theist, he's anti-religion, so please, get your arguments in order. - zjbird, on 12/25/2008, -1/+26RAmen.
- scarwars, on 12/25/2008, -5/+29but it makes more sense then religious folks..
- circa1015, on 12/25/2008, -22/+46I'm agnostic, and I thought that he was being a bit too abrasive in making his point, especially if his goal is to reach out to believers. If you are going to convince somebody that they are wrong in their faith, don't use fire and brimstone; that is how they recruit people.
- flashback99, on 12/25/2008, -1/+25There is no such thing as god, but I'll defend your right to believe in whatever stupid ***** you can come up with as long as you don't try and make it into a law that affects the real ***** world we all live in.
