Bill Maher's Touching Tribute to Jerry Falwell
crooksandliars.com — Maher pays his respects to the late Christian leader. "I know you're not supposed to speak ill of the dead, but I think we can make an exception because speaking ill of the dead was kind of Jerry Falwell's hobby."

- StepCousin, on 10/11/2007, -21/+3Funny how you liberals think that you're so cool and hip, yet you're the most boring, politically correct duds out there. Just look in the mirror, and you'll know it's the truth. Me? I don't give a flying ***** what the general public thinks. By default, it makes me cool.
You might ask, "Stepcousin, if you're so cool, what the *uck are you doing on digg.com?". Well, I don't know the answer, but don't fear; my time here won't last. I'm already tiring of you whiners. A lot of research points towards christianity (or other faith based religions) as being some sort of addiction disorder. People believe in an invisible fairy god. Endorphins are released. They get high and seek to get high again. It's a lot like smoking crack. Guys like Falwell, Robertson, Graham, they know this. It's what makes them rich. They're the crack dealers. - therightside, on 10/11/2007, -9/+32Really a lot of research? Those are good sources and good points.
- s0u1man, on 10/11/2007, -5/+27"a lot of research?" yeah, that's a statement I can get behind.

I'm no christain.... but do you have a cite for these "studies" or are you just spouting hate? - Alpione, on 10/11/2007, -15/+11@deathweaver - If you've ever read dildos previous posts, you know he's just spewing hate...
- Rossoneri22, on 10/11/2007, -9/+15@dildooreilly
Wow, I hope that's actually true (scientifically backed) just to see what reasoning the religious nuts use to try and disprove it. - Akaji, on 10/11/2007, -21/+16dildooreilly's a perfect example of why this whole "religion is the source of evil" crap is... well... crap. What right do you have to pass judgment on those who believe differently from you? On top of that, if organized religion is simply "crack dealing", as you so interestingly described it as, then what would you call the massive amount of philanthropy that tends to come out of religious organizations?
- dodus, on 10/11/2007, -8/+10Such studies may or may not exist, but either way it's a legitimate hypothesis which, while a bit hatefully worded, does have some support in sociological and comparative religious thinking.
- polyGone, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8In dildoreilly's defense, endorphins are released all the time. Reading, running, masturbation/sex, pain, etc. The list goes on. It doesn't seem to far off the mark to equate the bliss they feel with the release of endorphins. I will say that a quick google search did not turn up any 'research', but that may be one for our researchers to look at.
- Mrstupid7, on 10/11/2007, -5/+26I don't need sources to believe dildooreilly. I have faith.
- MisterFlaut, on 10/11/2007, -7/+16"Really a lot of research? Those are good sources and good points."
It's called psychology. Read up on it sometime.
Most people who are overly religious have a longing that can't be fulfilled via social or direct relationships, and the "love/affection" they get through religion makes up for this.
Then it's the "best thing ever", so then they keep on with it.
This is why they appear somewhat insane... sorta because they are. - Akaji, on 10/11/2007, -10/+5Wow, MisterFlaut, thanks for bringing up psychology! Not only is it the most subjective "science" that exists, its first practitioner was someone whose primary patient was a mentally ill woman who was obsessed with him, and who himself wanted to have sex with his mom. Honestly, study this stuff before you start spouting off nonsense.
- ozzum, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12Some thoughts:
Religion and politics should never mix - that was the premise this country was founded on - Falwell brought the religious right into politics and gave us George - Perhaps we should take a strong look at taking away the non-profit tax status of militant religions that meddle in politics.
Religion has always been the opiate of the masses - IE. it is easier to control a mind and make it do what you want it to than to control someones body. It is easier to take suffering, if you think your reward is in heaven. Philosophies have always ruled over reason - right or wrong as it maybe.
God is always the final curtain of understanding of any era - man goes so far and what is unexplainable with the present science of the day is the will of god or magic until it is finally explained.
As Ayn Rand (Atlas Shrugged) said "More sins have been committed in the name of altruism than for any other cause". Falwell acted in his own best self interest as did Hitler, Stalin, Genghis Khan etc.
At the present time it would be unthinkable for an atheist to run for President
Benjamin Franklin expressed the thought that if man is still evil even with religion - imagine where he would be without it.
To sum up as I see it and as Ronald Reagan said - the only thing that will unite and unify all humans to the context that we are all the same and are quantumly entangled is a visit or threat from space. - StepCousin, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3@dildooreilly
If that's the case, you might need a dose of religion. You seem very bitter and unhappy. - DildoOreilly, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2""Really a lot of research? Those are good sources and good points.""

A Christian asking for evidence?! Fvcking Priceless!
Ever notice that? A good 30-40% of Agnostic/Atheist posts supply links to factual information. Wacko fundies just report on whatever delusion they happen to be having that moment.
I dare any Relgious nut to develop a habit of supplying links with their messages. Can't do it, can you?
Heres your moment of Zen...
The recent study by UCLA's Neuropsychiatric Institute confirms the earlier findings by hundreds of researchers at dozens of universities and research institutes such as CU, USC, Stanford, Duke, Harvard Medical School, RAND, Brookings Institute, etc. showing that Christian belief is symptomatic of delusional thought disorder--"a serious mental ilness."
The irrational and illogical posts of Christians on this board certainly confirm it, too. - StepCousin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1"The recent study by UCLA's Neuropsychiatric Institute confirms the earlier findings by hundreds of researchers at dozens of universities and research institutes" ..... that @dildooreilly is one step away from a psychotic episode and/or complete meltdown.

- DrFelch, on 10/11/2007, -16/+63Maher is right on the money, as usual. What he failed to mention, however was how racism, sexism and homophobia
are now the mantra of the Republican party, mainly thanks to whackos and christofascists like the demagogue Falwell. Falwell is the man who made it possible for an ignorant, moronic lifelong failure to be elected president
simple for declaring himself a "religious" man, and duping all the stupid christos into voting for him. It was a bit of sweet irony how he only really paid lip service to heir social agenda in large part. He did give them a LOT of our tax dollars, though, for their simple minded "faith based" initiatives that hve been a miserable, ineffective and probably illegal failure. Falwell is proof that humanity needs to evolve past the deadly disease of religion. It has killed more throughout the course of human history than any other bad idea. Down with religion. We can do far better without it.- daRoach, on 10/11/2007, -11/+19There is a flaw in your logic, you assume that he only easily led people are religious or Republicans. There are people who are easily persuaded on all sides. There are Christians and Republicans who saw Falwell for what he was, a loudmouthed bigot who spoke opposite in the way that Christ would have. I could mention people on the other side of the political and religious spectrum who employ the same tactics Falwell and others used, but I'm not trying to start a political argument. I know it is pretty futile, but I'm just pretty tired of the hypocritical posts being made about how stupid people are while at the same time making stupid assumptions and reinforcing their own ignorance.
- swrostmore, on 10/11/2007, -7/+35Falwell is rumored to have said, and I quote, "God is a Republican"
- therightside, on 10/11/2007, -21/+2He is, isn't he?
- EntropyMan, on 10/11/2007, -7/+6My theory as to why Republicans like to call themselves the GOP is that it's visually similar to GOD. Just one curve is shortened. It's subliminal reinforcement.
So I've come to start calling them "The Party of GOP." - fisharmor, on 10/11/2007, -23/+3Yeah, you got it right on the money, drfelch.
It had absolutely nothing to do with the competition being:
2000 - the self proclaimed inventor of the internet, who said out loud that he wants to ban light bulbs (and whom some of us have never forgiven for being married to the rock album banner).
2004 - Mr "3 purple hearts" who likes guns, hates abortion, and won't raise taxes, who has a history of nothing but grabbing guns, supporting new and inventive abortions, and raising taxes.
Plain and simple, the Republican muppet was less of a liar. At least he's "lying" about stuff that happens to non-voters. It had nothing to do with Christianity, and as soon as you all get over that we might get a real candidate for once. - EntropyMan, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11@fisharmor, nearly ever single statement you made is incorrect. Did you realize you were ignorant, or were you simply lying? And if so, who did you think would fall for that crap?
- Dogtown7, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Religion is a very important tool in societies - particularly in Western cultures to blunt excessive indulgence and to promote in general society-beneifting traits (marriage, abstention, etc...). ''We can do better without it''? Perhaps for some, but for others there is a positive impact in Religion. The fear of Hell or the promise of an afterlife motivates many to perform society benefiting actions they wouldn't perform otherwise. Some of you Digg users feel motivated to perform such actions without the need of Religion - but please recognize that for many, the motivation must come from other means.
Here, Bill Maher is pandering. He believes there is no societal weight to him not reproducing and promoting consumption/indulgence. If the nation was filled with Bill Maher's, we would not last one generation. Everyone has their role - when you achieve great notierity and success, it's easy to cast off boundaries and limits. But for the masses, let's keep those limits and self-induced control in place. - alien2069, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0There's not enough we could say about how silly religion is besides-well, it's just silly!
- Morelia, on 10/11/2007, -17/+22I love Bill Maher and Jon Stewart ..... they should be president and vice president of the USA! They'd create the best administration ever!

He's an example of good intentions not yielding anything good. - sishgupta, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22Falwell didnt have anything close to the best intentions. He had ignorant intentions. It was his intent to convince everyone that homosexuality was immoral...
***** JERRY FALWELL. - billyverde, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10LooseCannon1: "The left just loves to spew it's hate."

- torgos, on 10/11/2007, -8/+26Death couldn't have happened to a more deserving man than Falwell. Good riddance, *****.

- texaspeaks, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5For your sake, I wish it didn't.
- weside, on 10/11/2007, -60/+5I've always believed that AIDS was God's punishment for homosexuality (and, of course, bisexuality), but never knew Falwell also thought that. And all this video does is further the homosexual agenda via the media in which long-standing taboos are depicted in a humorous light in an effort to make people warm up to them, and say, "Yeah, that's not so bad," forgetting that the act itself (not the person, but the act) is abhorrent.
What saddens me is that someday, we'll have a TV show that features a recurring character that is a child molester or child predator making cameos - albeit funny ones - that will eventually knock down that taboo of society. Think that's a bit much of me to think would actually happen? Look at what Will & Grace did to remove a long-standing taboo on homosexuality.
And people think blaming the media is a cop-out.- aidanpryde18, on 10/11/2007, -2/+44This is a ridiculous sentiment.
I'm sorry, but comparing the actions of two consenting adults, with a violent crime such as a person forcing themselves on a child is horrible.
You talk about turning an action into a joke to destroy the taboo. Well, perhaps you are doing the the exact opposite by comparing something that is harmless with a violent criminal act.
you should be ashamed of yourself for using such a horrible metaphor. - Toshibi, on 10/11/2007, -3/+29I hope you're joking. What two consenting adults do with each other is none of your ***** business. You can draw all the parallels you want between homosexuality and pedophilia, but it doesn't make them the same thing.
Adults consenting to having sex with each other is fine. Adults forcing sex on children is not. There's a huge difference there. If you can't see it you're fooling yourself. - plhearn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15@weside
can I interest you in some buttseks? - JonMcL, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24Okay, I have to take some time out to reply to this one.
If God created the HIV virus to punish homosexuals (and of course those horrible bisexuals), then don't you think he would've made it a little more precise? So that it didn't accidentally infect hetero women and newborn babies? If he created the entire universe in 7 days, can't he make the virus only target those of us who are evil with our homosexual ways?
I can't believe you people are really that dumb, are you? - fantasticFlan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Simple counter: lesbians have the lowest incidence of HIV.
- Rhodamine, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2@fantasticflan,
Why exactly is that, do you think? - krebcycle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7because God loves them? what are you insinuating?
- rodii, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6@weside (#6796810)
The *act* is abhorrent? What act do homosexuals (and Teletubbies) do that heterosexuals don't? Blowjobs, handjobs, buttsex... think think think. Help me out here. - kaskarn, on 08/31/2008, -0/+1God does not hate. Unless you are talking about this old testament bully, but I'll assume you evolved past the Leviticus injunctions... As I said, and as is clearly spelled out in the most important book of christianity, god is love. The thing is, however, you cannot control people by telling them to love. Hate is more malleable, more direct-able, more power entrusting. It is therefore more common to ironically close the eyes on the work of jesus while singing his praise.
A compassionate gay is more a follower of the christ than a hateful missionary position purist, church-going so-called christian.
- aidanpryde18, on 10/11/2007, -2/+44This is a ridiculous sentiment.
- obrysii, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24Falwell preached the exact opposite of what Jesus taught. At one point he stated--and I'm paraphrasing here because I can't find the link at the moment--that Jimmy Carter's idea for peace in the middle east was 'against Christianity as [Falwell] understood it', and that the 'turn the other cheek' idea is not what Jesus 'fought and died for'
- SeaMowse, on 10/11/2007, -8/+10I'm a Christian, but was NOT a fan of Falwell's. But aren't we doing the same thing here? Spewing hate towards Falwell? Why can't we 'be the better man (or woman)' and just let it go. Really - spewing all this hate isn't good, any way you look at it. Let the man die in peace. He will be judged by his Maker, in the same was as he judged others. The Bible says 'an eye for an eye' (such an overused verse in the Bible). But the Bible also says 'judge not, lest ye be judged'. - and that goes for anybody.
- Rossoneri22, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19That doesn't work anymore. You can only stand to the side and remain quite for so long. We have done that and as a result people like Falwell have gained far too much influence and power.
- pktgumby, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9"But the Bible also says 'judge not, lest ye be judged'"
Wait...wasn't that Metallica?! - jamshid, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I think Tinky Winky said it best:
http://www.salon.com/opinion/feature/2007/05/16/falwell_tinky/
But at the end of the day, I'm not terribly sad, and I think a lot of people feel the same way. Jerry Falwell was a divisive person, a hateful person, and what I've tried to be all about, in the Teletubbies days and since then, has been love. I've got to keep it that way. I don't want anybody feeling good about it when it's my time for Tubby bye-bye. - xt0ph3r, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Those rules only apply if you are a Christian. Falwell did a LOT of judging in his time, and now that his time is over, we can look back on his life and judge him entirely and accordingly. The specific difference, here, is that we are not judging Falwell by the color of his skin or his sexual preference... but rather, we are judging his actions.
- joeyjojo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7"Why can't we 'be the better man (or woman)' and just let it go."
a) it's cathartic
b) 'tolerating hate' is not a thing we should do for socieity's sake
And 'hating hate' is not the same thing as 'hating'.
It's a tired (but alas, well proven) spin tactic to bash anyone that tries to quash hate speech as somehow being 'more hateful' for standing against it.
Falwell hated blacks, gays, women, society, etc. But if someone hates Falwell, well then THEY are the evil one...not Falwell?
- Jade10145, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I would say the best point of this monologue was that people like Falwell use God as an excuse to say things that they themselves are against. If you use God it just looks better then if you said it. Also I liked how he pointed out the baseless statements that Falwell has said in the past. 9/11 caused by gay people? WTF!
On a side note, I am curious what kind of stories come out about Falwell now that he is gone...Gay cover up anyone? - designer, on 10/11/2007, -21/+2Not accepting all of societies perversions = Racist, Bigot, Homophobe
It can also be said that environmentalism is a religion. People believe that making small changes in their behavior will save the planet. Endorphins are released. They get high and seek to get high again. It's a lot like smoking crack. Guys like Gore, Soros, Moore, they know this. It's what makes them rich. They're the crack dealers.- FenderF4i, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18"It can also be said that environmentalism is a religion."
No it cannot. A religion includes a belief in a supernatural power. Environmentalism does not. - fantasticFlan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I've always wondered if the claiming environmentalism, evolution, and others as religions was just a setup to damning them with the 1st (or 2nd) Commandment.
- FenderF4i, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18"It can also be said that environmentalism is a religion."
- deverill, on 10/11/2007, -18/+2Maher's comments sound a lot like that other guy you folks probably think is a speaker of great truth and look up to... Fred Phelps of the Westboro so-called Baptist so-called Church. Are you folks in agreement with him as well? He says on their website that:
There is little doubt that Falwell split Hell wide open the instant he died. The evidence is compelling, overwhelming, and irrefragable.
...
Falwell warmly praised Christ-rejecting Jews, pedophile-condoning Catholics, money-grubbing compromisers, practicing fags like Mel White, and backsliders like Billy Graham and Robert Schuler, etc. All for lucre -- making him guilty of their sins.
From one nut job to another... guess both sides of the political fence has them and both sides have haters. What would you say if Rush Limbaugh said those things about Michael Moore when he passed? Hmmm? All you "Freedom of speech" lovin, President Bush hating, anti-religous zealots would be outraged and demand he be fired. I'm not calling all Diggers these things, but you know who you are. (BTW, Rush has more class than to do that, it's just an example.)- dodus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Fred Phelps also compared sodomy to eating banana pudding, not sure what your point is.
- Moosington, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Not sure I understand either. Phelps hates anyone who doesn't outwardly espouse hatred for homosexuality and his way of life.
- joeyjojo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6If you think they sound the same, then you are like many americans who seems to believe anything Falwell said...you're simply a shallow thinker, at best.
Maher is saying he disliked Falwell because he was a racist, homophobic mysogynist who used the bible as a weapon of hate.
Phelps is saying he disliked Falwell because he wasn't ENOUGH OF a racist, homophobic mysogynist who used the bible as a weapon of hate.
Opposite ends of the spectrum there, bud. - bobcatred, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Ooh, faulty logic. fun.
If a random digg member hates Falwell
and Fred Phelps hates Falwell
then a random digg member must like Fred Phelps?
Hmm.. nope, doesn't compute.
Was there a point your comment other than to point out the rather obvious fact that people on either side of the conservative-liberal spectrum can hate? - lnf69, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@
Dugg you down because of the stupid comments. As if hating that Christian bitch is synonymous with being liberal.
But what made me laugh was your ".. All you "Freedom of speech" lovin, President Bush hating ... ". This shows me that you support Bush and don't give a ***** about freedom of speech.
Too bad you lost the chance to grow up in the Soviet Union. You probably would have felt more at home.
- JOrtiz8612, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Falwell was a lunatic who made millions herding sheep (narrow minded people) who believed in his *****.
- qwerty1263, on 10/11/2007, -17/+2Man Digg keeps on getting more and more liberal by the minute, I think in order to be the community website it's supposed to be it should be a little more bipartisan other wise we'll lose our creditability. Don't get me wrong I thought Falwell was a crazy ol' Southerner with racist ideals however lets not tie him to all Republicans. If we do were as much of an idiotic hypocrite as Falwell was. I also have a theory that Maher is a homosexual; from what I’ve heard from my wife’s friend in LA he frequently goes to some gay bar named 7969. I don’t care however don’t portray yourself as something you’re not, or you’ll be the hypocrite Bill.
- Rossoneri22, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16So what if he is gay? If you ever watched the show you'd think otherwise. But anyway, what does being gay have to do with him making these comments about Falwell? It's not like he is the leader of the evangelical church or something...
- Moosington, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Maher also goes to every Playboy Mansion party and is known as a womanizer of sorts, so what's your point? Of course I didn't hear these things from your Wife's friend in L.A. so it's probably BS.
- rodii, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1@qwerty1263 (#6797105)

I love that logic! We can't be a credible group of people unless we tolerate more racists, homphobes and misogynists.
In otherwords, we can't trust a group of people unless half of them are complete idiots? - dodus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Dude, every bar in LA is a gay bar. So from Maher being seen at a gay bar in LA one can infer only that Maher likes to go to bars.

- designer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@ deverill
Fred Phelps is not a Christian nor a pastor. His church consists mainly of his own family. He is a lawyer that tries to get towns to not allow him to protest so he can sue for 1st amendment violations. - gooup, on 10/11/2007, -18/+1i find it amusing to watch the all-inclusive, non-judgmental, TOLERANT left at work.
Hellooooo hypocrisy!!!- JuCee, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9The left isn't inclusive of assholes.
- xt0ph3r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13There's no reason to be tolerant of intolerance personified.
- MisterFlaut, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9There's no hypocrisy here. I know personally, I'm tolerant as long as people are somewhat reasonable.
Falwell was a manipulator and a liar. Nothing to tolerate there considering that type of thing should be eradicated. I know the right loves manipulators and liars, so maybe that's a hard thing for ya to grasp. - OralCavity, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7tolerance of people is different than tolerance for people's actions.
having tolerance for someone who was born different than you merely for genetic reasons (racial, sexual, etc..) does equate to having tolerance for someone's actions. the "left" has never told people to be more tolerant of murders or rapists because those are ACTIONS. the "left" has told you to be tolerant of homosexuals, african americans, hispanics, and so on because those are PEOPLE.
you don't see anyone being criticized for talking ill of murders or hate mongers or rapists, why should we not talk ill of someone who has caused so much hate in his life?
no hypocrisy there at all. - dodus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1The whole separating "people" from their "actions" is a load of christian conservative doublespeak *****. If a person is not the sum of their actions, then what else are they? A Cartesian "mind"? A soul? Man, Jeffrey Dahmer sure was a swell guy, I just don't agree with his actions though, that's the only thing I have a problem with. If Hitler hadn't invaded Poland and tried to exterminate the Jews, he would have been the coolest guy ever, etc.
Just admit it, you guys hate the hell out of fags, quit pretending like you don't wish they didn't exist at all.
- gooup, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2MisterFlaut
Nice way to dance around the fact that you guys harbor just as much hatred, and in MANY cases, MORE than the intolerance harbored by Falwell. Seems a bit two-faced to me ... but, hey ... carry on. Kinda like how the left hates the south because they believe everyone in the south hates all blacks.
Hmmmm ... Bigotry personified.- OralCavity, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9you are right. i am completely bigoted against assholes who's only goal is to make life hell for other people.
unlike falwell, who was bigoted against people who never did a single thing against him and just decided to arbitrarily make them pariahs.
no shame in my bigotry of assholes - nick111, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Nah. Intollerance for intollerance isn't intollerance.
- OralCavity, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9you are right. i am completely bigoted against assholes who's only goal is to make life hell for other people.
- gooup, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2jucee
You've made my point ... thanks! Falwell though himself superior and ... oh! Wait! So do YOU!
Hypocrite- lnf69, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I KNOW that I am superior to subhuman Jerry ***** bitch, and all the so-called "Christ-followers" who continue to support the stupidity that ***** spewed.
- gooup, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2fantasticflan
No, i think Falwell was a very troubled, intolerant man that did FAR greater harm than good to the ideals of Christianity. That being said, i enjoy watching the leftists showing their true colors.- archiesteel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Wait a minute - *you* can say these things about Falwell, but the left can't because - according to you - the fact that they support tolerance means they can't denounce an intolerant bigot?
First, being tolerant does not mean what you think it means. It means that no one should be judged by the color of their skin, their sex, their religion, their nationality, etc. It does *not* mean that one considers all moral positions to be equal in value - in particular, anyone preaching intolerance can justly be condemned, because it goes straight against those core values.
You, on the other, seem to take great care in dissociating yourself from the tolerance that is at the core of leftist political theory. Does that mean that you think it's okay to discriminate against someone due to their color, sex, religion, etc.? Careful: if you say yes, you're a bigot, and if you say no, you're a hypocrite.
All in all, though, I think it's quite clear that you are first and foremost a dumbass. - lnf69, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@archiesteel
didn't you know that Christians are just better then the rest of us?
Since they are what they are.
- archiesteel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Wait a minute - *you* can say these things about Falwell, but the left can't because - according to you - the fact that they support tolerance means they can't denounce an intolerant bigot?
- Dudeee, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3I would of rather seen Christopher Hitchens tribute haha.
- TheSmitty, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Yes, Mr. Hitchens is so smart that he has a job in the media!!! Sort of like goofy looking Maher.
That anyone would find these types of people important or otherwise meanful is just sad.
- TheSmitty, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Yes, Mr. Hitchens is so smart that he has a job in the media!!! Sort of like goofy looking Maher.
- gooup, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2i think Maher's sexual orientation is meaningless, here. i will say, however, that such intolerance and outright DISRESPECT for Christianity and Catholicism shown by so many gay/lesbian activists (dressing up as cross-dressing, scantily-clad nuns/priests, for example) displays a VERY big lack of class on their part. Christians, by and large, are an intolerant lot ... it's a shame the gay community can't take the high road.
- domc, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7"(BTW, Rush has more class than to do that, it's just an example.)"
Mmm..what was that parody he did about Barak Obama. The man is an idiot like the rest of them. Talk radio in general.- DesuKN, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7You mean "Obama the Magic Negro"?
Yeah, Rush sure has class ;)
- DesuKN, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7You mean "Obama the Magic Negro"?
- MacintoshSauce, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2TV evangelists like Jerry Falwell, Benny Hinn, are all instruments of Satan. Satan deceives Christians by getting these minions of his to spew out false doctrine.
It is not nice to wish someone to go to Hell. That is for God to decide not you. - fani, on 10/11/2007, -6/+4Although I dislike Falwell, I dislike that idiot Maher too.
So even though it was fun and all, at the end of the day, Maher can ***** himself. - GeezerD, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7If there is a god, Pat Robertson will be the next to go.
- MacintoshSauce, on 10/11/2007, -6/+4If he preaches FALSE Christian doctrine, then you can bet he will be.
- dsbaehler, on 10/11/2007, -9/+4Bill Maher is a *****.
- kd1s, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Falwell was indeed a false prophet. So too are Robertson, Phelps, et al.
Then again, I don't believe in any of it so I shouldn't be pontificating. But I have read the entire Bible and what I learned was the following:
Jesus Christ was a social rebel. He believed in taking care of the sick and the outcast. In essence, he discarded the law of Yaweh and said the only law was to love one another. Not bad advice really but it's awfully hard to love fundamentalist Christians.
The other thing I took away from that year of Bible study was that God was a petty, jealous, vindictive and childish god. It's only in the New Testament that God suddenly becomes all sweetness and light. You mean to tell me than an omniscient and omnipresent and inerrant god can change his/her/its mind?
The problem I have with Christians is when they take the Bible out of context. I was at the hearings for RI house bill 6108 for Marriage Equality. Of course the usual band of idiots got up to testify against the bill. And as usual they trotted out that section in Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13. So I trotted out 18:19 and 20:18 - those are the ones that say you can't sleep with a menstruating woman. And 11:10-12 is especially fun - ask them when was the last time they ate shellfish or had a lobster dinner? It's all about context.- nick111, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You had to read the whole bible to learn two just paragraphs of stuff?
I've learned a similar amount of stuff (in fact exactly the same stuff) just from reading your post. You have a gift you know. For succinctitiy. Succinctitude. or whatever. Succinctliness. - Linc4Justice, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Under that logic, should we discard the laws against bestiality too? I always thought that one was rather prudish. And the ones telling us not to commit adultery, well that's just gay.
- nick111, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You had to read the whole bible to learn two just paragraphs of stuff?
- ichbinladen, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Falwell was a gluttonous slob. The world is better off with that savage pig dead.
- tmk40, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1wow...after reading all this hate and bs on Digg about Falwell, I can see how true it is when Jesus said that a person can EXPECT persecution if he/she speaks out in his name. If you look at the Bible throughout the whole thing, you will see that entire nations sin against God and that God allows them to fall because of their own corruption. And there is a theme throughout the Bible that a nation who is close to God will prosper and will enjoy God's benefits and protection. So when Falwell speaks about the acceptance of abortion, homosexuality, mainstreaming of pornography and that we are sinning against God...he is speaking what he thinks is true. You dont need to go back to the Old Testament to find biblical passages that speak about the sin of homosexuality...they are in the New Testament as well. If you are for the ***** agenda...you will say that Falwell is spouting hate and intolerance. And of course no one likes having a mirror put in front of them...illustrating their sin. But that is part of what a preacher is supposed to do.
Paul and Peter did the SAME THING in their day. Read any of Paul's letters and you will see I am right.
We live in an age where we can buy almost anything...even justice. And we dont let people suffer...even due to their own stupid decisions. But God doesnt operate that way. God is merciful and forgiving...but there is always judgment. Those who are espousing hate toward Falwell...want to rework the Bible into a politically correct book that has no concept of sin. And make God into a being with no judgement and no hell.
Jerry Falwell was a man who interpreted the Bible literally. Millions of people do in this country. Before you question his logic behind why AIDS is afflicting the world, you should talk about why the Flood happened...why Soddom and Gemorrah was destroyed...why Saul, Herrod, and other kings fell? The judgment of God has been present throughout biblical history...if you take the Bible literally. So therefore it is logical for a preacher to teach the things that Falwell did.
I am NOT saying he was perfect...and I wasnt a big fan of his while he was alive. But we should be fair and intelligent when we discuss such things.- dodus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Nothing "intelligent" about a literal interpretation of the Bible, heck even the Catholic church knows better than to do that nowadays.
- Morelia, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0... the Bible is a work of fiction, just as the DaVinci code is. All fiction is a blend of make-believe and truths. That is what makes them so easy to get attached to. But in the end, they are fictional works, hardly something to base a life's path upon. Do you want your kids to engineer their lives around Harry Potter, or simply enjoy the story as a literary work? Think about it!
- LucidHawk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I disagree tmk40 just like many others he threw out Biblical "truths": http://youtube.com/watch?v=5-zhNiGlogQ
- piznut, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1***** tolerance...religion is ***** and if you 'believe' in a god, you are a lesser person.
Wake up people. You are taking some fables, scratched into a piece of paper thousands of years ago by nomadic tribesman and using it to run your life and in lots of cases using to try to run other people's lives. When someone is mentally insane, we treat them or lock them away yet religios somehow get a pass.
On the other hand, its a great litmus test for deciding who to associate with. Think of it as an instant IQ test.- chaesar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Instant IQ test eh? so you only like hanging out with "smart people" then, it must be lonely at the top huh buddy, lonely at your booth in Denny's.
I am not religious, my wife is not religious but we have freinds who are, and friends who are not. It's really not a big deal and if you automatically treat people as lesser for having a faith then you just as bad as those of faith that look down upon athiests and agnostics.
- chaesar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Instant IQ test eh? so you only like hanging out with "smart people" then, it must be lonely at the top huh buddy, lonely at your booth in Denny's.
- alien2069, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Is there enough food in heaven for a fatass like Falwell to last for all eternity?
- Morelia, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I think Falwell was suffering from internalized homophobia. He longed for the deep sexual and emotional love of another man but could never get it because he was so fat and ugly ... and his tiny penis was hard to find under that quintuple flapped belly. So he lashed out at gays in retaliation for the love that never speak its name .... he must have felt internal guilt every day of his disgusting life. I wonder if he was secretly in love with Pat Robertson. Such a tragic love story.
My guess is that his gravesite will be isolated from the public for eternity ... because the family knows darn well that thousands would love to *****, piss and spit on it. - dsbaehler, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I still think Bill Maher is a *****.
- dsbaehler, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You guys are waaaaay more filled with hate and prejudice than Falwell ever was. All I see are people celebrating death of people and hoping they go to hell. Time to look in the mirror folks.
