- DarbyRides, on 10/29/2007, -18/+70I ride bikes exclusively, no car, here in Houston. When people tell me to get on the sidewalk, I yell back "The side-what?" Sidewalk *****.....side walk...not side ride you idiots.
- saiyanate, on 10/29/2007, -5/+53Seems it's like that everywhere. I used to ride my bike all over until I got hit by a car. It was the driver's fault, but in this state, we have a "contributory negligence" clause to such collisions, which means that if I in any way contributed to the accident happening, I can't claim damages. As a result, the driver's insurer refused my claim on the basis that I contributed to the accident merely by being on a bicycle on the road at all. I had to sue to get my medical bills paid.
- 582ND3R5, on 10/29/2007, -10/+51As a Los Angeles cyclist who has been told to "get out of the street" on numerous occasions I have personally experienced the ignorance of many automobile drivers. It doesn't surprise me that the officer would not be aware of the vehicle code that pertains to cyclists and their right to use the road as well.
- hiPpymIck, on 10/29/2007, -2/+34in London UK theyre pro bike - they even reward companies that put in showers/changing rooms for cyclists
green is pretty popular over here - leonidas333, on 10/29/2007, -16/+43LOL!!! I just rang both the city council, Chamber of commerce, Beverly Hills City - Operations Bureau, Police Department and am really stuck on who else to ring. Try it yourself:
Beverly Hills City - Operations Bureau, Police Department: (310) 285-2101
Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce: (310) 248-1000
Beverly Hills City - Library, Mayor and City Council: (310) 285-1013
Remember to report Citing officer: D. Prenesti #421, serial no. 74700
Either pick up the phone and make a local call or use Voip and air your disgust at these groups. Be nice, but get them to take down you complaint and forward it on. Make this cop pay for his arrogance and negligence. Come on it will at leat be a laugh as we all get his nose collectively rubed in the ***** storm he has created! :)
I MADE them get out a pen, right down my disgust at this police office in question and told them to forward it to their supperior and the relevent body.
Seriously though, I am a avid cyclist, I rider through the city every day and I will London to a brick I could beat any one in a car any where within 10KM radius of the city in a street race. This disgusts me and if any cop acted this way I would say be suing both him and the driver.
The fact that any one not in a fuel gusseling vehicle is not welcome in this city is so pathetic, this will influence any decision to travel, shop or do business in this area - Slovenian6474, on 10/29/2007, -2/+27...what do you do with the other bicyclists? Hit them?
- NikoKun, on 10/10/2007, -7/+31Cyclists are actually SUPPOSED to use the road, instead of the sidewalk, so that people walking don't get hurt or in the way...
But Cyclists have the right of way, on the road... so for this one to get a ticket is the most ridiculous thing I've seen... That moron in the SUV should have got the ticket... and the biker should press charges... - SeanNorton, on 10/29/2007, -0/+22Perhaps CA is different, but here in NY it's technically illegal to ride your bike on the sidewalks as they are reserved for pedestrian traffic, bicycles are to ride in assigned bike lanes/paths or in the road maintaining with the flow of traffic, following all regulations as would pertain to motor vehicles.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+24My friend was wrote a ticket for not having insurance on his bike, the judge of course threw it out but man.....what a ***** dumb ass cop
- jwiegmann, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23It is not more difficult to ride on the sidewalk, it is more dangerous - and in most places, illegal. SideWALKS are builtfor pedestrians.
- professor0fruit, on 10/10/2007, -15/+36I only share the road with bicyclist who obey traffic laws and don't run red lights
"share the road, share the laws" - inactive, on 10/29/2007, -17/+37I'm surprised no one has said this:
As a driver I have no problem with cyclists on the roads (mainly because its illegal to ride on the sidewalk where I live). If you want to ride on the road like a big boy or gal, you had better be prepared to follow the same rules as everyone else.
Here's what I have a problem with:
1) Cyclists running lights (not just amber run throughs like many cars, but blatent disregard for the intersection)
2) Cyclists riding the wrong way up a street or side
3) Cyclists weaving through moving traffic
4) Cyclists that do not signal
5) Cyclists that have no lamps or reflectors
6) Cyclists who do not yeild or cluelessly use traffic circles
7) Cyclists that think they own the entire lane
8) Cyclists that drive on the sidewalk only to bypass the rules of the road, and then jump out in the road once they are unimpeded by traffic rules
9) Cyclists that drive out of single file in their lane
10) Cyclists that think drivers are out to get them and behave accordingly
11) I could go on and on.
Get off your high horse cyclists, you too are likely part of the problem. I'm not a perfect driver but I formulated this list after nearly hitting 3 bicylists this summer. The fact that I drive safely as possible and don't make my own rules of the road, saved their lives in each case. - oldhick, on 10/10/2007, -7/+26Cyclists are also supposed to obey traffic signals, signs, and maintain a safe speed... That happens all the time!
- flaterates, on 10/29/2007, -1/+20I live in Beverly Hills. These people are the worst, most selfish drivers in the world. It's all about them and ***** everyone else. Want to turn left from the right lane? OK. Want to turn right from the left lane? OK. What? Got a cell phone call? Stop in the middle of the street. Someone pulling out of a parking space? Lay on your horn! They're disgusting.
- Rahodeb, on 10/29/2007, -4/+22You can't pass a car in the same lane, but a car keeps up with traffic. I know everyone is like "bike's are teh best!", but It's annoying getting stuck behind a bike at 10mph on a 40mph road and the biker is weaving around making it dangerous for you to pass. I think city's need to invest more money in bike lanes and make it safer/easier for everyone.
- phredwolf, on 10/29/2007, -3/+19How many pedestrians do you know that have been killed by cyclists?
How many pedestrians do you know that have been killed by automobiles?
How many cyclists do you know that have been killed by automobiles? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15You ride a bike in Houston? I hope you have a good life insurance policy. Houston has to be the most bike un-friendly city in the US.
- sibhod, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Owning would be nice, but I'd be happy with just an equal share. Why are drivers so angsty about cyclists? Bikes may add a few seconds to a driver's trip, but a car can quite easily kill or maim a cyclist.
- dext3r, on 10/29/2007, -2/+16Eat a dick.
- Slovenian6474, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14"but personally I dont see why it is any more difficult for you to ride on the sidewalk as it is on the road. "
There's pedestrians on the sidewalk. Same reason you shouldn't drive your car on the sidewalk. Plus not all roads have sidewalks. I don't know if you guys get it or not, but it's legal for bikes to ride on the road.
That said, I really like the places where the city puts in a bike path along the road. Not many places do but it kinda solves this whole problem. - moonbeamjones, on 10/10/2007, -5/+17This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. This is why I left California.
I'm all for bikers rights, and ride a bike myself, but this is the most embellished, hyperbolic, EXAGGERATED story I've read on any blog in a long time. It was completely unbelievable. The biker was SO calm and SO rational while irrational crazy people yelled and screamed in half-sentences of grunts and moans while slinging their dirty, evil automobiles of ignorance all around
I guarantee you that that was NOT how the whole thing went down. - davidrools, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12I hate being the only cyclist who stops at stop signs =/
- AriaStar, on 10/29/2007, -3/+15It's also legal to ride your bike on the road. Roads are for vehicles, and biked are vehicles.
- akatherder, on 10/29/2007, -0/+11I'm from Detroit. What the ***** is a bike?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12One of the two times I was hit by a car was riding on the sidewalk as I thought it would ease traffic in a congested area. Parking lots of business let out over the sidewalks meaning the car that pulled out pulled right into the sidewalk and, not expecting someone going 15 miles an hour, crashed in to me sending me over the hood and on to the ground. THAT is why you don't ride on sidewalks - they are built for people going 2-3 miles an hour, are uneven and have limited site distance and are thus extremely dangerous.
Otherwise it is customary for a cyclist to take the rightmost 1/3 of a lane to allow passing. The only time I take a whole lane (as a commuter) is when someone is bullying me. If we could just all learn to share the road and courteous none of this would be a problem. - benneh1, on 10/29/2007, -3/+14In the netherlands, god bless, it is exactly the other way around.
- fancypantscz, on 10/29/2007, -10/+20I go everywhere in Prague by bike and often encounter drivers who think bikes do not belong on the road. I find this strange. Drivers should be happy to see cyclists on the road because in the vast majority of situations it is easy and safe to pass a cyclist within the same lane. Whereas, if that cyclist were driving a car, most of the time it would be dangerous if not impossible to pass. I know this is not scientific but it certainly seems that despite the left hand turns and lane blocking for self preservation (too narrow to pass) cyclists, on the whole, make it easier for drivers to get where they are going by effectively removing a car from the road.
In my opinion, everyone on the road needs to relax. - tuanscott, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15It's more dangerous for several reasons. Pedestrians travel at roughly 2-3mph. Sure, it's fine if you're cruising along at 5mph as some cyclists do, but most cyclists actually trying to get anywhere are somewhere in 13-18mph, and some of us regularly push 20-25mph. Also, there are no rules on sidewalks. On a road, vehicles travel in a certain direction in certain places and behave in certain ways. On the sidewalk, people behave randomly, going in any direction, stopping, coming in and out of buildings. If someone is riding down the sidewalk at 15mph they are a safety hazard to themselves and pedestrians.
If a car were in the road going 15mph, how would you treat it? - cawpin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10@NikoKun - To be entirely correct, all things being equal, bicycles have the right of way. I actually had a guy here in Chandler, suburb of Phoenix, run into the front bumper of my Jeep. He kept yelling "Bicycles have the right of way!". All I told him was "Yes, they do except when the idiot riding them is going against the flow of traffic. He was going north, in the bike lane, on the southbound side of a road. The cop got there and told the guy exactly the same thing. He may have gone to jail, too. He apparently had a warrant out for him from the next county because of driving on a suspended license. I didn't stick around to find out.
- dext3r, on 10/10/2007, -9/+18***** you right up your ass. Just because you get stuck behind someone that doesn't know how to pass a bike, its not the cyclists fault. I HATE when people think they can't pass me. Trust me, you've got TONS of room. Learn how to drive. ***** your cars. ***** Austin, Texas. Stop hitting me with your cars. Stop hitting my friends. Stop being a bunch of ***** retards that think you're entitled to the road because you spent thousands of dollars and are behind the wheel of a machine that weighs over a ton. As a cyclist, I'm sick of YOUR *****. Can't deal with bikes? Tough *****. Take the bus or walk. Move closer to your job. Don't live in a sprawling *****. ***** off.
- Cerialthriller, on 10/29/2007, -15/+24if bikes want to share the road then they should be paying insurance as well. A car hitting a bike is not always the car's fault. Bikers love to not stop at stop signs or red lights. From my experiences they want all the good but wont take any of the bad. I was at a stop light a few years ago, got rear ended by a guy on a bike, and guess what, my insurance company got sued, my insurance rates went up, and I had a big ***** scratch on my trunk. Turns out the cop wrote car struck bike on the report, my pictures of my scratched trunk and digital camera pictures i took before cops were there are less credible then a police report..
- Cheeseness, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Dude, if it's not safe to pass, you wait. Just like you'd wait for a slow car. Them's the rules.
- oldhick, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11That's absolutely hilarious. You just explained why drivers hate cyclists and why its not safe in your argument. So because pedestrians walk slower than you ride its dangerous. You cycle slower than I drive, its dangerous. Pedestrians behave randomly, therefor dangerous. Cyclist rarely obey any traffic signals, stop signs, yield signs, etc... Dangerous.
Heheh... I love Digg. By the way, I also don't mind cyclist. I admire people who take care of their bodies and get some exercise. I just wish they followed the laws instead of bitching about others that don't. - digguserer, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12I am in MN also.. A friend of mine got cut off and hit the back of a car a few weeks ago. The driver almost took out 4 members of our group trying to beat us to her turn. The cops were less than helpful. Refused to give her a wreckless driving or failure to yield ticket-even with multiple witnesses and an admission from her that she cut us off. Luckily no one was permanently injured and I think that the 10k plus insurance payout (which will easily double her premiums) for the damage to the bikes, ambulance ride, ER, etc may cause her to think again before trying to save 10 seconds on her travel time. The only comments from her family were 'They shouldn't be on on the road.'.. No apology, no concern for the injured rider.
It is so sad how much vitriol people have towards bikers who are obeying the law. - VeganG, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I hear ya. Cyclists think they can speed straight through a 4-way stop. It's like they think they're motorists AND pedestrians, whichever is convenient at the time.
- Chakat, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10If you can't drive without getting infuriated at every little thing, take the bus.
- usefuljenkins, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13I have the same issues in Minnesota. We have very few bike lanes, and when someone yells at me to ride on the sidewalk, I just keep riding. Riding on the sidewalk is more dangerous than the road, cause people never look left/right before crossing the sidewalk when pulling up to a intersection. I put a HUGE dent in the side of a guys mercedes, and just laughed at him when he asked for my drivers license and information.
- fancypantscz, on 10/29/2007, -3/+11You missed part of my point, a car keeps up with traffic but it also makes traffic. Too often I have to deal with drivers racing around me only to wait at a red light, where I pass them in line and then they have to pass me again.
I too hate weaving cyclists but I hate speeding and erratic drivers more. Bad cyclists endanger themselves and pedestrians (for the most part) but bad drivers threaten the lives of everyone on or near the road.
More designated bike lanes are a very good idea. - rpelayo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Really, then where are all the bike lanes ? London's a bloody unsafe place to ride your bike. We're way worse than a lot of European countries. The only difference to the American situation above is I'm pretty damn sure our police officers wouldn't have reacted like that.
- Scottamus, on 10/29/2007, -2/+9I'm surprised no one has said this:

This guy just Killed 2 people on bikes in his truck... thats bad enough but he did the same thing back in 2005. and beyond that the guy he Killed in 2005 his Wife was killed while riding her bike almost exactly 1 year prior - sibhod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Thanks for the guarantee. I'd gladly accept it, internet stranger, because you have so much credibility.
- fashiontrot, on 10/29/2007, -1/+8New York has a great "no-fault" law. The officer pointed out that the driver was at fault so all my medical expenses (extensive surgery, hospital stay, physical therapy) were billed directly to dude's insurance company, and paid.
Hope you get better, and if you do, keep riding!!! - Chickenlip, on 10/29/2007, -9/+16After reading the account, it seems to me, that after being yelled at by the SUV driver, the bicyclist began to block the SUV on the road to keep her from moving, which is why the police were called ...
The story is quite one-sided, and albeit the SUV driver was in the wrong for yelling and honking, the bicyclist should have let it go, and not blocked and harassed the driver. - mookiemookie, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10If it was in a road that people normally do 35 to 45 mph on? Like a hazard. The same way as I view self righteous and inconsiderate bike riders who do it.
- dext3r, on 10/29/2007, -3/+9You can't keep up with the human race. Terminate yourself.
- DontSayFanboy, on 10/29/2007, -1/+7> 7) Cyclists that think they own the entire lane
Nobody owns the lane, but by law cyclists are allowed to use the full lane just like a car. It is often much safer for everyone involved.
I think all of the points you raise, with exception to the ones applicable to the sidewalk can be applied to automobile drivers as well. - loveandrockets, on 10/29/2007, -1/+7In San Francisco it's a different story. I've seen cab drivers cut off bike messengers and the messengers will pull that cab driver out and beat him up.
- spikes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Toronto has a lot of "diamond lanes", for bikers, taxi's, carpoolers, etc. Bikers are not allowed to ride on the sidewalks, although in my experience this by-law does not seem enforced at all.
