- jynweythek, on 03/05/2009, -16/+192FTA "This seems to be an effort to indiscriminately go after anyone who contributed money, regardless of their position on gay issues," says Frank Schubert, spokesman for the Yes on 8 campaign. He says the backlash has endangered individuals who exercised their constitutional right to freedom of religion.
Um, no. if you own a business and oppose my personal rights, I am going to shop/eat/spend elsewhere. it has nothing to do with "endangering" anybody. - amoirae, on 03/05/2009, -23/+172Why do people still buy into the false idea of Christians in America being victimized/marginalized?
These protests are about Mormons, Catholics, and other Christians demonizing gays with lies to strip them of equal rights.
The suggestions that it isn't a right and to deny parrallels between Loving v. Virginia are dishonest. To bring up ad infinitum that there should be only civil unions for all is a tired and pointless attempt to change the subject.
Suggestions that equality already exists because men both gay and straight can marry a woman is snide, dishonest, and incendiary.
The religious views of others shouldn't be a part of the conversation. Freedom of religion does not grant the right to impose religious views on others via law.
The absurd pseudo scientific "research" about the detrimental effects of gays has been discredited time and time again.
When will actual equality replace making laws out of bigotry? - treepour, on 03/06/2009, -15/+119Backers Of Calif. Gay Marriage Ban Face Backlash -- as well they should.
Sorry, but I don't really care about the whole gay issue personally, but my chosen religion demands that I discriminate against you. I hope you don't mind. Please understand. It's not me, it's not my business establishment doing the discrimination, it's just my religion. Again, hope you don't mind and sorry for the inconvenience. What? You're saying my religion ISN'T justification for discriminating against you? How dare you discriminate against my religion and the good people who follow it?!? - ju66l3r, on 03/06/2009, -8/+107Screw these people. I have no sympathy for these business owners. They give money at the behest of their religious leaders to support an effort to limit the rights of gays and then point at all the ways they love the gay community as if their hypocrisy doesn't deserve retaliation. It's not a witch hunt if you've been publicly dancing around the cauldron! If you donated money that came from MY consumer dollars in some way, then you can bet that you won't be getting one more dollar from me to use to keep others down.
- jeches, on 03/05/2009, -11/+92What'd they expect???
- ricperry1, on 03/06/2009, -10/+87The freedom of speech granted in the Constitution does not also grant anonymity nor does it excuse the exerciser of free speech from the consequences thereof.
- trolleyfan, on 03/06/2009, -2/+69"This seems to be an effort to indiscriminately go after anyone who contributed money, regardless of their position on gay issues"
Ummm, they're going after them because - whatever *else* their "position[s] on gay issues" might be, *one* of them is to oppose gays having the right to marry.
And since this is a group *supporting* gays having a right to marry, well, Duh! - theuserdylan, on 03/06/2009, -9/+68Wow people really don't understand their constitutional freedoms. Apple and Google both gave $1 million to fight Prop 8. Makes me feel good to support companies that aren't a bunch of dicks. I've never even met anyone under the age of the 30 that's against gay rights. Of course, I've never been to the south.
- drstock, on 03/06/2009, -14/+67I think Sean Penns speech at the Oscars really nailed it. Our grandchildren will be ashamed of us, just as we are ashamed of our ancestors who supported nazis or kept slaves.
- Polycarp87, on 03/06/2009, -5/+56It is funny to see those who would deny civil liberties to others now try to hide behind their own civil liberties in defense of their actions.
Also, "He says the backlash has endangered individuals who exercised their constitutional right to freedom of religion."
Freedom of Religion is not the same as Freedom to Impose Religion. Muslims don't eat pork, but that doesn't mean they should make pork eating illegal. Live your life by your own faith and quit trying to run mine too. - frsrblch, on 03/06/2009, -5/+44I hate intolerance.
- Nateon, on 03/06/2009, -3/+39"Leatherby says he was mystified, because the Creamery had always enjoyed good relations with the gay and lesbian community."i
Mr. Leatherby, do you really think gays will want to eat at your Creamery when you donated $20,000 of their money to laws against their civil rights? If we were friends and I ***** your wife, would you still let me come over for dinner? - wtrwlkr, on 03/06/2009, -1/+34When, exactly, did homosexuals "harm" others? Yes, there might be a couple of idiots who might have resorted to violence or intimidation, but generalising an entire segment of the US population like you did is just ignorant.
- pintomp3, on 03/06/2009, -2/+35Not long ago marriage could between children and old men. It once included multiple wives. Until recently it excluded people of different races marrying each other. The "definition of marriage" is not static. If you are so worried about the "meaning and importance of marriage" why aren't you out there stopping shows like "Who wants to marry a millionaire" and closing down drive thru wedding chapels? Why not let two consenting adults marry each other regardless of race, religion, or sexual preference? Why is your life so fragile that the happiness of others threatens it?
- scarz99, on 03/06/2009, -8/+40Average Anti-Gay Activist: My religion says that gays can't get married and that God hates fags.
Average Rational Person: Is your religion your government? No. - tacobueno, on 03/06/2009, -5/+36Who would of thought that people get mad when you take away their rights?
- maxvette, on 03/06/2009, -3/+34For me, prop 8 was not about gay rights or marriage. Prop 8 was an attempt to put the rights of a minority up for a majority vote. It was deeply saddening to see it even make it onto the ballot. sexuality and marriage asside, this was an attack on democracy that should never have been allowed
- C0ntraRadical, on 03/06/2009, -4/+34Imagine if someone worked to prevent you from marrying the person you love. Wouldn't you want to give them a piece of your mind?
- pintomp3, on 03/06/2009, -4/+33Why are Christian fundamentalists trying to turn America into Iran or Saudi Arabia?
- wtrwlkr, on 03/06/2009, -2/+30Talibangelicals.
- Suricou, on 03/06/2009, -0/+27If someone donates money to support prop eight, wouldn't that be a very clear statement of their position on gay rights?
- Samohtneas, on 03/06/2009, -8/+35Probably the dumbest comment I've seen all day long. Congratulations!
- phyx726, on 03/06/2009, -4/+31Everytime i hear someone make the "its Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve" comment, i just have an urge to punch things. That thing being the person's face.
- walshgopher, on 03/06/2009, -2/+25Thats what kills me, the people being protested act and speak like they're innocent victims.
- inactive, on 03/06/2009, -2/+24I'd be willing to go to jail for this cause, yes.
It's none of your ***** business who I marry. How would you like it if I were to stop you from marrying the person who you love? You'd certainly do the same thing.
And it would be the right thing to do. - pilot3033, on 03/06/2009, -2/+24Drummer: that's not going on here. The group targeted for criticism in the article donated money to a group that is for a gay marriage ban.
You could be atheistic, polytheistic, whatever, doesn't matter to me, but if you're against equal rights then I'm gonna bring it up. - bradharrelson, on 03/06/2009, -0/+21He sounds someone who would say "But I have a lot of black friends!"
- donnytomas, on 03/06/2009, -3/+24Whilst not exactly 'endangering', this would certainly be considered intimidation and harassment.
Which is EXACTLY what Prop 8 is. - wuvamber, on 03/06/2009, -1/+22I can't tolerate intolerant people.
- inactive, on 03/06/2009, -7/+28You're damn right I think it's OK.
- srturner47, on 03/06/2009, -5/+25We tried separate but equal once...didn't work out so well did it.
- geniusj, on 03/06/2009, -1/+21The 1st amendment is supposed to protect you from the government. We have other laws for dealing with retaliation from individuals. That said, I don't think that boycotting or sending mean letters are any of the things that you can be arrested for.
- DaviDTC, on 03/06/2009, -9/+28Ask someone who voted yes on 8 how they would feel if they couldn't marry someone they love. When they answer with it is ok cause they are the opposite gender, ask them why they think love is gender based.
- pintomp3, on 03/06/2009, -3/+22Polygamy results in the expulsion of the excess males of a society in order to maintain a high female to male ratio. It is demographically unsustainable without some form of selective infanticide or selective abortion.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_boys_%28polygamy ... - inactive, on 03/06/2009, -6/+25You're an idiot. An absolute ***** idiot.
- wtrwlkr, on 03/06/2009, -1/+19A black person can marry from the same race = A white person can marry from the same race
THAT SEEMS EQUAL TO ME
/asshat - inactive, on 03/06/2009, -1/+19You're a ***** lunatic
- AgeofMastery, on 03/06/2009, -4/+22So it's ok to persecute gays, but not ok for there to be a backlash.
***** hypocrite. - nevetssav, on 03/06/2009, -5/+22Any ban on gay marriage is both overly invested in the sacred - and thus a violation of church and state - or it is an impediment to an individual's pursuit of happiness. One is a violation of American values and identity, and the other is an explicit violation of Constitution.
The state must view any commitment between two individuals as either a marriage or a union, but to define one or the other individually based on religion? No self respecting judge should uphold it. - chakan2, on 03/06/2009, -3/+20"This seems to be an effort to indiscriminately go after anyone who contributed money, regardless of their position on gay issues"
-First off, voting yes on 8 is a clear indication of your stance on 'gay' issues
"I think that overall the attempt here is to intimidate and punish people so that they are less inclined to speak out in the future," he says.
-So lets take away a minority's rights, that way the minority is less likely to speak out in the future. It's Ok to intimidate and punish gay people, but not the people that voted to take away their rights...
***** you. - Davin900, on 03/06/2009, -0/+17I used to think it was an almost purely generational gap too. I casually mentioned to my 85 year-old grandmother the other day that several of my friends are gay and, without question or prompting, she said "Ya know, I think that homosexuality is just something that we didn't talk about in my day but I think people should be with whoever they love." She's also a devout midwest Christian who often votes Republican. She's also from a Norwegian family, though, and they have a long cultural tradition of acceptance, even with things they don't necessarily agree with. Anyway, I was just very surprised and proud of my grandma that day.
P.S. She has no open gay family members or friends so I was especially proud that she reached this conclusion objectively. - CaptOblivious, on 03/06/2009, -1/+18amoirae said
"Freedom of religion does not grant the right to impose religious views on others via law."
That my friend is the very heart of the spirit of the constitution.
Now, how do we strip ALL the religious groups of the power to impose their will upon those not of their religion? - inactive, on 03/06/2009, -1/+18@malanic - you're totally right, it really is in people's best interests to keep their heads and go about things a little more calmly - but don't underestimate the shock and anger that people feel when they're treated this way. And when people publicly declare their support of this treatment, they should be prepared for the backlash that will result.
- inactive, on 03/06/2009, -3/+19Of course, some would claim that marriage isn't a right. I think that's ridiculous, though. We live in a society that supposedly values freedom. We should not have to grovel and seek permission from the government to do things. We should have a right to live our lives how we choose, with government intervention only in the case that it's absolutely necessary in order to protect people's rights. Proposition 8 did nothing to protect anyone's rights - it restricted freedom unnecessarily. If you ask me, that's the primary problem with government today - we don't consider whether a given piece of legislation is absolutely necessary to defend personal rights - we just see the government as a system by which we can impose our wills on others.
- prodigitalson, on 03/06/2009, -0/+16HAve you ever listened to Rush? Hes like the the commercial break for an extended infomercial hodown. ITs all SleepNumber, Bowflex, "Work from home!!!", etc.. Theres not much i could boycott because i have no intention of buying any of the ***** theyre hocking.
- Polycarp87, on 03/06/2009, -0/+16That is a new take on this I haven't heard before.
"You are denying my freedom to take away your freedom."
I like it!
You should read some opinions on the problems of having a pure or unregulated democracy, where the majority can persecute the minority. Just because over 50% of people voted for something doesn't always mean that it should be legal. Do you think that white people (the majority in the USA) should be able to amend the constitution to enslave blacks again? That is an extreme example, but it is to show how democratic power can still be abused, just like any other kind of power. All democratic societies must be founded on basic inalienable rights, like those in the Bill of Rights, to extend protections to the minority who may otherwise be trampled. - pintomp3, on 03/06/2009, -3/+19Marrying someone of the opposite race was once considered a SPECIAL right.
- wtrwlkr, on 03/06/2009, -7/+22The Bible tells them so.
- maxvette, on 03/06/2009, -1/+16Democracy should not be used to opress the minority, by default the rights of minorites, when put up to popular vote will always lose, thats because theyre a minority. Prop 8 was an abuse of the system used to opress an un-popular minority
when you allow minority rights to go for popular vote it undermines everything our country stands for - inactive, on 03/06/2009, -1/+16Why do Christians care about gay marriage? If marriage is actually a holy union, how can a law force God to acknowledge it?
Let it go down (lol go down) and everybody can be happy. The gays can be married and the Christians can just say that all the gays have is ink on paper. -
