- chrismwood, on 09/01/2009, -22/+592I think it's already been well documented that this lady is ***** insane.
- Mnementh2230, on 09/01/2009, -21/+315"many americans pay more than half their income in taxes"??
Since when? The highest income tax bracket is 35% (for people making over $372,950). I'm unaware of how one could possibly spend over half their income on taxes alone. Bachmann is, as chrismwood above me said, ***** insane. - mnpilot, on 09/01/2009, -11/+241Please slit your wrist, go ahead, it won't hurt a bit
- tcbishop12, on 09/01/2009, -7/+226Slit our wrists? Of course, Michelle. You first.
- ennuisquared, on 09/01/2009, -12/+225Sorry Bachmann you attention-grabbing whore. You don't have enough Palin points to become the most hated Republican woman.
- relaxeder, on 09/01/2009, -6/+161"Right now, we are looking at reaching down the throat and ripping the guts out of freedom."
What the fuuuuuuuuuck. - Apokalyps2547, on 09/01/2009, -8/+142I'm starting to move from disgust to pity. Bachmann needs professional HELP.
- inactive, on 09/01/2009, -9/+128I didn't know Michelle was an Emo girl.
- Coven, on 09/01/2009, -7/+113Remember, Michelle, it's down the road, not across the street!
- NoDrama, on 09/01/2009, -7/+104Of course, just last week at her forum in Lake Elmo, MN, Bachmann not only said we all agree health care reform is needed, she added that we will also need a "safety net" to cover those who cannot afford to get insurance other ways. Can you talk out of more than two sides of your mouth at once?
She's pandering and posturing, but in the end she'll agree to anything if she can make it appear she's anti-Obama.
http://realitytax.wordpress.com/2009/08/28/rep-mic ... - FyreGoddess, on 09/01/2009, -11/+99While I agree with the "***** insane" part, I think it is possible for someone to spend half their income in taxes. 35% is the highest income tax bracket federally, but someone who lives in a state with high taxes or who lives in a large city and has to pay local taxes as well is going to, overall, pay a higher percentage in taxes. Add in property taxes, etc. and, yes, I think it could add up to 50% or more of your income going to an assortment of taxes.
That said, I *strongly* doubt that it's "many" by any stretch of the imagination. It is, however, very possible to get to that point. - JHW539, on 09/02/2009, -16/+94"Bachmann's claim is correct."
No, no it's not. Like many people, you seem to miss how marginal income tax rates work. If you're in the 35% bracket, you NEVER pay 35% of your income into that income tax - it's not possible since your first $350k is taxed at the lower brackets, plus you have exemptions, plus capital gains (the majority of income over $1 million) are taxed at only 15%. FICA and Medicare taxes are not collected on income over about $125k, so for the highest earners they are an irrelevant fraction of their income.
The amount people pay in Federal taxes is documented and released by the IRS. As a percentage of gross income, it goes down for the top percentile bracket (see IRS.gov historical data and the capital gains tax hole). So unless by "many" you mean the fraction of a percent of people who own extraordinarily expensive property with no mortgage/mortgage tax deduction in a very high tax locality (NY city) whose full income is not counted as capital gains (oops, take NY city off that list), then she is wrong.
And ***** insane. - coraleaterlinda, on 09/01/2009, -7/+85Go ahead and slit your wrists, let me know how that works out for you.
This sounds kinda like cult-ish behavior. - pintomp3, on 09/02/2009, -13/+80Taxes were even higher under Reagan. Why didn't she slit her wrists back then?
- DigitalQuartz, on 09/02/2009, -6/+63She should really think about moving up here to Canada first; after she does it, we'll fix her wrists for free.
- Elranzer, on 09/02/2009, -3/+49I support the part about Michelle slitting her wrists.
- RavagesOfTime, on 09/02/2009, -5/+47The summary is slightly incorrect.
It's actually Michelle Bachmann (R-Jupiter). - thelastbushman, on 09/02/2009, -6/+45fcking americans always complaining about high taxes. Come to Australia and if you earn over $180,000 you pay.... $55k + 45% of every dollar over $180,000. Plus all the other taxes. But... who gives a *****, we have an amazing country because of our tax dollars and a decent health care system even if you don't have insurance. And anytime someone whinges in the media about getting taxed to much above $180,000... no one listens because you already have enough ***** money.
- inactive, on 09/02/2009, -2/+40When someone says "What we have to do today is make a covenant to slit our wrists", wouldn't you sort of say "No matter what she's advocating, it can't possibly be right"?
- inactive, on 09/01/2009, -4/+40Remember up the river, not across the street!
- EarlOfLade, on 09/02/2009, -6/+40USA is the only country I know where mentally insane people get elected rather than locked up in a mental institution.
No wonder she is fighting health care, she is a prime candidate for a padded room! - homercles337, on 09/02/2009, -3/+37Nonetheless, she still manages to astound me the more she speaks. She cant even explain why she thinks health care reform should not pass--its only because the evil, libural, communist, fascist, democrats are supporting it. The ignorant party of "no" indeed.
- stubear, on 09/02/2009, -3/+37Do you see liberals making pacts to derail Republican legislation, damn the consequences? No? Then kindly STFU.
- NoDrama, on 09/01/2009, -1/+33Do you know what her "family business" is? A mental health clinic.
- JohnnySoftware, on 09/02/2009, -6/+38That's a health care plan that is probably not going to prove too popular.
- zeitgueist, on 09/02/2009, -2/+32No, she's pretty objectively crazy. Read up on her more.
- rocknog, on 09/01/2009, -1/+30I don't remotely understand how anyone can feel strongly about any position regarding healthcare reform. I actually ended up attending a town hall meeting last night (entirely by accident, I might add - I was out on a walk and stumbled upon it in progress at my alma mater - so I decided to stop by and check out what was up). I heard a million ideas being put forth - seemed like everyone had their own solution, and I realized something - I know next to nothing about healthcare policy, and I don't think many others do, either. And I mean, everyone was sincerely passionate about their pet suggestion, but the thing was, I don't see how anyone is supposed to be able to discern what's going to work and what's not.
I wound up leaving that meeting feeling more strongly than ever that reform is needed, but more unsure than ever on what the best solution is. I mean, all of the arguments I heard seemed to be deeply rooted in passion and emotion. Which struck me as doubly odd - I mean, I don't think these people are healtcare policy experts, and so their sureness that they know what is right is perplexing to me, and besides, if all the arguments are based on passion and emotion, how am I to discern which one is the best?
And this is true on all sides of the issue. And the more I hear arguments based solely on passion and emotion (and ideology), the more confused I feel about the whole thing. Emotion and ideology don't help me make an informed decision. In fact, they do the opposite. What I want is a pragmatic approach based on facts and logic. And that's exactly what I'm not getting with the current healthcare debate. - zeitgueist, on 09/02/2009, -1/+29She also has a long history of getting things factually wrong.
- pcyopick, on 09/02/2009, -4/+32And under universal health care, all of them would be covered.
- JoeParanoid, on 09/01/2009, -8/+35While I disagree with pro-lifers and deplore their tactics, I can understand at least why they feel strongly about their position. It makes no sense that anyone should become so insanely opposed to such a small changes in the present system that might allow a few more people access to healthcare. Should the government ever get into forced medical treatment, that's a different issue.
- ShingoEX, on 09/02/2009, -6/+32If the crazies wanna slit their wrists, I'll be happy to provide them with the razors to do it.
- jerbaker, on 09/02/2009, -3/+29Keep in mind that 35% is the marginal rate. It doesn't apply to your entire income, but only a certain portion of it. That means your effective tax rate is much lower than 35%.
@humptyz - I actually track every tax I pay with Quicken (even the 2 cents on my natural gas bill, gasoline taxes, etc.). My total tax rate is in the 35% range and I live in California with a 9.75% sales tax, high state income tax, and my income is 50% more than yours. I take no deductions other than the standard deduction. There's no way your taxes are even close to 50%. - gttim, on 09/02/2009, -4/+30It amazes me how many people who think they know everything do not understand marginal tax rates. You, sir, are correct. And with deductions, exemptions and loopholes, most high earners pay much less than their "supposed" marginal rate.
Now if corporations actually paid their fair share of taxes, we could probably lower the marginal rate even more. Hell, most large corporations pay nothing in taxes anymore, leaving it to the people to pay. - subliminali, on 09/02/2009, -4/+27please, minnesota, tell me this woman doesn't have a chance at re-election. I can't handle another 2 years of her.
- jeffwmartin, on 09/02/2009, -0/+22@humptyz,
Your federal income tax would only be $8,938. First, you are in the 25%, not 28% tax bracket and second, the entire amount isn't taxed at the highest rate. It is a graduated income tax. The first $8,000 is taxed at 10%, the next $25,000 is taxed at 15%, and the amount between $33,000 and $51,000 is taxed at 25%. - Paranor01, on 09/02/2009, -5/+27She and her group sounds more and more like cult leaders & members every day.
- KrayzieKyd, on 09/02/2009, -2/+23what context would make that make sense?
- youliveinfear, on 09/01/2009, -1/+21In America, everyone has an opinion, and is naturally an expert on the topic du jour thanks to equally clueless pundits feeding them talking points as facts.
- untreadatom, on 09/02/2009, -3/+23Right?!?!
These nuts are beginning to worry me. - dshPls, on 09/02/2009, -1/+20"Estimated sales tax = $719 "
RTFC - Zong, on 09/02/2009, -3/+22You know ***** you no really ***** you. All the conservatives use the word Liberal like a 3 letter word. You guy demonize liberals LITERALLY. In some conservative families it's a death nail to actually be considered liberal. When it comes to HATE extremist conservatives gave birth to it. Compare every single rally during the campaign, compare the debate who are the ones showing up with guns who are the ones calling who terrorist etc.... Who are the ones WHO still use the your with us or against us paradigm. Even after all that stupid ***** the President is STILL willing and wants to work with conservatives which says a lot about his character even though it irritates us to hell.
- jerbaker, on 09/02/2009, -5/+24Please demonstrate with an actual example. I track all my taxes (even gasoline tax) and my TOTAL taxes are about 35%.
- NorthMass, on 09/02/2009, -37/+56When you factor into account FICA taxes, the Medicare tax, property taxes, sales taxes, excise taxes, and many other taxes at the regional and state level, yes many people do pay over 50% of their income in taxes, Bachmann's claim is correct.

Let it bleed as long as possible so as to make a bigger statement against universal health care. We support your protest as we are all in this together. Be strong, you can do it. - humptyz, on 09/02/2009, -7/+24If I estimate how much I pay a year in taxes it comes out to 39%.
$51,000 income
28% federal income taxes = $14,280
7% state income taxes = $3,570
Estimated sales tax = $719 (http://apps.irs.gov/app/stdc/stdc.html)
Vehicle tax = $300
Property tax = $1,200
Total taxes = $20,069
$20,069 / $51,000 = .3935 = 39%
So saying I'm paying more than half of my income to taxes is a stretch for me. - trolleyfan, on 09/02/2009, -7/+24"There are a lot of us who would be fine with doing away with food stamps, cash assistance, daycare assistance, health care, medicare, blah blah because we don't want it, need it, nor will we ever use it, but we're forced to pay for it."
Welcome to the concept of "a community."
What are you paying for? Well, you're paying for not having people starved to death on the sidewalk in front of your house. You're paying to insure that children are not left alone at home while their parents work (and thus doing things like dying, or lighting your building on fire and such). You're paying to make sure that epidemics don't get started which - no matter how much you save by not paying - will affect you.
Oh, and you're paying to insure that a vast number of homeless, starving, sick people won't figure that, having nothing to lose, killing you and eating you is now a viable option... -
