You give me a good solid conservative Democrat to vote for, and I will vote for them. In my state we replaced a Liberal Republican with a Conservative Democrat. Granted, not a huge move, but I'll take it. Voted yes on banning partial-birth abortion except to save mother’s life. He only rated 30% by NARAL, indicating a pro-life voting record. On guns he he was voted an 'A' by the NRA, and received their endorsement. In fact he just signed a “Castle Doctrine” law to expand the self-defense rights of law-abiding citizens.

When asked if he would consider the veep spot with Obama he said he would vigorously campaign for him but:

He's not my ideal, I'll keep an eye on him in the next year or so and see if he gets my vote (which he might). Most of the true conservatives don't care about party. You'd be surprised how quick many of them would vote for someone as conservative as John Kennedy if we could have him now, compared to what we have to choose from this election cycle. (think about it John Kennedy vs John McCain, who's more conservative?) Even Bill Clinton is further to the Right (as a centrists) than Obama. You may comfort yourself thinking it's all about party. Since you're a Liberal, difficult concepts like political philosophy are bound to make your head hurt.
