- ghaib, on 11/25/2008, -5/+84Safety isn't the point of all the "security measures"; surveillance and citizen control is.
- noangelcame, on 11/25/2008, -2/+53Safer from what? Terrorism?
You mean, could members of Al Qaeda enter the US,. lets say across the Mexican border, then load up on ammo and guns and shoot up our schools, or just blow up a bunch of *****. The answer is, yes they could. Anybody could. If a disgruntled kid can do it once a year at least, then anyone can if they hate us enough.
If you think that our Government passing the Patriot Act has made us safer, what would you say if the government told us they could prevent all future school shootings or other acts of violence if we just pass another Patriot Act? We would laugh our asses off, because we all know it would be impossible.
Government can't keep us safe from people who are determined to kill us, regardless if they are from the Middle East, or if their names are Dylan and Jacob. So, we shouldn't look at this as if we are safer or not, we should be asking, is this threat more hype than not. - thenekkidtruth, on 11/25/2008, -9/+52Part of what I do is to track and report security statistics.
I'm sure it comes as little surprise to anyone to learn that terrorism incidents of all kinds have skyrocked under Bush, beginning not after 9/11, but after his illegal expedition into Iraq.
He's failed at everything else - why should this be an exception? - Heapbasket, on 11/25/2008, -2/+40We'd have less enemies if we abandoned our current policies towards everything. Drug problems in America; we target South American farmers who grow the plant to survive. 19 men attack us; we invade Iraq and thousands of innocent Iraqis have died since. It just seems like our approach to a lot of things isn't working.
- HomeGrown, on 11/25/2008, -0/+31I simply must ask, Were we ever 'safe'?
- Navicerts, on 11/25/2008, -3/+34It didn't really "evolve" as much as it was "conjured" imo.
Terrorists AKA bad guys have existed since the dawn of man and will continue to exists till the the demise of man, nothing has changed but your perception. - sockpuppets, on 11/25/2008, -2/+31How about we just get the ***** out of the rest of the world and focus on our problems here at home?
- DangerCollie, on 11/25/2008, -2/+29Not just no, but hell no. We've spent billions of dollars on a false sense of security. Ridiculous lines at airports because we think the inconvenience makes us safer.
It's all a charade. Billions of dollars worth of smoke and mirrors to put on a nice security theater to impress people. But safer? No, not at all. We're not any safer because we're not any smarter. - vtbarrera, on 02/03/2009, -5/+28We are surely more aware of potential bioterrorism, but not exactly any safer than we were 7 years ago. The readiness of the federal government to respond to potential bioterror is a ***** joke.
- the2989, on 11/25/2008, -2/+23Why'd you bury it if it agrees with your opinion?
- PoizonFrog, on 11/25/2008, -5/+26I think the redistribution of wealth that Bush affected, using 911 was quite effective. I doubt his response was ever intended to diminish terrorism.
Anyone up for another bailout? - thepoliticalcat, on 11/25/2008, -2/+21Of course not. We STILL haven't implemented the findings of the 9/11 Commission. Although we have caused old people, nursing mothers, babies, and your average airline customer unbelievable levels of angst, irritation, and sheer discomfort.
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -1/+20GET BACK TO WORK
- inactive, on 11/26/2008, -0/+18This is all stupid fear mongering, trying to get you to fall in line with whatever "safety measures" they tell you to follow. Think for yourself.
- burchie2, on 11/25/2008, -4/+20safer until something happens.
- gimmeslack12, on 11/25/2008, -2/+18How can us the public even begin to discuss if we're "safer"? We haven't been given a shred of truth for 8 years. We have no idea what is going on out there in the world, hell, even in our own country for that matter (Americans that is). Sure we can throw a ton of money at a department and demand results but this is like shooting in the dark. We're bound to miss the mark most of the time. That doesn't make us safer in my opinion.
- YodaJones, on 11/25/2008, -11/+26No. The End. Buried.
- metapop, on 11/26/2008, -2/+17you forgot to add the /sarcasm
- Navicerts, on 11/25/2008, -15/+30I don't understand why this is even a question. What reality do people live in where they actually believe that our governments actions post 9/11 had any bearing on the attacks of 9/11 at all? Sure it was a nice excuse to push an agenda (Iraq) and grant some contracts to the campaign contributers. However, aside from some changes in air line security (which are not as much as all the hype makes them out to be) why would anyone believe we are safer as a nation? How does sticking our neck out further and engaging in more international conflict make us safer? Government does not have control and never did, they have the *image* of control and that's what keeps them in power. I think the current administration has the delusion that they have actual control over every human on earth (or can gain that control through force). War on terror, yeah that will end right around the time the war on drugs ends; the only question I have is do they plan to fight this "war" forever or are they really so thick as to believe they can "win"?
My image of the Avg(American) is someone who believes that the Iraq war (and all conflict) in the middle east is basically the US military going to find "the bad guys" responsible for 9/11 so we can imprison them and make sure nothing bad happens again! Please tell me I am wrong on this point, people are not really this obtuse are they? If so do they have a logical argument that I am completely missing? Then again maybe this is not what Avg(American) thinks but instead the image that the main stream media would like to portray thus leading me to the conclusion, or maybe that in itself makes it a self fulfilling prophecy.
Also, it was a one time incident, yeah bad ***** happens but maybe they should have just looked at air line security as a result of the attacks instead of changing the entire countries national defense (offense) plan. Maybe 9/11 would have never happened in the first place if the security of air lines was left up to the air lines instead of the US government. I don't think it is necessary to dole out any punishment for "failing to protect the US" on 9/11 but is it really necessary to grant so much leverage to the government *because* of the 9/11 attacks considering it was their responsibility to keep the air lines safe in the first place? Because after all in West Philadelphia where I was born and raised, on the playground is where I spent most of my days, chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool and all shootin' some b-ball outside the school when a couple of guys who were up to no good, started making trouble in my neighborhood. Got in one little fight and my mom got scared, said you're moving with your Auntie and Uncle in Belair. - EricSchC1, on 11/26/2008, -2/+16"You cannot win a War on Terrorism. It’s like having a war on jealousy."
-David Cross - Jereome209, on 11/26/2008, -1/+14I think we are more vulnerable to tyranny from our own government then we are form terrorists attacks. Homeland Security is a great example.
- positron, on 11/26/2008, -1/+13Nobody I know has been mauled by a tiger since I began my War on Tigers. I have made all my friends and family aware of the dangers of tiger attacks. Are we safer now than before I started? My answer would be yes.
- locojones, on 11/26/2008, -0/+12I've been carrying around this lucky rock that I found in my front yard since 9/11 and we haven't got attacked since then. You should be thanking me instead.
Coorelation != causation.
By the way, if you did any research whatsoever into the attacks, you'd understand that Osama bin Laden's underlying goal was to bankrupt America through their response to it. He hasn't had to coordinate any other events because we played right into his hands and did all the dirty work for him -- revoking freedoms, starting wars, and blowing through our Treasury like a kid in a candy store. - adkenc, on 11/26/2008, -0/+12/s
- ChayD, on 11/26/2008, -0/+11***** hell, talk about word fatigue; "terror this" "terror that" "terror terror terror" "weapons of mass destruction". Its gets to the point where the words mean nothing any more.
- gibman, on 11/25/2008, -1/+11You dick. I was going to RTFA. Oh well.
- Swivelstick, on 11/26/2008, -0/+10From internationals yes their focus was the USSR and Europe 2 - 3 decades ago but then ya'll had to spread "freedom" and "democracy" to the world mainly by bombing the ***** out of stuff. How terrorism didn't arrive from South America is amazing as they've been ***** with a lot longer.
- kemp34, on 11/25/2008, -5/+15Belligerence rarely produces peace.
- inactive, on 11/26/2008, -2/+12But at least there was no mushroom cloud over a major American city, Just 4100 dead American soldiers, and an economic disaster that dwarfs the Great Depression.
Thanks George, you are the worst president ever and your backward barbaric ideology and your supporters are more dangerous than any number of planes flying into buildings. - tofagerl, on 11/26/2008, -2/+12You weren't attacked _before_ either!
- Lewie, on 11/26/2008, -0/+9What ever happened to "let the free market decide"? Well, the free market wants drugs, so let them have it.
- oboshoe, on 11/26/2008, -1/+10
And we have the mighty TSA to thank. If it were not for the great and might TSA, terrorist would be able to sneak bottles of water on board like they did in the lawless pre 9/11 days - lemur, on 11/26/2008, -0/+9We probably would be safer if it weren't for all the escalation our government committed.
- ATL, on 06/20/2009, -0/+9Spoiler: reading digg comments often results in spoilers.
- metaliq, on 11/25/2008, -7/+15BUT WE HAVEN'T BEEN ATTACKED AGAIN!
Bush saved us! - scarwars, on 11/26/2008, -0/+8That an ignorant reply dusanmal.
For those farmers it's either grow the drugs or get killed by the druglords..
And besides, the money they make is better than growing vegetables. - Ne007, on 11/26/2008, -2/+10The Patriot act has made the establishment "safer" because any sort of dissent equals terrorist now. They see it coming and are getting themselves prepared.
- EricSchC1, on 11/26/2008, -1/+9Too bad they hate us *because of* whats gone down in the last 7 years.
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -3/+11Safer? Probably.
Will we get hit again in some way? Probably.
Oh well, that's life. - c010rb1indusa, on 11/26/2008, -0/+8Al Qaeda's goal on 9/11 was not about how many people they killed, it was about the imagery and how it effected the choices Americans and their government made. If it was about killing people there would be suicide bombers going off left and right in this country, it's not hard to sneak across the Mexican border. 9/11 was a recruiting tool for Al Qaeda, and evidence has shown it has been effective since the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. Our presence in the Middle East has done nothing but increase terrorist recruiting.
By bleeding cash into these foreign wars, and relying on Iraq and Afghanistan for our energy policy(oil), and foreign policy we have been pumping all our resources into something that hasn't worked and that is bankrupting our country. We're killing ourselves from the inside, and this is far more dangerous than any potential terrorist attack could be. - regularsteven, on 11/25/2008, -2/+9What kind of one sided debate forum is this? Of course we are! Civil rights, who needs them?
err, i give up... i got nothing - inactive, on 11/26/2008, -2/+9Instead we are being attacked by our own government, through bills such as the Patriot Act, H.R. 1955, and FISA. Your local police no longer needs a warrant to search your home. Heck you don't even have to be there. Phone tapping used to be illegal. Guess what, now its not. Think we are safer? Think again.
- ultraJesus, on 11/26/2008, -9/+16The 911 truthers are coming out of the goddamn walls.
- inactive, on 11/26/2008, -11/+18No
The Pentagon says we create 3 terrorists for every muslim we kill. I guess having your family murdered makes you wanna fight back or something?
Nevermind that 9/11 was an inside job - scarwars, on 11/26/2008, -0/+7Avg(American) ?
- Ne007, on 11/26/2008, -0/+7I don't light my farts as much as I used to so I would say yes.
BUT...If the rich want you dead, then they will kill you....the plan sure as hell doesn't start in some cave somewhere.... - inactive, on 11/26/2008, -2/+9Spoiler: You will never be safer. That's how this is orchestrated. The Man needs you terrorized, read some history books and you'll see the pattern.
- therealkdog, on 11/26/2008, -1/+8I never felt unsafe.
- Ne007, on 11/26/2008, -1/+8Yes, it was a huge ***** of a failure with everyone getting promotions after their complete and utter insolence.
I would have made a better General that day. I called for air support the second the 1st plane hit because I knew it wasn't an accident.....SERIOUSLY! -
