- inactive, on 12/08/2008, -8/+102FTA: We did ask Mr. Khalidi whether he wanted to respond to the campaign charges against him. He answered, via e-mail, that "I will stick to my policy of letting this idiot wind blow over."
I give him credit. If it was me, I'd be suing for defamation of character. - wagnerboi, on 10/31/2008, -6/+96McCain seems intent on bringing the national dialogue down to the level of schoolyard taunts. He's obsessed with bogeymen and unable to articulate anything more coherent than "me good, him bad".
A McCain presidency would likely make Bush's terms look like a golden age of reason and tolerance. Let's please not go there. - cheesegypsy, on 10/31/2008, -5/+85The title of this editorial is just hilarious. McCain's entire campaign is like something out of a bad movie, and starring Joe the Plumber.
John: I DON'T WANT TO LIVE IN A COUNTRY EMBODIED BY A DUMB-ASS PLUMBER. Not all plumbers are morons, but this guy is a moron and his fifteen minutes of fame were up 2 weeks ago. I also don't want our country to be embodied by a dumb-ass governor from Alaska. I want smart people to rule our country. Is that too much to ask? I want a President who doesn't insult my intelligence by having Joe, Tito, Sarah and Hank Williams as they centerpiece of their campaign. Is it too much to ask to have a smart President for at least four years?
America--demand more! - AZDEN, on 10/31/2008, -10/+73"vile smear" of a renowned scholar is a new low for the McCain campaign.

- Alheithinn, on 10/31/2008, -5/+54McCain has apparently been a childish, crude, profane bully his entire life, before he was shot down and after. This man has not changed in his entire life - only his inability to hide his many character flaws has become increasingly apparent as the most recent campaign wears down. Fortunately, it appears the American people understand what's going on, and are not being swayed. Enough of Joe the Plumber already, and enough of John McCain too.
- ReasonWinsOut, on 01/07/2009, -5/+40Idiot wind, indeed. Like everything that comes out of Palin's ***** mouth.
- mebble, on 10/31/2008, -11/+41RNC = Racist National Committee.
- whatthefu, on 11/01/2008, -3/+28The fact that Ayers and Khalidi have become central to this election is beyond despicable. They are not running. Harassing them and calling them names makes you a *****.
- johnn11238, on 11/01/2008, -3/+25Dugg for Dylan reference.
- LouiseCalabro, on 10/31/2008, -8/+29"We did ask Mr. Khalidi whether he wanted to respond to the campaign charges against him. That's good advice for anyone still listening to the McCain campaign's increasingly reckless ad hominem attacks. Sadly, that wind is likely to keep blowing for four more days."
- aussiejan, on 10/31/2008, -4/+22I am hoping that he and Bill Ayers will sue after the election. If I was them, I would name McCain, Palin, the McCain campaign and the Republican party in the law suit.
- iguana99, on 11/01/2008, -3/+20I guess McCain must believe that if you "pal around" with people with whom you don't totally agree, then you run the risk of being contaminated by their views. Perhaps he would prefer to surround himself with "yes men" (and women), as does our current president.
Or perhaps the McCain campaign is just out to make a lot of noise, hoping people don't look too closely at the facts. For example, the International Republican Institute, long chaired by McCain, funded the Palestine Center, which had Khalidi on its board of directors.
That's called hypocrisy. Never mind the fact that this attack is designed to profit from anti-Arab sentiment, and is therefore basically a racist tactic.
Clearly, the geniuses running the McCain campaign haven't yet figured out how to use Google (or believe their potential supporters are too dumb or lazy to use it themselves)... - inactive, on 11/01/2008, -3/+19oh, you poor soul...
cite a source, asshat. - inactive, on 10/31/2008, -2/+18And he's not even licensed!
- nosecohn, on 11/01/2008, -0/+15The thing that really strikes me about Joe is that he asked a question of Obama after claiming that he was about to buy a business that would net him personally over $250k per year. That was almost immediately proven to be false. He is nowhere near being able to make such a purchase. So, the guy who has become the most potent symbol for McCain's campaign did it by lying about his qualifications right off the bat. What does that say about the campaign?
- nosecohn, on 11/01/2008, -0/+13Obama has never said any of those things. Find me the quote.
If you're suggesting an equivalence between whispering campaigns or partisan blog posts for Obama to the actual words that are coming out of McCain's mouth at rallies in front of his supporters, then your judgment in shot. - orlandogeek, on 11/01/2008, -0/+12That's exactly it. They're just trying to make a ton of noise and distract people who aren't interested in and/or intelligent enough to bother looking up the truth. Each of the attacks only last for a few days before they come up with a new one. That is a clear indication to an intelligent person that they don't believe that garbage either, but they want the unwashed masses to believe it.
- ENFP, on 11/01/2008, -0/+12I've been following the Obama campaign closely for months and I have not once heard any of those things coming from them.
- ChromaticDragon, on 11/01/2008, -2/+14Maybe we need to spell it out for you...
Racism can take many forms. The aspect being suggested here has nothing to do with John McCain's views or actions towards African-Americans.
The idea here is this latest campaign twist is yet another of the many tired attempts to beat the FEAR drums. According to McCain's campaign we should FEAR Khalidi (and Ayers, etc., etc.). Why? Somehow he's a terrorist sympathiser, or so we're led to believe. And because Obama has chatted with him on occasion we're supposed to FEAR either Obama's true nature (well dang it.. B. Hussein O. must be a terrorist after all) or his judgment because for some reason you're not supposed to talk to others who may have strange views.
The constant beating of the fear drums using icons that would seemingly resonate fear with folk (look a middle-eastern sounding name... must be a terrorist) is what is being suggested as using race for political gain here. - bardya, on 11/01/2008, -1/+13It is so sickening that association to anyone that is a Muslim or has an Islamic name is an automatic negative. There are scholars of many races and religions have all kinds of negative and positive views about Israel-Palestinian issues. Why are they not questioned? This is a frame of mind that needs to change.
The sad thing is that these tactics, as stupid as they are, have affected and will continue to affect many Americans!!!
As a Canadian I have high hopes for my American brothers. - applepro, on 11/01/2008, -3/+14"Which reminds us: We did ask Mr. Khalidi whether he wanted to respond to the campaign charges against him. He answered, via e-mail, that "I will stick to my policy of letting this idiot wind blow over." That's good advice for anyone still listening to the McCain campaign's increasingly reckless ad hominem attacks. Sadly, that wind is likely to keep blowing for four more days. "
MAKE SURE YOU VOTE ON 11/4/08! - inactive, on 10/31/2008, -4/+15Godwin's Law technically applies here.
- inactive, on 11/01/2008, -0/+11I am amused that you can't spell correctly the thing you're trying to accuse the Obama campaign of. Perhaps you could explain exactly how Obama/Biden are hatin' on the women?
- LaughingMan11, on 11/01/2008, -0/+10It's very clear that McCain/Palin doesn't respect "scholars" or the "educated." Clearly having achieved something in a scholarly way makes you a) an elitist b) a socialist or c) a terrorist.
Joe the Plumber never had to go to no fancy school. - Gr00ver, on 11/01/2008, -1/+11Ah yes.. the Drudge report.. fair and balanced.
/sarcasm - outreach417, on 11/01/2008, -1/+11This just in - McCain claims Obama is a Cylon...
- SergeantPepper, on 11/01/2008, -8/+17You are an idiot, McCain. It's a wonder you still know how to breathe.
- teamgwho, on 11/01/2008, -1/+10When i as in college my friends & I enjoyed played a great board game called Supremacy, in which you took control of one of several European powers in the early 20th c. It was impossible for any one country to win singlehandedly, so the players had to forge alliances. One of the key things I learned is always always talk to your "enemies". At a minimum you learn what they're thinking, and at best you may find that you have a mutual nuisance that you can temporarily ally with. Sure he may try to snowjob you, but you learn to recognize the lies and the ***** and eventually can discern the truth that he is trying to conceal. Even better is if your "enemy" is backed into a bad spot, he may appreciate your help, but if you're not even talking you'll never know it and won't benefit from the copperative effort.
Now sure, this is a game and I know that.
But I think the idea of always keeping open communications is a smart one.
If your beliefs are based upon such solid foundations, they should be able to tolerate criticisms. - johnn11238, on 11/01/2008, -1/+9A bit shrill, aren't we?
- digggggggggg, on 11/01/2008, -0/+8What's McCain's appeal anyway? That's not a hypothetical question - I really want to know what people see in this guy.
- inactive, on 11/01/2008, -1/+9Oh, don't try validating your user name with some boogedy boogedy halloween drool!
- tubbsthezombie, on 11/01/2008, -0/+8He's trying to link Obama to this Muslim man, and is trying to somehow link this man with terrorism.
Didn't you get the memo? Muslims are scary now. Like the Japanese in WW2. We're supposed to demonize our "enemies", y'know. - nosecohn, on 11/01/2008, -0/+8Well, at the moment, he seems to be appealing to people by making them scared... tossing out labels like "socialist", "terrorist", etc. From my view, that would mean that he appeals to inherently fearful people, though I'm sure his supporters would disagree. Interestingly, I rarely hear them talking about the good things McCain will do, though they do go on and on about all the terrible things Obama is/will do (even though he SAYS he isn't/won't).
- nosecohn, on 11/01/2008, -1/+9If these kinds of loose associations make Obama a terrorist, don't they in turn make McCain a terrorist? I mean, he's worked with Obama in the same organization for years, they've been seen together dozens of times, and they've even spoken at the same events.
- BillDoE, on 11/01/2008, -3/+11When did Washington Post start the 5 cookies and you pay policy? Anyways, just like the NY Times, if you get a page that requires a Subscription, just delete your Washington Post cookies and try again.
- Disgod, on 11/01/2008, -0/+7Hitler didn't have the internet to contend with!!! Political lies and propaganda are debunked almost as quickly as they are spouted off.
I honestly wonder how much different this election would have turned out if it wasn't for the internet. - publiclurker, on 11/01/2008, -0/+7Red Neck Collection?
- tumatakuru, on 11/01/2008, -1/+8"Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your mouth,
Blowing down the backroads headin south.
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth,
Youre an idiot, babe.
Its a wonder that you still know how to breathe."
Bob the prophet - ChromaticDragon, on 11/01/2008, -0/+7No offense, but this shouldn't cause liberals to weep. This is EXACTLY what the Democrats need right now.
I won't bore you with details about electoral college counts or the facts that nationwide polls are next to useless or that Zogby has got some funny methods which many other pollsters discount.
Nah. I just wanted to point out to you that one of the largest dangers facing Obama's campaign right now is that sufficient numbers of Dems stay home Tuesday because they think it's a done deal.
Pointing out to them that this may not be the case (cough.. cough.. although only swing states matter..) is what they NEED to ensure required turnout (ignoring early voting heavily slanted toward Dems.. cough.. cough..). - ZenFountain, on 11/01/2008, -2/+9But McCain said we're all Joe the Plumber, Tito the Builder, Serenity the Stripper, or whatever the hell the latest name + occupation slogan is . Ha..ha..ha, not funny sir.
- rotundo, on 11/01/2008, -0/+6You are correct that it is foolish for people to claim that anyone against Obama is a racist. Most of these people would have voted against _any_ democrat.
However I do not see that the Obama campaign has been nearly as nasty. They are negative, but generally on policy issues -- not by appealing to fear of shadowy secrets, guilt by loose association, and strange uses of the word "socialist" and "Marxist".
And I haven't seen even one iota of misogyny. I have a lot of criticism of Palin, but it's surely not related to her being a woman any more than your criticisms of Obama are related to him being black. - Dweller99, on 11/01/2008, -3/+9funny, the only time I hear "love and tolerance" as a liberal position its coming from a right wing troll. Since conservatives are anti-liberal in stance does that make them hateful and intolerant?
You don't need to answer that, I think the answer is self-evident. - nosecohn, on 11/01/2008, -1/+7Time to start taking your medication again.
- firemaple, on 11/01/2008, -3/+9I guess its safe to say that you guys aren't lawyers.
- inactive, on 11/01/2008, -3/+8....and his ability to mesmerize a crowd with his public speaking.
