- LatencyRemix, on 10/12/2007, -9/+172Al Sharpton is one of the people who continues to keep racism alive..he is every bit as racist towards white people as some white people are towards blacks.
- DCMacHead, on 10/12/2007, -8/+157He is also a "non-hand washer", too. I witnessed first hand in the men's room after flying to LaGuardia on the U.S. Airways shuttle.
- wozley, on 10/12/2007, -4/+93@LatencyRemix
Agreed. Him and Jackson. I really think they just enjoy the spotlight, and they play the race card everywhere they can to get it. - hmmmok, on 10/12/2007, -2/+68@str3ama
she was never raped you moron. please crawl out from rock and join the world. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+63digga please..

If he didn't keep racism alive he wouldn't have a job. - uberchaoslord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+40Well actually it was proven she was never raped, abducted, etc.... She was well-fed, had recently brushed her teeth, had no physical damage (her clothes were burned, but she wasn't). Her ex boyfriend admitted to making the story up.
- mekongcola, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41Sharpton = Boy who cried wolf...
Only the ignorant or racist will actually take his claims seriously. This man is a media whore who will use any chance to pull the race card for attention. - greyghost487, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39the thing i dont get about the whole being compensated for the past crimes against black people is that basically all our ancestors were slaves at one point. (assuming most of us have European decent) 99.9% of us have ancestor that were serfs, maybe a slight step up from slavery, but to the point were you were basically a slave to the land.
Your land master let you have a small shack, and maybe a sheep or goat. This was practiced through out all of Europe through the middle ages and renaissance, Germany, England, France, Spain, Poland and Russia (Russia had serfdom much longer) . Point being where is my compensation from the polish nobles who owned my family?!!? there is none and i don't want none! it didn't happen to me and i am perfectly fine forging my own destiny.
Even when slavery was still going on in the south, Irish coming to america had a similar situation, many in NY and boston held racist beliefs. They worked in factories with sub standard wages, often ftheir kids had to work so a family could barely scrap by. How dissimilar is that to blacks in the south? yeah the irish were free but free enough to quite their job and watch their family starve to death. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+41Hey look, its that Nappy Headed Hos guy!
- pittpat, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37You forgot racist.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30The difference is that MLK stood for racial equality. Sharpton only stands for retribution, and his hatemongering is no better than the KKK, Mel Gibson, or any other known racist.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29No one knows. I don't think he's even a reverend. He should be filed under the same category as Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell as "hypocritical religious figures oversaturated with media attention"
- btgoss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25But he is always very silent about Darfur and modern slavery in Muslim African nations.
- Wonderkind, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27He'll go down in history as having a street in NY named after him.
Real estate prices on that street will drop like a hot rock. - Desslok, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23"Did you know that every town in America....EVERY one...is required to have a street named after MLK? If they don't, they don't receive any federal funding of any kind."
*****. I live in a town without one, and we get federal funding. Make up another story for the gullible. - davidjunit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Another double standard. "Nappy headed hoes" has been done in rap music before; guess whitey isn't allowed to say that either.
- fisticuffs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Al Sharpton is a racial ambulance chaser. Every time someone makes a comment that's racist, or perceived to be racist, there's Al with his two cents. The guy has made a career out of grandstanding and rhetoric.
I think back in the day he may have stood for something, but now he's as guilty as the richest white man when it comes to black rights. He'd be twice as effective if he talked half as much. - jobenly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Something people don't appreciate is the damage that is done (especially to a public persona) once someone is labelled racist or sexist or a sexual offender. If you work with children, you're suspended immediately whether the allegations have any tangible proof or not.
Don't sit back and apologize if you're accused of being racist. Stand up for your freedom from slander, which is what falsely calling someone racist really is. I really don't care much for her, but I respect Joan Rivers after she stood up to race baiting: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4360054.stm
...and going on Sharpton's show was dumb. Imus showed up and put his foot in his mouth. http://www.nypost.com/seven/04102007/news/nationalnews/imus_gets_the_old_heave_ho_nationalnews_john_mazor_and_david_k__li.htm - kenvsryu, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27Name 2 people the internet could care less about?
- dime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19In related news: Water is Wet.
- plyr58, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Al Sharpton is a Reverend without a congregation and a businessman without a business. Oh wait, he does have a business: racism. He and Jessee Jackson make more money and get more press coverage off racism than anyone in history. The impact of their racism would make the KKK jealous.
@ tonyfx
What does Al Sharpton have to do with all this? Imus said something really stupid, and really ignorant, and he was called out on it. If you or anyone else was on the radio 4 hours a day for 30+ years, would you, or I, or anyone say some incredible stupid things? Absolutely. Did he make a mistake? Yes. But he certainly appears contrite and willing to accept his punishment by the network for his remarks. Should he be fired for this? Who knows. But in the end, even if he is he will just get syndicated by another network. 100,00+ listeners a day will guarantee that.
The issue here is why Al Sharpton needs to be involved. It would be one thing if Imus didn't recognize his mistake and wasn't apologetic. But he does and he is. Al Sharpton is once again lashing his bandwagon onto an issue to drum up publicity. He is a fake and a charlatan and a racist. Period. His existence as a national media personality speaks to the double standard prevalent in this country which allows African Americans to have a National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, black only scholarships, and the like. What if someone wanted to establish a National Association for the advancement of White People and set aside millions for scholarships to white only students. Would Al Sharpton stand for that? I think not. But its ok on the other side of the fence.
Oh and if Bill Cosby did call MIT students "pimply faced geeks wou will never get laid" there wouldn't be an outcry by the "white" community. A chuckle maybe. - aroundtheblock, on 11/06/2008, -14/+31What the hell is Al Sharpton anyways, a PBS-- Professional Black Person?
- bcope16, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17This story drives me crazy too. Imus talks how much on air? Every day! For how many years?! And he makes one wrong comment. He's skirting the line of being funny and edgy, and he's going to say some wrong things. I DON'T think his comment was racist. I don't think he should have to apologize to anyone, accept for maybe the girls he made the comment about. And I think the people who say it was a Racist comment are the true racist that have to make EVERYTHING about race.
In this day and age, I think racism is not prevalent, but stereotypes always will be. It's a defense mechanism of the human species that we get from or survival instincts. For instance, ask yourself this. If you saw a white guy and a black guy dressed the same, would you act differently to either one? Maybe I'm a clothist, because I see some white thuglet comin towards me at 2oClock in the morning, i'm heading the other way. I could care less if he was white black mexican or chinese. The clothes make the man, not the color of the skin. - EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20@greyghost
Your right on. Most people do not realize how badly the Irish were treated by the north. During the Civil war the Irish coming to America were given 2 choices: fight for us or go back. There were entire regiments of nothing but Irish fighters who had no idea what the war was about. Most people today do not realize what the war was about. It was about the government forcing states to do things that the people didn't want. The South was fighting against a controlling government. Slavery was not an issue until the last few months of the war, and the issue pissed off a lot of northerners who had slaves (even Abe Lincoln had slaves and didn't think there was a problem with it).
Slavery is gone and it is a very good thing that it is gone. However, I am really sick of people playing the race card in today's society when we are trying to move past racism. It only hurts everyone.
As a side note. Everyone should study the Civil War. There were many "firsts" that people do not realize. Like first areal combat (snipers in balloons), first submarine (even though it sank), first "torpedoes" (floating bombs down the river from one boat with the purpose of destroying a pursuing boat), and a ton of other cool "firsts". Plus I can guarantee that you will learn something political that is twisted and warped in modern times. From Slavery to fighting for your rights to battle tactics against civilians (General Sherman's march to the sea. And people complain about civilians targeted in the Iraq war. Ha. Nothing compaired to General Sherman) . - uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16MSNBC's New Logo:

"Al Sharpton is a Big Fat Hypocrite" will always get my dig. - CaptMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15@jobenly
It's probably not Imus who decided to show up on Sharpton's show and do all of the apologizing. It's seems likely that his hand is being forced by the spineless radio execs who don't want people associating their company with racism.
Personally, I think people should take a stand for freedom of speech and stop bowing to every minority who wants to be the only group who are allowed to say a word. I really think the "black community" could be better served by putting their energy into something else other than protesting what some guy on the radio said. - nighttrain2007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16"If you all think that is ok, no surprises there either. You all are essentially confirming what blacks already think."
Wait a minute. Who is 'you all'? White people? Wait a minute, you mean black people have a predisposed view, otherwise known as a stereotype, of white people's thoughts? Why that's racist.
Last night I turned on one of the MTV channels and watched for about an hour or so. I also looked up some lyrics from the more popular rappers of today. Interestingly, I found the word 'ho', among other distasteful words, used quite frequently. Now as I don't expect the 'Reverend' Sharpton, and the 'Reverend' Jesse Jackson to come out against those usages, I think it would be best if they just shut the hell up. Course that's just my opinion. As repulsive as I find their arrogance, I fully understand they have a right to make asses out of themselves in their quest for the Almighty Dollar - macaddct1984, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16"Jesse Jackson is not the emperor of black people!"
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15@tonyfx (#6083301) said: "If Bill Cosby said "MIT students are pimply faced geeks who will never get laid", would that spark some commentary from white media?"
Yes, it probably would, because that's not the kind of thing you'd expect to come out of the mouth of Bill Cosby. If Chris Rock said it, everyone would laugh, and it would be a funny joke.
Imus says crazy ***** all the time. I don't personally find him funny, but "nappy headed hoes" is the kind of thing I would expect to come out of his mouth.
Now, if you want to go further, and state that we should be living in a country where we don't expect those kinds of things to come out of *anyone's* mouth, I can agree with that. But you have to apply that to everyone, regardless of their race, and regardless of what race they're talking about (their own or not).
That's a long, long road. There's a lot of things that people said in the '50's - hell, the '80's - that you wouldn't expect to hear today. We are doing better, as a culture. We do have a ways to go. - KarbonKopy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15The 2 punk ass 'leaders' who play the race card and blow thing way out of proportion. F em both.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Oh right.... NAGGERS.
- wozley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14@tonyfx
You should come where I live. Majority of the population is black. You can see just how disparaging blacks can be against whites, or even other blacks who they deem "act" white. White people are the most out of touch on racism? I deal with it everyday. I may not be able to relate as a black woman, but I can relate as a human being.
Like some said about, it's a two way street. - snotrokit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16racism is a two way street there Al, tell us how you REALLY feel about non-black people.
You live by a double standard. - loquax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13How many black rappers say things like this that are beyond the pale? Imus should apologize if and only if hundreds of rap "artists" apologize first.
- JorgeGonzalez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I am so internally angry about this and our current state of political correctness. When comedians are being censored, we are in a whole world of trouble. So disappointed.
- raynar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Heres something to remember Al Sharpton (and Jesse Jackson) by..
"If it's anti-black, its whack. Kill whitey." - uberchaoslord, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13If Bill Cosby said "MIT students are pimply faced geeks who will never get laid", would that spark some commentary from white media?
I'd give him a T-shirt that read "Captain Obvious" - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13he told my dad he was.....
- Societas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Imus' comment was not motivated by contempt. That was pretty clear to me. That doesn't excuse him from the fact that he acted like a moron by saying it, but it was not hateful speech. I will agree that racism is still an issue in America, but not they way it was 40 years ago. Today the racism is generated by both whites and blacks. I feel that many blacks perpetuate racism by their actions in trying to keep the "separateness" of black American culture and not recognizing many of the problems within this separate society; constantly looking outward and never in. And in my opinion most white people dismiss blacks due to the very fact that they are seen as not wanting to conform to general society as a whole. Sure, there are hard-line racists (mostly in the southern states), but I would suppose that most of what an average black person perceives as racism in their everyday life is simply a white person too afraid to give that person a chance because of the perceived baggage black people are seen to carry.
- darkhorse85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11racism would probably be long gone if it werent for this Al Sharpton guy.
not even black people respect him. - nighttrain2007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@tonyfx
"If you are White, American, and Live in the Continental USA, you have racist thoughts and ideals. It is unavoidable. I know it does not feel good to hear it but if you run from that fundamental truth, you can never grow beyond it."
Try if you're human you have racist thoughts and ideals. Every human being no matter what race, nationality, creed, religion, etc. has views that his group, or other groups that he chooses to associate with are superior than other groups. But thanks again for trying to blame it on Whitey....
"What exists in our current society is unlike most other historical outcomes of slavery. The first time in history, a slave class could not "Buy" their way out, "Marry" their way out, or escape the inferiority being bred into them by White Masters. All slave classes throughout history could evolve upward accept the American Black"
Blacks could and did 'buy' their way out of slavery. Granted not many but then again whenever a group or race was enslaved, no large majority has every 'bought' or 'married' their way out of slavery. - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I think that cities name streets MLK in an somewhat sad attempt to guilt the people there into behaving better. Or perhaps it is just a way to officially establish that a given area is to be black.
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Paraphrased from NPR last night, and marginally tangential:
Imus has always said things that are controversial. The question is, why this, and why now? - Cwo655321, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18kevin rose, and alex albrecht :)
- williamharper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Al Sharpton made the front page?
This is a sad, sad day. - mrharvey518, on 10/12/2007, -13/+23Really? The term "nappy headed hoes" was real ***** up? And did the word 'real' require three e's, three a's and five l's? No, it didn't. It's reeeaaalllll ***** up that I am spending my Tuesday morning at work getting pissed off about this being the biggest news story of the morning.
That race jockey Sharpton is getting richer right now because of it. -
