Ain't Nobody's Business If You Do
mcwilliams.com — Don't miss the point: In our "free country" over 750,000 people are now in jail for consensual crimes. You should also know that another 2 million are now on parole or probation; over 4 million more will be arrested this year; we will spend $50 billion this year punishing people who have been convicted of consensual crimes.

- TheEngineer2008, on 05/19/2008, -1/+37Time to eliminate the nanny state. We don't need government to take care of us.

We are quickly approaching this..... - AlwaysAwake, on 05/20/2008, -0/+21Overall, in the US we have 5% of world population, and 25% of its prisoners. That $50 billion doesn't take into account all the infrastructure arresting, prosecuting, and convicting these people. It is Big Corporate Business on many levels to build, maintain, and supply these brutal caged environments. There is nothing rehabilitational about them. They are cruel and inhuman punishment inflicted by staff, or other prisoners. And big $$$ for the Secret Government.
- jollyholly, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1BS like this is just another way that 'the man' keeps us down.

- borez, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1Not true... I used to race my next door neighbor to work every morning at 6:30am, me on my Honda CBR and him in his Ford RS turbo.
I won quite often
He was British CID
- justinx0r, on 05/20/2008, -0/+13A lot of government spending and waste can be eliminated by reforming the criminal justice system. As a fiscal conservative I would gladly support the repeal of some victimless crimes. I still think we should be tough on real crime (like rape, murder, assault, theft, etc.) but it's a huge waste to put people in jail for using marijuana or whatever else.
- oldhick, on 05/20/2008, -0/+6Whats up with the "some" victimless crimes? Can you define which ones?
- sicntired, on 05/20/2008, -0/+9After "volunteering" 12 years of my life to those that know better than me what I can do with myself I am missing nothing.I only wish Ron Paul was in the oval office.I know he could care less what I do in mine.Canada is currently being run like a dictatorship because the opposition is hiding and allowing Mr.Harper to do as he chooses.
- slcseifist, on 05/20/2008, -6/+0Oh and 30% of those in Jail are illegal aliens, but they are just here to find work... right?
- fancypantscz, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5What the hell does this have to do with illegal aliens? The US 'Justice System' is being misused by legislators who promote bad policy and AMERICANS are suffering. Law enforcement should be used to protect our rights when they are infringed upon, not to bring about social change. I don't care who it is, if they damage someone's property or person, they should suffer the legal consequences. The point is that trying to shape someone's social behavior through legislation and law enforcement is a self-defeating notion.
- slcseifist, on 05/20/2008, -1/+0College campus's and employers do more oppression in the form of imposing political correctness as a means to control behavior than the Justice department ever has or ever will do.
- fancypantscz, on 05/21/2008, -0/+2True, but do you understand the difference between private and public institutions? If you don't like what private institutions are preaching then you have the right not to be a student or employee. My issue is with politicians using public institutions like the justice department in an attempt to force social change and there is simply nothing I can do to escape it except leave the country.
- slcseifist, on 05/26/2008, -0/+0I understand the difference, that doesn't mean that the private institute is right in what it is doing. Furthermore, considering college campuses pride themselves on freedom of speech it is hypocritical that they handicap it.

- dildoolielly, on 05/20/2008, -2/+13LAND OF THE FREE MY ASS!!!
The US has the biggest prison population in the world and the highest rate of prisoners per capita of all countries – including countries that President Bush believes need liberating by US armed forces.
Even China, with one party rule and a population that is 4.5 times larger than the US population, has 30% fewer total prisoners than the US. China’s per capita rate is a small fraction of the US rate.
The US prison population per capita is three times higher than "axis of evil" country Iran, five times higher than Tanzania, and seven times higher than a civilized European country like Germany.
One out of every 142 Americans is in prison – and this does not include military prisons or INS jails.
America builds more prisons than schools
America builds more prisons than ANY OTHER COUNTRY per capita.
America imprisons more of their citizens for non violent crimes than ANY OTHER COUNTRY per capita.
America manufactures and exports more weapons than ANY OTHER COUNTRY.
America is so far from a free country it isn't even funny. The corporate owned news networks, the wire tapping, the rigged elections...I could go on but won't. Just go ahead and believe the rhetoric about people 'hating freedom and democracy' fed to you by Bush and Fox News while the country continues its downward spiral into self-destruction.
For your reference America has a conservative party with two right wings, known as the Republicans and Democrats. Neither one can provide long term answers when they focus on short term solutions to appease lobbyists.
So ignorant children of Amerika, keep spouting your ignorant BS strewn with the psychological buzzwords like, "freedom," "democracy," and other abstractions that are molded to serve autocratic/plutocratic ends.
Wilkommen to Amerika, Fools!- ciaran036, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1Right on...
Any time war is brought up, the non-pacifists always use WW2 as an excuse for every single war since... they always say something ridiculous like we would have all been speaking German if Hitler had have got his way and all that... utterly ridiculous...
And as you have just pointed out - what different would it have really made?
- ciaran036, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1Right on...
- Mariasha, on 05/20/2008, -0/+14I miss Ron Paul. :'(

- oldhick, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3Eh? He introduces legislation all the time. He does everything within his power... Is he supposed to magically save the world with his lucky charms???
- shutaro, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1That's what Obama would do...

- plimpton777, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2How many incarcerated Americas would be given amnesty on the first day of a Ron Paul administration? Something like half a million? ***** ridiculous. That's why I gave Ron Paul $2300, but I'm only giving Obama my vote. He's not freeing anyone.
- ciaran036, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1He's still in the race!! well, kind of...

- NaziHatinChimp, on 05/20/2008, -1/+7It is NOT a Free country.
- Calamier, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3There is a reason that jail time is given to drug offenders, excluding marijuana, most of the other "harsh" drugs are addictive and cause people to act out of character either while high or while seeking to get high. I have seen this personally in my life and the lives of 80% of my friends around me.
When I try to project the future in my mind, I can't imagine people "campaigning against poverty", the kind of poverty that is brought about by a crack addict who buys drugs instead of paying the rent, buying groceries, or god forbid starting a savings account.
It is IMPOSSIBLE to argue that a society where drugs did not exist would be FAR more productive than a society such as ours.
No...People don't campaign against poverty, you simply fight it now, fight the bonds of government slavery only to subject yourselves to another master. - XISUPERMANIX, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5http://digg.com/educational/American_Drug_War
documentary that is kind of long but worth it.- kemp34, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Good documentary.
- ciaran036, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1The link's dead but what's the conclusion of the story - that thousands of people are being arrested all the time for doing drugs and the real criminals (drug pushers) getting away scot-free?
- brjohnson789, on 05/20/2008, -1/+7To paraphrase "1984": The point of all these laws is not 'justice' or 'safety' but to make sure everyone is a criminal, so that the gov't ultimately has control over everyone.
- kemp34, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2Exactly.

Died from being denied access to Marijuana for his nausea symptoms - choked on his own vomit. - Bronnster, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Nothing wrong with marijuana except that someone is gonna lose profits. I can definitely live with that. Legalize it now.
