- SQLserver, on 03/02/2009, -11/+81It isn't just the US; several other rational countries are boycotting this insanity.
I used to like the UN, or at least the idea behind it. It used to be about stopping fascism and spreading human rights.
This has opened my eyes to the effect that the UN is no longer a club of the friendly, free, equality-based countries. Instead, countries who don't care at all about human rights have taken over the club.
Just look at this anti-blasphemy law the UN just passed:

That's insane! You can't criticize religions, "especially islam"?
Whether you are with Israel or not, there are human rights issues across the globe, ESPECIALLY in Sharia Law controlled countries.
I'm a liberal, and I've always support cooperation between countries, but western countries in the UN are being waaaay too soft. We are being pushed out of our own club! Don't boycott this conference, for Christ's sake, kick any country that refuses to change its position on human rights out of the conference and the UN! - haterofps3, on 03/02/2009, -12/+65Muslim Nations are pushing an agenda through the UN and they have the votes to mandate Anti-Free Speech Laws.
Canada and the US not attending is hopefully the correct action but it is a sad state of affairs that someone gave Libya and Iran the ability to dictate law to the Nations that form the UN. - REBECCAFRIEDMAN, on 03/02/2009, -21/+59I'd like to publicly give the Obama administration credit for having the courage to take a stand that says we will not be part of something that just amounts to hate speech. Well done.
- haterofps3, on 03/02/2009, -14/+50So you think that we should participate in this anti-free speech conference? You honestly think that Obama should change the state departments decision simply because it would be change?
Did you hit your head on the way down the crazy stairs? - missinglink, on 03/02/2009, -13/+41I'm interested to see your public praise for the Bush Administration when he did the same thing...
- Pake, on 03/03/2009, -2/+26Read more about this. What they want to do is limit free speech by making it illegal to speech ill about religions, but in the process they were tossing insults at Israel and Judaism itself. Those hypocrites don't deserve the time and day.
- missinglink, on 03/02/2009, -12/+35Uh, no. I think Bush was right (but he got hammered for criticizing the UN and daring to pull out of something that was superficially anti-racism).
My point isn't about the policy - it's about the coverage. - yonoz, on 03/02/2009, -3/+21The UN has a "one nation, one vote" rule. There are some 57 Muslim nations in the UN, you can't out-vote them.
- sultanknish, on 03/02/2009, -10/+28Durban has been seized by the radical fringe, and is a symptom of how Muslim nations in the UN hold human rights issues hostage, thereby suppressing real human rights issues, and using it as a prop to conduct a religious war against Israel.
The situation in the Human Rights Council is typical where outright genocidal nations such as Sudan get a seat, and the prime topic of business is denouncing Israel. - missinglink, on 03/02/2009, -39/+57And the Obama Administration continues yet another policy that the Bush Administration was raked over the coals for.
I guess the only "change" we are getting is the way that the same policies are being covered by the same pundits. - PottSie2, on 03/03/2009, -2/+19Remember kids, it's only racism if it comes from an anglo-white western who lives in a country that allows all cultures and creeds to migrate to.
- jeremymerrill, on 03/03/2009, -1/+16No one is stopping the U.N. from speaking how it wants. They can say whatever hateful ***** they want. That's free speech, and it's the American way to let them do it. But it's also the American way to shun those saying hateful things. That's freedom of association and that, too, is the American way. America isn't going to stand idly by and let Iran put America's imprimatur on hateful speech. It's that simple.
- RondaWithoutaH, on 03/02/2009, -5/+18I wondered how long it would take.
- lead2thehead, on 03/03/2009, -3/+15Exactly. When Bush does it, he's an arrogant jackass cowboy idiot who doesn't respect international opinion. But when Obama does it, he's a freaking hero.
- mysmartypants, on 03/03/2009, -5/+16We should hold a "festival of muslim abuse of women over the centuries"......or maybe a "festival of modern day honor killings"......or maybe a "festival of marrying prepubescent 12 year girls".....or maybe a "festival of stupid guys in beards trying to kill others to make up for their tiny penis sizes"
- lead2thehead, on 03/03/2009, -2/+13And all this time, I thought the anti-west sentiment was because of Bush. Turns out they're just a bunch of *****. Who would have guessed?
- thegrantman, on 03/02/2009, -4/+13It's good to hear a liberal speaking rationally on the subject.
- sn4ke666, on 03/03/2009, -2/+10The decision whether or not to participate has nothing to do with denying freedom of speech. We're not talking about a newspaper or an independent group - the UN is a policy making body. They can rail all they want against Israel as far as the US is concerned. The issue at hand is that they are trying to push a law into effect: a law that blatantly holds Israel to a different standard than any other nation, that allows genocidal nations like the Sudan to judge anything, and that expects to infringe on liberal Western democracies' commitment to upholding freedom of speech within their own borders.
- inactive, on 03/03/2009, -3/+10So an anti-racism conference is filled with racist accusations and judgments? That's irony if I've ever seen it before.
- BassMasterP, on 03/03/2009, -4/+11when was the last time anyone listened to the UN?
"dude, you can't say that about Islam, that's blasphemy"
"what are you going to do about it?"
"uh......" - pinchduck, on 03/03/2009, -0/+7The number of thugs and jackasses who run countries far exceeds the genuine democracies. That is why the U.N. has turned into a joke on many issues. Think about that the next time someone espouses a one-world government. The probability that it will be run by someone like Mugabi or or Amin is far higher than that of being run by another Churchill or Lincoln.
- lead2thehead, on 03/03/2009, -2/+9Check it out... I'm violating international law.
http://brianakira.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/moha ... - scamper22, on 03/03/2009, -1/+8I'll drink to that cracker
- tenth8sphere, on 03/03/2009, -2/+8Filling the vacant US seat: Mel Gibson
- inactive, on 03/02/2009, -9/+15Well, reduce the number of Muslim nations then ;)
- BridgeBurner, on 03/03/2009, -2/+8Is that an article or a commentary? I can't tell.
- inactive, on 03/03/2009, -32/+38THIS SENTENCE SUMMARIZES EVERYTHING WRONG ABOUT ISRAEL IN THE MEDIA TODAY.
"...........withdrew the U.S. delegation after it became an anti-Israel, anti-free speech debacle."
Criticizing Israel is FREEDOM OF SPEECH.
Does anyone else notice everytime criticism of Israel is voiced, it is COMPLETELY DECIMATED by a tirade of connotative words such as "anti-semantic" "hate mongering" "racist" "terrorist" "anti-freedom". - ak666jk, on 03/03/2009, -0/+6Bush was right in doing it, and so is Obama. Unfortunately, the people who wanted to make Bush look worse were louder, and are now less inclined to say anything because they all rooted for Obama. Politics don't need to make sense, they only need to be easily manipulated.
- REBECCAFRIEDMAN, on 03/03/2009, -7/+13missinglink - I have a deep and profound appreciation for everything President Bush did for the State of Israel. While far from a perfect president, he had no problem standing up for the right of a sovereign nation to defend itself. And his refusal to participate in Durban was just one of many courageous stands he took.
- godzillaWax, on 03/03/2009, -3/+8How dare -- HOW DARE -- anyone cast light on the atrocities Israel continues to perpetrate.
- syndustry, on 03/03/2009, -0/+5well if all 50 states secede from the union...we'll have 49 extra votes...problem solved...
by "we" I mean the west... - Barackalypse, on 03/03/2009, -2/+7Congratulations to Obama for not being a party to this sham of a proceeding, I'm pleasantly surprised.
- inactive, on 03/03/2009, -4/+8Racism this, Racism that, fanatics this, extremist that...so what else is new in this ***** up world of ours? oh look a squirrel!
- inactive, on 03/03/2009, -2/+5Call it anti-semitic if you like - human beings behaving poorly must always be confronted whether they be christian, jew, muslim, Israeli, American, British, buddhist, pagan, atheist, child, virgin, little old lady, truck driver dying of cancer ... the list goes on and on. Bad behavior is bad behavior. It ought to never be tolerated but, of course, responses to bad behavior ought to always be compassionate and lenient when leniency is called for.
It doesn't matter if you are Israeli and a jew - if you behave like an ass, you're an ass. In my experience, it's not your religion or your politics or your culture that makes you an ass. It's what you've decided to be and if one justification doesn't work, another one will. It's also be true in my experience that many good people are good quite in spite of the ridiculous religion, politics or culture they happen to profess.
Be a good human being or continue being an ass. Your choice ... and the consequences that go along with it. - JekJob, on 03/03/2009, -5/+8Where's your praise for Obama?
- ryan83189, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3The "A" is proper in this case, to avoid repeating the "n".
- maynardw, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3Ad hominem ftl?
- Hetman, on 03/03/2009, -5/+8There is racism everywhere. It cannot just be solved with a debate. It takes years and years of mutual understanding between races. It will happen, as the world gets more and more globalized.
- RAGEdemon, on 03/03/2009, -11/+14Why is it when one criticises anyone's religion or race, it is called racism but when it involves the jews, it's called anti-semitism?
And worse, anti-semitism is perceived by society to be far worse than racism. Obviously it means that criticising jews is worse than criticising anyone of any other creed. Why is this? Why are they so special?
Of course, it is no secret that they control most of the media, and the media controls the people and the government... say anything against the jews and you will be labled an anti-semite by the jew controlled media, instantly burying your political career.
Anyone speaking ill of israel will never be elected into any office... is there any wonder the elected officials give them billions per year and support them blind no matter how many civillian deaths they cause or how much land they grab?
Land of the Free... lol. - NorrisOBE, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3ok
- winter360, on 03/03/2009, -1/+4i think that ^ is why they are holding a conference
- MrARPA, on 03/03/2009, -1/+4This article reads like it was written by someone from the Bush administration. Perhaps the author of it is surprised the rest of the world finds many of Israel's actions abhorrent and unacceptable - in which case I'd have to ask which planet he lives on ?
- inactive, on 03/02/2009, -14/+17Can someone answer this; is Israel the only country being singled out and attacked? If so, then I agree there should be revisions to the draft, but if they are among many then properly addressing the Israel-Palestinian conflict in the context of racism, xenophobia and racial discrimination is not anti-Semitic. I doubt it's all about Israel, if Muslims have been campaigning for wording that would equate criticism of a religious faith with a violation of human rights. Seems like everyone is just full of ***** and placing conditions for the participation in the meeting. Why bother having a racism conference if you're just going to be superficial.
- inactive, on 03/03/2009, -2/+4Why should Obama go to this? Why should you not have the right to criticize religion? I think it's great that Obama isn't going and I'm very critical of him.
- Obermeister, on 03/03/2009, -0/+2I get the impression that we pulled out of this for the wrong reasons. When I look at it the main issue is the "defamation of religion" stuff. The International Humanist and Ethical Union has been fighting the Islamic states for years on that point. We should be blasting the conference for that, not for the criticism of Israel, for which, Israel deserves plenty.
- graphictruth, on 03/05/2009, -0/+2I actually wish that was true in practice. Could be. But it has to be taught.
- inactive, on 03/03/2009, -2/+4Good for Obama, I'm no fan of him but this is great of him.
- ramilehti, on 03/03/2009, -4/+6Once in a while the pro-zionist lobby gets an article to digg's front page. And rules the comment thread as well.
This is one of those articles.
US should have attended that conference. As should have all others. Israel is one of the worst racist states in the world. Certainly the most weaponized. Stop supporting hate. - inactive, on 03/03/2009, -2/+4We are *verrrry close* to the point Israel can't play the "we are being persecuted RACISM six millions jews ZOMFG" card anymore.
First we'll get a major comedian who ridicules them. Just watch it, wait for an open media quote of a comedian who has, as part of the act, using "racism racism!!" as a stick to beat critics over the head with. Then the dam will burst and everybody will start using this in-joke.
Pretty soon Israeli expansionists will stand barenaked, muttering, no apartheid ammo left to conduct their private little ethnic cleansing. Soon after the US will drop Israel, and soon after that Israel will move an inch, Hamas will with away and die, and we'll have a working treaty. - Treshnell, on 03/03/2009, -0/+2It'll never completely happen. As long as there is any kind of individuality someone will hate it.
