- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -4/+30I'm going to go with neither.
Iran aren't building nuclear weapons for military use what so ever.
The president has even said that many times. It would be INSANE to build a nuke. What does a nuke achieve? The soviets had 50,000 nukes? What happened to them? The leadership in Iran know this.
They are building nuclear facilities for CHEAP ENERGY.
It's that simple
And these facilities have been inspected by the IAE many times with no abnormalities.
Enough with the fear-mongering propaganda, we don't want another war. - atomicpoet, on 04/06/2009, -4/+29I'm going to go with act of insecurity. We have America at both sides of their borders. And we have an American government that has shown no bones about taking down governments they don't find democratic enough. What would you do if you were Iran?
- quaxon, on 04/07/2009, -6/+30All you idiots who are gonna claim Iran is not peaceful and clamor the whole "they sponsors terrorism around the world" need to open your eyes a bit. The US has sponsored and committed more act of terrorism amd unprovoked aggression around the world (mainly in south america, the middle east as well as Asian countries such as Cambodia and Laos whose citizens are still getting blown up by land-mines left by the US) in the last 50 years alone than all of the extremist muslim groups combined, not to mention the shooting down of an iranair civilian jumbo jet with hundreds of innocent people on board in the 80s. If there is any country that deserves to be wiped off the map, nuked, or any of the other things you guys say should happen to iran its america. Honestly, when was the last time Iranians decided to launch a random war for geopolitical domination or natural resources?
please id really love for anyone to show me how many civilians have died through acts of terrorism at the hands of muslim jihadist compared to the millions plus the US has left dead in the last decade. - dukeeeey, on 04/07/2009, -0/+10It's like weapons of mass destruction in Iraq all over again. It's only the west which says the Iranians want to build a bomb. Let's not forget Haliburton sold Iran pretty much everything it needed to enrich uranium.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A582 ...
Let's get straight to the point. Iran has a lot of oil and the Americans want it. And they are prepared to kill a lot of people for it. Remember the USA is also the only country to have ever used a nuke on another. - dukeeeey, on 04/07/2009, -1/+9Iran used to have a pro west democratic government. But your CIA overthrew it in the 50's because Iran privatised the oil fields and kicked the western oil companies out.
- Bhima, on 04/07/2009, -2/+8You say that like Oil is limitless. Like you believe the stated reserves of OPEC and that you have enough information to base your assessments.
Interesting that a group of people who do have access to the details of their oil reserves develops a keen interest in alternative power. - fuse13, on 04/07/2009, -1/+6bush announced they were the enemy in the axis of evil speech. the iranians are no stranger to a devastating invasion upon their soil that was incidentally supported by the usa in a delightfully even handed style by supplying BOTH nations with arms at various stages of the conflict. ive talked to men who were in those trenches. they were fighting for the survival of their national identity, not crazed zealots. you see giant murals of sad men who died all over tehran. sadly, iran is run by a group of men the world portrays as religious zealots, but most iranians i have met call them corrupt hypocrites.
the saddest part is that the iranian people, who have been eroding the strictness of the muslim law, will suffer most if iran gets nukes. the country will be safe from foreign invasion. the regime can concetrate on its internal threats now that the real and present threats on both the east and west are neutralised. - BSGAdama, on 04/07/2009, -0/+5You guys have any idea who these ***** are? Besides the Sadjadpoud guy the rest of them are ***** hardcore neocons.
- 08STI, on 04/07/2009, -2/+7Open my console.
sv_gravity 0.
Wait for them to jump.
They'll never see it coming. - LordMaude, on 04/07/2009, -0/+4Don't you mean 'nationalised'?
- akhomestead, on 04/07/2009, -0/+3You gotta wonder what's the real agenda here. I think it's something other than threats of nukes that our government is concerned about.
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -1/+4Well look at our reaction to North Korea. As soon as they got the bomb we completely ignored them. And I seriously doubt Iran is going for a bomb anyways.
And damn remember that war drums the media starting beating a few months before the election? Was exactly like they did for Iraq. It seemed like for sure there was going to be some kind of attack. - IKORKYI, on 04/07/2009, -1/+4the energy there is already so cheap because of natural gas reserves
its not agression or insecurity, its whatever you call it when a child wants something because all the other kids have it, then they throw a temper tantrum - fuse13, on 04/07/2009, -2/+5they need clean energy more than cheap energy. tehran is horrendously smoggy. like coughing and choking smoggy at times.
- pigfister, on 04/07/2009, -0/+3didn't Iraq have wmd as well. iran eh, think of all that oil and dominance of the middle east.
never mind about thinking about the USA using white phosphorous and depleted uranium munitions around the globe, or thousands upon thousands of mercenaries so the USA can't be held accountable, how much do mercs get paid exactly!
BE AFRAID EVERYONE, BE VERY AFRAID! - Susarodr1981, on 04/07/2009, -1/+4I think that Iran is gonna be peaceful with it's power
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -0/+3I'd say neither. I agree with the other posters they are just trying to get ahead in the scientific / economic / enviromental world.
They too see the need to advance science, clean up their air inspite of the extremely cheap oil prices. That's just smart thinking.
I have never understood why the world thinks it's ok for a clearly aggressive and repressive people like the Israelisch to own nukes but when it comes to Iran everybody is riding the fear mongering train again.
I say go for it Iran. ***** the US and Israel. They'll never nuke you anyway. Iran != Iraq or Afghanistan. - FigAlert, on 04/07/2009, -0/+3Just another example of bright-white collar criminals getting away with it for all to see: the esteemed Eliot Abrams. One of the big players in the Iran-Contra travesty, still accorded respect and dignity. One more reason why so many of us hate the fascist tendencies of this country. ***** you forever, Mr. Abrams. ***** criminal.
- jjason1985, on 04/07/2009, -0/+3Sweet talking points. /s
You have characterized a group of people as nothing more than a bunch of ravenous, suicidal, animals. Everyone has the desire for self preservation. Historically, just about every country has been willing to sacrifice their citizens for their own political agenda. (name one who hasn't) - billricardi, on 04/07/2009, -0/+2What? An intelligent debate of respectful people with opposing views who are using facts and recalling real events to support their cases?!
OH! It's Fora. Of course.
By the way, the full program is 1 hour 23 minutes. Skipping around, it looks like the debate is strong and high quality all the way through. Click on Full Program under the video toolbar to see it. - CressCrowbits, on 04/07/2009, -0/+2Sorry I was about to bury you after I misread that as 'giant murals of sand men'.
But back to your point, I agree but history makes me doubt the threat (or indeed reality) of foreign invasion would lead to a better quality of life and more freedoms for it's people. - jabberwolffff, on 04/07/2009, -4/+6HA... HAHAHAHA
They are sitting on lakes of oil....
They are sitting on the second largest supply of natural gas reserve in the world...
Their economy is crap and they depend on higher oil prices to drive their economy.
Their leaders hate Israel and want the 12th imam to come, pray for his return before and after speeches, and have prepared cities for his return.
And you guys SERIOUSLY think they want nuclear technology for peaceful, clean, cheap energy...really??
I mean REALLY!??!??!
With all these facts in your face you REALLY think peace and clean energy is what they want?
OMFG then there is no hope for those that believe in this crap aside from giving you all helmets, have you eat paste, and sit in the corner.. becuse you're fricken retarded!! - Bodhinature, on 04/10/2009, -0/+2Yes, and the US has never ever supported terrorist organizations or ruthless totalitarian governments. So, what's your point?
- sponeil, on 04/07/2009, -1/+3The US government usurped Iran's first attempt at a democratic government because it was too democratic. They were worried the Iranians would elect the wrong person to run the country (i.e. wrong for US interests). Iran, who had thought of the US as a friend up to that point, felt betrayed. They took everyone at the US embassy hostage, and the US cried foul. I guess Iran was just being petty or something. I mean, we wouldn't have minded at all if Iranian spies had decided to overthrow our government.
The US does not fight for democracy or freedom. The US fights to keep itself on top. When they can justify it publicly, they send in the military and the CIA. When they can't, they just send in the CIA. - Sogui, on 04/07/2009, -5/+6Right because the country with the 2nd largest oil and natural gas reserves IN THE WORLD needs cheap energy!
Hell even the United States, where we pay FAR more for our oil than they do... it's not that cheap to build nuclear power. It takes billions to set up and secure these plants and only once we've invested tens of billions of dollars do we start seeing cheaper energy in the very long run.
That's why there's such skepticism to Iran's "nuclear energy", unless they found a secret to building cheap nuclear plants (they haven't) it doesn't make sense for a country sitting on vast reserves of cheap energy and claims that it needs to invest billions into nuclear technology that at best would deliver small savings.
They will probably build a few nuclear plants but I don't doubt that somewhere their scientists are using the fuel to try and build their country's nuclear capability. - BotchaMcCoola, on 04/07/2009, -0/+1Duh. With the US attacking and occupying adjacent countries and also lately threatening to bring civil war to Pakistan why should they want nulear deterence.
- cherrysweet00, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1what about an act of sovereign, pro-commerce-ness? nah...it's both insecurity and aggression. See "North Korea" for other examples...At least the NK's propaganda machine keeps churning out the comic relief. C'mon Iran: where are the inane statements?
- daniel940, on 09/27/2009, -0/+1http://thoriumenergyinc.blogspot.com/2008/04/us-le ...
THORIUM is an alternative fuel that's a powerful as uranium, can be used in retrofitted reactors, is made in the US (by Thorium Power, Inc.), supported by a new Harry Reid/Orrin Hatch bull, and CAN'T BE USED TO MAKE BOMBS! - jjason1985, on 04/07/2009, -0/+1Evangelical Christians, often credited with electing conservative republicans to the white house, pray for the end of days. They assert that Israel must be given to the Jews so that Christ may return to earth and cast all non-Christians into the fires of hell. Evangelicals base their support of Israel on Bible prophecies such as Ezekiel 36:24--"I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land"--and on God's original gift of the land to Abraham and his descendants (Genesis 17).
Do you think that WE want nukes for peaceful purposes? Look at Pakistan, nukes = sovereignty (more or less). If we want to discourage nuclear proliferation, we need to respect the sovereignty of other countries. - tr0j, on 04/07/2009, -5/+5To say that any country deserves to be wiped off the map (which is what you said despite shrouding it with an *if* ) proves you are a part of the problem, regardless of your nationality, ethnicity or faith. And every nationality, ethnicity and faith has problems. You are not going to win anyone over to your way of thinking by saying they deserve nuking.
- Metasquares, on 04/07/2009, -1/+1And in between their protests that their nuclear program is for peaceful use, they shout about mass graves and call for Israel to be wiped off of the map.
- MrSteamTank, on 04/07/2009, -1/+1You should of replaced democratic with "following USA's interests". Since the USA has taken down many governments that were democratically elected.
- Gixxer18, on 04/07/2009, -1/+1Lesson learned - don't mess with America.
- Licurgo, on 04/07/2009, -3/+3if they are smart enough to build a bomb, they are smart enough to know they shouldn't build one
- fuse13, on 04/07/2009, -0/+0iran imports petrol. look it up.
- heystoopid, on 04/10/2009, -1/+1Mossad is that you ?
- jackmarlin, on 06/24/2009, -0/+0Maybe it is Mossad
http://www.pumashoes.biz/ - scottsoperson, on 09/01/2009, -0/+0http://www.merip.org/mer/mer230/230_beinin.html
israel brutally stole the land. - fuse13, on 04/07/2009, -0/+0@CressCrowbits agreed. with real life problems, there isnt always a simple solution. in the meantime, the iranian people will continue to suffer.
- Memitim, on 04/07/2009, -2/+1Heh, if Iran is actually developing nuclear technology for reactors and not for weapons, then the Iranian government is full of idiots. They've got the most powerful nation on the planet and a highly aggressive local neighbor both repeatedly making threats against them. If Iran doesn't smarten up, like North Korea did by building out their artillery fusillade in the mountains pointed at South Korea, and present some significant counter threat then they're likely to find themselves liberated.
- Gixxer18, on 04/07/2009, -2/+1What would I do if I was Iran?
Kill myself because I suck so much and am crazy and unstable. - Rudegar, on 04/07/2009, -3/+1do the Hokey Pokey
- dbixler, on 04/07/2009, -2/+0As soon as Iran uses a nuclear weapon preemptively (a horrible tragedy without comparison), it would cease to exist as a civilization. So, if they intend on doing this it would be in history's best interest to move anything of historical value out of the country now before it becomes dust. I suppose in their twisted sense of logic, they may think of it as a "Martyr Country." The suicide bomber of immense proportion.
- Psicho, on 04/07/2009, -5/+3Chomsky is strong in you, my friend :)
- jabberwolffff, on 04/07/2009, -8/+1because having tons of oil and natural gas reservers, depending on high oil prices for your economy, threatening to destroy Israel, wishing for the 12th imam before and after speeches, giving money to Hezbollah and Hamas as well as sending money to martyrs families who blow themselves up....
YES that kinda does lean towards being a threat and supporting terrorism... just a weeeee bit.
Oh and the jumbo jet, sorry pilots who ignore warnings in their own language who are on a downward decent, either kill their own passengers out of plain insanity or plain idiocy.
Iran is home to the Basij- This is where iran trained kids that they can walk across landmines or charge oncoming fire (without weapons) and die as martyrs for "allah". This is a country that celebrated sacrificing their children with a blood fountain, out of rememberance and "respect". So next time if you wonder if Iran is capable of sacrificing their citizens for their own political agenda - the answer is historically YES!!!
