- clvngodess, on 03/24/2009, -24/+83"One of the linchpins of the Bush presidency, especially during the first term (and well into the second, until he became a major political liability), was the lock-step uncritical reverence – often bordering on cult-like glorification – which the “conservative” movement devoted to the "Commander-in-Chief."
Yep. Although I wouldn't be so kind as to say "cult like." It is a CULT in it's every action, the language, strategies and tactics. It lives and breathes as cults do.
"Two months into Obama’s presidency, one can clearly conclude that this is true. Even though Obama unsurprisingly and understandably remains generally popular with Democrats and liberals alike, there is ample progressive criticism of Obama in a way that is quite healthy and that reflects a meaningful difference between the “conservative movement” and many progressives."
Yep. This is healthy discourse. As it should be, across the aisle. - Tr3mulant, on 03/25/2009, -19/+76I couldn't agree with this article more. I voted for Obama and generally support him, but I'd be the first to tell you I don't think he's perfect, and in reality he's far from it. We should all carry this attitude towards our political leaders and break out of this "us vs. them," "left vs. right" paradigm and give criticism and praise alike where it's due.
- inactive, on 03/25/2009, -15/+56Stupidity comes in many packages from left to right.
- Echota, on 03/24/2009, -28/+69A conservative will tell a lie faster then a progressive will and swear they're telling the truth while they're looking you in the face.
- jadenton, on 03/25/2009, -4/+45Conservatives will then convince themselves that they have told the truth, and will continue to believe that they have even in the face of evidence to the contrary.
- drew52686, on 03/25/2009, -19/+46The key difference between conservatives and liberals is they differing ways each group views the world. I have had countless discussion with numerous conservatives and it always ends at an impasse. Conservatives see the world with a black and white, you're either with us or against us, good or evil mentality. Conversely, liberals acknowledge shades of gray, understand the subtly of actions and consequences and realize you don't have to be with us not to be against us. I know not all who consider themselves a conservative or a liberal fit into the aforementioned descriptions, but, from my experience, this is the case.
- rrouse, on 03/24/2009, -30/+55Republicans behave like pack animals, dogs and wolfs. They attack as team. Democratics are more like grazing animals, horses and cows they can be herded but don't act as a team.
- method7670, on 03/25/2009, -7/+30It hasn't been nearly long enough to call him a success or failure (Obama). I voted for him and I will wait a while to see what he does. However, I feel like he is at least trying, where as the Bush administration had the perception of falling asleep at the wheel, and just genuinely not giving a damn and having a party with the power they had.
- RatatRatR, on 03/25/2009, -2/+24What those people do is not "criticism" at all.
Many of us liberals who voted for Obama never said he was anything but the slightly more human of two corporate products. The point is, the notion that we're all on his jock no matter what he does is one more illusion created by "Rush and his fellow patriots." - novenator, on 03/25/2009, -2/+21Other than just ranting, what exactly about THE ARTICLE did you find worthy of mention?
- method7670, on 03/25/2009, -2/+20Rush is the same person who made fun of Michel J. Fox for having Parkinson's disease.
That is a real classy guy the republicans follow. - jeffbw, on 03/25/2009, -0/+17It's called "remaining on message."
- Mattwdj, on 03/25/2009, -1/+17Yea rush totally held bush responsible for all his mistakes.
- enantiodromia, on 03/25/2009, -1/+17i see the problem: you don't know the difference between "criticize" and "demonize".
- novenator, on 03/25/2009, -1/+16Spam, spam, spam, spam, buried and reported because I have seen you spam this at least a half dozen times already.
- frankdozier, on 08/10/2009, -7/+22I would challenge you to do some traveling abroad before talking about "evidence"
- Aadain, on 03/25/2009, -1/+16For my first time, THIS!!!!!! You would not believe how many people I've hard arguments with that lived in a black and white world. You can just not talk with these people about complex ideas or issues because they will pick one fact or point and then sum everything up as good/bad, right/wrong, etc. When given a third choice they just look at you like you've suddenly started speaking ancient Egyptian and will refuse to consider it as anything but "wrong" or "bad" since its not their choice.
- Squeeself, on 03/25/2009, -2/+16Ok, lemme get the fact that I'm a fairly liberal Democrat out of the way...and then say, this kind of crap is stupid. These kind of overgeneralizations of "that other party" hurts BOTH ways. The hypocrisy and self-righteousness goes across partisan lines, as this article CLEARLY demonstrates, but not in the way it intends. We don't need this kind of talk. All it does is promote more of the same.
The reality is, the two parties are more alike than either side is willing to admit. True "progressives" don't turn around for childish name-calling; they let the squabbling siblings fall behind because it really doesn't matter :P - LeftieLucy, on 03/25/2009, -3/+17Well said - I think you're right about the black & white v. shades of grey.
- novenator, on 03/25/2009, -4/+18here comes the part where Logrusmage replies to every single comment on the thread.
- creepermclurker, on 03/25/2009, -0/+14Brandysdaman, you have a thing for the President. Do you think he's the Messiah or something?
- jeffbw, on 03/25/2009, -1/+14Whoa, nice little racist video. "Adding comments has been disabled for this video" probably because YouTube had had enough of the n word and Obama being called a jungle bunny.
- jeffbw, on 03/25/2009, -7/+20Actually, all the evidence quite backs them up.
- novenator, on 03/25/2009, -4/+16There is a difference between progressives and conservatives. RTFA
- creepermclurker, on 03/25/2009, -5/+17Woe, you're right, Echota, that WAS fast.
- zacharytelschow, on 03/25/2009, -4/+15Democrats are now accepting policies they screamed from the rooftops were idiocy (Gitmo policy and Iraq among them) just because Obama is now the man behind the desk in the Oval Office and conservatives are the pack animals?
- Barackalypse, on 03/25/2009, -10/+21Buried for promoting the false left/right, progressive/neoconservative dichotomy as if there is any real difference between the two. The Government gets bigger and the people lose liberty no matter which one is running things.
- enantiodromia, on 03/25/2009, -1/+12it's funny that you guys can't decide if Obama is the Christ, or, your gay sex fantasy.
- kooredaan, on 03/25/2009, -1/+11That just shows you haven't turned on the Daily Show since Obama was inaugurated.
- raeshao, on 03/25/2009, -0/+10I prefer seeing in color.
- novenator, on 03/25/2009, -1/+11I agree. However, as was demonstrated so vividly during the ARRA fiasco, the conservatives are more interested in bringing down Obama and the Democrats than compromising to help fix the country.
I refer you to: http://digg.com/political_opinion/Obama_GOP_Just_A ... - enantiodromia, on 03/25/2009, -1/+11very true.
- eco57, on 03/25/2009, -5/+15Correction: Bush already destroyed the country - Obama's trying to put it back together.
- ZenMojo, on 03/25/2009, -1/+11Remember that, folks. Just because we're criticizing Obama doesn't mean he's any less popular. We're just more responsible than the other side.
Speaking of which, even though the media keeps saying AIG is Obama's Katrina and that popular anger is tearing him apart...his approval ratings are actually UP.
http://www.gallup.com/poll/116224/Obama-Approval-R ... - Deeh, on 03/25/2009, -4/+13Canadian here: Trust me, it's good. Not one person bitches about their free health care.
- pilotsnob, on 03/25/2009, -11/+19Are you kidding me...the "left" has been vocal in their criticizm of Obama? All I hear from the left is covering their own backsides. Dodd can't decide how the language for the AIG bonuses got in the Porkulus Bill, Barney Frank obviously believes the best defense is to play offense, and F. Raines is keeping all his Fannie/Freddie money. The left isn't criticizing Obama...it is coming from people like Mark Levin, who value the Constitution, and see that Barry is determined to take from us our inalienable rights, and make all of us government-owned comrades.
- jadenton, on 03/25/2009, -22/+30Next time, vote for a real liberal. Vote Kunich.
- CaptOblivious, on 03/25/2009, -3/+11Everyone that actually did was thrown out of the party and marginalized by the "true conservatives" running the republican party.
And as a progressive I can say that while I don't believe that they were really conservatives, they WERE in charge at the time and were allowed to define the party and it's goals.
That's what happens when rhetoric overcomes sense. - inhaler, on 03/25/2009, -0/+8Oh Denny...
We Clevelanders love that adorable little elf :) - MelvinSchlubman, on 03/25/2009, -3/+10Bingo on the black-and-white vs shades-of-gray difference. For distinguishing liberals from conservatives in the field, here are other markers to check for:

For sports, I've searched for the liberal equivalent of the conservatives' NASCAR. Suggestions? - creepermclurker, on 03/25/2009, -1/+8Are you saying you want to have sex with the President?
- novenator, on 03/25/2009, -2/+9Not true. Blind partisan Obama bashing has become much more prevalent than Obama 'praise' on Digg lately. I honestly respect the man, only the 2nd time I've ever been able to say that about a major politician in my life. That said, I don't think anyone on the left puts him up on a pedestal and we say so openly. For instance, the plan to leave 50k troops in Iraq after the withdrawal is not cool, accepting anything less than universal health care coverage is unacceptable, etc.
- Heel04, on 03/25/2009, -10/+17This is the most ridiculous, self-serving, own-ego-stroking article Ive ever read.
- jameskong15, on 03/25/2009, -5/+12I'm pretty liberal in general, but this guy obviously has no trouble patting himself and his fellow democrats on the back at every opportunity. There has been very little if any actual effort put forward by the left to criticize Obama into changing his decisions or otherwise altering course. Writing a few weakly worded opinion articles isn't ***** when your end result is to just let it go and bend over. If they really felt passionately about the issues they were "criticizing" him on they'd be doing more than typing out softball articles on why Obama is misdirected rather than just calling him out as incompetent or foolish as was common with Bush. I'd like to see the left actually get tough on Obama, like they seem to have no problem doing with republicans, but obviously they think they're doing a great job already, what a joke.
- novenator, on 03/25/2009, -2/+9I think that means keep his digg ratio at +/- 0
- homercles337, on 03/25/2009, -1/+8Spot on with the black/white simplified perspective of conservatives. Truly the party of the simpleton.
- ZenMojo, on 03/25/2009, -2/+8You realize moderates are just as likely to be 100% wrong as liberals and conservatives.
If liberals are right on all of the issues, absolute moderates are wrong on half. If conservatives are right on all of the issues, absolute moderates are still wrong on half.
On the other hand, if liberals and conservatives are both right on half of the issues, moderates can be either absolutely right or absolutely wrong. Hell, individual moderates can be in absolute disagreement with each other.
Think about it. - enantiodromia, on 03/25/2009, -1/+7had facts gotten in the way, you would have seen through the clearly bogus WMD claims, which has cost this country dearly.
- kooredaan, on 03/25/2009, -0/+5"We GET it...you WON. Let's get together and fix the damn country already."
I'm all for that, but at every corner the Republicans in power don't realize this. They still haven't accepted an overwhelming defeat. They seem extremely bitter and basically have focused in making Obama's tenure a living hell, while solely focusing on what to do in 2010 and 2012.
Tell your representatives who won and that they need to work with Obama/Democrats to fix the country... Not bitch and moan publicly while offering no real alternatives. - inactive, on 03/25/2009, -5/+10Why do you hate America? Only idiots that want PRESIDENT Obama (in office 64 days) to fail!
