- Mujokan, on 07/10/2009, -7/+28Peggy Noonan gives it both barrels. Great read.
Bear in mind she is not talking to Palin, she is talking to her party. I think Palin has given up on office. I find what Levi Johnston is reporting perfectly credible. She wants less stress and more money. Those who think she will run for President are probably kidding themselves. Noonan is telling the Republicans to grow up -- that is correct whether or not Palin actually tries to get elected for something again.
Even as a Democrat I would prefer a competent GOP with a 50% chance of winning power to an incompetent one with a 20% chance. Noonan is right that there is too much at stake. The Republican party needs to look at themselves and the current situation and admit that Bush was a disaster. Palin or any other Bush-a-like could be fatal. - TrixieBelden, on 07/10/2009, -7/+24I am not a Republican, but I found this to be an excellent article. I can agree with the author that we need competent, intelligent leaders in the years ahead of us. As Peggy Noonan concluded, "We are going to need the best." To me, that means the best of Independents, Democrats, Republicans, and all others.

You do realize that the submitted article was written by Peggy Noonan, don't you? In case you don't know who she is, she was once a speechwriter for Ronald Reagan, and she is not exactly what you might call a "lib". - logicbus, on 07/11/2009, -1/+15 "She wasn't thoughtful enough to know she wasn't thoughtful enough."
- atk124, on 07/11/2009, -1/+13"She never learned how the other sides think, or why."
She will never get the nomination for president at this point because she is an unthinking candidate. She is merely a representative of one side of all issues, without understanding why.
Romney is thoughtful. Obama is thoughtful. In addition to their charisma, their ability to understand issues is the reason why they will be running against each other in 2012. (Jindal will be Romney's running mate) - pathouston22, on 07/11/2009, -5/+15Sarah Palin will be in Texas campaigning for the governor, Rick Perry. I welcome her with open arms...I ***** hate Rick Perry.
- Mujokan, on 07/10/2009, -1/+10"There is no there there" was originally Gertrude Stein on Los Angeles.
- subscriber, on 07/11/2009, -0/+8"I don't get why the left doesn't understand..."
This article was written by Peggy Noonan, a Republican -- not someone from "the left." Although Ms. Noonan didn't say Ms. Palin is stupid, she came close: "She was limited in her ability to explain and defend her positions, and sometimes in knowing them ... She wasn't thoughtful enough to know she wasn't thoughtful enough."
An intelligent person might hold the conservative views expressed by Sarah Palin, but that does not mean that Sarah Palin is smart. - bringitontimx, on 07/11/2009, -0/+8Great. Exorcisms. Yay.
- videographer, on 07/11/2009, -0/+8Wow, sense from the WSJ. Who woulda thunk it.
- 47f0, on 07/11/2009, -1/+8Ferretman - about a third of the Republicans I know would love to see a Palin/Jindal ticket in 2012
But 100% of my liberal friends want to see a Palin/Jindal ticket.
Hmmmm... - malex, on 07/11/2009, -0/+6You're assuming that Ferretman clicked on the link, much less read the article.
Just as Noonan describes Palin, her followers are not thoughtful enough to know they aren't thoughtful enough. - bicyclethief, on 07/11/2009, -1/+6I have no quarrel with the content of the article. I think most sane people have realized Palin is just out of her league when it comes to national politics.
But I have a problem with loyal conservative/Republican pundits like Noonan who don't really say what they really think until it doesn't matter anymore. She does her party and country a disservice by going along with candidates like Palin, soft supporting them in public, but all the while, condemning her in hushed tones. - inactive, on 07/11/2009, -0/+5You betcha! ...
- dijkstra22, on 07/11/2009, -1/+5A few things:
1. You can be an abortion hater but still be pro choice.
2. Being God-loving is narrow minded. - radix2, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4Romney and Jindal appear to be the only ones left without taint. But that is relative. Jindal claims he performed an exorcism (i.e. nut-case) and Romney has the Mormon stigma (not that it should matter, but don't forget the base here).
I really feel the Republican party as it stands now is dead. A lame duck. Contrary to what the media claims, the US is not a center-right country. It is just center and the GOP needs to realise this and reform around that reality. - PuddMaster, on 07/11/2009, -1/+5why sarah palin is no longer a stateswoman? it's real simple actually...BECAUSE SHE IS A ***** RETARD!....and thank christ most of the country realized that she is a ***** retard and could potentially be president and voted for obama instead. furthermore, it is my opinion that palin realized her cuteness and folksiness got her as far as it can possibly go. she was governor of alaska and was a vp candidate eventhough she was clearly in way over her head. the jig was finally up. i give her props for getting so far. she will probably make a ***** ton of loot in book deals and appearances.
- QQMore, on 07/11/2009, -3/+7No, but I did have both hands free since I was ramming your mom from behind.
- TroyPDX, on 07/11/2009, -1/+5I read it as a farewell to Hamm's. Thank god it wasn't. That's some good beer, I mean for the price and all.
- QQMore, on 07/11/2009, -2/+5You must worship Tina Fey then. She did more than anyone to put that dolt "out there". I can understand the sentiment though, Tina is awesome.
- thejackyl, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3Very well written article. I think his predictions of hard times ahead will prove to be fairly accurate and his analysis of Palin is the most complete and accurate that I've seen.
- floppytoes, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3For those who don't know, Peggy Noonan represents the fiscally-responsible/less government/sane wing of the Republican party. A former speechwriter for Reagan who didn't even endorse McCain in 2008 (presumably due to Palin). If you don't believe these types exist, consider checking out more of her articles.
- HarryNorman, on 07/12/2009, -1/+4Palin is a good example of the failings of the Republican Party. They have dumbed it down so much, only high school dropouts will be Republicans one of these days. Unfortunately, there are a lot of high school dropouts.
- Astrad, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3All her points about Palin's lack of depth and pride in her ignorance and lack of curiosity could equally be applied to Bush who Peggy Noonan was generally very supportive of.
- ankhen, on 07/11/2009, -1/+4Yes, you're absolutely right. She does scare us liberals to death.
And that's because we fear that all though there is almost no chance, someone dumber the dubs could be one of the most powerful people in the world.
And if that doesn't scare you, then you really need pull your head out of the sand and read up on who Sarah Palin is (and not watch Fox News). - inactive, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3Yes PLEASE!!!!! Palin 2012!!!!!
-Liberal - pathouston22, on 07/11/2009, -1/+4About 1/7th of the way there at age 23.
- thejackyl, on 07/11/2009, -2/+5Bush wasn't a disaster. He got some nice new prison camps installed, for one.
- crunchdigg, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3but why does she hate america?
- pantylines, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2Dear Sir/Madam:
I would digg you up twice (or more) if I could. Hamm's is a fine, cheap beer. - malex, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2Aside from your being confused between "do not read" and "cannot read", everything there was perfectly true about Palin.
- pingveno, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2FTA
"Her lack of any appropriate modesty did her in. Actually, it's arguable that membership in the self-esteem generation harmed her. For 30 years the self-esteem movement told the young they're perfect in every way. It's yielding something new in history: an entire generation with no proper sense of inadequacy."
I've heard this before and I've got to take issue with it. Since when has this self-esteem movement told people that they're perfect? In my K-12 years I never heard that said to me or anyone else. Teachers were trying to give positive reinforcement, but I didn't see much vanity coming out of it. - PopcornDave, on 07/11/2009, -2/+4What seems to scare them to death, as it does the republicans, is to not have a boogeyman to point to in an effort to garner votes.
And she wouldn't make a great president simply because her whole term would be spent warding off media attacks which really serves only the media selling ad time in the end since they seem more intent on inventing news out of thin air than actually digging for stories anymore. - inactive, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2Thank the GOP.
- consonance, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2I've never really thought about Palin in such terms, but now that I've had it explained to me the concept seems like it should have been obvious to me all along.
- dagamer34, on 07/11/2009, -1/+3Before we skip to 2012, let's focus on 2009 first?
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -1/+2I've never been passionate about any political figure, and that's including George Bush, but if by some long shot Palin runs for President or Vice President and wins, I'm leaving this country.
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1***** that, I'm running for office. If she can make it, I'm a sure win for President.
- Siskoraban, on 07/11/2009, -1/+2Everyone in this thread is getting trolled so hard it hurts.
- Breyker4711, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1No but clearly you are uninformed, Peggy Noonan is not a member of the left. She is Reagan's former speech writer.
What Peggy Noonan is, is something conservatives currently have in VERY short supply. An intelligent proponent.
What is really funny here, is that you mistook intelligence for liberalism. - malex, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Poe's Law is in effect.
- Breyker4711, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Ann Coulter is a rambling ***** guilty of voter fraud... who gives a ***** what she thinks?
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1I breathed a sigh of relief too.
- BearKill, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1Palin is hot, and a nice lady who was unfortunately not qualified to be on the ticket. The media treatment has been cruel. Noonan is two-faced and I am getting tired of her sanctimonious opinion columns. Also the title was totally corny.
- RogueGenius, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1You are assuming the people you are disagreeing with are WORTHY of respect. Respect is earned. You can't post stupid crap in the form of ill informed - often demonstrably false - opinion and then act like you deserve respect.
- PuddMaster, on 07/11/2009, -1/+2how do you know that? i'm only 25. i could end up being very successful
how does it make you feel that you voted for someone who is widely regarded as a ***** retard? you probably voted for bush twice as well, right? at least i know i'm already more successful than you
btw, i'm sorry if i hurt your palin loving feelings..but she is an enormous retard - NeptuneZen, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1Oh yeah prove it? She had the same person accuse her of voter fraud for like 5 years now and I don't see a conviction. And how about you refute what she says not who she is?
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1Did anyone else think "Caddyshack" when they read Peggy Noonan? Probably just me.
- EvansHall, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1I have an idea! Let's just all stop talking about Sarah Palin, listening to Sarah Palin, and listening to people talk about Sarah Palin.
