- remove, on 10/12/2007, -14/+88Yeah, Gibson is the guy who has made millions selling his fraudulent books about the supposed "War on Christmas."
Honestly, how is Gibson not getting sued for libel right now by CNN (whom he has now accused of journalistic fraud), not to mention Senator Obama's campaign? - smoothmedia, on 10/12/2007, -16/+85You know what...I can understand Fox jumping the gun and reporting the Obama smear as soon as they heard of it. I expect that of them. Very few of their reports, especially those relating in any way to politics, are anything other than opinion, hearsay and BS. What I cannot understand is how these "anchors" can STILL believe the BS they were fed days after it has been completely debunked. Does John Gibson not monitor what other media outlets are saying about him and his reports? Did no one bring it to Gibsons attention that the report was bogus? This audio clip appears to be evidence of John Gibson deliberately misinforming the public. Which is far worse than simply putting a spin on a story. Gibson is supposed to be opinionated on his show, so I don't really have a problem with him putting a right wing spin on things, but a bold face lie like this is simply intolerable.
When I heard about this anti-muslim fueled smear against Obama, I had to think to myself.... Could a mainstream news organization get away with reporting something like that in Canada? Not a chance. If Peter Mansbridge (CBC anchor) decided to report that a canadian politician had gone to a madrassa as a child and attempted to connect him/her with muslim extremism, he would be fired before you could say "Tuktoyaktuk". - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -15/+72I just realized Fox's appeal. Their "news" has no more integrity to it than two women gossiping over a fence, and that's exactly the crowd to which Fox News appeals.
- orientis, on 10/12/2007, -14/+69smoothmedia you're still thinking in terms of journalism. It has been said before in exaggerated jest, yet remains very true: Fox News is not a journalistic concern. Its sole function is as a republican mouthpiece. That is it.
Now, if a JOURNALIST had made these unfounded claims and then had them debunked, he would very quietly, yet publicly, say "Oops" and that would be the end of it. Propaganda works in a different way. Credibility is not an issue.
Credibility is not an issue.
Credibility is not an issue.
And what I say three times is true. - Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -7/+49This is unbelievable. Journalistic standards have declined rapidly since about 1990, but this kind of thing has to stop. If you have something to report, go out and verify it first. Take some pictures. Interview the teachers, ex-students. But just smearing a politician without any proof is an abuse of the First Amendment. Other, honest reporters, should call any report that is like this, no matter the network, for what it is: a piece of trash.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+43I'd have titled this story "John Gibson is a Total Douche"
- appleann1, on 10/12/2007, -11/+44He's not a news anchor.
- rabidjester, on 10/12/2007, -16/+47Wait, why is a news channel anchored by a right wing radio host? Isn't this the war on christmas guy also?
- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -6/+36@ thecobbs
"Their news is actually pretty good"
huh? are you ***** crazy? - Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34@mrfoos: Obviously you don't listen to NPR. If you did, you wouldn't sound like a three-year-old claiming the moon is made of cheese.
As for Fox being balanced, they go get conservative blowhard "A" and pit him or her against "so-called liberal guy you've never heard of B." It's a lot like the "balance" on "Hannity and Colmes." Which is to say, about as much as a crooked poker deck. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30Actually, a disturbing portion of Republicans use Fox News as their primary source of news. Not only do they think it's accurate, they're going to take Fox's word over every one else's.
- ZernanToledo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29@mrfoos
Having on a token democrat to poke fun at does not make a news channel fair and balanced. In saying that, you're also deluded if you think that CNN etc are "liberal" and in any way left wing. From the outside (i.e the rest of the world) it's hard to see a huge difference between Fox and CNN, sure Fox is blatantly pro-republican, but CNN, although it disagrees on some issues, portrays the exact same worldview from a slightly alternate perspective. They in no way represent the full spectrum of political opinion. In the same way, the differences between Republican and Democrat are superficial, both ultimately are in debt to their corporate sponsors (who often fund both parties), who want to see a return for their investments once thier pet politicians are elected.
What I'm saying is Fox/Republican and CNN/Democrat are like good cop and bad cop. They're both still cops that report to the same table-thumping "Chief", whether they know it or not.
And here in the UK, although its range of political thought represented in the media is much wider than the US, it's not exactly comprehensive. And it's getting worse.
And by the way, I'm not some bed wetting "liberal", in fact I run a business and hold a number of classically right wing views regarding immigration, capitalism, crime and punishment etc. However I am deeply concerned with the environment, the military industrial complex, the state of democracy and corporate oligarchy, alongside a healthy fear of Muslim extremism and an overly dominant China. But my worldview, which is shared by many of my Friends, is not represented in the mainstream media on any level.
Anyway I've went off on a tangent. - diggtomanjeri, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32Check this out, Obama sent a response just ripping Fox and per the article, naming the Fox anchors that parroted this smear: http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/horsesmouth/2007/01/post_15.php
"These malicious, irresponsible charges are precisely the kind of politics the American people have grown tired of, and that Senator Obama is trying to change by focusing on bringing people together to solve our common problems" - UglieJosh, on 10/12/2007, -7/+27He doesn't need to worry. The Fox News viewers have an 85% approval rating of Bush (according to their SotU polls). This means it is a very small chunk of people that watch it and, the ones that do, were probably going to vote against Obama for being black anyways.
If I'm right, and I hope I am, this could really help Obama's campaign more than anything he could do on his own. If he is enemy #1 of Fox News, he will easily become candidate #1 for people who hate rednecks, the incredibly wealthy and the moral majority....
That gives him the Digg vote for starters. - infopro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20I once heard it said by an old-line newspaper publisher that I used to work for, "If the mud is real, sling it; the people have a right to know. IF the mud is real...." Lines I live by still. News must be correct; if it isn't, it's either libel, or slander, or commentary. But whatever it is, it's not news.
- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17"What did you think of the Bush National Guard papers story as reported by Dan Rather?"
i recall a few people losing their jobs in that circumstance. if Fox News did the same i might show some respect for their sorry asses - DJShay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16The best thing to do is ignore them. Then they will soon be irrelevant. That's their worst nightmare.
- 1310nm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I actually watched the Fox & Friends show where they tried to start the Swift Boating of Obama. I threw up a little in my mouth. Those 3 are the most *****-headed trio just short of Ron Burgundy and his quad. "Why, if this is true, I am so scared! How can we have a Muslim be president in these times? He'll be sympathetic to the terrorists!"
It's hard to pick out any one of them that is the most stupid/dangerous, because all 3 of them are big, televised extensions of right-wing talk radio, packed into an easy-to-swallow, corny morning show. - m3mn0n, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18You're an idiot.
- SickMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Gibson should be fired or forced to resign. Dan Rather was forced to do so when he reported on the false documents about Bush's enlistment record in the National Guard. The only difference between Gibson and Rather is that Gibson knowingly lied, when Rather did not.
Anyone defending Gibson is living under a double standard. - Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Citations have a known liberal bias. Just ask Ant.
- RekCognize, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17"liberal bed-wetters"??
- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14that is an insult to the WWE
- an0nymous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13The Dan Rather story was a shame and a disgrace, but there were consequences for Rather and the others involved. Will Fox even acknowledge this? Nope.
The situations are not analogous. - cmiz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12This just in, John Gibson may have contracted HIV from a male prostitute in late 2001. This information came from the same anonymous source as the story about Obama. Stay tuned for more details...
- samk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15appleann1 is correct.
Gibson doesn't host a news program. It's an editorial show, like O'Reilly, Matthews, Olbermann, Hannity, etc. - Koray, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Cleotis, you are the embodyment of every redneck republican cliche and stereotype know to man. Looking through your comments, the first page is almost entirely news about either Obama or Bush. In one of the very few that wasn't about the two, you called a group of kids coming together against global warming "gay".
You called Obama an "Islamist" and a terrorist several times. You insult the democratic party any chance you get, often with utter garbage ("Demtards have been in power two weeks, you would think they would have solved the world's problems by now"). You use some terribly unfunny word for liberal in almost every post (libtard, demtard, *****?).
Almost every comment you make has been dugg down at least 10 times, several reaching 30 40, and more. And the ones that haven't are either one liners "Gay" (used more than once) or comments in stories that have been barely dugg, in which you are either the only commenter or one of very few. It's as if you actually search digg looking for posts to troll.
I'm going to quote you: "They believe the best way to do this is to beat the anti-Bush drum until it drowns out everything else.". This line, to put it in context, is in regards to liberals wanting to "gain power". So liberal's beating the anti-Bush drum is a bad thing, but you being one of the most dedicated (Hey, I'll give you that) trolls in the history of Digg, posting anti democrat garbage at every chance, is different?
I've honestly decided you are actually a liberal who posts this ***** just to remind us how stupid the other side can be. - meanreal, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Fox = crap
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12And make martyrs out of these lying *****? No way. The best thing to do would be to get each one mad at the other and let them eliminate themselves.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"And it's why FoxNews has the best news ratings on TV!"
Again with this worthless defense. I could care less about their ratings. If more people voted for the American Idol than the POTUS, would that make the American Idol the more important of the two? No, it just means that millions of people like to be fed information that validates their prejudices. Occurs on both sides. If you want to attack journalistic integrity, you have my blessing, but don't try to use the Nielson's to get it done. - Rodalli, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Why would he attack a 2-bit magazine for printing such tabloid bullcrap? We expect this kind of stuff from them. Fox, on the other hand, is a major news outlet and we would and should expect them to act more responsibly and check their facts before televising something like this to millions of viewers.
Just further proof that Fox is no better than the B-grade media outlets they "borrow" their stories from. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13@appleann1
Yes, but he has a show on a 24 hour news network. - g0nz0HST, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11It just goes to show how scared the far right is of Obama. He hasn't even officially announced that he's going to run, and they've already started their smear campaign.
- an0nymous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You seem a little scared of Obama.
- catbeller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Lemme share a story about Gibson that no one else in the world remembers.
It was 1998, more or less. I was an IT consultant, working from home 3 days out of 5, so I always had the cable news running as I worked. This was in the heat of the jihad against Clinton, with the charges of murder and black baby fathering and something about Whitewater, every minute of every blessed day, 24 hours of hammering, hammering, hammering...
At 2 minutes before 3 Eastern time, I rememer clearly, Gibson was on MS-NBC hosting his midday show. His producer let him take a quick call to fill in the time before the news at 3. A 12-year old young man took the air, and said:
"I think that you should be ashamed of yourself, using the time on a news show to report on [more or less he said] nonsense, when you should be reporting real news--"
Gibson cut him off in mid-sentence. "Kid," he said with an air of wise amusement, "We wouldn't report on this stuff if you didn't listen to it. Are you listening?"
Kid: "Yeah... but..."
"We are on the air to make money. We talk about what you want to hear, so we make money. If you didn't want to listen, we wouldn't talk about it. Bye."
Kid sputters. Cut off.
That is John Gibson. I would say he labeled himself a whore, not a journalist. He's a pornographer for right-wing listeners, making up stuff they want to hear. This isn't news, it's agitprop. He had no apologies.
CNN, for all it's trying to out-whore Fox for the right lately, still has journalists left on staff.
- bigturns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8To my brothers on the right, do you really want to be associated with a greedy, fundamentalist, pathological liar like Gibson?
This isn't the America I was raised in - where is the debate, where is the discourse? What is with this new flavor of McCarthyism? Why is it when voices of dissent are raised, labels of anti American and or un-patriotic are bandied about?
Liberalism is not your foe. Muslim's aren't out to destroy your way of life. You've been lied to. Your, once proud, party has been subverted for the gain of big business.
Men like Gibson stand only to gain (ratings, book sales, name recognition) by making false accusations such as his recent comments suggesting Barack Obama once attended a radical Islamic school. We, the citizens of these United States, have everything to lose when we allow for such fallacious and divisive comments.
Freedom of speech right - sure, this makes sense, the man has a show, his producers like what he's doing as ratings have never been better. Given this, Gibson, in rapid-fire succession, spews whatever smear he feels will engender his base. Here is where you come in.
Vote with clicks, vote with your feet and vote with your wallet. Though our next election isn't for another 2 years, we the people have an opportunity to vote not just every day but all day every day. Whatever party you follow vote regularly and with good conscious. Don't follow the party line of the day. This ***** about liberals being less patriotic than conservatives and or Christians being, somehow, more American than Muslims will only serve to better the position of men like Gibson, who, once more, care not about your welfare but only the size of their bank accounts.
I am at a loss. I don't understand how and why debate/discourse has deteriorated here in this once great nation. What I do understand, what I see clearly, is how men like Gibson need to be shown the door. The more we vote in this way, by not tuning in, the more their producers and eventually the owners of these massive media outlets will get the message. It's simple economics.
Do your part - As a good Republican vote for good Republicans, as a good Democrat vote for good Democrats. Put an end to the days of nut jobs like Gibson who made millions, from book sales, professing to the world of a Liberal cabal against Christmas. - Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9So you're saying it's ok to put out unsourced and later proven untrue rumors as news and then complain when someone calls you on it? They're a bunch of clowns who know what they're saying is full of it and then act indignant when people point out the obvious.
- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7rabble rabble!!! i hear Obama eats Tacos and sushi..I wonder if thats means he sympathizes with asians and mexykans coming here to steal our jobs! that damn Terra-rist loving hippie
- kremvax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@killinger666
While I can appreciate your attempt to change the subject by crying "bias", There's a big difference between "right wing says 'bias'" and "outrageous made up lies sold as a shocking, breaking news story on national tv."
Especially to Fox news viewers, an audience that is sort of , well, intellectually defenseless, and unlikely to question it's sole source of information.
We're talking about a network blatantly lying to a group of people dim enough never to realize that they're watching the American version of Pravda. They're not exactly going to figure out the truth on their own... - phantom317, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I foresee a day when the Daily Show will just play fox news clips every 10 seconds, and then let everyone laugh. (which i guess they sorta do now) Fox news is so horrible that I crack up whenever i see it.
Faux News! - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7They did this same ***** during Katrina, they would start a report with "we don't have any way to verify it but..." then they'd give you some sensationalist ***** story that was reported as false by another outlet a day later.
- betterth, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13I sincerely hope this election isn't lost by FUD, misinformation and lies. It would a damn shame if FOX did that. Another reason to hate Myspace and it's owners, I suppose.
- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10in a few years, Fox will have an hour long primetime show called "The Ass Factor" and it will just be a naked mans hairy ass farting into a microphone, with subtitles translating the news.
i just stole that from idiocracy. but its not far from true - KarthVader, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9It's people like this Gibson lunatic that hold the progress of society back. If he truly believes what he advocates, fun label him an idiot and move on. If he is smearing the name of a potential presidential candidate to make money, shame on him. Shame on him and the organization he represents. Whether he is attacking Obama because of his non-Christian/Anglo name, his apparent "Muslim" education or that he isn't white, he should have at least be courteous to him. But, that's Fox News for you: Never underestimate the desperate.
- an0nymous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Really, Ant?
Citation? - Phatt138, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Ya know, the people that I worry about most are the Fox-watching Conservatives themselves. Do the bigwigs not realize that in training their viewers to accept even the most of-the-wall, slanderous, unfounded half-truths, they're ushering in a future in which the Right is made up of weak-minded lunatics, racists, and voters who think that politics is some 'game' that must be 'won' regardless of the cost?
The 'perfect' Fox News viewers are, eventually, going to be horrible, small-minded people. - Kryptik1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You know what the saddest part about this is?
No matter how thoroughly debunked this is, no matter how much it's condemned, no matter how false it's proven to be on its face...the message is out there. It's going to propogate by word of mouth by those who instantly believe it and decide not to trust anything that disturbs their decided upon world view, it's going to be propogated by Insight, who throws up BS claims of CNN's lack of investigative integrity and stupid questions of 'Why didn't Obama just change his name then if he's not Muslim?!', it's going to be propogated by Fox, who will continue to throw mealy mouthed crap trying to undermine real investigation and reporting by hearasy, hyperbole, and straight out bullcrap.
Obama's fighting back, and that's good, because that's one reason Kerry succumbed so hard to the Swiftboating he received. But the sad fact of the matter is that Obama's already stained. Because Swiftboating works. And that's a crime against politics and the public as a whole in and of itself, because it's wrong, it poisons debate, and it tries to ruin careers and good names through nothing but hearsay, hyperbole, and bullheaded insistence. - sirloin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6had this been dan rather and had he claimed something like bush hadnt gone to flight school like he was supposed to, he would have been fired...
OH wait...
and this is differnt how?
can we call it foxgate now??? - Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Well they were getting a twofer on this one. The madrass rumor was put out as research that Clinton was conductiing. They were also smearing her for being cutthroat by putting this out.
- cprincipe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You see, Gibson made his statement with a question mark at the end, so it's OK.
